Is Clemson Tech’s biggest rival?

In some places, the question of rivals is not debatable. In the SEC, Auburn is Alabama’s biggest, and vice versa. In the Big 10, Michigan and Ohio State loathe one another like no others. In ACC basketball, Duke and North Carolina are unmatched in their intertwined histories.

So when it comes to Georgia Tech and the ACC, is Clemson the Yellow Jackets’ chief conference foe?

Most fans would say yes in part for the fact that the Tigers are the closest team in the conference, not to mention some tense shared history in recent years.

As Tech (5-2, 3-1 ACC) went through final preparations Thursday to play Saturday at Clemson (3-3, 1-2), that may not be a unanimous viewpoint.

Senior cornerback Dominique Reese of Auburn, what say you?

“It’s like any other game,” Reese said. “I hate all the teams the same, with the same amount of passion. I guess you’d say Clemson because it’s so close and fans are going to travel to that game more. I guess they are our biggest rival.”

Debate among yourselves.

I loathe the thugs at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University the most of all ACC teams. Followed by the “can’t spell thugs without Da U” losers of UM.

it is certainly our most important rival-same conference, smallish school that has real degrees, so we interact more on a day-to-day basis;still, more civilized, less loutish-we hate uga more because they are part of the reason this whole country is sliding into decadent oblivion, not their grads, but their boorish masses absorbed in the gladatorial aspect of what “$port$ has become-CU is a place we could have gone if we had been unfortunate enough to be from sc instead of GA, uga fans are the folks we were glad to have escaped from getting out of high school……….

Who? I think about Clemson exactly 3 times a year – once for football and twice for basketball. I know maybe one Clemson fan in Atlanta.

I feel like VT is much more of a rival than Clemson is. The winner of the Tech-VT matchup has won the Coastal every year since VT joined the conference.

Definitely the biggest rival in my mind. I loathe the rednecks from the agricultural school in Clempsun. (Full Disclosure: My emotions my lie in my recollection of Woody Dantzler running up the middle 500 times to beat us in 2002. And me having to walk out of Bobby Dodd listening to Clemson fans learn how to spell their name. Stupid Cheer.)

UGA

We’ve got a long history with Clemson, who’ve never forgiven us for stealing Coach John Heisman from them, or for Bobby Dodd forcing Frank Howard to bring them to Grant Field to play for something like 20 years straight. Can anyone remember the entire stadium singing in unison during the Howard years, “You can take Clemson out the the country, but, you can’t take the country out of Clem-son!”??

UGA = Yawn

Next to UGA – yes, of course Clemson is. Had we continued to play Auburn on a yearly basis, Clemson would have been third. VT and Miami can not be our second biggest rival when we have only played them a handful of times. If the ACC stays as is….it will become UGA (1), Clemson (2) and VT (3). I would even say UVA is a bigger rival then all the others after those 3.

Certainly NOT the biggest rival. Ugag is the biggest, but their fans are worse that VPI&SU’s & Miami’s combined. I don’t even go to the Cesspool anymore; the atmosphere is pure vitriol.

Clemson – GT? This is a GREAT rivalry. Both teams, coaches, and fans seem to respect each other. Yes, they want to beat the you-know-what out of the other team, but you don’t get criminal behavior from the losing fans after a loss. In fact, you get good-natured ribbing, congrats, and a “we’ll get you next time”.

The Clemson and GT fanbases are, in a word, “civil”, – and civilized; traits that don’t exist in the masses of the Ugag or VPI&SU fanbases.

My Nickname for GT – Clemson: “The South’s HEALTHIEST Rivalry” !!!!

they don’t scare me enuf to keep me out of athens, plenty of cops( & remember, according to them, Athens PD is out to get them)-’sides, 3 of my favorite games were ‘85, ‘90 & ‘00, no red shirts ther start of the 4th qtr, already went to drown their sorrows…can’t be a rivalry if you are too big a coward to go to the away game, you are just feeding their distorted self-image-go every chance i can, don’t miss no ‘fraidy-cats…

Has to be Clemson within the conference. VAT has not been on the schedule long enough to earn that moniker. Plus, I think geographical proximity is important in collegiate rivalries. Blacksburg is a long way from Atlanta.

How does anybody list VT, Miami, or FSU as one of our biggest rivals? There is no real history with these teams or fight over recruits. I am not sure I would even call Clemson a rival. The games are always good and we have gone after several of the same recruits, but I never really thought of it as a rivalry game.

Clemson is second on my list. Tech has been fortunate to dominate the series of late as the Tigers are loaded with talent. The big difference is I find myself pulling for Clemson ( especially in their out of conference games ) while I could never root for UGA.

Going back to the 60’s and coming forward – Clemson, Notre Dame, Tennessee, Auburn – all are great rivalries. Now, the Finishing School of East Georgia for Wayward Females in Athens and their ilk do not deserve mentioning.

Within the conference, Clemson is definitely the biggest based on history, proximity, and competitiveness. VPI and UM have quickly become rivals as they are our biggest competition in the Coastal, and I dislike them more than Clemson. FSU could have been a bigger rival if we played them every year.

As far as in conference opponents — Yeah, I’d have to agree that Clemson or VT would be #1. As to the inbreeders up Hwy 316, they used to be a rival but are simply irrelevant anymore. The outcome of that game has absolutely zero effect on anything other than so-called bragging rights. That’s what got GT and Clemson both burned last season. GT vs UGA and Clemson vs SC were both totally irrelevant games to the ACC members, who were more concerned with playing each other the following weekend (a game that actually DID matter!). I agree that is totally inexcusable for either coaching staff to allow the teams to “look ahead” rather than focus on the game at hand, but it is what it is. Our guys went in looking to a game of importance rather than the current irrelevant game, and they got beat. Should have been another “W” for GT, but that’s why they play the games!

Biggest rival within the conference? Yes, due to proximity and history of the series. The games are generally close the fans are respectful to each other. Virginia Tech now holds more importance due to divisional alignment, but Clemson is the bigger rival. I like to see Clemson win any game but Tech.

Woody Dantzler up the middle again?? It’s a recurring nightmare.

As someone else pointed out too, one thing about the GT – Clemson rivalry is that the fans DO have mutual respect for each other and are VERY civil. That alone makes it a rather unusual rivalry. You won’t see drunk fans throwing things at each other (or in the case of UGA, throwing up on each other) or being overly abusive towards each other.

Many years ago the GT – UGA rivalry was somewhat similar, but not anymore. I hate everything about Athens and everyone there. Period. Last GT – UGA game I went to (year before last) I had to get bailed out of jail afterward for beating the crap out of a drunk middle-aged UGA fan who staggered up to us and punched my 15 year-old daughter in the nose because she was wearing a T-shirt that was, shall we say, not very flattering to the trembling chihuahuas, and we were beating them! Needless to say, I made sure that Bubba got a very lengthy stay at Jackson (once he got out of the Hospital) for Felony assault of a minor, among other charges. But that incident put an end to any remotely sympathetic feelings I may have harbored for the sorry white-trash UGA fans. Someone could nuke that cesspool and i wouldn’t lose a second of sleep over it

Blue Fox has it right, there’s loads more history with Clemson but I also think the recent history is not really hate filled. Some great games though like Godsey’s pass to Campbell. Even Gailey’s team pulled out a miracle finish when CU fumbled the punt snap. In the early 80s I remember a raucous crowd during a Dewberry led victory – sitting in the end zone I and others delivered quite the rude welcome as their players came out the tunnel …good ol days

VT blanks sheep, Clempsun is a big one especially when you get use to beating them the last 6 out of 7 times but Miami is as well, up until 09, we have beat them 4 straight, you want to take that authority over them year after year..of course we want to pull the one out at the end in Athens, why do I feel like Roddy Jones is going to run up some serious yards in that game again

you know CLempsun is a big rival, but VT is becoming the most hated of all. The game is two weeks away and their obnoxious fans are already starting in on the ACC ESPN blog. Still running their mouths about the cut blocks which they claim were chop blocks. Funny how CPJ has ran the same type offense and blocking schemes since he started way back in the day and not one opponent before Beamer and VT has ever complained about chop blocks. Funny, when VT won in 08 he never complained then. I never saw Notre Dame players being carried off in ambulances when Navy beat them twice. But Beamer is bitter because the truth is he is not the big kahoona anymore and he knows it and the VT fans can’t take it..VT is by far becoming the most hated of all, VA POLYDENTURE TECH BLANKS SHEEP

Tech’s ACC rivals:

1) Clemson–long series and close, meaningful games,
2) UVA–Both teams have been a thorn in each others’ sides. 41-38 (times 2), anyone? And when it comes to smack, UVA is the Tennessee of the ACC. Big mouths, big hats, short on the cattle.
3) Duke–Played ‘em every year since 1933. Nobody else comes close.

FSU, Miami, VPI–not enough history to be a rivalry yet.

Honorable mention: UNC. Similar to the rivalry with UVA, but not as intense.

In the ACC, I suppose you could say Clemson. It’s always a great game, their fans are pretty good for the most part, and I LOVE their campus and stadium. However, having started school in 2008, I can’t say I have any ill will towards Clemson. I don’t have a reason to. But, based on history, I’d have to say Clemson.

However, fake Tech up in virginia is quickly rising to the top. Ask any Tech fan that is reasonably knowledgeable about the Beamerbawl incident and they’ll give you an earful. The winner of the game always gets to the ACC championship game. Their fans absolutely suck. And hell, I consider VA to be part of the north, so they have that going against them as well. It’s becoming a pretty good rivalry.

But I think we all know who the biggest rival overall is…

I believe that Clemson is our greatest rivalry with a history of any length. They are a similar school in a number of ways. That being said, I’ve enjoyed the bantor between their fans and ours…though, the appreciated civility may give way to hostility if they don’t win one soon! GO TECH!!!
