A look at Wake Forest

Wake Forest

Record: 2-2, 1-1 ACC

Last time played: Tech defeated Wake Forest 30-27 in overtime last season at Bobby Dodd Stadium.

Wake Forest on offense: The Deacons are playing two quarterbacks, redshirt sophomore Ted Stachiatis and true freshman Tanner Price. Neither have been particularly effective. Price has passed for 305 yards and rushed for 154, while Stachiatis has passed for 131 and rushed for 164. They happen to be the team’s leading rushers, as well. Chris Givens has emerged as the go-to target, with nine reception for 212 yards.

Wake Forest on defense: The Deacons aren’t very effective at stopping opponents. They are giving up 40 points and 467.2 yards per game. Defensive end Kyle Wilber is the biggest threat; he has five sacks and 11 tackles for losses this season. He only weighs 235 pounds, but uses his speed to get around the edge. Tech hasn’t been very good at pass-blocking this season, so they may not ask Joshua Nesbitt to drop back too often.

Wake Forest on special teams: Because they’ve gotten a lot of practice this season, the Deacons are very good at returning kicks, averaging 22 yards on 23 attempts. Specialist Jimmy Newman is 2-for-3 on field goal attempts this season and Shane Popham is averaging 41.4 yards per punt.

What you should know: In one of those weird scheduling quirks for the conference, Tech hasn’t played in Winston-Salem since 2003.

What you might not know: Wake Forest has an undergraduate enrollment of 4,569 students. It is the smallest among BCS schools.

Coach: Jim Grobe, 61-53 in 10 seasons at Wake Forest, 94-86-1 overall.

I feel sorry for Wake this week, CPJ takes out a little frustration and hangs 60+ on the Deacs….Won’t even be a contest!

and to think I waited 9 months for college football- two programs with a combined record of 3 – 5 and they haven’t even hit the hardest part of the schedule, yet. GT – UGA tickets should be easy to get this year!

D, can you ask CPJ if there are plans to utilize anyone else in the BBack position? Any plans to simplify the defense? Thougth Allen was great on the receiving end of the short pass out of the pocket but not much good with two fumbles and breaking through the lines. Just wondering

Didn’t learn our lesson from the Kansas game and came out flat (especially on offense) against a team much better that Kansas. Hope we’ve learned out lesson this time. We can still have a decent season if we come out with intensity and focus for every game but there are no gimme’s on our schedule. Go Jackets!

The reason that State’s D-line was in our backfield every play and Nate Irving was all over the field making plays on Saturday was due to playing a 3rd string center with NO game experience. Here’s hoping Bedford and/or Finch get healthy before we head to Wake.

Wake had a QB leave the game with a possible concussion.
Tech has one playing with bad eyesight….just kidding.

Hope Tech does like FSU and gets half a hundred. Hate to miss that game but will be out of town.

Jeckly and Hyde
Most disappointed with blocked punt.
Yeah those blocked punt td’s count three times as much as a regular score.
No Paul, you just are getting outcoached and your play calling has been bad this year. You don’t go from 10-2 reg season to this. And you’ve never been 2-0 in the acc.

I wish you reporters would ask the coach tough questions. You’re all so afraid of him.

In your next interview, ask him what Nesbitt’s completion percentage for passes is for this year. Then ask how that compares to the other QB’s in the conference. ‘Action based on facts’ tell him when he gives you the business about it doesn’t matter or he doesn’t know.

Apparently linemen are leaving the state faster than we can recruit them.

In a state with such strong HS football programs where are our linemen going? Are we under-recuiting linemen in state? (Duh – YES!)

Who are the current recruits for our lines?

I am a GT fan but will say flat out that Wake is the most beautiful campus in the ACC.

In August I picked GT to win 8 games. I had them beating Kansas & State and losing to Carolina. So what do I know?

But if they plan on winning 8 games they had better get it going.

I can see why the defense is still struggling with the change to the 3-4 anb the fact we weren’t very good on D last year. But what about all the preseason talk about the strong competetion on GT’s offensive line? I continue to see GT’s O linemen get completely manhandled by opposing defenses.

The blocked punt was a turn around point in motivation, but these kids need to learn when to dig deep. Most of them did not look like they wanted to be there and I lost count of the missed and lazy blocks/tackles. Hopefully Bedford and/or Finch are back because with the center making the line blocking assignments we are in deep trouble without one of them. The D looked ready to play for the first quarter but then just went to sleep. NC State played a good game, but the GT players did a lot to make sure NC State won.

buzzzz,
UGA was terrible last year and GT played lazy and lost and if you have not been paying attention they are sleep walking again this season. The lack of motivation is amazing and we fans are in for a long season with the lack of effort and focus this team has shown so far.

Buzzzz! last year our 2nd loss came at the end of November. We’ve lost 2 before October. Unless they figure out some things, there’s no way we hang with Clemson, VT, Miami or UGA (salvaging their season by beating us just like last year). The way we look now, even the MTS & UVA games are questionable. The blocked punt was early. After scoring 14 in 50 seconds we were within 3 points with 12+ minutes left. We should have had the mo then, but we came out & let them move right back down the field – that’s what bothered me.

got to say there were so many GT bloggers on here before and after the SC STATE GAME predicting 7 and oh..I mentioned I was surprised none of you were concerned about Kansas back then. Now I would like to know from real GT fans only what went wrong in your opinions. Those who thought we were loaded and now you see we are not, or is it more than that? Please tell me what isn’t happening that you thought would for sure. I believe the players although young are not mentally prepared as they should be. Over two mistakes a game and it kills this team. But I also believe coaching should make more adjustments and/or changes to get more production on both O and D. I also believe Wake is no pushover and yes our team could end up making their QB look like another superstar. All of our opponents want revenge from last year and they all come with their A games on, count on it.

Fair weather fans sure don’t help anything. I’ve watched GT for 60 years, we’ve had our share of great times and low times. Fact is now, we don’t have enough good players to make any offense or defense work well. Couple that with what appears to be no enthusiasm and we get predictable results. To rant on firing coaches every time something doesn’t go your way only qualifies you as a jerk. CPJ and staff have the job of motivating players, they aren;t getting it done. I don’t like but can accept getting whipped by a better team, I can’t swallow what looks like lack of effort. Bostic and Smith looked decent and if the starters can’t make a play, it’s time to try fresh legs.Since we can’t make player trades midseason, I suggest we suck it up, support our Jackets and stop whining.

Hear the old curmudgeon: 1943 S.E.C. Tech went 3-3, then did not lose again, and wound up winning the S.E.C., and winning the Sugar Bowl. 1971 independent Tech went 2-4, then straightened up and went to the Peach (now Chick-fil-A) Bowl. Don’t fall apart because of a 2-2 start.

So here is the deal. We are caught between two recruiting classes. The remnants of the great class of 2007. The throw together class of 2008 (this class almost does not count except for a couple pretty decent guys) and the coming on guys of the CPJ recruiting. Look at the offensive and defensive lines if you want evidence of where the classes are causing us to suffer. Inexperience on the 2009 and 2010 class trying to play up a level. The playmakers of the 2007 class gone except for one. The no-man’s land fill-in guys who have created a gap in talent in the 2008 class. The real play-making talent is basically very young (Bostic), or very inexperienced (Hill and Orwin Smith), or suspended (Drummond), or hurt (Chris Jackson). On the D look for Brandon Watts, Julian Burnett, Isaiah Johnson, Louis Young, Jeremiah Attachiou, Shawn Green, Jemeas Thomas (red-shirt) and even TJ Barnes to start really showing us something in the 3-4 as they grow up in it. This year, meh… You play with what you got….
