Tevin Washington secured his spot as Georgia Tech’s No. 2 quarterback by leading the White team to four touchdowns in Saturday’s 27-7 win over the Gold team in the T-Day game at Bobby Stadium.
The game was called at halftime because of rain, but not before Washington ran for three scores and completed a 70-yard pass to wide receiver Stephen Hill for another.
“We’re just trying to get better, that’s all we’re trying to do,” said Hill, who robbed Dominique Reese of an interception when he wrestled the ball away from him at the 5-yard line on an earlier drive.
Tech used play-action on the long score. As Hill ran by cornerback Mario Butler and past safety Isaiah Johnson, he said he could hear coach Paul Johnson yelling, “Throw the ball.” Butler said there was a miscommunication on the play call by the defense, which is still learning the 3-4 system being put in by defensive coordinator Al Groh.
Washington, and redshirt freshmen Jordan Luallen and David Sims competed in the spring to be the No. 2 behind Joshua Nesbitt, who sat out the practices after having minor surgery on his ankle.
Washington and Sims had the most success on Saturday, with Sims leading the Gold team to their only touchdown, a 13-yard run by A-back Orwin Smith on an option play. Sims also used his running ability to scamper for a first down on a third-and-eight play earlier in the drive.
Washington said he hopes to use this momentum to push Nesbitt for meaningful snaps when the fall practices begin in August.
“That’s everybody’s goal,” Washington said. “I don’t think anybody comes to college to be a back-up.”
Overall, the offenses combined for 350 yards (274 by the White), including 122 passing (all by the White). Anthony Allen led all rushers with 91 yards on 15 carries. Hill led the receivers with three catches for 105 yards. Unlike the previous two T-Day games, there were no turnovers.
“Guys are getting more used to what they’re doing,” Johnson said.
That’s true on both sides on the ball. On defense, outside linebacker Anthony Egbuniwe and inside linebacker Brad Jefferson made a few tackles on Saturday as they continue to adjust to new schemes, new philosophies and new lingo.
“We still have a lot of things to work on to be sure, but I saw some positive things out there today,” Johnson said. “The best news is that no one got injured.”

The O is as good as ever, perhaps even better than last year, but the D might be the worst since the days when Joe Hamilton had to put up 40+ just have a chance to win. Question is, how many 48-45 games can we win? In Paul I trust, but we have got to find some playmakers on D.

Very simple Jinx, the Heisman is a media popularity contest. The actual best player in College Football rarely wins. I’m not saying Dwyer should have won, but he and Spiller were clearly the best RB’s in college footbal last year. The kid from Bama looked like a back-up against Auburn last year. Besides he runs behind 1st round draft picks while Dwyer ran behind 250 pound converted tight ends at tackle.

FACTS – Tech was not founded by UGA alumns. It was Conferderate Officers that had attended EMORY. The UGA alumns in the state legislature wanted Tech to be part of UGA in Athens, but the Emory lawmakers finally got it chartered as a seperate public school in Atlanta. Two of Atlanta’s most famous phrases – “The South Will Rise Again” (a cry for Southern industrialists to produce better goods than the North) and “Too Busy To Hate” (started at Tech when GT was the first school in the Southeast to peacefully integrate – it is now at Atlanta motto) came from Georgia Tech.
Don’t even try to act like Tech owes UGA anything. By the way, Tech has a much larger economic impact on this state. If Tech ever shut its doors, UGA couldn’t AFFORD to exist! This year’s report credits GT and its research sectors with a 2 BILLION dollar economic impact on the state. Georgia’s wasn’t even half of that. You’re the flagship in name only. We wont…for one thing our offense will likely be expecting what their defense can bring, and their defense will still wet themselves against our offense. This year was only an embarrassment for Jaybo Shaw, Bay Bay Thomas and the GT linebackers (overflowed the ball EVERY time!). Everyone else could see that even with our linebackers failing to stay home and lock up the cutback run, we still had a chance to win that game at the end. Imagine if Nebitt’s ankle didn’t “act up.” I’m never embarrassed in front of a Dawg. No Tech alumnus should be.

Stay classy UGA fans that feel the need to bash Dwyer. I’m confused about the ESPN announcers bashing him comment though. Maybe I missed something, but I heard praise for his north-south skills and the only negative thing was weight and number of catches, both of which can be worked on. All of them agreed that he was a great fit for the steeler offense and were surprised he went so late and blammed it on the false positive drug test. I will never understand why some so-called fans feel the need to bash a kid just because he is from a opposing team. Just shows how pathetic your life is and I don’t think your lowly opinion is going to matter much as JD cashes his check and lives his dream of playing pro football.

To clarify, Agriculture is still the number one industry in this state. No school in this state does more to support and advance Agriculture than the University of Georgia. No school in this state can match the quality of alumnus than UGA. Doctors, lawyers and leaders come from UGA, the first state chartered university in America. On top of that, UGA owns Tech on any athletic stage. That’s the flagship boys. Now go tweek your tricycles.
And nerds, stop making up useless facts to augment your obvious lack of self esteem and worth. There’s got to be some pride being stuck in a cube of the IT department one day. Wow, GT has been overshadowed by GA in spring game attendance that past three springs, but it’s GT who has a 20-7 record, and GA with an 18-8 record. My guess is, unless GA wins 10+ in 2010 GT will yet again finished with a better record ….. it’s just too bad the Jackets can’t get better attendance at the Spring games b/c it apparantly is the difference in not winning national championships.

I was actually at the spring game and I liked what I saw from the defense. They seemed to get good penetration at times and were very aggressive and hard hitting, but the problem was they were playing against the triple option. The penetration they were getting was good but the misdirection of the offense was throwing them offguard. The pass coverage was 50-50 some of the time they were making plays and shutting down receivers, but they left some people a little open. Although on the long touchdown pass to Stephen Hill by Tevin Washington I thought that the coverage was good, but the pass was just a very well thrown ball.

Wow, I thought Tech fans were supposed to be ‘nerds’? Spelling 101? WB-it is there, not their. SHOWCLASS-learn how to spell hypocrite if you are going to call someone that, exactly what church do you attend and how many people have you helped today? If Tech fans are going to call UGA fans dumb, at least spell correctly. It might not hurt to not let CHAMPS around a computer, since he contradicted himself-says Richt turns a blind eye and then spouts off Richt kicked off a QB. Makes sense?
Everyone heard Dwyer failed a test, if true, I hate it for the young man and it probably did cost him a couple of rounds in the draft. He is a perfect fit at Pittsburg, I love smash mouth football. Hope he does well.

J, you would know about the wrestling im sure you where sitting front row. The truth, looks like its going to be between ben anderson and tj barnes. Anderson is in the 280 range and barnes is in the 310 range maybe heavier. The coaches i think would love to have barnes claim the starting job but he is raw. JC Lanier is also in the running but recovering from an injury last yr.

Interesting take on the draft results. Paul Johnson brings in a totally new system that does not feature throwing but focuses on running. He is immediately successful with a first round WR and a feature back that is a sixth round, 19th pick RB. Bey Bey and JD were great players and great guys. Can’t wait though for the “recruited” players to slide into place.
Al Groh and the “D” needs to play catch-up to the offense. It is going to fun again this year.

It is dirty and smells of litter, the streets stinks as if people have relieved themselves in the gutters the evening before. Have a little pride clean up your town. As far as football is concerned your school is an under achiever. Any team with as many 4 star recruits as you have had over the past years should have won it all. Yet you still get you butt handed to you by the same teams. You guys don’t have a lot to boast about and certainly have no class.

It must sting to know that if Athens, GA sunk into the ground, pretty much no one of importance would bat an eyelash, unless they were in dire need of a secretary, an early-childhood education major, a journalist, a frat boy, a hippie, a small-time musician, or an English major.

OK… Here’s the reality…
We don’t have the hosses in the trenches to kick it up to the next level.
Once we control the lines of scrimmage, like we did in 1990, we will play for a NC.
I like Johnson. But the fact of the matter is, when we play against an LSU, UGA or a mediocre BIG 10 program, and lose, it’s for TWO REASONS….
#1) We get pushed around way too much, where it counts…. The lines of scrimmage.
#2) We don’t have a QB who can throw the ball.
Go back to 1990: We had a QB who could run AND THROW. And we had big pushes along the line, when the ball was snapped.
Nesbitt’s a good running back. Washington is too. But we need a Shawn Jones, Joe Ham or Godsey that can keep the defense guessing.
And for gosh sakes… We have to have lines of scrimmage, that don’t get knocked on their asses.

National championships
Years in which the Bulldogs finished with a number-one ranking in at least 3 of the final national polls recognized by the College Football Hall of Fame and included in the official NCAA Football Record Book:[10][29]
* 1942 – 11–1 Georgia was chosen as champion by at least half of the recognized polls. Georgia was led by All-Americans Frank Sinkwich and end George Poschner, along with a young back named Charley Trippi. The Bulldogs knocked off 9 consecutive opponents and ranked No. 1 in the nation. Georgia earned a Rose Bowl bid after it blanked Georgia Tech 34–0 in Athens to end the regular season. Georgia then edged UCLA 9-0 in the Rose Bowl
* 1980 – The Bulldogs beat Notre Dame 17–10 in the Sugar Bowl to finish 12-0 and claim the National Championship. Notable contributors during the season included Herschel Walker, Buck Belue and Lindsay Scott (Georgia was listed first by AP, Berryman, FACT, FB News, FW, Helms, National Championship Foundation, NFF, Poling, Sporting News & UPI).
Other years in which the Bulldogs finished with a number-one ranking in at least one of the final national polls and included in the official NCAA Football Record Book:[10][29]
* 1927 – With a 9-1-0 record, the Bulldogs were called the “dream and wonder team” and were ranked No. 1 in the nation with one regular season game remaining, but were upset by Georgia Tech by a score of 12-0 at Grant Field in Atlanta, Georgia.[30] Nevertheless, at the end of the season, Georgia was ranked number 1 in two polls recognized by the NCAA.[31] The Bulldogs were also listed as number 1 in two other polls of the 1927 season, but most recognize Illinois as the 1927 National Champion.[32]
See also: 1927 Georgia Bulldogs football team
* 1946 Georgia went 11-0 and beat North Carolina 20-10 and was proclaimed national champions by one poll recognized by the NCAA.
* 1968 Georgia was chosen by one national poll when they went 9-1-2 losing to Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl. Overtime was not allowed in the NCAA yet so Georgia tied with Tennessee and Houston.

I have to agree with J Adams on this one you are officially an idiot, congratulations! Go to the NCAA website and read it. I’m constantly hearing make believe stats from moronic ugay fans but this one is close to the best ever. A 1980 title is all you have. That’s it. If you think you have more than one then you must be an idiot. Wait, you are an idiot so this makes sense. All you ugay fans talk about is 1980. That was 30 years ago let it go. Instead of talking national titles maybe you should worry about winning you conference first. But before that you need to win your division, but they can’t. Your comments tell me only one thing, you know nothing about college football.

Fact: GE brings 400 jobs to Atlanta, due to a shared project with GT.
So tell me, how many jobs has UGA brought to Georgia?? Have they ever even been MENTIONED in that regard??

BobinBuford has his head screwed on straight. The dogs on this blog are a bunch of know nothings that believe that their allegiance to a football team should be enough to make the school legitimate. I went to Tech to get an education, and football was a great bonus. Georgie kids go with the expectation that the football team will win championships (what a let down), and they get a degree that will open doors for them… it’s just that those doors lead to managerial positions at bath and body works.

“You are so wron Whiskey clear on economic impact on state”
I assume you meant to type that I am “wronG”? If so, cite sources, please. Mine was this year’s University System of Georgia report on its economic impact to the state. It gives this report annually to the state legislature’s various committees. It is broken down by each university – of which UGA is supposedly the flagship. The quoted impact from GT was over 2 billion dollars. That of UGA was less than half of that.
Someone earlier tried to claim agriculture drives this state’s economy, and I’ll agree that there are plenty of growers here. They need farmers, agg. scientists and tractor technicians, surely enough. But which schools supply those? Farmers – ABAC. Ag Scientists – Valdosta State, Tractor Technicians – Southern Poly.
As for agriculture supporting the state…actually the state economy’s fastest growing areas are technology companies and healthcare. Sounds like a boon for Tech and Emory.
You can call me wrong or even be angry, but it’s just information from a bunch of public state of Georgia websites that I take the time to read and know about.

Dwyer being taken in round # 456 and in 24,500th place exposes the MYTH that CPJ develops talent. Dwyer was vastly over rated and his draft placement proves it. With all the ACC accolades and all the AJC superlatives thrown his way, we SEC afficionados KNEW that he was a pear shaped, waddling runner. Small but slow and now we all know why Richt said I PASS when he was being recruited out of Chamblee.
This is badly damaging to tech’s desire to finally being able to recruit big time backs. They will want to play in a pro style O , not a middle school offense that was JUNKED in the 70s.
