My guess is, offensive depth chart is fairly set, barring injuries. CPJ knew what he had to work with before the spring, so I’m confident he knew what he had leaving the spring too. Coach Groh is likely to shuffle things around when he sees who has absorbed/retained more of the defense since they left spring and he’d be more likely to find an incoming freshman who fits a need on defense and can perform well enough than CPJ would on offense (no OL is going to come in cold and start for CPJ, and the QB, BBack, ABack depth charts are too deep for a freshman to start, WR might be a spot, but they didn’t even sign any WR).

RDR – You do know that Reggie Ball graduated a few years back right? 8 wins? Alabama, Florida, and LSU. Who else plays in that conference?

Wow, Doug, I didn’t mean for you to take this so personally. Hundreds of people comment on these every day, and most of the posts are much more incoherent than mine. I understand that you post often, and I do follow you on twitter, but I think I speak for many Tech fans who believe there could be more content in the blog. With the access you have to players, coaches and other members of the media, you should be able to bring a lot more insight than bloggers who just do it as a hobby or people posting on forums. If you check out fromtherumbleseat.com, you can see how much content they generate. A lot of proprietary statistical analysis and stuff like that, and all they use is stats from Georgia Tech that you can find on the internet. The AJC is the main Atlanta paper and Georgia Tech is the biggest collegiate sports program in Atlanta. I think there should be a better partnership.

That is a very mature comment, RambleOn84. I had no idea I was going to get my head bitten off for commenting on the quality of this blog as it related to others. It really just stems from me being an extremely passionate Georgia Tech fan who can’t consume enough information about the teams he loves. I check the AJC more than any other site and have probably read every single one of Doug’s 280 blog posts, and I haven’t said anything until now. Went to high school with Perk, was in the band and so by default watched him his sophomore and junior years (I’m a year older, he didn’t play varsity as a freshman). Dude’s a nasty, nasty runner. I think he’s very comparable to Dwyer in a lot of senses….if not better. Word I keep hearing is he’s on the “Anthony Allen plan”, where he started as an A-Back last year and then filled in as B-Back once Dwyer left. He’ll likely be a very valuable B-Back in the coming years.

I heard CPJ rented a practice bubble this year and Joshua Nesbitt is going to be the only one practicing in it. He’s gonna have the no contact jersey, pants, neon helmet, 4 body guards, and a car alarm strapped to his ankle in case anyone decides to touch him on the way to dinner. Just some preseason precautions……
My point is this….I wonder how much CPJ worries about Nesbitt going down before the first snap. I know I’m worried. The dude has been a warrior the past few years and it has to be taking its toll on him…and w/ ankle surgery and not getting hit this spring or being hit in over 7 months- I’m sure everyone is a bit nervous.

bgdawg, the SEC was pretty top heavy last year. After Alabama, Florida and LSU there were no other teams with a winning SEC record and LSU got smacked around by Penn State at the end. Your number 4 team ended the season with a loss to Mississippi St and a win against an Ok State team that turned the ball over 6 times in the 4th quarter alone. Your number 5 team got killed by VT. Face it. Last year the SEC was Alabama, Florida and a bunch of average to below average teams. That is the definition of top heavy.

I”m surprised that TJ Barnes is 3rd string as big as he is as a NT, are Walls and Anderson that much better from a skill perspective?

Doug, any chance you could get last year’s depth chart w/ height & weight? To me, the front 7 looks a lot bigger than last year and the O-line looks to be a bit bigger as well. Since getting pushed around at times was a concern, I think we’d all be very interested to hear if the team is getting bigger?

RDR, we will be sticking around after the game, but not for humble pie. Actually, we’ll be the ones taking memorial shreds of your shrubbery!

bgdawg, you call it a trample because you ran for 300 yards. You guys couldn’t force us to punt? Is that still a trample if we your defense can’t stop our offense? Your team was also in line to lose the game with 2 minutes to go.
You won, fair and square. But, I wouldn’t call it a trampling when you win by less than a touchdown and almost lose the game.
By the way, if you think you’ll ever win against an Al Groh defense without stopping our offense half the time, you’re nuts! Here’s to hoping we’re both 11-0 come COFH.

Last post, I promise. The weight (according to scout.com) for last year’s O-line averaged 278 vs. this year’s line at 287. 9 lbs heavier per man. That helps against Iowa, maybe enough to win.
Last year’s front 7 averaged 255 vs. this year’s 261. That’s a huge difference. The number might not seem so different, but when you consider that we’ve got one less heavy in there and an extra LB, that’s a lot! So, we’re going to be bigger AND faster on defense this year. That’s probably enough difference to force at least one punt against UGA, which would have won us the game.

@ tokyo jacket: anyone could do some damage on offense when facing willy’s D i mean look at tennesee, they destroyed us with there offense. so saying that we couldn’t get you guys to punt really isn’t a huge suprise to me and pretty much the entire dawg nation everyone looked at our D and pretty much scorched it. a defense is only as good as its coordinator. thats why everyone is excited about the dawgs D this year.

BG, same comment goes for Dave Womack’s D. Even more same comment about Coach Al Groh. I think your D will be good. I think our D will be better. Honestly, Groh has the better resume. Old man jokes and the fact that he’s not a great HC aside, I don’t think anyone can make an argument that they have a better DC in either the SEC or ACC except maybe Bama and VT.
Our guy has got a superbowl ring, coached a guy named Lawrence Taylor (pre-rapist, pre-coke head), and turned down not one but two NFL hall of fame coaches (Bellichik and Parcells) to coach defense at GT. Your guy might get there one day, but he ain’t where Groh is now.

Tokyo …
“bgdawg” is the epitome of many dog fans. B/c their team got rid of an underachieving D-Coord they are automatically going to be much better. Yet they are ‘uga-blinded’ to accept the fact that GT also has replaced an underachieving D-Coord.
AG has been around and seen/done more in football than TG. Not saying that TG won’t be good, but just to assume that the dog D is going be a force b/c he’s the NEW DC is that ‘blind-dog’ think talking.
And I’ve said it plenty of times too about last year’s game vs. GA ……… they rushed for 340 yds (would be like GT rushing for 600+), and were only able to win by 6? Who knows what would’ve happened had D Thomas caught the 4th down throw. Can you imagine the dog uproar had they “Run this State” and still lost 31-30?? PJ’s a great coach, and I would think GT’s D can only get better. So he’s 1-1 vs GA with a bad D in both games: Stafford 407 passing, 5tds in 2008 GA 42pts — 340 rushing yds in 2009 GA 30 pts. If the D is better under AG I don’t see all these dog fans being “blinded” for much longer.

I don’t know how you are suprised tj barnes is 3rd string. did you watch any of the spring?? I think that Luke Cox should have been second string at bback last year, but he was stuck playing goaline duty at A Back. After starting every game in 2008 the coaching staff really gave Cox the shaft b/c he had knee surgery and missed the spring of 09. He showed us this spring that he still can play and I don’t think we would miss a beat at BBack if Allen got hurt this fall which I hope never happens. I am suprised that Anderson is at NT instead of end though. THWG!!!

Pretty young at the all-important guard spots. Hope those fellas can make the dive work. Everyone’s looking at the Iowa game plan, and those guys will get a lot of pressure.
