Paul Johnson on the ACC and its image

The ACC has been viewed as one of the weak sisters in the BCS for the past few years because it has yet to place more than one team in any of the five games in one year. Nor has it had a team in the national championship game.

Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson said on Tuesday at the Pigskin Preview in Macon that there are two ways the league can improve its image:

1. The media can recognize that while the league may not have had a top-rated team, it has had depth. He points to the fact that five teams will likely be in the various preseason top 25 polls: Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, Miami, North Carolina, and FSU, with Clemson perhaps breaking in. That’s more than any other conference will have.

“We’ve had good depth in the league but no marquee teams,” he said. “Some leagues have had marquee teams but no depth.”

He wouldn’t say which leagues those were, but USC in the Pac-10, Texas and Oklahoma in the Big 12 come to mind.

There is other evidence, including the fact that 31 players were selected in the NFL draft in April. It was third among the conferences.

2. “Eventually we’ve got to get a team in the national championship game,” he said. This could be the year for that. The ACC’s Coastal Division could be the toughest of any in any conference. The Yellow Jackets, Hurricanes, Tar Heels and the Hokies will be in the top 25. Tech has to play two of those teams — Virginia Tech and North Carolina — on the road. Flipping to the Atlantic, Tech has to go to Clemson as well. If it can run the table, it should have enough BCS points accumulated to make it to the title game.

We need UNC to beat LSU this year and VT to blow out Boise to put the ACC in it’s rightful place.

I’m not sure about the UNC hype. Their great defense didn’t show in a few games last year. LSU is just as much a mystery with erratic play (or coaching.)

VT: Tyrod Taylor and 2 great RBs. According to Phil Steele, Boise State has 55 of 60 lettermen returning in 2010, 91.7%. VaTech has 63.9% returning, ranked #101. For comparison, Arkansas is #2, with 59 of 71 returning, 83.1%. South Carolina is 3rd with 54 of 65, 83.1%.

If Miami or FSU should win them them all, they surely ought go to the BCS Championship game. The ‘Noles have an insane OOC schedule, with Oklahoma, BYU and Florida. The ‘Canes have Ohio St., Pitt and South Florida.

The Chick-Fil-A kickoff can go a long way in restoring the ACC’s credibility. Unlike most matchups against the SEC that the ACC has won, this won is relatively evenly matched. Both UNC and LSU are talented by sporadic.

The VaTech/Boise game is no-win are the ACC. If VaTech wins, everyone will say that Boise was overrated. If Boise wins, the ACC will lose more credibility.

Va Tech, UNC, Clemson, Miami, and FSU (and Wake to a lesser extent) all have opportunities early in the season for signature wins versus marquee opponents. Winning those types of games is how you improve your rep.

Depth? The a she she has depth…If you equate a bunch of mediocre teams within the same conference who are pretty evenly matched…then call it depth if you wish!

Let’s see what the final polls say about your weak arse conference…the conference that has a 2-10 record…by far the worst…in BCS bowls!

Also want to find a much smaller venue for the acc…lip stick on a hog chumpionship game…you MAY finally sell it out!

The acc is a joke!

So its just the media Coach Manboobs? The ACC champ losing to 6-5 Georgia has nothing to do with it? Going 0-fer in bowl games has nothing to do with it? Roberson, did you ask Manboobs about this? Doubt it. Hard to ask questions with your lips stuck firmly to his backside.

Thanks.

Georgia refuses to play on Thursday night. I actually think it’s good for Tech and some National Exposure. Not that folks don’t know Tech, they do, but to promote their football brand.

A key factor here is that if UNC’s offense improves this year, and it should (4th-yr starter QB and highly-touted backup Bryn Renner; highly rated receiver corps who now have game experience; healthy offensive line; 3 good backs, assuming 4star back out of Fl is good as billed), then the Heels could be a factor nationally. Their defense projects as 2d-to-none. Think about it before you reflect your bias.

According to orangebloods.com Nebraska has already decided to bolt for the Big 10 and will make a formal announcement on Friday. After all the chaos that is about to happen we will see if the ACC even has an image to improve.

JB – I think it is laudable that UGA refuses to play on Thursday nights, but if the World Wide Leader in Sports wants any of their “SEC partners” to play on Thursday they will. They already tell UGA (and everyone else for that matter) what time they are going to kick off.

CatsFly – I think UNC are going to be good this year. The one thing GT has going for them is that they play UNC early, before Renner has established himself after Davis gives up on Yates.

The past 4 years the ACC has been pathetic , 2009 being the bottom. The question should be does the ACC get to keep a BCS bid if it continues on this downward spiral.

I don’t think former conference Champion Wake Forest is getting it’s just due. Those Deacons won the most exciting conference championship game to date.

Then played Louisville toe -to-toe in the Orange Bowl. They can’t be dismissed as an ACC powerhouse. They’re for real.

Tech, the ACC champion, beat the two worst teams in the SEC (Vandy and Miss St) and lost to the 6th place team in the SEC. You should be happy that no one remembers that.

CatsFly – I’m not buying any hype. Maybe the UNC defense will play to expectations this year. That should have been the case last year also. I’d say Tyler Yates has been a disappointment. He’s a local kid, as is Hutson Mason. Pope wasn’t as successful as Lassiter in their respective years at those schools.
