Notes of importance from Tech’s media day

Before I work on my story, here are some of the highlights from the press conference (please remember that a lot of this could change during the next month):

  • Freshman Isaiah Johnson will play this year, according to coach Paul Johnson.
  • Johnson implied that Charles Perkins may redshirt because of the depth at B-back and A-back. Again, that could change.
  • They are trying to find a spot for B.J. Bostic to get him on the field.
  • Brad Jefferson has picked up the 3-4 defense very easily, according to DC Al Groh.
  • This is the deepest team Johnson has had since he arrived at Tech.
  • Anthony Allen will have a good year, so says Johnson.
  • Groh declined to say why he thought last year’s defense gave up so many big plays (more than 60 of at least 20 yards), preferring to focus on this year. Johnson implied that there were many issues, but “want to” seemed to be a big one.
  • Every spot on the offensive line, including at center where All-ACC performer Sean Bedford returns, is up for grabs.
  • When asked how much more passing the offense may do this season, Johnson said dryly “Oh, lots.”
  • Groh said there have been some issues with putting in the 3-4, but it’s not anything that he hasn’t experience in previous stops.
  • Johnson says Joshua Nesbitt is going to have his best year. That he’s faster and quicker than at any one point since he enrolled.
  • Anthony Allen likely won’t play any A-back this season.

Great report Doug. Can’t wait to see the action. Coach Johnson is all fired up and the team has bought in to the 3-4. Go Jackets!

One thing I’m not excited to hear is that AA wont play any Aback, which I believe a mistake because he could still be quite useful there if the oline is not creating the holes there and he could also just be used as a decoy there to to shift the focus. I don’t like this decision.

Considering how well we’ve reloaded each year, for CPJ to say this is the “deepest” team he’s seen is. . . .scary. CPJ is the master of understatements, and he’s sounded more positive this year than any of the others.

Just got back from fan day. Had a great time. CPJs reference to the amount of passing in the O this year – “Oh, a lot” [of it] – is interesting. Hill looks a little thicker this year. Looking forward to this season!

I am getting very excited after hearing all this today. Alot of little things are falling in to place. Out of all the players we lost last year Morgan hurt us the most. I think Hill will step right in for bebe.

Tech fan day, oh heck is that what that was? I thought the Varisty or the Apparel Mart was having a back to school sale.

Tech can afford to be a lot less productive on offense if the defense
is good. It doesn’t have to be great. Last year’s defense was
pathetic. But they may not be less productive on offense at all.
Tech is in exactly the right position now, lowered expectations,
but better actual potential overall.

Lucky21 I think CPJ has made it pretty clear that he knows what he is doing so I dont think it is a mistake. By the way if you watched any of this offense you can get the bback out on corners for the pitch. but thanks for tring

When PJ displays that sly-dryness personality, you can count on a good year. Tech’s gonna be better this year than some people think. The amount of success depends on how much the D improves. Don’t worry about the O, it’ll be there.
