1990 celebration

Some of you were justifiably aggravated when Colorado announced it was going to celebrate its “consensus” national championship football team the weekend of its game against Georgia.
That’s fine, except Georgia Tech was also crowned champions for that season.
On Monday, Tech will announce plans to honor its team, with most of the shindig happening during the weekend of the Miami game.
I’ll send more as I get more. Follow me on twitter @ajcgatech

I have an idea. Get the two teams together now and play a game. The winner can celebrate all they want.

Colorado fans know they didn’t really win that title. There are only 4 downs in a football game and they needed 5 to win. One of the worst officiating mistakes in the history of college football…and it cost GT a consensus national title.

I like your thinking, Clint! Of course, one program is restoring to the glory days and the other program is on its way to firing its coach as soon as it can afford to. As long as Tech is in the former category, I’m all for it, however.

Doug Roberson, what is going on with this grammar?? I’m usually not a stickler for grammar, but this is just horrible.

Seriously. I’m not a stickler for it either, but come on! Write much? I don’t even know where to start. It’s so tempting to make a dig about that great Tech education, but I guess their known for engineering, not simple grammar.

THE ONLY POLL WHO RECOGNIZED GT IS NO LONGER IN EXISTENCE. I MEAN YOU BEAT A NEBRASKA TEAM BARELY IN THE TOP 25 IN SOME MID MAJOR EARLY MORNING NEW YEARS GAME AND YOU CALL THAT A CHAMPIONSHIP.
I THINK NOT.

We (GT) were undefeated that year. Colorado had 1 loss and another win in which they were give 5 downs to win the game! How rude. What really did us in that year is that we were not in any preseason polls and Colorado was. It took us, I think, 7 weeks or so into the season to just creep up to the Top 10. Had we had a preseason ranking, we would have been at the top of both polls.

Oh…..PS: THWG !!!!

PSS: Nebraska was #17 and we beat them by over 20 points! I think we did the same to UGA that year. Back then, there was no BCS. IF that were today, we would have been playing a Top 5 team and would have beaten them by 20 points too!

Ed, it was the coaches’ poll that voted Tech #1. If by no longer in existence you mean the poll that actually counts toward the BCS standings (along with the Harris but not the AP), then you’d be correct.

I always find it amusing how the flea-bags can come on here and dispute the 1990 National Championship. It will continue to haunt them for the next 100 years that GT has won a NC in the last 20 years and it has been 30 years since their ONLY NC—–and that was thanks to Tech and how we handled Notre Dame.

Hey ed, that poll is now the coaches poll. And anybody with any sense knows that Tech was the true national title winner in 1990. The only undefeated team was Tech and they didnt need a 5th down to get there.

Ed—you will die an old old old man—-and you will still be without another NC. I have lived all over the US and nobody thinks any more of the UGA-LY program than Tennessee, Auburn and many other one-and-dones.

You live a sad life……..

I live and Maui with a perfect ocean view from 3 sides of my home thanks to my great education from GT.

MisterT——I second that motion.

I tell all folks the story about someone I know that told me they were not born in Georgia but since they moved to Georgia “they had grown to be fans of both schools”.

I told them “no thanks—-you are a dawg fan only—can’t be both—can’t happen—-EVER”—-but thanks for the thought!!

THWG—-I always hope they lose every game by 50 points and they finally shut the place down, let the cheerleaders go graze in the countryside of Athens and fill-in that kudzu-cesspool.

Also, I find it funny that they are lowering the prices to their games—-is free hotdogs on the way to Athens—certainly not a NC. HAHAHA

Mister T, I disagree. What if by UGA winning it ups our strength of schedule and enables us to be ranked higher after a win? I want UGA to beat all non-ACC teams every year. Though, I know full well that they won’t be beating Florida any time soon and Auburn is starting to look tougher and tougher.

Burdell, I’m glad you remember the phantom clipping that was ten yards behind Rocket Ismail. I don’t care if you’ve got Michael Johnson or Usain Bolt. No one, I say NO ONE could catch Rocket with a 2 yard head start, much less a linebacker ten yards behind the play.

Doug, can you find out what’s up with Tech not being ranked in Athlon’s spring top 25? Most polls have us at 17 or better and Phil Steele has us at 11, saying that we could crack the top 10 with a solid August on defense.

Tom Osborne said the toughest team he played that year was GT. Yes, they played CU.

CU also had a loss on top of the 5 down bs. And if you goggle rocket ismail colorado, you will see a phamtom clipping call for CU that gave them the win over CU. So really CU should have 3 losses that season yet they claim a Nat champ. What a joke.

I find it funny, actually, that Colorado would want to promote this – because it will only bring back the 5-down win game they got that year. The media will replay it over and over and show the 5 separate pictures like they did when it happened. If you think about it, the fact that Colorado is doing this will make GT look even better!

I’m going to do the odd thing for a UGA fan and break blog tradition and ask a serious question without bashing Tech:

Was there another major poll that year other than AP and UPI? As in, I assume if Colorado was “consensus” champs, they mean that a majority of polls picked them. I just thought that year was a “split” championship evenly between Tech and CU. Can someone inform me?

jacketlover – UGA isn’t lowering prices. Just donation levels were lower this year. Same ticket prices, same sellouts. 10 years of sellouts in a row now, I believe.

The 1990 NCAA Division I-A football season ended with a split championship and the ensuing controversy led to the creation of the Bowl Coalition, a precursor to the Bowl Championship Series. The title was split between the Colorado Buffaloes and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. The Buffaloes took the AP poll while the Yellow Jackets took the UPI poll by one vote over Colorado, 847 to 846.

@GTGRAD, I believe what @jacketlover4ever means is, had Tech not tied Notre Dame (allowing UoG to leapfrog them in the polls from 3rd to 1st), UoG would not have even played for the title in 1980.

Bryan G.

Touche, Dale. However, there are also UGA fans who say Tech had a “fake” NC in 1990 but want to claim 1942 (consensus, but didn’t win AP poll) for the Dawgs. Can’t have it both ways, I would say.

The Dude—–You are exactly right —only the young, uneducated or uninformed would not know that story. A tie or a loss by ND with GT was the ONLY way the mutts leaped over ND to play for the NC—otherwise ND plays for the NC and bulldogs would have been 3rd or 4th.
