ACC’s billion-dollar deal

As some of you may have heard, the ACC seems to have done very well for itself, according to the Sports Business Journal.

It is reporting that ESPN has purchased the ACC’s TV rights for football and men’s basketball for $1.86 billion over 12 years. Yep, that said billion. The ACC has not come out and publicly said a deal is done. Neither has the Worldwide Leader, which isn’t normally modest about such things. The deal picks up in 2012 and lasts through the 2022-23 seasons.

The increase from the ACC’s current contract is substantial: $80 million a year more to $155 million. To compare, SEC schools split $205 million a year in its deal with ESPN. So, factoring in the share the conference offices receive, each school in the ACC will pocket  $11.92 million a year compared to the SEC’s $15.77 million.

Drilling a bit further down, Tech will be pocketing $6 million and a few pennies more each year.

Again, all of this is based on the numbers being in the ballpark.

Now, you may ask a few questions:

Does this mean the super-conference talk is dead?

Does this mean Tech won’t be joining the Big Ten or SEC?

Does this mean Tech will be adding sports? Moving ahead on construction projects?

The answers:

I don’t think there was much to it other than “boys and their toys” in the first place.

I don’t think this was anything more than filling air time.

Doubt it, but that’s based on nothing other than what I would do if I were coming into new money. Remember Tech has more than $100 million in debt that it plans on refinancing in 2012 and then paying down.

Woohoo, my first “first.” ESPN doesn’t think we’re too much of a weak sister if they’re putting out that kind of money. Now we just have to go out and earn it by beating up on some OOC teams (UGA, USCe, LSU, OSU, OU and/or UF) next year.

A couple of questions….1. Is this true? 2. If so, can there be binding clauses to prevent a team from fleeing the conference (or clauses voiding the deal)? If true, the ACC didn’t do too bad for itself, eh?

Babe, right now I’ll only be able to make it back for the season opener. I try to make one game a year. I hope to try and get to Blacksburg this year…definitely my favorite road game!

Goat, it doesn’t make sense now for teams to bolt to the SEC. The upside is now only slightly more money instead of LOTS more money. The downside is that neither FSU nor Clemson have winning records against the SEC. I don’t think a school like FSU is willing to downgrade its status from perennial powerhouse to the likes of Ole Miss for a couple bucks. They’re already a rich school due to boosters.

Please

Lets not entertain the thought of joining the SEC.

Losing to UGA all the time is enough I can only imagine if we play UF, AL, AUB, LSU,

my chance for 8 win seasons will never happen then

Cmon people help your Great Coach here

Here we go again with the Dawgs hating…

Tech could beat MSU, UM, Arkansas, Vandy, KY, and potentially Auburn, GA, SC. I think that’s 8-4 average seasons son. Notice I never said Tech would beat Florida, LSU, and Bama.

What country do you run? Your campus is located in the middle of 5.6 million people and your highschool stadium is never full until a real opponent comes to town, you know UGA.

So since you run a country you might want to force your people to show up to games

Well done, John Swofford. About what was expected and had been rumored in light of the CBS/ESPN contract. An additional $6 Mil./yr. is nice, but still leaves us $10-11 Mil./yr. Behind Big Ten although closes gap substantially on SEC. Before we get overly excited, however, we have to remember $1.86 Billion for 12 years still pales in comparison to the CBS/TBS $10.8 Billion 14 year March Madness deal. You know the big conferences still have to be planning on how to get more of that lucre.

Hey smalls. Grantham was a third pick that will likely get owned. Early and often.

You know, UGA has National Championship caliber recruits, money and facilities. How come they haven’t won one since 80? Care to answer that? I think it’s cause they suck.

And the truth is it’s safer to let my daughter walk the campus around Tech than date a UGA quarterback.

Buzzed, ESPN will probably coin something about ACC defenses, smart kids, or fundamentals. It wouldn’t surprise me to see them talk about “history.” From 1980 through 2004, the teams currently in the ACC won 7 national championships.

If UM and FSU are anywhere near as good as advertised, look for a LOT of file footage in 2011 from the Ken Dorsey, Jimmy Johnson, Warrick Dunn, Charlie Ward, and Peter Warrick hay days.

One last thing, look for more Game Day games for the ACC now. Game Day doesn’t usually happen unless it’s an ESPN/ABC game. More ESPN access means more Game Day. ESPN will now have a vested interest in the succes of the ACC.

Interestingly looks like ACC contract expires one year before SEC contract. Looks smart trying to be
first contract to be renewed next round. These big contracts with ESPN would appear to put Big 12 and PAC 10 in tough spot although they have a couple of years left on their existing contracts. Off to FOX Sports I suppose. Wonder what the FOX affiliate overlap looks like.

Ok, for the idiot (small johnson) talking about coaches, let’s talk about your new one. What is one of the things that happens a lot more often in a 3-4 defense instead a 4-3 defense? More blitzes. What happens when you blitz an option offense. Thats right, it gets shoved down your throat. Your “coach” has ZERO experience against the option. None, nadda, zilch, absolutely nothing! I’ve talked to the reasonable UGA fans I know, and they are honestly worried about that one aspect of the switch to this style of defense, because the closest thing Grantham has ever faced compared to the option is that stupid Wildcat in the NFL, and there are a lot of differences between the two. A lot. So, good luck in November pups. I personally can’t wait to see our boys go out there and tear some more of that hedge out of the Sanford Cesspool, and allow CPJ to be 2-0 in your stadium while @ GT. Have a Good Night
