Johnson isn’t buying excuses…from anyone

Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson doesn’t buy “being on the same page.” He’s also not spending money on “playing faster,” “simpler schemes” or anything else that he’s hearing right now as reasons given by anyone, including his players, as to why his team seems different this season than last, when it won the ACC championship.

He’s aggravated at his team, all right. He said that he’s “up their tail right now, and I’m going to be until they reach their potential. I’m not trying to be their friend, I’m trying to be their coach.”

But some of his aggravation is focused on the Chicken Little perception that the offense isn’t as good as it was last year and the defense is falling apart.

The truth is the team is in almost the same spot as it was last season: 2-1 in the ACC. The biggest difference between this season and last is this year’s schedule is backloaded with Clemson, Miami and Virginia Tech, whereas last season most of the tough conference games were played in late September and early October.

He stopped his Tuesday press conference for a few seconds while someone tried to answer how many yards per carry the team averaged last season, compared to this season.

The answer: 5.2 last season to 5.6 this season.

The average points scored: 29.6 this season to 33.8 last season.

It’s not that bad. Though he’s not happy.

While the defense played better last week against Wake Forest, he said people shouldn’t be patting themselves on the back. There are still lots of issues: notably, a lack of big plays and trouble converting on 3rd downs.

In two blogs later today, we will take a look at these two areas and what is causing them.

But for now, Johnson is trying to bring out the best in the team.

“If we get beat by a team that is more talented and is clearly the better team, but we go out there and try hard and we do the right things, then it doesn’t do any good to yell at them,” Johnson said. “But, I don’t believe that to be the case to this point. I don’t think we are playing up to our potential and it is up to me to make them play up to their potential. Do I want to be the heavy all the time and the bad guy? No. I would love for somebody else to do it, but I don’t see anybody else doing it so therefore it is up to me.”

Here’s a nice read on how two former Tech players are helping Georgia State.

PJ knows better than anyone else what his team`s potential really is. As a fan, I do believe that this team does not have the ability to win more than
eight regular season games at most given that we still have Clemson, VT, Miami and UGA left on the schedule. I will be happy with 7-5 in a year with a new defense and loss of four standout players from last year

Wait a second Rockdale

I will not be satisfied with 7-5. I understand where you are coming from. And I understand losing four great players from last year. However, you just don’t forget how to run the offense. It doesn’t make any sense. It’s time for the Offense to gel and do what it’s suppose to do. We have the talent, not Dwyer talent, but solid. Hill is a good talent, just needs to settle down. Move Allen to A-back!!! Ok I will stop Venting lol. Go Jackets!!

It is so refreshing to hear Coach Johnson talk about our team vis-a-vis Mark Richt. Our coach, coaches. He knows what he needs to do to get our players coached up to their potential. What a refreshing concept. I’m sure that this week we’ll be better. Like has been said, we have a tough road ahead of us, but of the 4 biggies, I’ll bet we win at least 2 of them. Third downs have definitely been a problem. We will get better as the season goes along.

He says the right things, he does the right things. CPJ, whether the team goes 7-5 or 5-7, will be CPJ.

Rockdale Jacket is actually a GA fan folks. “I’ll be happy with 7-5…” Come on dude. Of course he would, GA already has 4 losses.

If he really is a Tech fan then get rid of him with that kind of “Chan Gailey / Dave Braine” thinking.

If GT finishes 7-5 that will SUCK!! I, for one, will not be okay with 7-5. Too much talent, and too much coaching to be losing 5 games. Again, this ain’t Chan Gailey coaching the Jackets anymore! Gotta get the kids’ heads out of their arses and get’em focused; one game at a time. If PJ can do this then they will be fine.

I agree with him. There have been a lot of people on here who say he blames the players (probably UGA impostors). But, he very clearly said that it’s his responsibility to get the players ready to play to win. I really respect him. I think we’ve got good things in line for the rest of the year. I still think we can win the ACC and beat UGA in Athens to knock them out of bowl contention.

How much would you LOVE to tell your UGA friends that Tech has a longer bowl streak the next time they talk about some of the crappy bowls we went to during the Gailey era?

I was so glad to hear Johnson was upset at the play in Wake. Many of the articles talked about us playing better against Wake, but I thought it was the worst offensive game of the season. We were letting undersized Wake Forest get guys in the backfield on almost every play. A Wake Forest defense that is awful held us to our lowest yardage of the season and we were lucky to win. Johnson should be in their backside, because they looked awful. It is the execution that is lacking right now, part of that is talent related, but the overwhelming part is mental. That is why I love the fact that he is all over the players to improve that part of it.

Anthony Allen averaged 9.7 yards per carry at A-back last year and is producing 5.4 yards per carry at B-back this year.

Seems like a no-brainer to move him back to A-back and help GT’s offense.
At least try it and see what happens.

answer: 5.9 yards. You SHOULD average more yardage at A-Back than B-Back

Matt

October 6th, 2010
10:29 am

There are two things I don’t do, the first is question Paul Johnson, the second is blame our woes on missing players (who are we? UGA). Allen is of course not going to get 10 yds a carry at the B-Back position, thats the nature of the position. The dive isnt going to work everytime. Over 5 yards a carry will score 6 every time you touch the football. The problem has been miscues, blocked punts, pitches to no one, inopportune fumbles (WF had 14 pts off t/o). Get rid of these mistakes and we beat Kansas. NC State may have still won, but it sure would have been closer in the end. The defense has serious issues, but the WF game gives hope that they are making improvements.

Let’s finally lay this myth to rest:

PJ did not get rings for the guys for beating UGA.

The players were given the rings as a gift from the Chick-fil-A folks for playing in the Peach Bowl. They could get anything they wanted engraved on them. The seniors voted to put the UGA score on it. It was the only time they had beaten UGA in their careers, so it was a big deal to them.

doesn’t seem like GT can do a whole lot about Allen being a step slower than Dwyer but perhaps switching him at time from B to A back might be interesting. Allen is great with the short passes. Preston Lyons had a good run in the Wake game, hope he keeps that up. But receivers, receiver, receivers you got to catch the ball when Nesbitt throws it in your hands. Nesbitt deserves better than that from all of you. Do like the balance of passing to the array of receivers. No more Bay Bay so no more just going to that one guy. We all know that now.

Our recruiting is better than average. We recruit guys like Vad Lee, who is a run first, pass later type qb. Those guys don’t get five stars. He’s the top qb in NC, and rivals only has him as a three star. We will never be the top recruiter, because we are a tough academic school. If you want to recruit thug five stars from the ghetto, be a UGA fan. Gaily had one good year of recruiting where we had eight four stars. Half of those guys didn’t pan out. Three of them were awesome; Dwyer, Morgan, and Burnett. BTW D Thomas was a three star no name. We need to keep winning, and the recruiting will take care of itself.

CPJ is right about stats this year except one major one that proves we don’t run the ball as well this year as we did the last two. Time of possession is almost favoring the opposition this year.it breaks down 30:31 to 29:29. That is NOT a CPJ team. We are also not running the ball as much on third and long as we did the previous two years. The only good news about that is that means the D is a little better as they are on the field more often and giving up less yards in every stat and less points. So though I will not pretend we have a great defense, it has improved.

Idea -

We haven’t had another quarterback touch the ball for any length of time. Next year will be a mystery. Move Nesbitt to B back (he’s running it all the time now and can’t pass) and Allen to A back. Maybe a new quarterback can hand off and MAYBE complete some passes to make the offense really work like it is supposed to. Think about it.

Systemic

October 6th, 2010
1:19 pm

If we can upgrade the talent on D some and let this O line come of age then Tech will be very dangerous and guys like Alan will have a belly full of crow. Oh and here’s another scary thought: for all his toughness J. Nesbitt won’t be the best QB that Tech produces in this system!

But for now I’m kind of like RockdaleJacket. Last year we won a ton of close games (5 by five points or fewer) with 4 NFL guys on the roster, plus some other experienced o lineman. Losing that kind of talent means taking a step back for even the football factories much less Tech (remember how crazy the Doggies sounded when they were talking about how they would somehow be better w/o Stafford and Moreno).

Bottom line: we are inexperienced on the O line so the offense is struggling some. If in a building phase for the program (which is what this year is) Tech could win 7-8 games and beat Georgia, then every Tech fan should be singing their coach’s praises just as much as when he won the ACC.

GDBurdell - PJ wins Macarthur genius award (from teck fans)

October 6th, 2010
4:01 pm

PJ is doing exactly what he did last year, the trouble is that the team isn’t winning games. This proves that the ‘09 season was a fluke (just like Wake in ‘06). Teck is having to use more passing plays to score, and doing it badly which means that the coaches are moving outside of their comfort zone just to get yards. Basically the whole ACC has tech figured out (and has their respective team prepared) and every single game from here on in will be another example of this. AND since UGA had the techies figured out last year, what do you think will happen this time around?

Back to clarify my comments on the 2nd post early a:m.
The words I left out about my being satisfied with 7-5 or best 8-4
was based on the reality of the remaining schedule. I just don`t expect
us to beat Clemson/VT on the road, nor Miami at home. Thats 5 loses
provided we beat UGA in Athens. Not trying to be negative but I believe
thats the best we should expect notwithstanding CPJ`s efforts to light
a fire and get the team playing better. The schedule is just too tough for
the talent we have.

Coaches should be honest and straight forward. Johnson is doing just that! He believes his team has talent enough to be playing better and he’s going to ride them until they do … that’s what coaches should do!

gd burrell shut up you have no clue seriously!cpj has our program on the rise weve won 20 games the last 2 years when have we done that, in cpj system we dont need 5 star recruits we need execution and we can beat anybody bc i have yet seen a team that just whipped us on their own with out us shooting ourself in the foot like usual!!

Coach Johnson recruited most of these players. Coach Johnson prepared these players. Make no mistake about it, when the team fails, its on him. He is a shamelessly arrogant man, who is 0-2 in bowl games for Tech.

The only thing that UGA figured out last year on how to stop GT was to hurt Nesbitt’s ankle. The other thing UGA did well in that game was recovering their fumbles (unlike many games this year and last). It is easy to say that you have figured out our offense when there is not good offensive line play (not an excuse, simply a fact). Heck everyone must have figured out UGAs offense in the SEC because it sure is not working. That logic does not hold-up. You must execute and not make mistakes. UGA is losing like the Jackets because of poor execution and mistakes.

Georgia Tech looked pretty good in the 4th quarter,
out-scoring Wake Forest 18-3 and Nesbitt throwing for two touchdowns.

Gotta love coach and the way he just calls it. I have tremendous faith in CPJ and his staff. All good teams have some players, I said players, not just one player who steps up and are leaders, that make all the other guys accountable to each other and themselves to be ready and “up” for the game. This team is woefully short in this area, and you should not need a great Rockne pep talk to be inspired to play. If you can’t get excited and motivated to play 12 or 13 weeks a year, then the problem is within you. Maybe you should find something else to do. I do not mean to throw all the players under the bus, but CPJ has a good staff and his record shows me nothing but success. Maybe it is time to pull some shirts and let the kids play if the upper classmen keep coming out flat. I know these guys carry a load, but so did last years team and the team before that, and they played with a fire in their belly most of the time. It is time for the players to take some responsibility. They are all in this together, or should be.

As a Tech fan, I LOVE that we have a coach that says it like it is! He has bigger things to worry about than the PC nazis out there…he’s committed to winning…it’s obvious…it’s his job…he’s proven to be REALLY good at his job. I’m ALSO enjoying all the pup fans that are hiding behind other peoples tags! Guess they don’t have much to say…and I’m LOVING that as well!!! GO TECH!!!

Football is about a team that comes together……….. Football is about a team that plays every game like it’s their last…… Football is about a teams Heart, that beats as one….. We are NOWHERE near any of these….. We may not have the best 5 star players, but you really don’t have to, if you have a coach that will coach up and motivate…… From the verbage that I read in the paper, maybe CPJ has finally come out of his shell…. Time will tell..

The B back is out of place Coach. Put a bruiser at B back and put Allen back at the A position… Come on that’s obvious. Allen is not an inside runner.

The D took the week off against Kansas but other than that game they have played as well or better than last year but the offense doesn’t appear to be near as effective.

I’ll believe any old BS even if it makes absolutely no sense at all. Just make sure you say in front of some nice yellow and blue signage, and imply that an obvious failing is part of a ’strategy’ that only techies are ’smart’ enough to understand.

Haha UGA is expanding their engineering program, what a nasty year for tecksters this is!

I am tired of excuses too. I want to see this team put together a game where they do not look like the sandlot jackets. Do they run these plays in practice or just in the game? Also do they think they get the five mississsippi rule before the D’line and LBs rush the QB or run blitz?

Move Allen to a back. Incorporate some shotgun. Nesbitt has no time to throw. We can’t pass block so the shotgun may give him some extra time to set his feet. Bring tenuta back so we can at least blitz and make some plays.

Allen is fine at B-Back… IF we would give him more carries and Nesbitt would quit making bad reads he wouldnt be looking so bad. Also not to take all of the blame off of him he REALLY needs to run with his head up so he can see cutback lanes and blockers in front of him. He runs into the back of his own men way too often when he should be 10+ yards down the field. With saying that… I like that counter option play when we used to put Dwyer in at A-back sometimes and pitch it to him. Why dont we do that with Allen? It’s time to open up the playbook some and try something new. What we are doing now obviously isnt working too well. Come on CPJ get your head together and get this team playing some Tech Football ASAP or we are finished. GO JACKETS!!!!! THWG

what talent?..you have only josh and allen and hill.7-5 is a reach. pj is saying the right things now but when he keeps bringing the div 1aa talent he will have to come up with better stuff. he knows his team is in trouble thats why he is pissed because there is nothing he or his high school offense can do it about it. your team has won 20 games thanks to gailys pro players and the weak acc. when they are all gone look for more losses from tech and pj

Chan Gailey was never a good recruiter. At best he would have taken Josh, Demaryius, and Jonathon Dwyer to 8-4 seasons. He would have never made it to the ACC Championship or Orange bowl. That’s a fact son.
