Nesbitt jokes he may go into acting

Vote for me, my friends.

With those words, Georgia Tech quarterback Joshua Nesbitt’s Heisman campaign has started.

Spoofing the “Most Interesting Man in the World” commercials for Dos Equis beer, Georgia Tech has taken a humorous approach to try and help Nesbitt become the first Yellow Jacket to win the Heisman Trophy, given annually to college football’s best player.

On a website devoted to him, nesbitt4heisman.com, Nesbitt will give a weekly take on a different aspect of football, from punting, to going for it on fourth down. At the end of each video Nesbitt says, “Vote for me, my friends,” instead of the “Stay thirsty, my friends,” made famous by the Equis pitchman.

“I was happy for the whole situation, but overall just happy putting the team out there,” Nesbitt said. “When you look at the site you think of Georgia Tech. It’s great for the program.”

Tech’s entire campaign costs less than $500, or the cost of the tuxedo that was rented for Nesbitt to wear and a photographer to shoot a few photos. Tech coach Paul Johnson said he liked what he saw of the spot.

“It’s catchy. It’s good,” Johnson said. “He’s certainly deserving. Hopefully, he’ll have his best year.”

As for what it will take to win, Johnson answered with his typically dry humor.

“Get more votes than the other guy,” he said. After the laughter died down, Johnson elaborated a bit, saying that a player can’t go out and try to win the Heisman. All he can do is go out and try to win the games.

Nesbitt did a lot of that last year, leading Tech to an 11-3 record and the ACC championship. He passed for 1,701 yards and rushed for 1,037 yards. With 2,079 yards in three seasons, Nesbitt has already rushed for more yards than any quarterback in Tech’s history and is just the second to rush and pass for more than 1,000 yards in a season. A Greene County High School product, Nesbitt needs 692 yards to become the most prolific rushing quarterback in ACC history.

The videos for the Heisman campaign were shot on Aug. 4 at Opera, a local nightclub that former Tech quarterback Taylor Bennett works for. They donated a three-hour window of time for the Tech to shoot the spots. A company that handles Tech’s online media guides put together the website for free.

In the videos, Nesbitt wears a tuxedo and football cleats, while teammates, Tech cheerleaders and dance team members, and Buzz mill about in the background, just like beautiful people do in the TV commercials. Former teammates sing Nesbitt’s praises. In one, guard Cord Howard says that Nesbitt once fumbled to see what it felt like, didn’t like it, and snatched the ball back. As Howard’s voice-over plays, there is video playing of Nesbitt famously snatching a fumble away from FSU linebacker Nigel Carr in last season’s 49-44 win in Tallahassee. The scripts were a collaborative effort from Tech’s sports information department and videographers.

The website features photo galleries of Nesbitt, video highlights, story links, downloadable items and a comments section.

Nesbitt said he ad-libbed a little bit during the shoot to personalize it. He said he also may go into acting. “I’m the next Denzel Washington,” he joked.

Nesbitt’s teammates said they have no problem with him getting more attention.

“If he just keeping doing what he does, I think he’ll be fine,” defensive end Jason Peters said. “He’s shown that he has the talent, that he has the presence, that he has the arm. I just hope everything works well for him.”

Florida State is the only other ACC school to start a Heisman campaign this season. They began promoting quarterback Christian Ponder at the ACC media meetings in Greensboro in July by handing out leather notebooks and cards. Last season, Clemson used a life-size poster of running back C.J. Spiller to tout his Heisman chances.

The last Tech player to have a Heisman campaign was Joe Hamilton in 1999. He finished second. The theme was “Hamilton for Heisman.” The campaign included mouse pads, a website, envelopes and mailing labels featuring Hamilton. Mike Finn, formerly Tech’s sports information director who now works in a similar capacity for the ACC, said the entire campaign cost “a couple thousand dollars.” He and former assistant SID Allison George, who now works at Georgia State, put the push together. Interestingly, it was the first time that a CD was used to promote a player.

“I thought it made a difference. It got his name out,” Finn said. “It got a nice bump for him in the preseason with the CD going out. People really took notice of him.”

MVP on his own team? Probably so. But any chance of the Heisman is nothing more than a feel good story for the Tech fans and a pipe dream…AJ Green has a better chance than Nesbitt especially if he returns punts too.

I am a UGA alum and fan. I think Nesbitt should have a great chance of winning it. He is tough as nails and a great athlete. I would rather see him win it than a player from TN, FL or AL. It’s funny stuff. I hope he has an even better year than in the past. If he and Anthony Allen are both clikcing and having better years that’s awesome. If Roddy Jones is also having a great year then watch out. If that happens AND the defense is better then there’s just going to be no way our offense gets shut down for any length of game (bc CPJ adjusts quick and our O tires out D’s.)

Good, publicity, but be sure to make it COUNT! WIN EVERY GAME!

Waisting your time and not going to happen but, I guess he is the only player you can get excited about at Tech. QB’s are judge on passing yardage and TD throws not by how many yards they run. They will give it to a RB before they give it to a running QB.

I don’t think Nesbitt will get realistic consideration, but stranger things have happened. Mark Ingram’s heisman trophy campaign took at hit with his knee injury. If Nesbitt can play like Joe in 1999, he will at least be in the discussion. If Nesbitt can run the offense efficiently, manage the game, gain 1,000 on the ground, and complete 55% to 60% of his passes then his numbers should be good enough to merit consideration. Then he only needs a couple of signature wins and/or some signature performances in a loss and he would likely be top 3 in the voting.

bgdawg

in all seriousness though, i really think nesbitt is a good player for his system, but when you stick a guy who can run at QB in the triple option, it doesn’t mean he should get the heisman just because he racked up a lot of rushing yards or because he knew when to pitch it or hold it. i say if he wants a shot at the heisman he needs to pass for 2,000 yards 10-13 TDs with a 60%completion rating, and less than 6 ints. if he stays in his range of rushing stats he could have a chance if his team goes undefeated

Nesbitt is a great athlete and runner–no question. He’s a guy that any college coach would want on his team (perhaps not at QB).
That said, this Heisman business is laughable. Last year vs. Clemson (in game 1), Nesbitt was 4 for 17 and threw 2 INTs–not exactly Heisman numbers. I mean seriously, the guy completed half as many passes to the other team as he did his own. Again, lots of talent, yes. Heisman, no chance. I have seen better arms on clocks.

I am sure every UGA fan here made fun of the Joe Hamilton for Heisman campaign, too. (Yeah right, like a 5′9″ QB could win the Heisman). I am certainly not saying that Nesbitt is going to win the Heisman, but the way the Heisman is set up, a deserving QB is going to win it before a deserving running back. And intangible leadership qualities are going to count (see Toretto, Gino and Ward, Charlie). Look, it is going to be tough for Joshua to get serious consideration, but if he improves his completion percentage and Tech keeps winning, he could be in a position to get those all important signature wins in late October and early November. IF he does that, I think he is absolutely in the discussion.

I love Josh and all the hard work and playing he has done at GT. He is tough as nails but there is no way he can get the votes. Voters want passing yards and passing TD’s, but why not try to promote him it will not hurt anything or anyone. Yeah, this whole bit about UGA players getting arrested is so tired and uninteresting. With the exception of Mett, who was subsequently kicked off the team, the rest of the arrests are “college kids being college kids” things, e.g. drinking and such. I fully understand that at GT, drinking and such are perhaps less prevalent and D & D, LARPing and foam weapon building are more the thing to do. Sadly, no one arrests you for running around pretending your a level 4 wizard and yet you get arrested for drinking underage. Such is life.

Not a chance, but don’t blame Tech for jumping in the propoganda game, its what sells these days. Look at ESPN, they push the teams they want to period. Example…NDame, Cubs, Vtech, Uconn BB…etc…etc.

Quincy Carter was a Heisman candidate before the season one year too… and that didn’t turn out very well. Tech fans better hope all this “hype” doesn’t go to Nesbitt’s head. Nesbitt should let his play on the field do all the talking. He is a great player but he won’t win the Heisman for 2 reasons… 1.) Tech doesn’t get enough national attention. 2.) Tech is probably going to lose at least 4 games (possible Tech loses – @ Kansas, @ Clemson, @ VT, Miami, @ UGA)

@ Wreckem,

And breaking the law does not necessarily make something wrong–it just makes it illegal. There is nothing wrong with college kids drinking and having a good time, so long as they do not hurt anyone.

Regarding the topic at hand, here is a copy of my previous post:

Nesbitt is a great athlete and runner–no question. He’s a guy that any college coach would want on his team (perhaps not at QB).
That said, this Heisman business is laughable. Last year vs. Clemson (in game 1), Nesbitt was 4 for 17 and threw 2 INTs–not exactly Heisman numbers. I mean seriously, the guy completed half as many passes to the other team as he did his own. Again, lots of talent, yes. Heisman, no chance. I have seen better arms on clocks.

Well it is about time! He is very deserving to be a serious candidate this year after what he has accomplished! All football fans in this state regardless of allegiance should be pulling for this outstanding football player! The Atlanta sports media should be ashamed of themselves for not pushing this right after last seasons ACC Championship! We live in the premier city in the Southeast and our sportswriters need to get behind our great athletes, who accomplish great things! For example, Martin Prado should be on everyone’s radar for National League MVP instead of Pujols and Votto. Who both play in small stadiums and hit home runs! The Braves would be in third place in the East without Prado instead of the second best record in the league! You guys have the batting champion: Infante, the rookie of the year: Hayward, the MVP: Prado, the Cy Young: Hudson, and the comeback player of the year: Wagner all playing on the same team potentially and not one word in the media about it!

Don’t think he has a great shot by any means but I won’t waste time rooting against him for something I don’t care about. That being said, since it is really more of an individual award and not one designed soley for the university/institution, is it legal under NCAA rules for the club to provide its services at no charge? To all the UGA haters, you sound stupid when you belittle the Nesbitt for Heisman campaign. Josh is a warrior, and he proved that against you guys two years ago. He proved it last year against FSU. He proved it last year against VT. IF he improves his passing, and IF Tech wins all its early games like I expect them to, then you are going to hear the rumblings. IF Nesbitt starts appearing on some Heisman watch lists prior to our tough stretch in late October and early November, he will have an opportunity to put up a signature win, particularly the game against VT on Thursday night or the Miami game.

Just a few examples of the “well rounded student athletes” coming out of the Flats.

This is the part where the Techies go crying to mommy because a UGA fan is being a big fat meanie. They can call our players thugs, criminals, and illterates but won’t be able to take their own medicine. Watch and see. Classic Techie hypocrisy.

Taylor Bennett, not on the team! CMR has a responsibility to UGA as the leader of the football team to try to ensure that these behavior things don’t happen. Maybe its dumb luck that all those players got arrested, and maybe its a deeper issue… I don’t know.

What I do know is that both Tech and UGA should have solid records this year, with each having 8-9 wins when they meet. Now for GT with its recruiting classes that is acceptable. At UGA, that is clearly underachieving, because if Dawg fans have shown us anything, its that football is above all.
