A rockin’ good Tech mailbag

I asked for your help in putting together a mailbag, you graciously answered with lots of good questions.

Now, it’s my turn to answer. Just a few days until Georgia Tech starts the season against S.C. State at Bobby Dodd Stadium.

Here are your questions (mostly unedited) in bold, and my answers in plain text. Enjoy.

I haven’t heard much about the Jackets special teams so far. What’s going on with those teams? Should we assume Jerrard Tarrant will be returning punts and Orwin Smith will return kickoffs? Have they worked out anybody else (i.e. incoming freshman or RS freshman) at the special team skill positions? BJ Bostic perhaps?

Tarrant will return punts this season, something he did very well last season with two returns for TDs. Smith will return kicks, something he did very well last season. Don’t be surprised if Bostic gets on the field as kick-returner.

What’s the update on Chris Jackson the transfer from Alabama. I heard he was injured but I never heard the extent of the injury or when he might be back.

Jackson has a torn hamstring. He will not be back this season. He has two seasons remaining after this.

Of the two safeties in the 3-4 scheme – how is GT determining who is the “strong” safety and who is the “free” safety of the group? Will they be playing a “field” CB and a “Boundary” CB or will they be just LCBs and RCBs? Who will be the “Mike” LB, the “Jack” LB, the “Sam” LB, and the “Will” LB? Are the DEs going to flip-flop (strong or weak), or is there going to be a LDE and a RDE?

All those positions, within their groups, are somewhat interchangeable.

Are the GT students planning another Stadium White Out this year? and when is it?

N.C. State on Sept. 25 will be the white out game. Kickoff is TBA.

How many teams on the schedule have extra time to prepare for GT this season?

S.C. State, North Carolina, Virginia Tech, N.C. State and Georgia. Some have an extra week, some extra days.

Will the shotgun be used this year at all, and will we be able to run from it as well as pass as other teams do. It seems to me that running from the shotgun, if we plan on using it, will be mandatory in order to keep the defense honest.

I think you will see some shotgun this season, but I’m not sure when. We’ve heard hints, saw some instances in the spring. It’ll be interesting to see.

Any word on McCoy? I heard he was not in classes so that does not look good as far as helping this season. Just wondering if there was more to the injury that took him out in the first place. Any word on who will handle field goals? Last but not least with Chris Jackson out this season does he have two or three years of eligibility left?

McCoy could be cleared to practice at any point. A smart young man, he has been in classes. Scott Blair will handle field goals. As for Jackson, see above. Two seasons left after this season.

I was wondering about Daniel McKayhan. Is he still with the program, & if so, have the injuries at WR & his play elevated him up the depth chart?

He is slotted to return kicks, but didn’t crack the two-deep at WR.

What will be the bigger improvement on defense: scheme or the fact that our front seven is almost 10 pounds bigger per man this year?

I’m surprised that it took this many questions before we received one about weight. I think scheme will make the bigger difference. I think this scheme fits well with Tech’s talent, particularly at linebacker, which has a lot of athletes.

What player will be surprise impact player this year?
My guess is Richard Watson, what say you?
Maybe someone who is not preseason all ACC, but will be by end of the year.

This may not be a surprise, but I think Roddy Jones is going to have a great year. Last year was individually disappointing for Jones, who saw his production almost halved when compared to the 2008 season. The broken wrist sustained during the spring really hampered him.

Defensively, I think Steven Sylvester could become a force on defense, as will Kyle Jackson.

Who are they looking to substitute into the game in the their nickel package? Dime package?

Rashaad Reid and Rod Sweeting, I believe, will be the nickel and dime guys. But that’s more of an educated guess on my part.

Rumor has it we may wind up in the Chick Filet Kickoff next year or the year after and that word will be coming down shortly, supposedly with a Big 12 team but I have heard one or two say a Pac 12 team. Are you hearing any of these rumors??

I have heard this and looked into it. As of three weeks ago, there’s nothing to it. However, I’ll inquire again this week. The Chick-fil-A people have had ESPN on hand for two consecutive seasons, which will now be three. I’m sure they would like to add a fourth. Who would draw well with Georgia Tech that would get the nation’s attention? Oregon? Oklahoma? Notre Dame? USC? And is next year, with no Nesbitt, no Allen, no Jefferson, no Barrick, no Bedford, no Butler, among others, the year that the Jackets want to play that game?

Also, is running two separate offensive lines a possibility? Or will we substitute as normal? I would have to think it would be weird to have two centers snapping to Joshua during the course of a game. Who are the best blocking AB’s and WR’s?

Running two lines is a possibility. Of course, Johnson broached that possibility before last season and it didn’t happen for a variety of reasons. I doubt it happens this year. The best blockers are the ones in the starting lineup: Roddy Jones and Embry Peeples, Stephen Hill and Kevin Cone.

Alright guys, thanks for the fun.

Let me ask you this, are there any specific kinds of blog topics that you would like for me to do on a weekly basis now that the season has started?

After we win the World Championship again this year in pig skin, what will our total be? Most say it’s around 24, but I’ve heard in reality it’s closer to 30. Do you have the actual count? Thanks so much. TTYL!!!!!

James,

The actual count is 27 national championships. Due to southern bias and jealousy of GT over the decades, many of these titles have been given to others. But don’t let anyone fool you. Even if a mountain town’s paper declared a school national championship back in 1945, it counts.

Hey Doug, Couple of items for a “weekly blog” entry: (1) GT has done very well the past two years in national rankings for YPG, Rushing yards, points per game, Big plays, etc. I think a Monday blog with GT’s national standing in these 3-5 statistical areas would save me an online research trip into the NCAA Data Warehouse. Likewise, maybe add the team goal or two that deal with trackable stats … so that we know how the team is tracking on THOSE goals through the season as well.

August 27th Washaun Ealey has been suspended for at least the Sept. 4 opener against Louisiana-Lafayette after an early-Friday arrest for hit-and-run of a parked vehicle and driving with a suspended license.

I wonder if WA_SHAN would have pulled his trick for most any other team in the country , would he be suspended for only one game? He is getting off lightly because he is one infraction out of many for the woofers. (You can’t do away with the entire team)! The entire BULLDAWG NATION, would have to do something else this season. Have you looked at the area around their football stadium? Or have you seen our stadium , after the nation has trashed it ?They could spend the spare time cleaning up and going to AA meetings. Whats next for the nation….stay tuned…

It is an achilles. The hamstring, whose real name I couldn’t possibly begin to know, stretches all the way down the back of the leg. Sometimes an achilles is referred to as a hamstring. Achilles would be more correct.

Funny, the reason I currently use that handle is because of jackasses like you who are so obsessed with GT sports that they would rather post on GT blogs than on their own. I don’t need to include THUGa to be relevant, because even in the SEC THUGa is totally irrelevant. And to answer your previous question regarding Ealey, if he had pulled that stunt at any school where ethics is more important than winning, he would definitely have been suspended for more than one game—not to mention a totally irrelevant game.

FUNNY you dawgs are so stupid with the RING thing and Hall think. Hall had charges reduced because he didn’t hit his girlfriend. He was leaving. He pushed her off him and slamed the door upon exit. HE WAS TRYING TO LEAVE A BAD SCEEN. Tech was getting the RINGS before the UGA was even played, but after winning in Athens the Seniors wanted to put the Drought breaking score on the ring. Funny, yes, we do believe that, because it was printed in the paper. Charges against Hall were either reduced or dropped. And Tarrant’s charges were proved to be false and therefore dropped. What Houston did was after he left Tech. Richt only kicks guys off the team because the pressure is so great that he has no choice. Otherwise, it’s just like with Ealey—a meaningless one-game suspension. Stuff that in your red panties and smoke it.

And you really believe that Hall would have been kicked off the team??? Doing the things he was charged with are considered normal up there in Athens.

yeah, I do believe he would have been kicked off the team in Athens. Montrez Robinson was booted for a VERY similar offense. Tarrant would of been kicked off the team also. HYPOCRITS REIGN SUPREME IN NERDLAND!!!!!!

August 30th, 2010
10:54 am

Funny, you are correct that Tarrant had to sit out a year because of the charges, BUT THE CHARGES WERE COMPLETELY DROPPED. That is why he is now playing. He was the victim of somebody making false charges just like the Duke Lacrosse players. And the charges against Hal were dropped (or at least reduced) too, because the claim was never substantiated. I believe Slippery already cleared that up. If you can read, you should have known that already anyway. How can you claim that behavior problems are tolerated more at Tech? How many THUGa players have been arrested in the past 12 months? How many Tech players have been arrested in that same time period. THUGa has NEVER NEVER NEVER properly disciplined troublesome players. I guess this goes back to the time of Wally Butts, who was undoubtedly the biggest lush in the coaching world. If you’re going to tolerate a coach’s recalcitrance, then you have no choice but to tolerate that of the players as well.

I don’t know anything about “Montrez” Robinson, but Montez Robinson was a serial offender against the law.

“Georgia coach Mark Richt announced Sunday night that Robinson was no longer a part of the team. Robinson was in the Clarke County jail on a misdemeanor charge of simple domestic battery.

It’s his third brush with the law in the past six months, and Richt said in a release that Robinson “had not been able to conform to some conditions and stipulations that were placed on him as a result of previous off-field issues.”

Robinson had already been suspended for the first two games of the 2010 season as a result of his previous arrests, and he also missed the bowl game last season.”

The part that says “charges were dropped”. Why were they? Because he played football for Tech – that’s why. Consider youself lucky that your players are there in the ghetto where that kind of behavior is tolerated. There is such a thing as a “pay off” and giving a kid a warning. In Athens, there is no such thing. Don’t cast stones in glass houses Techmites. BTW, I think the UGA players are getting disciplined. Funny, obviously you are an ignoramus. The charges were not dropped by Tech; they were dropped by the government prosecutors, because the charges were proved to be false. The same thing happened to the Duke Lacrosse players, and yet jerks like you still want to blame them for something that NEVER HAPPENED. The claims made against Tarrant were unsubstantiated and FALSE. Why should he not play for Tech? Why should any athlete against whom false charges were made and subsequently dropped not play for a given school? The difference here is that charges have never been dropped against any of the thugs at THUGa, and yet some of them only get slaps on the wrist by CMR and his staff.

FZunny CHARGES were Dropped against uga players for gropping a Pregnant female. Players saw he in a dorm hallway and started rubbing and touching her belly. Those charges were dropped. Why can you say payoff too? HAHAHA. Sometimes people are innocent of or deserve lesser charges.

That is correct, Funny, misdemeanours and felonies are two separate things. The charges made against Hall were reduced to misdemeanour charges or dropped completely—–again NOT by Tech, but by the government prosecutors. All charges, whether misdemeanour or felony were dropped against Tarrant, because no crime of any sort was determined to have occurred.

john,

now go research the # of brushes with the law that GT had and how many of those went unpunished and got “swept under the rug”. I thought Pajamas coached at the Navy. Shouldn’t he be more of a discliplinarian? Sexual assault and battery being tolerated by Tech is nothing to gloat about. Demand action if you want to be fair across the board. Otherwise keep your piehole shut about disciplining players- something that doesn’t happen at Nerdland.

Funny, why don’t you tell us what UNDROPPED charges of sexual assault and battery have been tolerated at Tech or by Johnson? I know why you don’t tell us; it’s because there are none. I would say that John has done a pretty damn good job of cataloging the charges and subsequent disciplinary actions (if any) against THUGa players. Why don’t you do the same before you open that ignorant piehole of yours again.

Funny, so I guess you are saying that the Duke Lacrosse players were freed because Duke paid somebody off too? Boy, you are one ignorant ass. Charges are dropped because no evidence of a crime being committed was ever found. The ones who should be in jail are the ones who leveled the false charges to begin with. Why don’t you try dealing with facts instead of predjudiced conjecture. If you say there was some kind of payoff, then prove it, bubba, or keep your piehole shut. To be perfectly honest, I don’t remember the facts about Houston while in school, so I won’t comment on that. I DO know, however, that he got in far more serious trouble after he left Tech, than while he was at Tech.

Wait, I do remember some of the deal with Houston. It was not a case of Tech ALLOWING him to play. Some judge somewhere REQUIRED that he be allowed to play. I don’t think too many people at Tech were pleased with that decision, but it was a judge’s decision, not Tech’s.

Ok, I will note that UGA has dismissed a lot of their most egregious offenders from the team. Bravo. As far the Ealey situation, 1 game sounds about right. He made a stupid decision, college kids do it all the time. It did not appear that any alcohol was involved, although one has to wonder. I will say that each situation has to be looked at individually within overall context for that student-athlete’s behavior. I believe that coaches should be firm and consistent with discipline so that the other student athletes on the team can see the consequences. However, these are also 19 year old kids and I do not agree with making an example out of one student just to set a precedent. So that means that the discipline has to be consistent from the beginning. Then the logical conclusion you can draw from this is that anytime their is a coaching change from a more lax system of discipline to a more strict regime, there could be issues.

You can’t make that kind of stuff up.

You’re telling me that Bobby Jones never accomplished anything while at Tech??? GIVE ME A BREAK!!!! He didn’t just rise from obscurity after finishing Tech. I have no idea whether they even had a collegiate golf national tournament back then, but he was already recognized for his talents while in school. Kuchar won the US Amateur while at Tech. Duval came in second in the NCAA tournament while a senior, even though the team did not win. I’m sorry Tech has not won an NCAA championship in golf, but team championships in what is really an individual game obviously don’t indicate the true quality of the individuals on the team. You mutts always want to talk about how important it is to succeed in the pros (in football, at least). Well, in golf, Tech players have done far better in the pro world than have the mutts, regardless of the NCAA championships. And of course, Bobby Jones succeeded without even going pro; he remained an amateur for the length of his career.

Delbert, I said Jones retained his amateur status, didn’t I? If I didn’t, I meant to.

You’re right about Tech’s home jersey color, although we have worn Gold more often over the last 30 years than before then. The only thing different about a Whiteout was that the fans were encouraged to wear white, and that WAS a student orginization idea. We have had two Whiteouts, and the football team won both times. I hear that the NC State game this year will be a Whiteout, and I fully expect the Jackets to win that one too.

Did the fans in the stands wear black for THUGa’s blackout against Auburn in 2007, or in the Sugar Bowl or the 2009 Gators game? I don’t know, and I really don’t care. I don’t see how an away game or a bowl game could be a -out, unless more that 75% of the fans in the stands wore that particular color. I DO know though that the blackout against Bama in 2008 was a disaster. If the 2007 Auburn game was a fan blackout, and not just the team wearing black jerseys, then THUGa is one-and-one at home for blackouts.

Wow this blog went ugly quick. Funny your debating skills are horrible and you might want to read up on the law before making blanket comments. I cannot argue much in the Tarrant case other than to say that if a statement was made by th victim and there was no evidence to prove otherwise at the time then the police were more than likely obligated to make an arrest. In Hall’s case the police would have no choice but to make the arrest. Under CDV law all one party has to do is give a written statement saying that they were assaulted and if it can’t be proven that it did not occur then th police have to make an arrest, this situation was also elevated due to injuries, that were later proven to come by another manner than originally reported. As far as CPJ handling these situations both players were suspended by him and the AD for a year. Tarrant was allowed back on the team after sitting out a year when all charges were dismissed and Hall’s suspension was lifted after charges were reduced. These players were diciplined way more than UGAs players have been. Ealey even lied to the coaching staff because he knew he was suspened and wanted and told them he would not drive.

I am a little confused. How can you have a blackout at a game that isn’t at home (Sugar Bowl)? Now I have no doubt that since that Sugar Bowl was here in ATL that UGA’s fans dominated the stands. But come on, can you call it a true black out at a Bowl game?
