A look at Georgia Tech’s wide receivers
Switching from the safeties, we take a look at Georgia Tech’s wide receivers:
THE WIDE RECEIVERS
- Returning starters: Kevin Cone, Stephen Hill, Tyler Melton.
- Others to watch: Quentin Sims, Daniel McKayhan, Jeremy Moore.
- Key losses: Demaryius Thomas, who is now with the NFL’s Denver Broncos.
- Key fact: Four Tech receivers, not including A-backs or B-backs, caught passes last season for 1,355 yards.
- Key question: Thomas was responsible for 1,154 of those yards. Who will replace that?
- Key question 2: Who will become quarterback Joshua Nesbitt’s go-to guy, not only for those long threats but when crucial first downs are needed? Hill and Melton will likely be the starters. Hill seems to be the player everyone thinks will be the next Thomas, but until the games start it’s hard to say. All of the wide receivers have similar builds, though none are close to Thomas’ 6-3, 230 pounds.
- Outlook: It depends upon expectations. If it’s expected that someone is going to come in catch 1,000 yards of passes, as Thomas did, then you will likely be disappointed. If it’s expected that the receivers are going to combine to catch more than 1,500 yards, then you will likely be happy.

I think the receivers will be fine. I know coach preston will do a good job with them. Hill is the best playmaker, but I don’t know if he can block as good as some of the other receivers which is just as important in this type of offense

Jack – Three started games opposite Thomas last year. Cone, 1st 3 games, Hill, game 4, Melton all the rest. Melton was injured for the 1st 4 games, Cone was injured for games 7 – 13.

no way the WRs catch a total 1500 yards. The ball will be distributed to the A-backs more this year, they will be getting too many of the few touches to let the WRs catch 1500 yards. My guess. hill get 800-900 yards the others get 300-400 yards, while tha a-backs catch over 500.

This isn’t intended as a swipe, but shouldn’t you be more worried about their blocking ability? If an option team is really clicking, it only takes a mediocre QB and receiver to burn a D for a quick 25-30 yds.

I would love to see this group get 1500 yards, but as others have said we could have a lot more success if we get the a-backs going in the passing game as well. Hopefully this will be the year that happens more a la the vandy game with peeples I think.

The bigger question is who can get the ball to them, Thomas made a lot of great catch’s last year.
Nesbitts accuracy must improve. No experience 11 catchs between Hill and Melton.

I think the passings game’s in for a big transition. Lots of short passes, maybe some screen passes, hell, we were outta the shotgun in the spring. PJ knows he doesn’t have another bay-bay until Hill fully develops next year so in the meantime he’s gotta get tricky. Besides, if Nesbitt remembered that he was recruited as a passing QB and remembered how to pass we would’ve been 14-0 last season, I think they realize that.

More palpable nervousness from the Georgia fans; I love it!
I would echo what a previous poster mentioned D.Thomas’ value as a run blocker. Thomas is indeed a huge loss as a pass catcher, but his absence might be most acutely felt in terms of his blocking ability as his blowing up corners and safeties was often what sprung those long runs. Here’s hoping S. Hill keeps putting on the lbs (while remaining fast) and becomes the next great GT receiver in the spread option offense.

In this offense, receivers will always be able to get open and have a lot of man to man coverage. The question is can Nesbitt get the ball to them on time and with accuracy. When we get a QB (and I love what Nesbitt does for this team) that can execute the option and throw the ball accurately, this offense will be impossible to stop.

If Calvin were coming out of high school now, CPJ wouldn’t have a chance. Using D. Thomas as his proof, I think CPJ can get at least one 4-star level kid every two years to come in. Stephen Hill was the first example. He needs to get another 4-star caliber kid this recruiting season to keep that pace. Also need to continue developing Hill into a 1000-yd receiver who can block.

Wow the nervous UGA fans sure got on here quick. Hill has actually put on more weight and is something like 215 now. The big question is wether they can block as well as Thomas and are as strong. I think Cone can block out well, but he is far from being proven as a recieving threat. Hill Can bring the ball in, but did little in the way of blocking. Melton and Sims have some skills and hopefulloy they can help spread the field. The a-backs should be a better threat in short passes with Roddy healthy and the hand back to 100% and I expect some deep routes to Jackson from the a-back position. The big question is can the line give Nesbitt that extra few seconds needed. Nesbitt has the ability, but he has little time to get a good QB’WR relationship going and little time while throwing on the run.

Georgia Tech doesn’t need a 1,000 yard receiver to replace Thomas. Yes, Stephen Hill has to produce up to his considerable skill level, but Nesbitt/CPJ have got to distribute the ball to others better than the in the past 2 years.
In Johnson’s final year at Navy, 4 receivers combined for 921 yds, between 10 and 13 catches each for the 2007 season. 4 others combined for 318 yds: 8, 7, 6, 5 and 1 catches. 136 pass attempts in 13 games, 145.4 passing efficiency.
In 2009, the Georgia Tech receivers had 48, 8, 6, 5, 5, 5, 2, and 1 catches. 168 pass attempts in 14 games, 149.6 passing efficiency.

one tech fan – Yeah, they lost to Delaware. And Ball St. Navy was outmanned on defense in most of the games; evidenced by scores such as 74-62, 59-52, 48-45, 46-43 and 46-42 (those last 3 were wins over Pitt, Duke and Notre Dame.) They also gave up 44 to Wake and 41 to Rutgers.

Guys we are not a passing offense nore do we have the o line to pass like CPJ wants to. Settle down O line will be young but better and who needs to pass when you can run the ball. Delbert, I noticed a few of those games were overtimes, not going back to look at how many , but they lost 4 games,(point being bad defenses are an M.O. of PJ teams).I am afraid the ACC is going to be much better this year, that will be bad news for PJ.
Our Defense is still very suspect to say the least, new scheme , two biggest playmakers gone, and nothing I have seen as far as blue chip recruits. But this about receivers we are banking on a 3 star kid who had originally committed to UCF to be a star? Beleive expectations need to be tempered.

The problem with your posts is that you base them on opinion with little to no facts and think ever GT fan should just say because he thinks it it must be true. Like your earlier post, are you saying he had trouble recruiting for Navy so therefor his defense sucked or are you saying that his Ga. Southern NC team had bad defenses. Comparing either team to GT is stupid and you give him no credit for firing the DC and finding one who will hopefully fix the D problems. Your dislike for Nesbitt also makes no sense. UGA wanted him when he was #2 in Ga. and #16 in the country as a passing QB. He has done a great job at GT and hopefully will have a great senior season. I don’t care who you put back there for GT over the last two years as QB anybody would have struggled at QB in passing with the bad pass protection. GT fans love Nesbitt despite this because he guts it out every down and you know he will give 100% and attempt to improve.
Now if we could gets refs on our side for the WR who cares who’s throwing the ball.

Silly, UGA did recruit Nesbitt, but not as a QB , Nesbitt wanted to go to UGA. Kid grew up following the Dawgs, He wasn’t elite 11 ,Nesbitt a great football player .

Blue Pants, Jackson will play RB. He played WR and scat back in high school. He’s the quintessential A-back – half WR, half RB.
Reality, I appreciate you admitting that UGA will lose 4 this year. I think only 3 for UGA because of your schedule.
Tech on the other hand is more of an unknown. They might be like Miami last year: good team, but wicked tough schedule. We’ll know the most about GT after the UNC game. If we’re 3-0 after UNC w/ 500 passing yards, we’ll be in great shape as a team. If we win at UNC, there’s NO reason we shouldn’t be 7-0 when we go to Clemson (whom we’ve beaten 6 of 7). But, if we lose at UNC, we could easily unravel early. I’m thinking no more than three losses this year.

Or a loss at UNC might be what wakes the team up like UM did last year. The UNC game scares me because we ran all over the field on them last season just like we did UM the season before and both were suppose to have the D to stop GT the season we walked all over them. I agree though if we can get by UNC there is no reason to not have another great season being that they will have one of the best defenses we will face.

Silly, I agree with you. My point was that we’ll know a lot more with a win than a loss at that point. I think momentum is one of the most important things in college football. If we win at UNC, we really should be 7-0. A loss puts us at 6-1 driving up to Clemson really not necessarily knowing what to expect.

Stephen Hill will dominate at the WR position. Hill was a 4-Star recruit coming out of High School by Scout.com. Hill will surprise many with his production but there are many more who know the kid and are fully aware of what he is capable of that will not be surprised. When he leads GT in all statistical categories for receivers in ‘10 then everyone will say “I knew he had it in him, I predicted it”. If CPJ goes to Hill as he went to Thomas, you will see some eye-popping statistics. We have already seen his flashes of brilliance. I do agree that the ball will have to spread more in the passing game, but every offense has a Go to Man, that will undoubtedly be Mr. Hill.

If you had said that LSU is the flagship team for the SEC in CWS then you would have been correct instead of somehow saying the SEC dominates the CWS. I will grant you that GT has faltered in the regionals more than once and blew it in 94, but to say the ACC is weak is stupid as are most off your comments.

Here’s how I see it:
Hill will be solid, won’t replace Bebe this year, but will have some big plays
Melton – Dude can block, period. Real team player. Very soft hands. Can run the quick screen/stiff arm play pretty well. Not fast enough as a deep vertical threat. Still is strong & can be ok possession guy. But does our offense have WR routes that suit him?
McKayhan – Aside from Moore, the guy with the most potential. Has wheels to get open on vertical routes. Good KO returner. Better athlete than people know. Could be poised for a breakout season, imo.
Moore – Still needs to get bigger and stronger for blocking & possession receiving. Not a factor this year, but as soon as he has the size he’ll be solid.
Sims – Pretty good blocker, team player. Has size but has yet to show reliable hands/natural receiving ability. If he does it would be huge for GT.
Cone – An enigma. Seems to have size/goods but erratic blocking/knowing what to do. Could this be the year he puts it all together. Good ST player.

Corey Earls moving back to WR. Definitely has the wheels to get open on vertical routes. Should be pretty strong by now….Can he block well enough to get PT? Does he have the hands to haul those balls in? We’ll see.

There are no wide receivers in baseball. I’m not so sure about the American League or the Japanese leagues.

I agree that recruiting a really good receiver will be tough. what we would be able to recruit is someone who is good at many things but is able to catch the long passes when needed. If they can block when they need and catch a few 40 yard passes a game, all will be good.
