Friday’s starters set

Mark Pope will take on Mercer’s Brandon Love at 7 p.m. Friday in Tech’s regional opener.

Tech coach Danny Hall said on Monday that he was considering holding in reserve Deck McGuire (8-3), who is normally his team’s Friday starter.

The question becomes how long will Hall hold McGuire?

Should Tech win, and Elon upset Alabama, will he rest him until Sunday and send him out for what could be a clinching game?

Perhaps we will find out at Thursday’s press conferences.

Until then, here’s how Pope and Love compare:

……………Pope          Love

Record       7-1               8-3

ERA             4.26            6.19

IP                 69 2/3       68 1/3

H                   85               87

R                   37               52

ER                33                47

BB                 11                27

K                   63                62

Alabama should win this regional because GT always plays tight at the end of the season. Elon will play tough against Bama but the Tide will prevail because they will play with confidence. Bama will beat GT in the finals to go to the super regional. Good move by Danny Hall to start Mark Pope against Mercer because Pope is pitching well. Deck McGuire should be saved for Bama.

I would save Deck as well, we’ve already beaten Mercer twice, we should be able to beat them a 3rd time. Save your “ace” for the tougher opponents (Bama).

I was worried for a minute that Danny Hall was going to run Deck out there Friday night against the Bears. Glad I was wrong!

For an aspiring youngster out there, the lesson of that line is “Don’t walk batters”… and be sure to pitch for a team that can support you with 8-20 runs. Other than that the pitchers look fairly equal on paper.

For our batters the lesson is “Don’t take anything for granted, and work the pitcher with every at bat”.

Tech has the better team, but in one game, anything can happen. I have seen this Love kid pitch a couple times this year, and he is the real deal. If Mercer swings the bats well, this could be an exciting baseball game. Go Bears!

I’ve been a Tech fan my whole life, so it pains me to say this. Alabama will win this regional. They will be riding, what should be, a wave of confidence coming off their championship game showing againt powerhouse, LSU. I agree with L.E. Jay, we always seem to find a way to lose in either the regionals or super regionals. Danny Hall has become the Bobby Cox of college baseball. We dominate in the regular season and are a top 10 team year-in and year-out. But we never seem to produce come tournament time. This Tech team is probably his best in recent memory and thats saying alot. It seems like for the first time, we have some good pitching to go along with, the always, potent bats.

Good move coach. We can make Omaha if we just play Jacket baseball. Thanks Duluth Dawg for the good wishes. You are a nice exception and hopefully the rule for Dawg bloggers

GT should run through this Regional easy to be honest. For all of you talking about Alabama winning this one, you obviously have not seen the teams play. To say they went to the Championship and lost to a powerful LSU team come on LSU is no where close to a powerhouse this year. Should be a good Regional but by no means should GT lose any game in this Regional at all.

Is Love right-handed or left-handed?

Love is left handed. We should be OK though…I like the move of starting Pope. Save the big guns for later in the series!

This is the first step for the Jackets on their way to Omaha! Tech has better pitching than anyone in their regional and better hitting than anyone in their regional. Danny Hall and Jackets are going to get it done this year!

I hate to say it, but I also fear the return of the post-season curse for the Jackets. Is there some famous mobster burried under Russ Chandler?

Wish I could go. I’ve got a great “BEAT MERCER” shirt I got for KSU basketball. I’ll wear it to work just for the heck of it.

It’s hard to beat a team three times in one year… this is Mercer’s first time at the show and will ride the high emotions for a win!!!

Georgia was beaten by a certain team three times in one year….

This isn’t football. “Riding high emotions (Mercer)” doesn’t mean a thing. Baseball doesn’t care about who is “fired-up”. I, too, fully expect to lose in the regionals. We never get out of the regionals or super regionals. Perhaps Delta can fly the team to Omaha for free as it is the only way we’ll see it.
