Before the season, sitting in a press conference, baseball coach Danny Hall said he thought this was the deepest team he’s had in quite a while. That it was one that was capable of making it to the College World Series in Omaha.
After an impressive regular season in which they went 44-11 and are on the verge of setting school records for home runs in a season, the Jackets begin ACC tournament play tonight against a tough Virginia Tech team. The team can pitch (3.82 ERA), hit (.329), hit for power (111, 8 off the school record) and situations (477 RBI). The team hasn’t blown a save (12-for-12), also important in tournament play.
Tech won the tourney in 1985, ‘86, ‘87, ‘88, 2000, ‘03 and ‘05.
Before they left for the tournament, Hall spent a lot of time talking to reporters about various things.
Here is some of what the said.
About Virginia Tech:
“We’ve got our hands full with Virginia Tech. They have series wins over Georgia Tech, Miami and FSU. They can play with anybody.”
—
About N.C. State, which Tech will play on Friday:
“N.C. State won two out of three from us. We don’t have a lot of answers for them offensively.”
—
On the regionals:
“If we go to ACCs and play well we know we have a chance to be a top seed. We have to earn it, they don’t give it to you.”
—
On Thursday’s starter Deck McGuire, who is 8-3, with a 2.84 ERA:
“Wouldn’t want to start with anyone but Deck McGuire.”
—
On the possibility of playing four consecutive days:
“We’ve got more pitching than we’ve had on the other teams.”
—–
Probable starters:
Thursday, 8 p.m.
Georgia Tech – Deck McGuire, Jr., RHP (8-3, 2.84 ERA, 105 K’s) vs
Virginia Tech – Justin Wright, Jr., LHP (7-4, 3.76 ERA, 80 K’s)
2010 Series: VT won 2-1 (3-1 (11), 10-3, 12-14)

Who are you kidding. Tech getting to the CWS is like the Hawks getting out of the 2nd round of the playoffs. Congrats on finally beating the Dawgs at something, but who cares about baseball. I don’t think any UGA fans will be holding their heads in shame after what happened at the Joke by Coke in late November(or the other 14 buttwhippings out of the last 15, excluding the 3 games where you won by cheating).

Looks like Tech won’t start until at least 9:30 tonight. Game 1 between BC and Miami took 4:35, and the ACC mandates 45 minutes between games.
