A look at Georgia Tech’s safeties
5:00 am June 24, 2010, by Doug Roberson
Switching from the front of Georgia Tech’s defense to the back, we take a look at the safeties:
THE SAFETIES
- Returning starters: Mario Edwards, Cooper Taylor, Rashaad Reid, Dominique Reese, Jerrard Tarrant.
- Others to watch: Jemea Thomas, Isaiah Johnson, Lance Richardson.
- Key losses: Morgan Burnett, who is now with the Green Bay Packers.
- Key fact: The defense gave up 66 plays of at least 20 yards last season.
- Key question: Can the safeties put themselves in the right place at the right time to cut down on those big plays?
- Key question 2: How will Jerrard Tarrant handle safety after starting eight games at cornerback last season? He said he was recruited as a safety. Also, can he be the ballhawk that Burnett was the past two seasons when he intercepted 11 passes?
- Key question 3: Charles Kelly has taken over coaching the entire secondary, after he had the corners and former defensive coordinator Dave Wommack had the safeties last season?
- Outlook: Really, and not to be flip, but the entire defense should be better than it was last season. If new defensive coordinator Al Groh calls a lot of blitzes with the linebackers, the safeties will have to pick up those responsibilities. They all have the athletic ability, as well as the speed.
- Your turn: What say you about the safeties?

One of these hacks will probably lead the team in tackles because the front 7 is getting knocked around like a pinata. So the Georgia Tech defense will be better Doug? Old Man Groh’s defense gave up 30+ points SIX times last year at Virginia. Yeah, big pick up Techies. He’s a genius.
Is this the Tech fan blog?

I love comments who support a mascot that licks his butt and his private areas as the most significant thing they do, beside eating and crapping. Oh well, once again they have to say something about Tech, because we dominate their life, every waking moment of their life. I wonder if they blog in Gainesville, FL, but probably not, as they would pee in their pants just showing up there. Al Groh wasn’t the defensive coach of Virginia, and if you want to say something about his head coaching abilities, that I wouldn’t argue. However, his knowledge of defense is not questioned even at the NFL level. Now was UGA’s coach in the NFL, oh yeah, the one that quit there coaches the Falcons.

Dawgfan, did you mean the Dogs? What positions did Reshad Jones and Brandon Boykin play last year? They were in the top 4 for tackles for your team and it appears to me that they play in the secondary. With Curran gone, I expect the tackles by your safeties and corners will go up.

This appears to be the strongest position on the defense – both in terms of talent and depth. Reid, Reese, and Tarrant have all played CB, so in any kind of nickle package, you may see 3 safeties on the field.

Lot of talent and experience at the safety position. The competition alone will make the position better. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Groh play 3 safeties in certain situations with 1 of them playing an outside linebacker position. Talk more Georgia Tech football at: http://www.bbuzzoff.com

One of the strongest positions on the team, even with the loss of Morgan Burnett. Cooper Taylor should return full strength, and he is bigger (6′4″ 209) and faster (sub 4.4 40) than his former starting partner.
The Spring roster lists Tarrant at CB. Rainman’s posts points out the versatility of some players who are big and physical. Hidden in that versatility is the problems that Dave Wommack had in shuffling people around to find a functioning unit. The starters at safety (Burnett listad as Rover) by game reads:
Taylor Taylor Taylor Reid Reid Reid Reese Reese Reese Edwards Edwards Edwards Edwards Edwards
Reid started 4 or the last 6 games at CB. Reese started the 1st 3 at OLB.
Wommack started with 3-3 defense, but it had to be switched to a simplified 4-3 early on.
Hopefully Groh’s tutelage can turn this defensive backfield around.

Jerrard was burned a lot as a cover corner last year but looked good as a safety in practices and scrimmages this spring. Isaiah also looked like he could challenge for playing time. Definitely the most experienced part of the D. With any amount of improved pressure from Groh’s play calling, we should see the team INTs grow this year.

You know you’ve gotten through to a Techie when they start hiding behind Florida like little girls. The next step is for them to start talking starting salaries and US News and World Report rankings. That’s when you know your work is done. Its the saddest thing you will ever see in your life and very hilarious.
No Techies, we don’t have much to say to Florida. Know why? Because they beat us like a damn drum. What exactly is it about this whole bragging rights thing that you nimrods cannot comprehend? Its really very simple. We run our mouths about Tech because we CAN. Don’t blame us. Blame your team that can’t beat us more than once every 9 years. If you’re looking to point fingers and whine, which you are because that’s what Techies do, point the finger at them. Not us.
Thanks.

Two biggest issues with our secondary…
1) Derrick is gone, so our pass rush will be weaker, putting more pressure on the secondary. As was noted above, last season we gave up too many big plays even with Burnett in the lineup. This season it will be worse, unless some serious pass rushers emerge. UGA, for instance, will have a beast of an OL, even better than the one that really pushed us around last season…Murray will have all day to throw to the likes of A.J. Green if we don’t get someone on the DL to step up.
2) Our secondary don’t face a great passer (sorry, no offense Nesbitt) or great passing attack in practice. So will they be prepared? What the heck are they going to do when we go up against Harris from Miami, or Ponder from FSU, or Wilson from NC St.? Just some thoughts….not trying to be too negative.

Grantham? UGA may have the worst coaching staff in the SEC or ACC and going downhill fast.
Tech is catching up. Tennessee continues to beat UGA. UGA is watching LSU, Florida, and Alabama’s tail lights as those schools pull away. Auburn will be better this year. UGA is about like South Carolina now. Even Kentucky can beat UGA nowdays.

I don’t think it could be much worse than last season. I think coaching all of those guys together will help. I saw a lot last season where those guys weren’t on the same page. I think Tarrant to safety will be good. I think the schemes will help as well. The fact that they have starters back is good. The front 7 will be key as well. Like I said before, your back is only as good as your front. Can’t cover forever. The Kansas game will give people a good look at the secondary. They are really the only pass happy team on the schedule. Miami may fit that bill as well. Should be interesting to watch. Can’t wait to get it rolling.

Jerrard Tarrant is a playmaker, plain and simple. Both Edwards and Taylor can show up and change an enitre game. This is proven.
Again, the main question is can Groh teach his defense? If he can, and the Jackets end up with 2 or more extra posessions a game, don’t expect too many losses.

The defense is going to be better this year than it was last year for several reasons. In fact, it only needs to be marginally better and we’ll be just fine.
The comparisons to UVA’s defense are a bit off, I think. The offense at UVA was horrible because they lost both of their QBs – one to grades and one to off the field behavior. The defense was always good for them but they were on the field the whole game. Eventually, every defense would break. Also, Tech has better players. Basically, Groh’s defense will be on the field less than anyone in the nation which should make them fresher and more aggressive. If they get a handful of stops and a turnover or two, Tech will be very difficult to beat.
And for the dawg fans – be a little more creative than saying Groh got fired from UVA. If that’s your concern, than perhaps taking a more critical look at your own team would be a better use of your time given Grantham’s job history. If you want to talk smack, fine. Just be creative.

Just a few FACTS to share…you may choose to ignore the facts as usual for the sake of a good argument as you have for years, but I will share a few with you anyway!
FACT: All time record head to head: SEC leads acc 255-123
FACT: All time bowl by conference 1. SEC 196-153
5. acc 82-87
FACT: BCS bowl record: SEC 13-5
acc 2-12…worst by far in college football!
FACT: All time bowl record head to head SEC vs acc 35-14
And Techsta, as to UGA vs Tech….one need look no further than head to head which is 60-37-5!
And Techsta please explain how 2 of those teams that you include in your “serious drop off group from the SEC” SMOKED the 2 acc teams that played for the acc chumpionship in the last regular season games last year?

What, alien conspiracy theories now? Not too far off base. The UPI (United Press International) was bought in 2000 by the head of the Moonies.
Before that, they were a competitor to the AP. Since the AP was a “publishers cooperative” (monopoly) of member newspapers, they were paid much more than UPI for the same subscribers. Pre-Sun-Yung Moon, the UPI had over 6,000 reporters in over 100 countries. Now, they have fewer than 50 employees.
As to Georgia Tech’s National Poll Championship in 1990, all that Moonie stuff makes no difference. The UPI was the Coaches Poll from 1950 to 1990. The UPI formed a coalition with the National Football Foundation for 1991 and 1992 to name the MacArthur Bowl Champion. UPI reverted to a single poll in 1993-1995. In 1993 USA Today formed a coalition for the MacArthur Bowl Championship in 1993. USA Today combined with ESPN in 1997 to distribute the Coaches’ Poll, and that alliance later became part of the BCS.
Bottom line, Georgia Tech was the Coaches’ Poll National Champion in 1990. Conspiracy debunked.

Tech use to be known as LB U kind of like a PSU or something along those lines. Depth on DL and DB seem to be good. Some coaches are just better as Coordinators. The Fridge was one great OC and is good HC. Groh may be a better Coordinator than HC, eventhough he gave Tech fits as HC. Bill Armstrong if right fit in well as DC and Bud Foster at VT. We could’nt stop the cutback run last year against the big fast teams so to me that will be a key to look at. But I like the change to 4 Lbs’ with some hybrid DE/Lb’s.

Safeties are gonna be GOOD this year. There is a LOT of speed in the secondary this year. If Coop and Tarrant are playing safety, they can both just sit back and wait for the ball to come to them. Both VERY fast. Also, Tarrant has made ball skills. Look for at least two pick 6s with him at safety.
Their speed combined with scheme is what will make our safeties stand out. We don’t need Derrick Morgan in this defense. I bet if he were back this year, he’d have 6 sacks (which is a lot for a 3-4 DE). Our OLBs this year are going to be the ones that will have the sacks. Their size will help against the run. Look for a lot of pressure on QBs to help get the secondary a lot of picks, a la Tenuta’s defense. The difference between Groh and Tenuta is that Groh brings controlled pressure and has height and speed in the backfield. Groh gets consistent pressure out of the 3-4 because you never know where guys are coming from, but he doesn’t have to sell the farm to do it.

I am not speaking of records. I speak of the nonsense you have posted on here about Tech player arrests not being reported by the APD, the back room NCAA deals you allege happened to give Tech the 1990 championship, the conspiracy with the refs in the 1990 Colorado 5th down game to give them the win because the NCAA could not afford to have a “weak” team like Tech be the undisputed NC. Any of this ringing a bell?
Produce any evidence that any of these exist anywhere but in your mind and I will quit picking on you. Unfortunately, I know you will evade these questions and post some sort of diversionary nonsense about how you run this state. Either that or you will just lay off the sight for several hours. Either way, I’ve had my fun with you. Adios. Enjoy your delusion.
Oh, and for the record, I never called you a punk. I called you a punk ass bitch. Which I still contend that you are and always will be.

The defense should be better? Where do you come up with this? They lost almost their entire pass rush along with the safety who was always around the ball. I don’t see the players to run the 3-4. They don’t have the outside linebackers who are fast enough to cover when necessary. Also, just how good was the defense at Virginia, answer, not very good.

Lots of talent in GT’s defensinve backfield for sure! I like the move to S for Tarrant – maybe he can “rover” around and get some extra punt returns via INTs; the guy is a playmaker with the ball in his hands.
If the DB group stays healthy they should help the DEs & OLBs get more sacks with their ability to hold opponent’s passing in check … as long as the DL can shore up some of the rushing.
People that think Groh isn’t going to make it as DC at Tech b/c his head coaching at VA wasn’t national championship caliber are mistaken IMO. He’s got a rep of having a very good defensive mind. Many successful DCs, OCs, and position coaches don’t cut it as HCs …. all the dog fan need to do to see this glaringly obvious fact is check out how well Brian VanGorder’s stint as HC at Ga Southern went.
Groh’s going to do very well as DC for the Jackets. Just go back and check out some the phenominal defensive players he had while at VA — remember Howie Long’s kid?? Or some of the great LBs & DBs. And GT will get better talent than VA.

Anyway, we won’t miss Burnett. He was way overrated. Never chased down a back in the open & often took the wrong angle on the ball carrier. I don’t know how he got drafted, much less ahead of Dwyer.

Not sure if you are trying to insult engineers or not, but the fix would be easy if BP would just shore it up and basically give up the well or find a new way to drill in later. Problem is they do not want to lose that oil rich well so instead they are looking to tap two new daries in the system, which is not working and thus you have the problem we currently have. Did I bore you or were you being sarcastic?
On to football. I look for Taylor to return and hope he makes an immediate impact. I agree I think Tarrant has some holes, but I hope last year he knocked the rust off from sitting out a year and has a breakout year at safety. I would also like to see something on Sweeting and wonder if Bostic will get redshirted or not. All and all it has to improve from last year and hopefully I don’t have to watch another Fla. St. game again where you pray for atleast one stop. I expect recruiting to pick up on defense with Groh at the helm. Just look at our last class, four 4 star defensive players signed as soon as Groh was hired. Good time to be a JACKET!!!!!!!!

Losing Burnett is like losing anybody else to the NFL. Cooper Taylor had a correctable condition with the timing of his heartbeat. It has been corrected. Tarrant (and everybody else) should be able to play better with one coach handling all the DBs.
Georgia Tech has not updated its depth chart from 2009. I don’t know for sure who are inside and outside LBs. According to Heather Dinich of ESPN, the OLBs are Anthony Barnes and Anthony Egbuniwe, (6′4, 250) who was a DE last year.
Here are the stats for the returning linebackers (top 3 were starters):
2010 LBs*
Brad Jefferson – 6′2, 242 ____ 95 Tackles
Julian Burnett – 5′10, 221 ____ 41 Tackles
Steven Sylvester – 6′2, 233 ___ 40 Tackles
Anthony Barnes – 6′3, 243 ___16 Tackles
B.J. Machen – 6′1, 216______ 8 Tackles
Malcom Munroe – 6′3, 231 ___5 Tackles
Freshmen RS in 2009:*
Brandon Watts, 6′2, 237
True freshmen for 2010:*
Jeremy Attachou – 6′3, 233__ Wash.D.C. Archbishop Carroll
Quayshawn Nealy – 6′1, 220__ Lakeland, Fla. HS

If you looked for info on Jeremy Attochou, I mis-spelled his name. It’s “Jeremiah Attaochu”
Chip Towers had an article about him on 1-24-2010. Here is a quote from Chip’s article:
“I got to know him while Coach Groh he was at Virginia,” said Attaochu, reached by phone in D.C. Sunday not long after returning from his official visit with the Yellow Jackets. “He’s known for his defense and coaching outside linebackers all over the league. I was a defensive end in high school but he felt like I was the right guy to be an outside linebacker. He has three things in his criteria for an outside linebacker: It’s being able to beat a tight end, being able to rush the passer and being functional in space. That’s how he puts it.
“So he basically told me what my role was and that’s the kind of relationship I have with Coach Groh. He’s a smart coach and he knows how to put his players in good positions. I feel good about him and I feel good about the school.”

tech is losing a lot of talent off defense. They will be better schematically, but the overall product will be about the same. Johnson can’t recruit good defenders because nobody worth their salt wants to be chop-blocked everyday in practice. This reality is about to rear its ugly head.

one tech fan – I’ve seen that article before and it has a lot of questionable information in it.
1) Phil Smith is listed as 3rd team OT, and he was 2nd team and starter last year when Barrick was injured.
2) Cooper Taylor is listed as 2nd team safety; he is a 2-year starter at safety.
3) Osahon Tongo is listed as LB, and Egbuniwe as a DE. ESPN has those reversed. Tongo converted from LB to DE last year. Wait until August on this one, I guess.
4) Steven Sylvester is listed as 2nd team LB , and Julian Burnett 3rd team behind Brandon Watts. That would be a nice surprise, since both were key players last year and Watts was redshirted.
5) Preston Lyons is listed as 4th team B-back; last year he was #2. With Lucas Cox moved to B-back (again), Lyons may be #3, or maybe Watson showed something special in the Spring. Expect to see Cox at A-back in short yardage situations. He has scored TDs at both positions.
4) J.C. Lanier is shown as 3rd team DE. 6′4, 330 lb. DE. Maybe in goal-line situations?
5) They have Izaan Cross listed at his incoming freshman weight of 250 lbs. He’s 287 now.
6) Correy Earls is shown as 3rd team WR; Tech’s roster shows him as a DB. The roster may be wrong, unless Earl Groh has claimed him. Earls started the final 5 games at WR last year.
7) Antonio Foster is listed as 2nd team OT, true freshman at 280 lbs. He’s a redshirt FR who weighs 310 lbs.
9) Anthony Allen is listed at 225 lbs. According to the roster, he’s 239.
10) True freshman BJ Bostic is shown as 3rd team A-back, and #2 punt returner. I hope that is true, since Tech rotates 3-deep at A-back, and he is talented enough to play immediately. He enrolled in January.
10) Anyone else whose experience is listed as “HS” is suspect. They may be RS freshmen.

IMPORTANT NEWS
NC State has just announced they have hired
University of Maryland AD Debbie Yow as the new NC State AD.
So, why is that so important?
Yow was opposed to UMD considering an invitation from the Big10.
And, people familair with the UMD Athletic program know that the
UMD Athletic Program has BIG financial issues.
Look for UMD to hire a new AD who will be “more receptive”
to discussions with the Big10.
Look for the new UMD AD to have some previous experience
or relationship a Big10 program.
Also, this will probably be UMD HC Ralph Friedgen’s last season at UMD.
Jim Delaney has to be thrilled with this news.

That could be an imporant chnage at Maryland.
Big10 did put feelers out to Maryland. Yow said no.
A regime chnage at Maryland might just mean another round

For Maryland to make a chnage, it would have to be a package deal including at least one other ACC school. Probably a 4 school package.

“Johnson can’t recruit good defenders because nobody worth their salt wants to be chop-blocked everyday in practice. This reality is about to rear its ugly head.”
The poster really has no idea how many teams use zone blocking techniques. Tennessee ran it 100% last year, to name one that Georgia fans should remember. Florida State uses it.
“Chop” or more correctly called “cut” blocking is part and parcel of zone blocking. The penalty for doing cut blocking wrong is “Illegal Chop Block.”
Also, prospective recruits would not be deterred because of the number of NFL teams that use the technique. All use it to some extent, and the Redskins, Packers, Panthers, Raiders and Texans base their entire offense on it, as did the Broncos when Shanan was coach (and the Falcons, when Mora was coach). Seattle just signed a player because he had experience in it.
Alex Gibbs, line coach at Denver at the time turned a 6th round draft pick/6th string tailback into a 2,000 yard rusher and Super Bowl MVP. That guy is Terrell Davis; ring a bell? Gibbs was OL/Asst. HC for the Falcons under Mora for 1 year and special consultant for the next 2.

I reside in N Fulton County and travel all over the USA and on rare trips to Japan, Ireland and Germany.
At dinner with factory types, many of whom are engineers, we talk women, soccer ( I could care less about it ) and we talk politics and now lately, we talk about how the international business community has no respect for our Pres, etc.
On the subject of American football my dinner guests usually know of Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Alabama, Florida and Texas, Ohio State and Southern Cal ( the real USC) and University of Georgia. I will be very honest ………..they know UGA because of H. Walker and they know USC because of OJ SImpson and his trial and they know Alabama, because of the current NC and Bear Bryant. They see things in a long term view ……….not one or two years, like most college fans.
Tech? Some Germans remotely acknowledge the school but they always confuse it with Auburn, which has supplied NASA with more astronauts than any school. They don’t recognize Tech as a stellar engineering school or football school. They mention MIT, they mention Cal Poly and one knows a German kid that is in the Poly school in Marietta …………but not Ga. Tech. His parents live in E Cobb.
Tech is neither fish nor fowl. This says it all. When I ask do you know who Bobby Dodd is or do you know who Bobby Ross is or do you know who Eddie Lee Ivory is? they shake their heads in the negative.
When I name two or three ACC schools beyond UVA, they shake their heads. They know UVA because of Thomas Jefferson. They do recognize VaTech because of all the tragic shooting murders up there.
Tech is like Obama …………an urban program that gets no world wide respect.

“They mention MIT, they mention Cal Poly..”
Not a very convincing story. It would be more plausible if CalTech were mentioned in the same narrative with MIT. Cal Poly is not classified as a national university because it does not have doctoral programs. Good engineering undergrad program, ranked along with the 3 US military academies.
Sounds like those dinner participants have “file and forget” memories. Herschel Walker, OJ Simpson, Bear Bryant and who was picked as national champions last year. Next time, if there really is a next time, take notes.

I think Tech’s secondary is going to have a very good year! They’re talented and experienced which should help a lot. And they have a very good DC in Groh. I think Tarrant will fill-in Morgan’s spot rather nicely. He is just as athletic as Morgan was and he has the experience needed for Tech to improve on defense. I think Tech will win 10+ games this year ‘cuz their offense should be just as productive as last year’s with Nesbitt back at the helm and their defense is going to be much better which some people would disagree with ‘cuz of losing Derrick and Morgan, but we return 8 starters and add new DC Groh. And I’m also excited about the newcomers Ayers, Young, Holton, Johnson, and Bostic. These guys are going to help out Tech’s defense maybe not as much this year, but in the next few years they have the potential to be some great players. And I think Tech is going to get better with each year ‘cuz they’re starting to recruit some top level players and they have one of the best coaching staffs in the country. GO JACKETS!!!
