Georgia Tech does well in APR — updated with ACC’s excellence

Georgia Tech’s football and men’s basketball teams posted the biggest improvements in APR scores in information released on Wednesday.

The APR, or Academic Progress Report, measures the eligibility, retention and graduation of athletes on every Division I team in all sports. It is designed to serve as a predictor of future graduation success. The APR scores released are four-year rates based on the 2005-06, 2006-07, 2007-08 and 2008-09 academic years.

The football team’s score increased for the third consecutive year, reaching 993, the fourth-highest score nationally and tops in the conference, according to the ACC. The team’s  multi-year average of 967 is tied for the third-best score among ACC teams, behind Duke and Miami.

The ACC led all conferences for the fourth straight year in APR (962.4 avg.). Seven ACC schools were ranked in the Top 32 including Clemson (tied for 11th with Vanderbilt, 982). Additionally, Duke (19th, 976), Wake Forest (23rd, 974), Virginia (28th, 972), Boston College (971, 30th) and Miami (32nd, 969) were ranked in the Top 32.

Using the four-year APR numbers, the ACC still finished first for the fourth straight year (955.5) with Duke ranked 5th (983) nationally and Miami 6th (978). Tech ranks behind Georgia (973) in football, but not far, as they are tied with Boston College and Clemson for 23rd place despite a coaching change which always hurts your retention factor in the APR. Using the four-year numbers 7 ACC schools are ranked in the Top 34 including Wake Forest (28th, 966) and North Carolina (947, 34th)

The men’s basketball team’s score was 953, an improvement of 113 points from last year, when it was penalized with the loss of two scholarships. That penalty was served during the 2008-09 season. Its multi-year average of 908 is last among ACC schools. Because it didn’t have a player who left school and was ineligible, the team wasn’t penalized.

“To see our overall scores improve for a third straight year is very encouraging,” Georgia Tech athletic director Dan Radakovich said in a statment. “It’s a tribute to our student-athletes, coaches and staff.

“At the same time, we will continue to strive to raise our numbers each and every year.”

Four teams – golf, volleyball and men’s and women’s cross-country – had perfect scores of 1,000. Baseball (989) was also recognized for ranking in the top 10 percent of its sport nationally.

No Tech team was penalized.

Here are Tech’s scores for the past three years:

Earth to Techie morons: Attracting non-alumni support for the athletic programs is a goal of almost any major D-1 program. It is certainly a goal of yours. Why else would you have offered free hot dog and coke promotions to fill the stands? Why else would you run ads in the AJC every single summer about tickets for the upcoming football season? Do you idiots think that Big Boi halftime concert a couple of years ago was for your dorky asses? Of course not. Big Boi has probably never seen so many dorks in one place in his life as he did that night. He was there to get the average sidewalk Atlanta sports fan in to the stadium.

Tech fans kill me with this “you didn’t even go to school at UGA” non-sense. So what if the average Georgia redneck cheers for us over you? Can you blame them? Meanwhile, the UGA athletic association is laughing all the way to the bank. Your piss ant athletic department would slap its own mother to get the kind of NON-ALUMNI support that UGA does.

Yeah, that management degree must be real tough. You will never see anyone more painfully clueless about the business of college sports than Tech fans. They think this is like pee wee league or something where you get points for just showing up. Good grief.

When everything shakes out in conference re-aligments, Tech could one of the teams left out in the cold. The football played in the Southern Conference is very good, and ya’ll will fit right in.

You do know that there are not 92,000 UGA fans sitting in the stadium right? I would venture a guess that 1/3 of those are fans of the opposing team say Gatot fans to watch the puppies get beat once again. The only reason your not so great SEC team fills it’s stadium is because you play teams with good fanbases and GT unfortunately does not. Does this suck for GT money wise yes, do I have to sit next to Wilbur and Cletis who can’t even name a player besides the QB no.

Reality Stinks, please let me be the first to inform you that YOU ARE A MORON. Don’t talk about things you don’t know, saying GA Tech is an inferior schools to those in the top tier.

Tech is the 5th ranked engineering school in the country, behind MIT, Stanford, UC Berkeley, and Cal Tech, and 12th in the world. I’d say that’s damn good company to be in.

Tech has the #1 ranked Industrial Engineering program in the world.

Tech is the #7 ranked public school overall in the country, behind UC-Berkeley, UCLA, UVA, Michigan, UNC-Chapel Hill, and William and Mary. This one where UGA actually does qualify for rankings, and they come in at a healthy #21. Tech, at #7, is the third best public institution in the ACC (that not even counting places like Duke), whereas Georgia comes in at second in the SEC, behind Florida (as well as Maryland from the ACC), which BTDubs, is behind all of the aforementioned ACC schools.

Don’t talk about Tech not being legit. You have no idea what you talk about.

Lol. Who cares about a couple hundred athletes and how their grades are? They obviously should and their parents should. We don’t. Georgia Tech is considered a great academic school because of the other 18,000 students here. The ones that actually have the super high SAT scores and come to Tech for the academics.

Hey all you blind puppy dawg fans. Comparing Tech APR football scores to UGA’s is like comparing the complexity of a Engineer’s job to a Wal-Mart Cashier. Check out the degrees your players strive to score at – Recreational Science or Housing! Give me a break!
