Georgia Tech vs. Miami

As many of you know, Georgia Tech will host Miami in an important three-game ACC series at Russ Chandler Stadium, beginning Friday.

Tech needs to win this series. It has stumbled a bit recently, dropping three of its past five series, including to relative lightweights Virginia Tech and N.C. State.

If the Yellow Jackets (39-9, 17-7) can sweep the series against the Hurricanes (36-11, 18-6) , it could be on top of the ACC by Monday if North Carolina can take care of business against co-leader Virginia (40-9, 18-6).

The rotation

Georgia Tech RHP Deck McGuire (6-3, 3.05 ERA) vs.  Miami LHP Chris Hernandez (7-2, 3.04)

Georgia Tech RHP Mark Pope (7-0, 3.73 ERA) vs. Miami RHP Jason Santana (5-2, 4.83)

Georgia Tech  LHP Jed Bradley (8-2, 3.75 ERA) vs. Miami RHP David Gutierrez (5-0, 3.86)

A breakdown of the game:

Batting Average/.328/.301/GT
Runs Per Game/9.6/7.9/GT
Hits Per Game/11.8/10.3/GT
Home Runs/98/73/GT
Stolen Bases-Attempts/46-65/84-109/UM
K’s Per 9.0/8.6/9.0/UM
BB’s Per 9.0/2.9/3.1/GT
Opponent Batting Average/.258/.237/UM
Fielding Percentage/.968/.972/UM

I wouldn’t call any team that could get a bid (VT) a lightweight, but NCST was a let down for sure.

Good luck this weekend guys! I will be watching yall on TV (1-year old has a birthday this weekend, otherwise I’d be there). Go Tech!

Congrats on the numbers Plagman.

As long as Danny Hall is here, Tech will continue to flop in May. He really blew it last year when he pitched Deck on two days rest in the regionals. Danny needs to hire a real pitching coach if he wants his pitching staff to stop falling apart late in the year. Instead, he gave his college roommate the job after he got tired of coaching high school basketball.

It would help those of us thinking about going to the games to print the games’ starting times.
You know, so we’d know when to come to the ballpark?

The CWS and preceeding regionals are always a crapshoot. The game is more about the law of averages then it is strategy. If we can find a hot streak and other teams get upset, perhaps we can be lucky enough to be in the finals.

That being said, Biff has a point; the pitching staff needs some improvement.

Go Tech

GT caught a break this week by not having to face Eric Erickson. GT is like clockwork, great start to the season and once the month of May hits, a complete dropoff. Apparently Doug you don’t understand the logic in baseball that good pitching beats good hitting. Based on that and the fact Miami is just a better team overall, Canes take 2 of 3.

Pitching usually beats offense….so Miami wins two of three and UVA does the same against UNC. UNC is down this year in comparison to the past several years, while UVA has been ranked #1 for most of the season. All four teams are ranked which shows the depth of the ACC Coastal.

GT will not even be in the conversation of ACC regular season champs after this weekend. That will be decided next week in Miami for the ACC series of the year when Virginia/Miami play for the ACC regular season title and top seed in the conference tournament.

While we desire to play quality opponents, we must look at creating balance to allow our team the ability to peak at the proper time and give our team the best chance to win.

Curiously, in a supposed anti-incumbent year, most of the departing are not retiring but seeking higher office. We may recycle more than we replace. The bad news is that a frustrating 114 seats still have but one contestant. Two of them aren’t even incumbents, meaning they will affect state policy without being vetted by voters. And I have to think that we’d be better off if many had run instead for the Legislature — and cut down on the number running unopposed. Georgia’s problems are numerous. They aren’t going away. There’s too much stale thinking at the Capitol, on both sides of the aisle. New voices would be welcome.
