Why Tech and Alabama postponed

Georgia Tech’s game against Alabama could still be played if the schools can’t find satisfactory replacements, athletics director Dan Radakovich said on Tuesday.

Both schools agreed to postpone the home-and-home series, scheduled at Alabama in 2013 and Bobby Dodd Stadium in 2014. However, as is common with scheduling, scenarios could shift that could bring the game back on-line.

“If they didn’t have a game and we didn’t have a game, we’d play,” Radakovich said.

Radakovich debunked the numerous theories that have been pushed during the past few days. The postponement has nothing to do with any kind of super-conference possibilities and  it has nothing to do with coach Paul Johnson’s displeasure with the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game played at the Georgia Dome at the beginning of the season, which he said has given those schools a recruiting advantage in Atlanta. Lastly, no, Tech isn’t afraid to play the Tide.

“We have the greatest respect for the University of Alabama and their football program,” Radakovich said. “Playing them would be a lot of fun.”

Radakovich said he contacted Alabama athletics director Mal Moore in December to discuss postponing the series because at the time he was considering some attractive alternatives that would help Tech’s recruiting efforts, as well as balance their schedule. He declined to say what those alternatives were.

When he and Moore talked again in late January, Alabama was already lining up games to fill Tech’s slot. Neither the Jackets nor the Tide have announced those games. Moore was in Arizona on Tuesday and couldn’t be reached for comment, but an official in Alabama’s athletics department confirmed the timeline of events.

It is not uncommon for non-conference games to either be canceled or moved around. Tech moved a home game against Vanderbilt, scheduled for this season, to 2016 to accommodate a home-and-home series with Kansas that will start this fall, for example. Army bought out its game with Tech three years ago.

The home game in 2014 against Alabama would have helped to balance out Tech’s schedule. During the past few years, Tech has hosted Virginia Tech, Clemson and Georgia – three of its biggest rivals and biggest revenue-generators — at home during odd-numbered years.

Radakovich said the alternatives being considered are home-and-home series that wouldn’t involve payouts for either team, other than normal expenses paid for travel.

The game was scheduled by former athletics director Dave Braine in 2004 to renew a rivalry that started in 1902 and ended in 1984 with the Tide owning a 28-21-3 advantage. Moore told the Tuscaloosa News last week that he hoped to resume the series.

“I’m sure we’ll get a game down the road with Alabama,” Radakovich said.

A more attractive alternative for Tech to play in football:

Read that Furman Western Carolina or The College of Charleston.

I think that South Carolina State type game really helps recruit running backs that want to be Quarterbacks. In place of this game, GT can schedule Arkansas State and maybe recruit some Safeties that want to be D Tackles. This Radovich is a friggin recruiting genious. Bottom Line, Tech don’t want no part of Bama and everybody knows it.

I hope everyone who believes will take a second away from this blog and pray for strength and comfort for Nick Roger’s family and friends.

Everytime I watched the Tech offense have success against us I always would think to myself, “This wouldn’t happen to a Saban defense.” I guess we may not find out. That is a shame.

A game that would help recruiting efforts probably means a game against somebody from up north, like an Ohio State, Penn State or Rutgers. We seem to have luck getting quality guys from up north (ex. Derrick Morgan).

If I read Doug’s writing correctly, and I think I did, the reason is that “he was considering some attractive alternatives that would help Tech’s recruiting efforts, as well as balance their schedule.”

Only possibilities to “help” recruiting efforts would be Tennessee (even though that state doesn’t produce THAT many BCS prospects, it IS a neighboring state where we’ve not gotten a lot of kids lately), UF (we don’t play FSU every year, and Miami really is “different” than the rest of Florida), Texas (not necessarily UT, but some Texas School; we’ve had some luck recruiting there, and maybe we want a bigger presence), ND (playing a revived ND program is a “win” no matter where you play), and MAYBE a California team, though I doubt it. South Carolina does NOT fit the criteria: Not enough prospects, and the Clemson rivalry gives us all the exposure we need there.

Nebraska roots are with an option offense, but that would be a stretch recruiting-wise. The only other “recruiting opportunity” DRAD could be looking at would be the CFA Kickoff game … against any number of teams from anywhere.

Will be interesting to see what happens, BUT the options appear “finite” to me … considering the reason given.

No fan of any FBS team (e.g., Alabama) which schedules a first-year team from the FCS level (e.g., Georgia State) has legitimate ground to complain about Tech wanting to adjust its schedule (NOT cancel the game).

Eastside Jacket – Beating Miss St/Vandy and losing to the worst UGA team in a decade (on your home field) is not evidence to claim Tech is not afraid of the SEC. Bama would rough ride the nerds worse than UGA does.

Yea, you beat the only two SEC teams with losing records. Great job, for Yech that is an accomplishment. The worst team in the league that had a winning record (Weedeater Bowl Bound) ran all over your piece of crap team on your home field. 300 plus yards rushing.

No one thinks Rad woke up in December and called Bama because he wanted to help recruiting. There is no better a team to help your rep than Bama and you Yellow chickens know it.

How much more exposure can you get than by playing the #1 team in the country? Granted Bama might slip a notch or two by 2012 but really, everyone will be watching the beat down they give you. PJ doesn’t want THAT kind of exposure. Clemson got it, Va Tech got it, now its Tech’s turn to get it. Come on PJ man up and punch some faces in your athletics dept. to get this deal done.

I can buy the whole balance the schedule stuff, but the recruiting side of it doesn’t cut it. What better way to boost recruiting than to play a top tier team from a bordering state. Maybe a little cop-out on that one. As a Tech fan, I really hope they can find another top notch team to sub in. As the great Ric Flair says, “to be the man, you have to beat thye man”! This was a series that I was really looking forward to. I truly hope they make it happen sometime soon. Either way, it does not look good for our program to bow out the way we did…

Ask Auburn if Tech is scared… Reality check- if the ACC is that weak top to bottom please explain how they’ve gone 10-11 vs. the SEC head-to-head over the past two years. There’s a fact for you. Seems like your mighty SEC would have beaten up on such a weak conference, when in reality they’re barely cracking .500.

“Weak” competition would be San Jose State, GA State, Tenn Tech, Arkansas State, LA Lafayette, UT-Martin, Idaho State- standard SEC OOC opponents. Against BCS foes you’re less than impressive.
