Georgia Tech announced on Wednesday that 65 members of its athletics department, including 54 athletes, graduated from the Institute earlier this month. Thirty-four percent of them graduated with honors.

As some have already noted, Tech’s business school has a better national ranking than UGA’s does.
The MGT degree at Tech is very operations and technology driven. Its not retail, sales, or hospitality oriented at all.

RHODES SCHOLORSHIP COMMITTEE
May 20th, 2010
7:48 pm
The RHODES SCHOLORSHIP is one of the (if not the) most prestigious scholarships awarded in America.
Only 3 schools from the ACC have more students who have been awarded this scholarship than the UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA.(16) They are Virginia, Duke and North Carolina.
Every school in the SEC has more winners of the RHODES SCHOLARSHIP than Georgia Tech (3), except Mississippi State (1) and Auburn (3).
All schools from the SEC have had at least one student win a RHODES SCHOLARSHIP, while the ACC has two schools that have never produced a RHODES SCHOLAR (Clemson and NC State)
Georgia Tech fans and students like to brag about how good their school is, #5 Engineering School?
#1 Stanford (82)
#2 MIT (36)
#3 University of Cal- Berkley (22)
#4 Cal Tech (6)
#5 Georgia Tech (3)
It is interesting to see what a huge drop-off there is between the #3 best engineering school and the #5. Why can’t Georgia Tech produce more RHODES SCHOLORS?, MIT has 36! GT only a pitiful 3!

To the Muttlanders in attendance, we all want to win THE BIG GAME! We have always wanted to win it, it’s just this last time, your ilk finally admitted it was just as important to you. Props to you. You have scoreboard. However, it’s much more important to win in life and a degree from Tech gives you a competitive advantage. Therein lies the difference between the two fan bases. If the Muttlanders win, they have nothing else on thier shingle.

To earn a degree from GT is quite an accomplishment. My two best friends from HS, at least a quarter of my graduating HS class, and my Dad (UG and Masters) went to Tech. I will attest my two friends had to study way, waaaay harder than I did in the mid 80s. I’m sure UGA is a lot tougher today than when I attended, but I’m very sure Tech is still much more difficult than UGA.
It takes a lot of discipline to do what these scholar athletes have achieved. Good luck to them, and I’m sure they will be successful. A Tech degree does carry some weight!
See y’all ‘tween the hedges in November.

Ugh, the Rhodes Scholarship is a liberal arts award. Stanford and UC Berkley are not engineering only like GT and CalTech, and MIT also has a sizable liberal arts program.
UGA is a massive liberal arts school roughly 20 times the size of GT’s Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts. Realistically, if the two schools were similar in academics, UGA should have close to 60 Rhodes scholars, since GT has three.

I am a UGA grad with a business school degree that went to GA Tech my first year and majored in Management. The core courses were very much the same except the science classes at Tech were harder. I was a student/athlete at GA Tech my first year and that was tough. Both schools are great in their respective fields, Engineering and Liberal Arts.
Congrats to the GA Tech student/athletes for earning their degree from a great school. Any college athlete that graduates in 4-5 years should be very proud, especially from a great academic school as Tech.
In this day and age, a student/athlete that actually graduates should be commended since a majority of them only care about athletics.
Congrats to Recardo Wimbush for coming back and graduating. His parents must be proud.
On another note. I wish for just one day that BOTH UGA and GA Tech fans wouldn’t go on the others blogs and bash each other when something good happens for another school. BOTH sets of fans are guilty. It is not even football season yet. Let everyone enjoy the good times that the players are having.
CONGRATS GA Tech student/athlete graduates!! You now have something that can never be taken away from you.

I see you Techtards are at it again, trying to live vicariously through the student athletes at Yech, “Ohh lookie, our athletes are superior to your UGA athletes because they graduate from Tech.”
What a bunch of crap. For the majority of the football players, do you morons really think they would have qualified to the school unless they were athletes first?? Like someone earlier already posted, ebonics is the first language for these “student” athletes.
Like any of you really care anyway. Unless you are a friend of, or related to any of the above mentioned athletes, the only reason you NERDS even bring this up is to act like youre above everyone else.
Your athletes are no smarter than any other fan base’s, on the average. Now on the playing field, your teams SUCK. It’s all good though. That’s what most of you nerds enjoy doing the most anyway, sucking!

Georgia Tech had only 4 seniors on the 3-deep roster last year:
Sedrick Griffin – Starting LB – is on the list in this blog
Brad Sellers – Starting OT – is completing his BSCE
Cord Howard – Starting OG – is in the NFL
Dan Voss – 2nd team C – is still in school
3 players on the 3-deep for 2010 have already graduated-listed above:
Robert Hall – Starting DE (injured in Game 3, 2009)
Zack Krish – 2nd team OL in 2009
Osahon Tongo – 2nd team DE in 2009

Don’t sit there and act like youre football royalty. My Coogs will be ranked higher at the end of the season than your team will, trust me.
Our defense isn’t so great, but yours is worse. If the teams played, we would win something like 49 – 38. Of course Tech would never play a team like UH. Too scared. People love to run down the non BCS teams, of course it strikes me odd that the big boys will never schedule them.
At least I give credit to teams like Okie St, UCLA, Texas Tech, oh and Missy St.-whom both of our teams beat last year by a TD.

How long has our streak of better education in the state been going on? Or starting salary?
Did you know that the average Mississippi State degree outpays U(sic)GA in starting salary? In terms of population they must be somewhere around 35-40th in the nation and still out perform U(sic)GA the “flagship” school of the 8th largest state.

UGAy is a joke. Of all of my friends whom have graduated UGAy, they are struggling to earn jobs or earning less than 40k a year in dead end jobs. No wonder they dwell in trailers. However, my fellow GT alumni are enjoying salaries between 50-90k a year with their fulltime jobs with ample room to grow. Numbers don’t lie and as a result, this truth must hurt UGAy retards. Nonetheless, this is not about us, but more towards the congratulations of people whom have managed their time wisely as an athlete and attaining a superior education.

The AJC (Chip Towers)posted a similar article for UGA grads by sport or “athletes” on 5/7, and there were no cheerleaders, dancers, managers or trainers listed. The point is that these categories are not considered sports, and if they are, who won the national championship in each of them this year. Its not to take anything away from them earning a degree at Tech, but more an AJC reporting inconsistency issue. Conversely, if Tech’s support groups for athletes deserve regognition for graduating, then so should UGA’s…

Good lord Ramble On and Delbert,
You two are a couple of damn nerds I swear. Who cares what university ranks where or about the past.

But I don’t, because this is a SPORTS blog and nobody really gives a rats arse about education on a SPORTS blog.
Congrats Tech athletes on your degrees. Unfortantely you’ve spent the past four years of your life playing in front of sparse crowds who don’t really appreciate what you do. Instead they love to brag of your “academic prowess” to put others down, validating their own pathetic existence.

Hey, this is a blog about athletes’ graduation. I posted when Georgia announced their graduating athletes, too. The person posting as “Jimmy” brought up the other football stuff. Nothing he posted provided any insight or substantial observations, other than how happy he is with his job, and that he feels inferior for some reason.
The guy who posed as a Colorado fan; well, he pointed out that Colorado had been voted a National Poll Championship in 1990 by the AP, and I pointed out that the UPI (Coaches’ Poll) voted their National Poll Champions as Georgia Tech.
The person who poster as “superDawg” had a concern as to what the BSMgt degree entailed. I gave him the answer.
Also, the guy who asked, ““Did any of the football players who played graduate? Thought so!! HA !!”” wanted information, so I looked it up and provided it.
I do a lot of research for such replies. If you don’t want to know the answer, don’t ask the question.

To sum it up….UH has twice the enrollment as GT with half the football attendance. Roughly 33K students and about 25K football game attendance, you did have your best year in decades last year though, about 40K. Nice appreciation for UH football. BHAAWHWHWHWHAHAHAHAA.

Engineer at Oxford

The Department of Engineering Science at Oxford is the only unified department in the UK which offers accredited courses in all the major branches of engineering – our students develop a broad view of the subject much appreciated by employers, but can also choose from a very wide range of specialist options.
Every year the Department of Engineering Science, one of the largest departments in the University, produces around 160 new engineering graduates. They go off to a huge variety of occupations – into designing cars, building roads and bridges, developing new electronic devices, manufacturing pharmaceuticals, into healthcare and aerospace, into further study for higher degrees and in many other directions. Some of our graduates also develop their managerial, financial or entrepreneurial skills, and go into commerce, financial services, or start their own companies.
We see 60 to 70 students each year take higher degrees, either MSc or DPhil by research, and since October 2006 a number take a taught MSc course in Biomedical Engineering.
We have a substantial research portfolio, including much that is directly supported by industry. In the Department there are no barriers between the different branches of engineering, and we are involved in a great deal of multi-disciplinary research collaborating with groups in other departments from Archaeology to Zoology.
This broad view of engineering, based on a scientific approach to the fundamentals, is part of the tradition that started with our foundation in 1908 – one hundred years of educating great engineers, and researching at the cutting edge!
Georgia Tech students have only been granted 3 of these scholarship, while UGA students have been grant 16.

Engineer at Oxford – You cut and pasted all but your last paragraph from Oxford’s Department of Engineering Science web site. Those direct quotes should be in quotation marks, and attributed to the source.
According to The University of Georgia’s web site, 21 Georgia graduates have been named Rhodes Scholars; 15 from 1904 – 1973. 6 have been named 1996 -2008. Some were in the sciences, particularly biology, but the majority were in Law, economics or the liberal arts.
None were in engineering. However, Eugene Booth, Rhodes Scholar in 1934 is very famous for his work at Columbia University and his role in the Manhattan Project as a physicist. The book, “The Making of the Atomic Bomb,” for which Richard Rhodes won the Pulitzer Prize, includes Booth’s accomplishments in some detail. It’s a great book, over a thousand pages including bibliography and attributions. I highly recommend it to everyone.

One in civil engineer and the other an agricultural engineer
What a tough institute
Just as I thought the Tech football gives diplomas just like everyone else
Where are the real engineers you know Electrical, Nuclear, Structural, Mechanical, Aerospace, Computer etc
If Tech was a premier academic program why are most of its athletes in Business and not ENGINEERING
Oh whats funny out of the 16 football graduates 12 got a business management degree thats funny not engineering. I guess the business school is where they give diplomas at Tech

DelbertD,
I think the Rhodes Schoarship Commitee was just pointing out that the ACC did not seem to that much stronger accademiclly than the SEC, and that GT when compared to other schools did not produce much with all that talent..It seems that most of the Tech fans want to talk about accademics instead of results on the football field.
I think that most people who choose not to study math, just think math is boring and that unless you want to be an engineer or math teacher, anything beyond algebra is a waste of time. Therefore, scoring high on the math portion of the SAT does not really indicate inteligence, just interest.
(I know Tech students are smart, but I think most students at all colleges are smart.)

Just Thinking Please Look at the offers for RHODE Scholars. What type of degrees and #s of Degrees are offered? Many of the Rhode Scholarships offered are not in degrees Tech Offers. Tech students compete with fewer schools for fewer degrees. More student compete for more degrees from Rhodes in the History, Lit, and PolySi field. Hell an FSU football player got a shot at and completed his Rhodes Scholarship. I wish more Tech students would get a Rhodes Scholarship but I Don’t think that makes TECH less important in the Technological Fields. That is just me and my opinion.

Did you read about the English corp. that just made the longest KILL SHOT? He was a mile and 1/2 away. It took 3 sec. for the bullet to hit it’s mark. He KILLED 2 DESERT RATS and their Machinegun with 3 shots. He aimed 2 ft. high and 18″ left to kill the RAGHEADS. I bet he didn’t know math but his Spotter and the sight maker knew som math. Elevation, Wind, and Velocity all factored into those KILL SHOTS from a MILE AND A HALF. Your so richt you don’t need math or understanding of electricity to LIVE, but being stupid of them could cost you your life.

POAD, If Georgia Tech was such a great school like MIT, they would still be able to get the RHODES SCHOLARSHIP and if the ACC was so much better academically they would too. Only three schools from the ACC have had more RHODES SCHOLARSHIPS than UGA. I am not saying take Georgia Tech and the colleges in the ACC are not good, but these people who are always writing about how tough the academics are at Tech and the ACC are fooling themselves. Besides very few of the Tech football players are getting engineering degrees. Then Tech want to boast about the management school, yet they don,t produce the Rhodes Scholars.

Buzz, I got a degree from UGA in Psychology (pretty easy degree compaired to an engineering degree.) And yes, I started out my first after graduating making 30K, while the average Tech grad starts out at 60K and gets a 3% raise the rest of his life. However, after five years I was the salesmanager for my comapany making over 100K and a company car, phone, expense account etc.. But perhapse the most rewarding part of the job is going down to the engineering department at 11:55 am and telling the Georgia Tech graduates that they will have to take lunch late and change some lay-out drawing for me, while I take customers to lunch (and a few beers). “We need them finished before we come back, sorry.”

I would like to point one thing out that is glaring and hilarious in this thread. Note how ONLY UGA graduates feel the need to post their salaries and lifestyles. We get it pups, 1 out of every 1000 of you will do well financially as a result of making good financial decisions in combination with some good fortune, which is the same as with graduates from most schools. Nothing about UGA sets you up to have better odds.
When I was interviewing for medical schools 5 years ago, one interviewer told me, “You have a 3.## at GT?? Don’t even worry about it, that’s better than most 4.0’s at UGA”. That is how the two degrees are viewed by those in the highest echelon of education.
