Johnson excited for Skole’s opportunity with Rangers

Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson said he would be surprised if signee Jake Skole doesn’t go and play professional baseball.

Skole was selected by the Texas Rangers in the first round of Monday’s baseball draft. He had signed to play football for the Jackets, and was also going to play baseball. His brother, Matt, is Tech’s third baseman.

Johnson said he talked to Jake late Monday.

“I’m excited for Jake and his family,” Johnson said on Monday at the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in Macon. “Whatever happens, I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t go play baseball. He’d have to turn down a lot of money.

“If it doesn’t work out, we’d love to have him at Georgia Tech. I can’t imagine being 18 years old and having that opportunity. It’s going to be exicting.”

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported that Skole was going to try and sign with the Rangers, who selected him 15th overall.

“I always felt like I’d end up being a baseball player,” Skole told the paper’s website. “I was about to [play football] and then all this draft stuff started popping up. I figured I might be able to have a future in this.”

Borrowing from colleague Michael Carvell’s blog:

Skole’s baseball fortunes seemed bleak when he missed most of the regular season with a high-ankle sprain. However, Skole returned to Blessed Trinity’s team in time for the playoffs to put on a show for the MLB scouts.  In 14 playoff games, Skole hit .452 with six home runs and 21 RBIs. In the Class AA semifinals against Georgia’s No. 1 pitching prospect, Cook’s Kaleb Cowart (97 mph, drafted No. 18 by the LA Angels), Skole was retired on a called third strike to lead off the game. He responded with a pair of line-drive hits in his next two plate appearances against Cowart.

He would have been a welcome addition to Tech athletics but when you’re 18 and you have a multimillion dollar contract in front of you, you’d be stupid not to bolt.

Tech’s all about traditions. Take for example the baseball tradition of not being able to get past a regional.

Tech was pistol whipped by SEC’s BAMA and gets NO TRIP to the CMS ………..again.

That big 44-0 ?? v UGA in baseball got you nothing, nada, zilch. No AC titles, no nothing.

How many times has UGA been to the CWS in the last 15 years and how many NCs in baseball has UGA won? 1 at least. Tech? NONE …………humiliated at HOME by another SEC team and this fact is why Tech will never, ever get back in the club.

Best of luck to Jake. He would be a fool to choose college football over professional baseball and all the money. Actually, just about anybody would be a fool to choose football over baseball. Clemson will find that out soon.

Congrats to Mr. Skole!

The Tech football program will move on. The only loss that would ever cripple us would be THE MAN Paul Johnson.

If there's no Georgia Tech football to talk about...

Why is no one talking about the HUMILIATING DEFEAT at tehc in baseball and at the hands of Alabama, of SEC fame?

One question? How many trips to the CWS has Tech made?? How many ……….hmm??? Not one trip to Omaha has tech made. Therefore, the average college baseball fan can conclude that tech is not a baseball school, given that humiliating truth.

Doug,

Just nitpicking, but …
PJ was at the Sports Hall of Fame on Tuesday (can’t be there Monday and have discussed his conversation with the Skole family on draft night Monday night).
And grammar police time — it’s try to sign, not try and sign. You wouldn’t say attempt and sign, would you?

SEC Rules,

No one is talking about because any Tech fan with 1/2 a brain isn’t surprised Bama handed it to Tech. Same song different verse. We’re used to it. Nice bait attempt though but like a fat man holding a Twinkie you’re attempt at trash talk regarding an event we all foresaw isn’t going to get a rise out of anybody.
