Was Al Groh hired because you wanted to go to the 3-4?
“It didn’t have to be a 3-4, it just happened to be his system. Any time you can get a coach like that, with that much experience and success, it’s great for our program.
“Al is a great football coach. He has a lot of energy and I think he’s going to be good for our program. We’re excited about having a guy like that on our staff.
“I think our players are excited about the direction. (Last year) we struggled to stop the run, we struggled in getting the other team off the field.”
What are your thoughts on being picked third in the Coastal Division?
“They had to pick somebody and we lost some key players. I think we can be competitive.”
Do you allow other teams to come visit during the spring to study your offense?
We have a lot of people visit during the spring. I have a commitment to guys who have coached with me. We have a lot of teams visit, but we’re not going to let a team visit that plays Navy or Georgia Southern or teams like that.
Is it important to have a senior at quarterback?
“I think it’s real important to have a guy in his third year as a starting quarterback. He has a lot of assets. He’s tough, he’s competitive and he hates to lose. Those are good things to have.”
Will Anthony Allen step in and replace Jonathan Dwyer?
“I think Anthony can be a good player. We’ve also got some other guys at that position – Lucas Cox, Richard Watson, Preston Lyons. I think Anthony is a very good player. I hope our production doesn’t drop off at that position and I don’t think it will.”
Can you talk about the Coastal Division?
“It’s extremely tough. There’s a lot of good teams. In my mind, there is not a weak link in the division. You have to be ready to play every Saturday. It’s a tough schedule on the road for us in the league.”
Is the ACC any closer to producing a national champion?
“I don’t know. Certainly there are some good teams. A lot of it will depend on being healthy and how well they mesh together. I think we’ve got four or five teams that could emerge as a national championship contender.”
Were you satisfied with the offensive line in the spring?
“I think we’ve got a chance to better on the offensive line. We’re going to be young there. I’m cautiously optimistic that we can be a better football team.”

GA Tech has always been the underdog for the last 25+ years. I’d rather opponents over look us.
I think Tech will be a better team this year compared to last year. Yes, key players were lost. But, other talent has stepped in without much of a loss in level. Nesbitt will look at more than just one receiver. Many players can run the ball. The defense will be better.
I don’t see overall GA Tech losing any ground.

Paul Johnson really doesn’t pull any punches… “cautiously optimistic” is probably the exact right description for how Tech fans should approach the season, but I’d like to see a little more fire and excitement. I think we can be sure of a few things: Anthony Allen will produce at the B-back position, possibly even better than Dwyer; Josh Nesbitt will be the engine of our team and can will us to win in some situations where we should probably lose; Roddy Jones will pick right back up where he left off before Allen came into the picture; Stephen Hill is a great pure talent, and our wide receiving production won’t suffer too much overall; our defense will end up being better despite the loss of a couple of great players. All of this basically means that we should be about the same on offense (one of the best in the league) with some improvement in defense (the only thing that cost us any games last year. There was no one we couldn’t score on.)
The big difference this year is the quality of the competition. But think about last year… It was all hype then, too. VT is the giant of the league, UNC is going to do great things this year, Miami and FSU are on the rise, Clemson has too much talent to keep losing… It’s all speculation, and the Jackets keep winning it on the field. I am willing to bet that we’ll be undefeated heading into the VT game, and that game is going to decide who ends up in a BCS bowl.

Bill Curry has to be the most impressive man to have coached at The Flats. Bobby Ross – helluva competitor! George O’Leary – great to impersonate, outstanding coach. Paul Johnson fits in very nicely with those guys. As a UGA grad (and fan), I have the highest amount of respect for Tech and everything it entails. I’d speculate The Coastal ranking to be Miami, VaTech and Georgia Tech, each with 2 conference losses, 1 division loss. It may come down to one of the 3rd tie-breakers. All sorts of dependencies, like whether all 3 QBs are healthy. All backups are unproven.
Miami is #52 in % lettermen returning. They are huge on the OL, averaging 317 lbs (C is smallest at 300 lb). However, 2 OL are new starters, RS FR and SO. The backups are just as big, nobody under 300 lb, with 3 over 315 lbs. The defense is filled with experience. The only starting sophs are the 2 safeties. 3 of the 2-deep DTs are over 300 lbs. Allen Bailey, DE is a SR, 4 yr letterman at 6′4, 288 and was 1st team All-ACC at DT last year. Miami used running back by committee last year, and #2 and #4 return. WR is better, with both starters returning. QB Harris has to improve his TD/INT ratio, 24 and 17 in 2009.
VaTech has a very young team (#101 in % lettermen returning). Returning TB Ryan Williams rushed for over 1,600 yards last year. 2 OL top 300 lbs, barely. The line is SO-SO-JR-SO RS FR. CB’s are FR-JR, S’s are JR SO. All back DBs are SO or FR. All 3 starting LBs are RS FR. Starting DEs are rather light, at 229 and 239. QB Tyrod Taylor passed for over 2,300 yards with a 149 QB rating.
Other than Ryan Williams, who is a great RB, I can’t see why the media picked VaTech 1st. Jacory Harris is a better passing QB than Taylor, but he had a couple of bad games last year. I’ll go ahead and speculate that Miami meets FSU for the title.

Folks, Johnson didn’t get here due to lack of knowledge of how to coach. Maybe his strength is also his weakness, he is loyal. Finally, he hired a knowledgeable defense co-ordinator. Probably through attrition. But hired none the less. The defense should be fresh constantly as the offense will exert ball control. Lotsw of people nationwide will finally get introduction to Johnson’s offensive mind. It will be fun. Just hang onto your britches and enjoy the ride.

Tech beats our Dawgs once in nine years and we get bashed for going to Shrieveport? At least we know the Gators have owned us recently and act accordingly…and I thought you guys would know statistics better! I hope Tech is 11-0 when they roll in to Athens! As always see you at the top of Baxter hill next to the Redneck Party Bus!

Wow some of these UGA fans sure do spend a whole lot of time obsessing over GT. I would tell you it’s okay you can come over and play, but I think we all know there is a reason you feel the need to go grade school with “nerd” comments and could not live up to mommie and daddie expectations and get into GT or UGA for that matter.

southside,
Do you ever think before you speak? UGA should “own” GT by the fact that UGA will recruit off the short bus as long as they can play ball. The big difference between GT and Fla. is Fla. recruits similar to UGA and they hand you your arse in a hat and you squeck by GT every year with one or two blowouts thrown in. You never “dominate” us as some of you love to claim and it eats you alive that a group of “nerds” can hang till the end with your “superior” athletes.
