Anthony Allen is one of the most entertaining players on Georgia Tech’s team. One only needs to follow him on twitter at Ant_Allen18 or join him on facebook at AnthonyAllen to get a glimpse of his personality.
Allen sat down with the media on Wednesday and talked about everything from his footwear to the August goals for the team. The questions and answers have been paraphrased in some instances.
On being left off the preseason All-ACC team:
That’s why it’s a preseason All-ACC team. Im not going to worry about it.
Does it bother you that you and the team are being overlooked?
We’re used to being the underdogs, being written off before the season. We’ll use it as motivation. We haven’t gained the respect, we have to go take it.
On moving from A-back to B-back:
Playing in an offense period you have to know all the positions.
Playing A-back last year, this year I know on certain blocks and certain plays where the blocks are coming from.
On what he and quarterback Joshua Nesbitt have done this summer to improve their chemistry:
We’ve worked on snaps a lot this summer. Working in the weight room and on the field, getting our timing together and meshing up.
On the defense:
They are going to be tough. There’s a different energy level out there. I’m really excited about the defense.
On the two new guards:
Omoregie Uzzi been working this offseason, he’s been moving a little better.
Will Jackson is one of the most improved lifters. The whole line has been working together in the offseason, staying low, working on their drives.
On Cooper Taylor, who is up to 225 pounds:
I don’t know…something happened when he got that heart surgery. I want to get heart surgery. I guess they increased the blood flow or something. He’s like 6-5, 225. He walked by me the other day, I was like …I have to check myself.
Coop’s been working hard this offseason. He wants to get back on the field.
On how he hopes to improve:
Finishing runs..I think I finished runs. But last year, I liked to kill my legs on contact. I’ve been driving my legs in drills, pulling sleds. Get my leg power up.
On his size:
I’ve lost weight. I’m 225 now. My body fat went down and I gained more muscle mass. Ideal weight. Shave a few seconds off my time.
I’m blowing by guys in drills. I can’t name any names.
Even blowing past Cooper?
No. Cooper goes and gets the ball at its highest point. Cooper is 6-12 now.
On the difference between playing A-back, where he was last season, and B-back:
Playing B-back you have to have that mentality that you are going to get it up in there [between the tackles]. You have to explode through the hole. If you watch film of the Iowa game, if you are timid through the hole the DE can check you.
Has coach Johnson said if you’re going to play some A-back as well as B-back this year?
We talked about it after the spring. I don’t know what’s going to happen. I’ll play whatever I have to play. I may have to play QB some too. Drop back and throw it as far as I can…which would be about 15 yards.
Anything you aren’t looking forward to in August?
The heat..it’s going to be hot as heck.
On if he’s the best singer on the team:
That’s me singing on facebook. I’m singing for real.
My range is so good I usually don’t do it in the lockeroom because of the acoustics. I have to be in a studio.
On the nature of his outgoing personality:
I’ve been a real outgoinig social person my whole life. Always the new kid in school but I make friends fast.
This social networking thing, I’ve seen guys use it to their advantage. I’m putting my team out there. Even though we’re in Atlanta, we’re often overshadowed.
Are you worried that it could hurt you in the NFL draft? That teams may not want a player who promotes himself like an Ochocinco?
I feel like it’s a 50-50. As much as it can hurt you it can help you.
Right now I’m just doing it to get my team out there. We’re coming to defend our title this year.
I’m just having fun with it. They don’t let you have fun on the football field anymore with the penalties.
Have you been working on any videos for the scoreboard this year?
Working on them now. Working with the GTGs.
It’s going to look very similar to a few commercials on TV today. It’ll spoof. Have to come to Bobby Dodd . 1-888-techtix or go on ramblinwreck.com. Buy them fast, they are going.
What are your goals for August? For you and the team?
For the team, I want to see a more unified team. Come together and play as a team. Not just the offense, the defense, the B-backs. One common goal that we are all trying to reach. I don’t want to see five guys with one goal and one guy with something else.
Was that a problem last year?
Every team usually has that. We didn’t have that too much. I want to solve the problem before it actually happens.
What have you been doing to unify the team?
Been having team time with Chaplain Moore. Everybody’s been hanging out, staying in the same dorm, having fun with each other. If you walk by the ULC you’ll see us hanging out. It gets so hot we have to take our shirts off. People see Brad Jefferson they may walk in another direction.Brad has gotten humungous. His arm is the size of my body right now.
Who have been the vocal leaders this offseason?
Roddy Jones and Sean Bedford. Sean is the smartest man I ever met in my life, so I listen to whatever he says.
Joshua’s been a lot more vocal in the offseason.
