Tarrant ready to return a few punts

One area that Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson isn’t worried about is his punt-return unit.

Though a 3.4-yards-per-return average ranks it among the worst in the NCAA, Johnson said all it takes is one long return to skew those numbers.

Returns were something that Tech did very well last year. Jerrard Tarrant returned two punts for touchdowns in the season’s first two games before teams started to kick away from him.

This season, he’s either getting hit before he can catch the ball or being forced to try to create something from nothing because the punts are good or his blocking isn’t. His longest return is 10 yards.

Of course,  Johnson said he would like to see Tarrant get more chances to return kicks because it means the defense is forcing teams to punt.

This season teams have punted 16 times, with seven returns. Teams punted 19 times through the first four games last season.

Teams have seen what Tarrant can do with the ball. In addition to his two punt returns for touchdowns, he returned an interception and a fumble for touchdowns last season. He returned an interception for a touchdown against N.C. State.

Tarrant said he was slightly frustrated, which was how Johnson described him a few hours earlier, but that the only thing he can do is to keep catching them and something good will eventually happen.

With Wake Forest’s issues on offense the past two games, he may get his chance on Saturday.

The Jackets will do better if they work harder.

I was NEVER 2-7 in SEC games. I have switched to the
good guys.

Ray – I’d be careful with those comments. If our defense keeps (not) playing the way it has been, 2-7 is right around the corner for us too.

Our defense has to force a punt first. Terrant hasn’t had many chances as of late.

Wish we could see Tarrant on offense a little. He seems to be pretty electric with the ball in his hands.

Blocking on punt returns is my biggest concern. On half of the other teams punts Tarrant gets hit before he catches the ball – because we have no downfield blocking. There’s usually three GT players standing right next to him watching him get hit. We need some fire in our bellies across the board. GO JACKETS!!!

Why don’t we try and refrain from saying stupid anti UGA comments and just focus on GT and what is going on. All it does is attract all this Ha-Ha mentality and make what could be a good source of GT chatter and feedback into a rant of juvenile pot shots. I wish we could have an editor that would delete all this bashing on both sides. Maybe if you had to furnish a diploma from ANY college to be able to post here would cut back the wise cracks that add nothing to the blog.

Techmaninathens, it generates page clicks, views and money in the AJC’s pocket via advertising revenue. I think they need all the help they can get.

JT and Bostic both need to get more touches anyway they can. Walls really needs to play better at NG. Barns is in there in certain packages, but he needs to play more because he has the size for NG.

Well said Spider.
Techman is just fed up with all the poor sportsmanship of mostly teenagers on both sides.
I could not help but want Uga to lose three straight because it shut most of their’s up.

I’d like to see ANYBODY on the field who can play defense.
Wasn’t that Bill Lewis’s ghost I saw walking the sideline Saturday? He came to haunt another unimaginative offense and a no-show defense like the ones he fielded.

How about letting Tarrant return Kickoffs. He is not a starter on D so why not? Let him get as many touches as he can and he would be able to see the field better returning kickoffs.

I have no way of knowing what Jerrard does in practice but I have seen the way he produces in games which stands out even more so when noone else is doing much (ei) Orange Bowl and N C St. He deserves to be introduced on the player intro video on the Tron. Not sure why just starters on offense and defense are shown and now 4 games later, the line up has changed anyway. Put the players on the Tron that deserve to be showcased. Orwin Smith is another one. It is a small gesture but a valid one.

The Mutts laughed at us beating the celler dweller MSU two years in a row. They claimed we beat the worst team in the SEC. Well guess who the worst team in the SEC is now. Bwaah, haaaa, haaa. LMFAO
