Washington, Hill shine at T-Day game

Tevin Washington secured his spot as Georgia Tech’s No. 2 quarterback by leading the White team to four touchdowns in Saturday’s 27-7 win over the Gold team in the T-Day game at Bobby Stadium.

The game was called at halftime because of rain, but not before Washington ran for three scores and completed a 70-yard pass to wide receiver Stephen Hill for another.

“We’re just trying to get better, that’s all we’re trying to do,” said Hill, who robbed Dominique Reese of an interception when he wrestled the ball away from him at the 5-yard line on an earlier drive.

Tech used play-action on the long score. As Hill ran by cornerback Mario Butler and past safety Isaiah Johnson, he said he could hear coach Paul Johnson yelling, “Throw the ball.” Butler said there was a miscommunication on the play call by the defense, which is still learning the 3-4 system being put in by defensive coordinator Al Groh.

Washington, and redshirt freshmen Jordan Luallen and David Sims competed in the spring to be the No. 2 behind Joshua Nesbitt, who sat out the practices after having minor surgery on his ankle.

Washington and Sims had the most success on Saturday, with Sims leading the Gold team to their only touchdown, a 13-yard run by A-back Orwin Smith on an option play. Sims also used his running ability to scamper for a first down on a third-and-eight play earlier in the drive.

Washington said he hopes to use this momentum to push Nesbitt for meaningful snaps when the fall practices begin in August.

“That’s everybody’s goal,” Washington said. “I don’t think anybody comes to college to be a back-up.”

Overall, the offenses combined for 350 yards (274 by the White), including 122 passing (all by the White). Anthony Allen led all rushers with 91 yards on 15 carries. Hill led the receivers with three catches for 105 yards. Unlike the previous two T-Day games, there were no turnovers.

“Guys are getting more used to what they’re doing,” Johnson said.

That’s true on both sides on the ball. On defense, outside linebacker Anthony Egbuniwe and inside linebacker Brad Jefferson made a few tackles on Saturday as they continue to adjust to new schemes, new philosophies and new lingo.

“We still have a lot of things to work on to be sure, but I saw some positive things out there today,” Johnson said. “The best news is that no one got injured.”

FACTS – Tech was not founded by UGA alumns. It was Conferderate Officers that had attended EMORY. The UGA alumns in the state legislature wanted Tech to be part of UGA in Athens, but the Emory lawmakers finally got it chartered as a seperate public school in Atlanta. Two of Atlanta’s most famous phrases – “The South Will Rise Again” (a cry for Southern industrialists to produce better goods than the North) and “Too Busy To Hate” (started at Tech when GT was the first school in the Southeast to peacefully integrate – it is now at Atlanta motto) came from Georgia Tech.

Don’t even try to act like Tech owes UGA anything. By the way, Tech has a much larger economic impact on this state. If Tech ever shut its doors, UGA couldn’t AFFORD to exist! This year’s report credits GT and its research sectors with a 2 BILLION dollar economic impact on the state. Georgia’s wasn’t even half of that. You’re the flagship in name only. Like the Queen of England I guess…

Kay…….Yeah I heard PJ had asked a couple of the local high school coaches that run the same offense to come out and try and help him figure some things out. Sounds like it worked……..read where the offense had more yards at halftime (350) than there were “fans” in the stadium (300). Maybe he should call a couple of more high school coaches over to help him with out with what sounds to be another dreadful defense. Good luck this season in the A she she. I hear both Duke and Weak Forest are loaded!

GT Man, that’s really not how to look at a scrimmage….you need to watch position battles. Some things worth noting were the linebackers really pressuring Tevin. I know Egbuniwe pancaked him before he could pitch it once. Hill is improving, and that’s good. The D does need more time to develop, but by Fall I’ll bet it’ll be improved. If it’s better than last year, the offense won’t have to be as amazing as it has been to maintain success.

We wont…for one thing our offense will likely be expecting what their defense can bring, and their defense will still wet themselves against our offense. This year was only an embarrassment for Jaybo Shaw, Bay Bay Thomas and the GT linebackers (overflowed the ball EVERY time!). Everyone else could see that even with our linebackers failing to stay home and lock up the cutback run, we still had a chance to win that game at the end. Imagine if Nebitt’s ankle didn’t “act up.” I’m never embarrassed in front of a Dawg. No Tech alumnus should be.

Crime in Athens

Hilarious that the dumb Dawgs talk about crime when the per capita in Athens is 4th in the nation. This crime level is a direct result of the calibre of athlete brought into Athens who drive the crime rate to these record levels. There is no sadder bunch than the collection of folks that call themselves “Dawg fans.” Remember, this great example of higher education – How many points is a 3 point basket worth? How many halves are in a basketball game? Incredible.

Good to be a GT fan, wish the weather would have worked with us for the second half. Overall things looked good leading into summer drills. These kids looked good, keep up the good work.
Stay classy UGA fans that feel the need to bash Dwyer. I’m confused about the ESPN announcers bashing him comment though. Maybe I missed something, but I heard praise for his north-south skills and the only negative thing was weight and number of catches, both of which can be worked on. All of them agreed that he was a great fit for the steeler offense and were surprised he went so late and blammed it on the false positive drug test. I will never understand why some so-called fans feel the need to bash a kid just because he is from a opposing team. Just shows how pathetic your life is and I don’t think your lowly opinion is going to matter much as JD cashes his check and lives his dream of playing pro football.

It’s raining outside we better call off the second half. That way, we have an excuse for both the shoddy defensive play and the non-attendance.

To clarify, Agriculture is still the number one industry in this state. No school in this state does more to support and advance Agriculture than the University of Georgia. No school in this state can match the quality of alumnus than UGA. Doctors, lawyers and leaders come from UGA, the first state chartered university in America. On top of that, UGA owns Tech on any athletic stage. That’s the flagship boys. Now go tweek your tricycles.

And nerds, stop making up useless facts to augment your obvious lack of self esteem and worth. There’s got to be some pride being stuck in a cube of the IT department one day. Remember, when you peek your egg head over the cube wall to gander at the corner office with windows, that is the place for a leader groomed at the flagship university of this state.

Gee, sounds like somebody wants all other college and universities’ grads to hate the University of Georgia. I’m positive that the Emory University graduates will take issue with your arrogant statements. By the way, what is the University of Georgia Hospital like? I’m sorry, that would be the veterinary hospital, I forgot. We all love dogs and cats.

By the way, the proper usage is “alumni” when speaking of the plural.

Damn … it’s hilarious to read so man dog fans posting about the low attendance at GT spring game, Dwyer being drafted in the 6th round; therefore, he’s a drug addict, all the guys drafted were Gailey’s talent (Funny, I don’t remember ANY of them putting up the #s each did under Gailey). Wow, GT has been overshadowed by GA in spring game attendance that past three springs, but it’s GT who has a 20-7 record, and GA with an 18-8 record. My guess is, unless GA wins 10+ in 2010 GT will yet again finished with a better record ….. it’s just too bad the Jackets can’t get better attendance at the Spring games b/c it apparantly is the difference in not winning national championships.

Grasp at some more straws doggie fans……

I was actually at the spring game and I liked what I saw from the defense. They seemed to get good penetration at times and were very aggressive and hard hitting, but the problem was they were playing against the triple option. The penetration they were getting was good but the misdirection of the offense was throwing them offguard. The pass coverage was 50-50 some of the time they were making plays and shutting down receivers, but they left some people a little open. Although on the long touchdown pass to Stephen Hill by Tevin Washington I thought that the coverage was good, but the pass was just a very well thrown ball.

DVR the draft and went to the T-day game. There where more than 300 you crotch sniffing morons. Saw the analysis on dwyer. They said they had problems with his lateral movement and lack of experience pass catching and run blocking. The only thing that was mentioned about his weight was that he need to stay at about 230. They all agreed that he has great between the tackles skills and will be on the field for the steelers this year. SO SUCK ON IT UGAGERS!

I agree with you lucky. This defense will def. not be on its heels like the last 2 yrs. Not saying they will always make the play but it at least looks like they will be ALOT more agressive. Good to have a real backup this yr. Nothing against Jaybo but when he was in against the big boy he just couldnt handle it physically. Don’t think that will be the case anymore.

techfans, serious question about your defense. Who will play the NT this year in the 3-4? Most think it needs to be someone big (see Cody) but Grantham used smaller (275 lb) in the pros.
