The baseball and basketball meltdowns at the end of the year put a big damper on this season. Both teams had several players that will get drafted next year and look like this was their best chance to win for a while. Some teams peak at the end of the season but Hall’s and Hewitt’s peak at the beginning of the year and watch better coached teams pass them by since they never work on fundamentals.

when will tech fans wake up and acknowledge what the rest of the world already knows – “GOOD” in the ACC doesn’t really cut it against the top tier conferences. Tech football played in the BCS and got beat (after losing to the worst UGA team in years I might add). Tech softball lost at home in the regional. Tech baseball lost at home in the regional. Tech basketball another underachiever, etc., etc. Hey Buzz me – Bite me and get over it.

Lost to UGA in football. Lost to UGA in basketball (men and women). Men’s and women’s tennis? Same. Top-ranked women’s player? Same, to the eventual national champion UGA player. Won’t even get into swimming and diving. But you have baseball…

c.q. “Good” in the ACC was good enough to accomplish something that no other program did. Not even the mighty SEC. Just because you guys play in the SEC does not mean you are SEC elite. All indicators are UGA is trending down in the last few years. 30 years is a long time.

Tech has had a good year, and except for the basketball team has many reasons to believe it will only get better. Considering Tech has a small to medium size student body, it amazes me they are able to have the support they do. I guess if they had 38,000 students you would expect first place in all sports, but hey some rivals mouths are bigger than their brains.

It’s been a very good year for Tech sports but I’m still a little peeved about the last baseball game. I’m not down on Hall but I think he blew that one. We walked in the winning run in that game on 4 straight pitches. That occured after the reliever walked the previous hitter on 4 straight pitches. I don’t fault the reliever for that. Sometimes a pitcher just doesn’t have it on any given day. When a pitcher walks a guy on 4 pitches to load the bases it’s obvious he’s having control problems. To let him continue pitching to the next guy makes no sense. The Bama coach was changing pitchers at the first sign of trouble and he finally found a guy who could stop us. We were supposed to have the better bullpen but we waited until we were losing to really start using it. Hall’s a good coach but he lost that season ending game.

Too Easy

June 9th, 2010
8:26 am

30 Years…: The trend is that UGA beats the bugs 90% of the time. The trend is also for more good teams in the SEC such that it’s tougher to be SEC elite than acc ‘good’. SEC ‘good’ (UGA, USC) beat the acc ‘elite’ (git, CU) last year.

30 years is a long time

June 9th, 2010
8:38 am

Too easy indeed. At this point you guys are closer too Vanderbilt than Florida or Bama, but as long as you guys are still in the SEC, I guess that makes you an elite program even though you have no accomplishments on a national scale recently. Yes it’s tough to be SEC elite, and you guys are constantly losing that battle, I guess that’s why it is so important that you beat ACC teams.

Given the student population differential, the scholastic standards, and the incredible number of non majors (dance, world studies, etc) the dogs should be light years ahead of Tech- yet the are not. The dawgs excel in non student athletes and alumni who are so disrepected at work and at home they feel compelled to make an ass of themselves on Tech blogs.

c.q. – I don’t understand what being in the ACC has ANYTHING to do with not being good. Please, elaborate for me how Irina Falconi and Amanda McDowell winning championships at Georgia Tech (by the way Women’s Tennis won the national championship last year, I don’t know if that means the suck or not because they’re in the ACC) doesn’t mean they’re good. And if you’re gonna put the ACC down, Duke won the national championship in basketball, with Georgia Tech beating Duke this past year. In baseball, the final poll with 6 ACC teams in the top 25 and Tech still posted a 45-13 record. We lost in the regionals, which is disappointing, but it happens. At least we put ourselves in a position to host a regional. Thats nothing to scoff at nor does it NOT make us good at sports. I’m sorry that the University of Georgia is only a mediocre team in SEC with a student body of 35,000 while Georgia Tech is a GOOD team in the ACC with a modest 13,000 students. Hell of an achievement considering the circumstances.

What does it say about UGA fans that they constantly bash the ACC as being weak, and brag about beating ACC teams. Perhaps if you focused on elevating your game to the levels of your SEC brethren (5 out last 10 NC’s) you guys might have an elite SEC team. There’s a reason Willie Martinez kept his job three years longer than he should have. Stop accepting mediocrity. I would love to see Tech back in the SEC, love for a shot at that national respect, and to elevate our program.

How could someone NOT be down on hall? He is a joke in the postseason. And this article is a joke. Especially since its written right after our baseball team has yet another early exit from the postseason. Frank, UGA guys on here always defend themselves by pointing out that Tech fans do the same on their blogs. I’m not saying that there are not Tech fans that make asses of themselves over there, I’m just not one of them. However, I will defend the Jackets against any UGA idiot that needs to come in here and try to make himself feel better about a mediocre program.

It was a pretty good year. We have excelled in alot of sports recently. Its a good time to be a GT fan. I am with some others though in that im still a little disappointed that we couldnt finish off a pretty average Alabama team. I’m a rational GT fan, so I am happy that we have Danny Hall and don’t want him to go anywhere. He has gotten us into the super-regionals, essentially the sweet 16, 5 out of the last 10 years. That is a GREAT record. Sure I’m disappointed about our performance against Bama, but they’ve been hot the second half of this season.

Ho Hum…..another overrated Tech baseball team chokes again. You get the home field and home crowd advantage every year and promptly get eliminated, usually by an SEC team and often by the Bulldawgs. The weakest UGA football team in years comes to your high school-like home stadium and runs all over your ACC champs. Paul Hewitt has a LOSING record against the Dawgs. Your women’s basketball team beats UGA perhaps once every 20-25 years. Your swimming, diving and tennis teams are losers against the Red & Black. However, your baseball team did finally beat the worst UGA team in modern times, but that was a one year fluke. I guess they were in better shape than the Dawgs this spring from having to run from all the muggers, robbers and burglars down in the Tech Golden Ghetto along side the beautiful and scenic exhaust fume-filled I-75/85 “parkway”.

It is funny to me how the gtu fans have replaced scu fans as the most delusional in college football. I must admit that scu has had more success against UGA during the last 19years (with out cheating as per the NCAA) than has gtu. I really don’t hate tech, it goes much deeper than that.

I think it was a very good year. Football was exciting to watch, and I think we beat some outstanding teams. I remember suffering through 2-9, 3-8 seasons, and this is much much better. Hewitt was the only underachiever, but I give him credit for bringing in the talent in the first place. Great to see outperforming non-rev sports too, especially for an engineering school.

If the Jackets can be good most years, great once in a while. I’m OK with that. Face it you are 8 of 10 years a mid packer in the SEC. People outside of Dixie don’t even think UGA is in the same conference with Alabama and Florida. I like coach Richt (a lot), but I think Florida – rebuilding and all has as better chance to be national champions before UGA. Now go wash your Vince Dooley t-shirt, football is just around the corner.

June 9th, 2010

I admit that Tech had a good year. But as several has said it was disappointing as well. Our baseball team cannot advance to the super-regionals mostly due to a coach who does not know the difference between regular season strategy and tourney strategy. Our basketball team pulled it together late in spite of a horrible coach. All of the sports are on the rise but unless we replace our basketball and baseball coaches it will be this way year after year.

To the writer of this blog, The Tech women fell to Duke in the semifinals of the ACC Tournament. Not to be snotty and point that out, I tend to keep up with local teams.

Something for Buzz Me…..

“GT is the only school to play in a BCS game, make it out of the first round of the hoops tourney and be seeded nationally in baseball…something the dawgies will just have to get over. Go Jackets”

“The Gators are one of only two schools nationally this year — the other one being Texas — that can say they played in a BCS bowl game in football, made it to the NCAA Tournament in men’s basketball and advanced to the Super Regionals in baseball.”

NCAA 2nd round vs. NCAA Baseball Super Regionals. You decide but still an accomplishment.

Congrats to Tech’s baseball, w tennis, and volleyball on beating UGA this year.

These numbers exclude championships in FBS/1-A football as the NCAA does not recognize these in their stats for some reason.

Georgia 26 team national titles
Georgia 157 individual national titles.

Georgia Tech 1 team national title (women’s tennis)
Georgia Tech 26 individual national titles

That’s something that you’ll just have to get over.

Have a good day, Bud.

Let’s see:

Tech gets steamrolled in its first BCS football game ever.

The baseball team craps out losing in the final game of the regional for the third year in a row.

The underachieving basketball team manages to make it to the first game of the second round of the NCAA before floundering again.

Both the football team and the basketball team lose to UGA.

And in Tech’s mind its a “pretty good year.” Hey Tech: buzz off.

I have to agree that the baseball team is an annual disappointment. When you are ranked consistently in the Top 10, you need to do better than lose in the Regionals.. especially at home. It happens year after year and it gets old. (Although the record breaking win over ugag out on the farm was nice.. funny that the mutts don’t mention that this year)

Luke, I’m sorry — I usually only look at the Tech blog for a good laugh — but you have got to be kidding me. You’re bragging about Tech’s only NCAA team national championship in its entire history? UGA usually picks up that many once a year. For a school of Tech’s size, playing for as long as they have at the Div I level — they have the worst NCAA team championship record in the entire country — look it up. I’m embarassed for you.

AFDawg

June 9th, 2010
6:43 pm

TexasJacket, I sympathize with you — Tech is a Div I baseball powerhouse (recruiting all that metro Atlanta talent year after year) and they still haven’t won the CWS. That has got to hurt, especially when you consider UGA has won it all (first SEC team to do it) and almost did it again two years ago. Then, to add salt to the wound — the ACC powerhouse baseball conference has won only one CWS in its history, and that was over 50 years ago. That’s enough to make you want to pull for another team.
