A look at Georgia Tech’s running backs

I felt bad leaving you without a blog for two weeks, so I cobbled this together, using colleague Tim Tucker’s capsule on the Georgia blog. A few more will be coming.

THE RUNNING BACKS

  • Returning starters: Anthony Allen, Embry Peeples, Roddy Jones.
  • Others to watch: So many to choose from here: Many new A-backs will see time this season including Orwin Smith (will see more time here than he did last year), Robby Godhigh and B.J. Bostic notably, along with returning vets such as Marcus Wright. At B-back, Lucas Cox was a bowling ball during the spring practice, and Richard Watson looked tough to bring down as well.
  • Key losses: The big one was B-back Jonathan Dwyer, who rushed for 1,395 yards last season and is now with the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers.
  • Key fact: The Jackets averaged 5.2 yards per attempt rushing last season. As coach Paul Johnson says, if he wants 5 yards he’ll just run the ball.
  • Key fact II: The Jackets had 36 runs of least 20 yards last season.
  • Key question: Will Allen be able to fill Dwyer’s role as a between-the-tackles runner? He’s as big as Dwyer, and his speed is such that he should be able to get extra yards when he gets into the secondary.
  • Key question 2: With Allen now at B-back, who will be the home-run threat coming off the edge on option and/or pitch plays? Jones had three 20+ runs last season and Marcus Wright had one.
  • Key question 3: Will the A-backs block better than they did last season? Johnson recently said the team left a lot of yards on the ground and said the A-backs need to hold their blocks better on the perimeter.
  • Outlook: Should be fine. Johnson has said he’ll be surprised if Allen doesn’t get 1,000 yards this season.
  • Your turn: What say you about the running backs?

I’m 1st.

In the last week, BOTH of Georgia tek’s Defensive Ends have been arrested.

1 for beating up a girl, and 1 for driving without a license driving on a suspended license and speeding 91 mph on I-75 North through Gordon County.

Add to that, that Dickie Vitale, ACC homer, has Georgia tek men’s basketball NOT RANKED in the Top 40 teams with Georgia ranked # 28, and this has been a VERY BAD WEEK for Georgia tek.

Congratulations Georgia tek on having BOTH of your Defensive Ends arrested. I note too that the AJ-C did not allow us to DISCUSS either Georgia tek DE arrested inside of a week.

30-24

73-66

2 arrests within last week of both Georgia tek DE

including beating up a girl, driving suspended license.

Nice.

Leave it to ugag fans to discuss player arrests. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.

And what is this “Georgia tek” you speak of? I’m not familiar with that school. Is it near East Georgia Community College in Athens?

What is a ugag fan doing up this early anyway, I wonder? Golden Girls marathon run a little late last night? Then again, seems like they get off on this kinda stuff.

Some advice – keep your trashy & classless comments to yourselves and your other ugag friends. Yall have a blog on here for that kinda stuff. No need for it here.

Big d dawg, i think every single one of your ugay players have been arrested at some point! You may not be #1 in the nation but you are #1 in spring arrests this year joke! Your an idiot, go back watching jerry springer re-runs and go buy some sugar bowl rings on ebay while your at it as well since your players are such losers that they sell the rings on ebay! PATHETIC!!!!

Let’s run some things down…..

A) Your football team or (dream team) went to a (DREAM BOWL) in shreveport( 2nd worst SEC BOWL)!!!

B) You lost to Kentucky at home for the 1st time since jimmy carter was president!

C) Your hoops team sat at home while GT was ranked and enjoying the NCAA tourney and played for ACC TITLE!

D) Your baseball team got swept by GT and beaten 25-6 on your OWN FIELD AND YOUR FANS POURED OUT BEFORE THE 4TH INNING! GT was in regionals, again..ugay sat at home!!!!

I just want to say that in football, we finished ranked ahead of you last year in all polls, were ranked ahead of you in basketball in all polls last year and finished ahead of ugay in baseball by miles! GT enjoyed a BCS football game and ACC TITLE ( I missed what channel UGAY was on playing for any title)….Baseball team swept ugay and the Hoops team finished ahead of UGAY and went to the NCAA tourney. 2 of 3, UGAY SAT AT HOME!!!

Your football team fell short of expectations 2 straight years as you were preseason #13 last year and finished not even in the top 30! You baseball team was in college world series 2 years ago and now one of the worst teams in the SEC! That’s awesome!!! Seems GT has had a much better year redneck, only a joe dirt like you with no brain could try and argue the facts. When you end up ranked behind a team, you can’t say you are better, PLAIN AND SIMPLE! You didn’t finish ahead of GT in any of these 3 sports and even though you won a rival game in 2 of them, you guys sports teams sucked for the most part! You play to earn a postseason bid, and when your at home, you just SUCK! Enjoy mediocrity yet again in 2010 LOSERS!

Big D Dawg, there are two things in life that should never happen:
1. A land war with China
2. A UGA fan chastising another school about arrests in their football program.

PS – “chastising” means “to criticize severely”….or, more simply, “to make fun of”
I hope this leaves you all the wiser. Oh, and congratulations on being 1st for what I assume would be the first time ever this has ever happened.

Big D Dawg, as a Tech fan, I have to admit you are correct. It doesn’t matter to me that UGA players have more difficulty with the law than Tech players. We need to sweep around our own front porch first before we criticize your school. Morgan and Hall are an embarassment to us.
I hope we can do a better job selecting and developing character in these young men in the future. I really don’t care how many scores of dawgs are arrested; Tech needs to take care of its own problems.

I wish we had Allen…

Looks like that “high school” offense (I’m kidding) will be rolling strong without much of, if any, drop off from last year. Y’all have some super studs in the backfield. What is scary to me is the stable of horses ready to come in off the benches. Run, run, reload, run, run.

Should be fun to watch!

Any word on how Chris Jackson is coming along? I remember hearing he was injured during spring practices, but haven’t heard anything since. He could have a big impact at A-back with his ability to catch the football. If we can get the A-backs making more plays in the passing game, we will be very difficult to stop.

Go Jackets

As for wtf and his posse, I monitored the blog about the new hot commit at QB for the dawgs. When his bad news came out. I saw ONE stray comment coming from a “potential” Tech fan. It wasn’t even that bad. You guys are completely classless. Not even the Gator & Bama fans were riding you that bad on it. Grow up. Oh, too late for that.

Those are facts

2 of your outstanding law abiding ballplayers were recently arrested

Ive said for years if Tech wasn’t located in a neighborhood with some of the highest crime statistics in America there would be more arrest made public, but fortunately they go unnoticed due to all the crime around North Ave.

Reality,

No one is denying these arrests, they happen. This however was an article about GT running backs. With regard to your assertion that GT player arrests go unnoticed because of the higher crime rates in the area, do you have any proof? Seems like that is just speculation on your part and again, nothing to do with the topic at hand, GT running backs. Offer proof that GT player arrests go unreported or drop that nonsense from your rhetoric.

Personally I believe that this year will be better than last. Tech’s line is getting bigger, faster and more in-line with the offense that is operated, and there isn’t a school around that wouldn’t love to have half of GT’s running backs. With the improvements on defense the only missing factor is going to be passing. If the passing game improves we could easily be looking at a second ACC Championship and another BCS bowl game.

I will only stoop to your level once. You UGAY fans always love to crow and talk about your recruting classes and how great you are and Richt is the second coming. Now, it is the arrests to two Tech players. While in your neck of the woods, the recruiting classes have not panned out in measurable success, Richt is the best at turning the other cheek just like his mentor Mr. Bowden, you constantly crow about a victory over Hawaii (woo hoo) and you have players and alumni doing time for felony crimes (Marshall, Berrea) while a professor kills his wife in public on the streets.

Do you fans on both sides see how stupid this blog post I just wrote is? Have some fun with the rivalry sure, I catch grief from my Dawg friends and I dish it out as well but stop turning these blogs into massive, disgusting insults that serve no purpose but to show your lack of intelligence and the fact you have nothing left to do while you live in your Mom’s basement.

Chuck Allison, calling D Morgan a disgrace is WAY over the line. He was speeding (which EVERYONE does in Atlanta) and had a suspended license. These are moving violations not serious or violent crimes. Yes, he used bad judgment, but I will never call him a disgrace. He represented Tech admirably while here and will continue to do so in the NFL. Don’t group him with someone arrested for assault and battery. When’s the last time you drove 55mph on 285?

As for the RB situation, I think it will be even better than the last two years. AA was playing out of position at A-back. He’s big and physical, and we all saw his speed on that 80 TD run in the Thursday night win over Clemson. I did see many times where his blocking was poor at the A-back position, which resulted in little or no gain on plays that could have been huge gainers. CPJ is right. We left a lot of yards on the table last year. If the A-backs block well for each other this year, the OL does its job, and with Joshua having some very quick and athletic backups to give him a rest (no offense, but Jaybo was not a D1 QB) we’re going to be just fine! I’m looking for a return to the OB with a victory this time.
