Nesbitt’s Heisman campaign starts Tuesday

Georgia Tech will unveil its Heisman Trophy campaign for quarterback Joshua Nesbitt on Tuesday.

Watch for a website, www.nesbitt4heisman.com, to go live by 2 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

Nesbitt, a 6-foot-1, 217-pound senior, passed for 1,701 yards and rushed for 1,037 yards last season to lead the Yellow Jackets to the ACC championship. He is considered an outside contender for the award. Alabama running back Mark Ingram, who won the award last season, is the favorite to win it again this season. The last quarterback from an option team to win the Heisman was Nebraska’s Eric Crouch in 2001.

Though the trophy is named after Tech’s first coach, John Heisman, who went 102-29-7 from 1904-19, no Yellow Jacket has ever won college football’s most prestigious trophy, given annually to the sport’s best player.

With 2,079 yards in three seasons, Nesbitt has already rushed for more yards than any quarterback in Tech’s history and is just the second to rush and pass for more than 1,000 yards in a season. A Greene County High School product, Nesbitt needs 692 yards to become the most prolific rushing quarterback in ACC history.

Nesbitt deserves to be a candidate. I didn’t see Ponder(fsu), Wilson(ncst), Harris(miami) or Parker(clemson) leading their team to the ACC championship. It was long time coming, congrats Josh and go get’em!

Sad (but true) that a Heisman run needs to be marketed. Once, only the individual stats counted (along with a won – loss record).

Eric Crouch won the Heisman Trophy while throwing 5 or 7 TD’s and 10 interceptions!

Joshua has a much better TD/INT ratio, but his completion% has to be a little bit north of 50%

Joshua Nesbitt is the most interesting college football player in the country.

Lothridge got snubbed also. The word was that Staubach meant more to his team than Lothridge. All Billy did was run the ball, throw the ball, punt the ball, kick the ball for extra points and field goals and kick the damn ball off after scores.I saw him play and can tell you no one meant more to his team than Billy Lothridge. I’m still ticked off that he didn’t win it.As much as I like Joshua,I beleive the only chance of him winning the award is if Tech goes undefeated and brings home the Nat. Championship.

Hey UGA fans, we aren’t stupid. We know that Tech probably has to go undefeated and Nesbitt will need a better completion % and still needs to run for over 1000 yards. But he will be the focus this year with no BayBay or Dwyer. So it is not unbelievable that he can win. I have never seen a Tech QB with more grit and heart than Nesbitt. Even if he doesn’t have a chance, he still deserves some respect for the way he plays the game.

Tech never gets any respect, hence my name, and we are used to it. That may be the whole reason why I am a Tech fan, the underdog factor. I’m not sure what I would do if they got all the recruits and won all the time. I guess I would then be a UGA fan, oh wait, UGA gets all the recruits but fails at the winning.

With the O-Line getting bigger stronger and faster Joshua will do great things this year. If he rushes for 1000 and passes for 2400 he would be the first ever 3000/5000 qb in D-I history. Throw in 30+ wins with another good season and he will be a lock for the top 3. See you in NYC in December!!!

Billy Lothridge (1963) and Joe Hamilton (1999) both got snubbed, but both did come in second. The Heisman Trophy should be won based on performance on the field. Nesbitt is an excellent candidate and should be in the running. If he can get off to a good start and Tech wins the first five games then a marketing campaign can begin to help. It is about time that the Heisman Trophy comes home to one of the main historic headquarters of Coach John Heisman. I’m looking at my “Hamilton for Heisman” mouse pad as I type this. Go Joshua!

the comments from the GT fans on this blog are awesome. Rodney Dangerfield, I agree with you, Nesbitt will have to do twice as much as other quarterbacks to get half the respect but if anyone can pull that off it is NESBITT. He is a team leader, game changer and I wish him the best of luck this season in his career. JOSH(joshua), if you are reading these comments, there are GT fans that do indeed think you are the best QB in the country and a definite Heisman candidate. We will support you and rally for you because we know how the media is and wants to disrepect you. Go get ‘em

And before anyone brings up Nesbitt’s performance in the Orange Bowl, I didn’t see Bama’s Mark Ingram do anything in the Sugar Bowl loss against Utah and he won a Heisman, so what is your point.

“get real”…for the record Nesbitt has already beaten Georgia once (Classic City) and if you doggies hadn’t done the usual stuff last year twisting ankle, etc.(he would have been in the game a little more and you didn’t want that did you?) things might have been a little different. Congratulations on your win last year. No sour grapes here, just stating the facts. Nesbitt is a better passer than you think and he is a much better leader and gritty runner than anyone I can think of, even east of Atlanta.

here’s the deal, there will be a Nesbitt for Heisman campaign and no one cares what you idiot morons think. I realize that you have nothing else to worry about being that you have bragged about winning another national title now for 29 years and it still hasn’t happened. And not many around to remember the one you did win 30 years ago and the kids do not care..so some of you brag about the national titles the SEC has won but since none of those titles are ugays, what does that have to do with you? If Miami or VT won a national title, I would not be on here bragging about either one of them. Like CPJ, I would hoping to devise a plan to beat them. You people are so J E A L O U S over every little thing. It is not GT’s fault that year in and year out you have 5 star recruiting classes and no national titles to show for it. Maybe you need to start pointing the finger at you own football program. Ever thought of that?

Bug Z if Nesbitt can’t pass then why did he have more yards than Bobo’s qb at mutt u? J. Cox threw for fewer yards than a running qb in NESBITT. The greatest qbs Richt has ever benn around he did nothing to make them better. Jim Kelly took his job in college. C. Ward learned so much from Richt he became a NBA point guard after his Heisman trophy year. Richt taught Winkie how to get a MLB pitchers arm, right. Richt has not made a qb get better ever. Richt was blessed to have QBs with more talent than he knew what to do with. He just used their skill set o make the team better, but he never made the qds better. If you think different then you need to stop smoking the mushrooms growing on the field from the cesspool of the south.

5150…..uhhh…..If you care to look at numbers David Greene is the second winningest QB in CFB history, Shockley won a SEC championship in his only year as a starter, and Stafford was a number 1 pick…..So, there goes your theory……Joe Cox was a dissappointment indeed but also did’nt have the skill set….A Murray though, does….Charlie Ward was never a true QB but Richt turned him into one of the most dynamic QB’s ever in the college game.

Bug Z David greene was a great qb on the bootleg fake. Richt may have tought him that, but Green had the gust to stand with his back to the line until he turned and threw the pass. Q. Carter and DJ were jokes and you know it. Don’t even try that sales pitch or you will get Reggie Ball thrown up at you. Richt didn’t teach Stafford a thing because Bobo was his position caoach and Bobo didn’t teach Matt t have a HUGE arm. Richt didn’t teach Weinke to have a pro baseball players arm or to be a 4 year NFL age QB. Richt taught C. Ward how to be a NBA point guard right? Ward ran around and then threw the ball as deep as he could after the D broke down and the WRs got behind the D. Richt taught C Ward that trick right? If Richt is worthhis money then why don’t all the major colleges needing a coach at least ask to speak to Richt? Why didn’t UT call to talk to Bobo if he is so good? Mane the last UGA Head Coach to get a job after UGA? Name one Uga OC that got a head coaching job after leaving UGA? The last coach from UGA that left an was a Head coach was Erk Russell at GSU. GSU didn’t have a team before Erk showed up. Who was the OC that got ERK a National Championship in 85? PAUL JOHNSON. without Paul Erk would not have a dog house to sleep in.

The Heisman Trophy is a popularity contest and Nesbitt isnt popular enough. It doesnt matter his stats, he would pretty much have to lead us to an undefeated record and the MNC to even be considered. More then likely someone from the SEC or Big 10 who doesnt deserve it will win it like Ingram last year.

ok 5150. First off, Q carter never played on any Richt coached team you idiot!. 2nd, David Green is the second all time winningest QB in NCAA history. 3rd, DJ Shockley won a SEC title in his only year as a starter and also a BCS game(which you guys have never done). And no, Richt nor Bobo did’nt teach Stafford the big arm thing as you say but they did coach him up enough to end up a number one draft pick so obviously somethings being taught right……Now, even as mad as I get at Bobo at times, he’s sure doing something right against you losers…..look at the record……Oh, and by the way, you brought up Reggie Balls name. Realistically do I think Nesbitt is going to win the Heisman, No. However, I think he has a chance to be in the mix much like Joe in 1999. If he has that kind of season where he is running the offense efficiently, moving the ball on the ground and completing 55%-60% of his passes, then he will have as good a shot as anyone. I remember Joe in the 1999 game at FSU throwing the ball all over the field and putting up a Heisman-worthy performance even in a loss. Nesbitt would have to play like that and have a couple of signature wins as well as possibly some signature performances even in losses.

wintervilledawg,
Thanks for the level-headed, even-keeled comments. There are a few of you UGA fans like that out there. UGA should be much improved on defense and after Murray gets his feet wet a little bit, also somewhat improved in the passing game. Both Tech and UGA should go into their rivalry game with nine to ten wins, so it should be a good one this year.

HERSCHEL WAS SCREWED

August 31st, 2010

Undoubtedly, Herschel Walker was screwed his freshman year. Everyone knows the only reason he did not get the Heisman is because it had never been given to a freshman or even sophomore up to that point. Without Herschel, Dawgs go 8-4, maybe 9-3.
