Johnson stunned that Dwyer hasn’t been picked — updated

That Jonathan Dwyer has yet to be drafted stuns Paul Johnson, his former coach at Georgia Tech.

At one time projected to be a first-round pick when he announced in January he was leaving school after three seasons, Dwyer was finally selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the sixth rounds

Twelve running backs were selected ahead of him.

“Someone is going to get a heck of a football player,” Johnson said after Saturday’s T-Day game at Bobby Dodd Stadium. “If there are 90 guys better than him I haven’t seen them.

“It’s unbelievable.”

After rushing for 1,395 yards as a sophomore to earn ACC player of the year honors, he rushed for 1,395 more as a junior last season in helping the Yellow Jackets win the ACC.

When he announced he was turning pro, draft analysts questioned Dwyer’s weight, ability to catch the ball, blocking and pass-catching skills. He played at around 240 pounds in Tech’s spread-option, where he wasn’t asked to pass-block or catch, though he did snag a few passes, notably against FSU and against Iowa in the Orange Bowl

A toe injury sustained in the bowl game hampered his training and conditioning in the weeks leading up to the NFL Combine. As a result,  he ran a relatively slow 40 time and weighed 229 pounds, four more than his target weight. But the toe healed and a slimmer Dwyer (225 pounds) bounced back at Tech’s pro day a month later to run a 4.52, seven-thousandths faster than his time at the Combine and within the top-10 times posted in Indianapolis.

Analysts also wondered whether Dwyer could transition from lining up close to the line of scrimmage, as he did  in Tech’s spread-option, to the deeper start required in a pro-style offense. Dwyer pointed out after Tech’s pro day that he was used in that formation during his freshman season at Tech when Chan Gailey was coach.

Dwyer is the fourth Yellow Jacket taken in this year’s draft, following defensive end Derrick Morgan to Tennessee with the 16th pick, wide receiver Demaryius Thomas to Denver with the 22nd pick, and safety Morgan Burnett to Green Bay in the third round (71st overall) on Friday.

hope t.d. makes a trade and grabs him. he’s a beast, and will be a heck of a player on any team.

is it because of the failed drug test? i thought he was cleared of that, and there shouldnt be any upcoming suspensions.

It is, in fact, stunning. Dwyer’s stock has dropped immensely over the past few months…and it certainly doesn’t have everything to do with this drug test fiasco. It’s possible that Shanahan may try to move up into the 6th round to grab him

Update from the Spring game( I refuse to call it T-day or G-day or A-day or whatever all the other schools call it)

Washington ran the offense quite well.Made some really good throws also.

David Simms is also a great quarterback. Looked a lot like Nesbitt under that helmet. Made some good reads.

Luwallen needs to beef up and get tougher. Looks like another Jaybo, only taller.

Ant will be a good B back.

Stephen Hill made a nice catch for a 79 yd td.

One of the bright spots was from our punters and kickoffs from Blair and Poole. Looks like they been in the weight room. One punter(didn’t catch his name) had a 72yd punt, maybe rolling 15 of those yds.

Can’t wait til sept. Gonna be a fun season.

This is unbeleivable how do you go from a potential 1st rounder to looking like you will not be drafted. He should sue the league for putting him on the failed drug test list when he was already cleared. That cost him dearly.

Paul in RDU

Dwyer not being drafted so far makes you wonder what the NFL scouts were watching the last couple of years. Perhaps they are too enamoured of work out warriors (guys with great numbers at the combine but who can’t play a lick). Dwyer is a playmaker who’ll make some team very happy.

I agree JSS, much more to this story. You don’t come out of the season as a projected 1st rounder and have your stock fall off a cliff without there being a good reason for it. Sure, he had some poor times at the combine and may have been a bit overweight, but there is still an untold reason why he went from boom to bust without so much as a snap from scrimmage. Hard to imagine the drug test being the reason as the NFL have forgiven far more even if the test was legit.

“You don’t come out of the season as a projected 1st rounder and have your stock fall off a cliff without there being a good reason for it”. Uhhhh… he’s overweight, slow, can’t block, and can’t catch. The better question would be why any NFL team would take a chance on him? I think all of these factors were exposed once they removed him from the triple option and made him actually work out for NFL teams. There’s the reason for his draft stock dropping.

This fact about Dwyer confrims all of my comments about Dwyer. He IS small but he is slow.

It ALSO SENDS a terrible message to any kid that hopes to one day play big boy ball as a NFL RUNNING BACK. The WISHBONE is not big boy ball and it does not portray the needed talents for the NFL. ANY KID that is considering Tech as a back now will re evalutate. Look at Clemson where theri back was gone quickly. See? Head to head and Dwyer’s Tech team won over Clemson but who cares???

Tech is a middle school offense and Dwyer NOT BEING DRAFTED tells the whole embarrassing story.

CPJ is a laughing stock with the entire world now. The world knows that Dwyer got 33 vs A LOUSY GA D and was held to 0 vs Iowa in the first half. These stats doomed him.

JD dropping is the product of a lot of things at once. The questions about the offense he played in coupled with the fact that a lot of teams don’t have enough of a need in their two-deep at RB to warrant the investment. He’ll do well wherever he goes. The beauty of the NFL is that once your there, all that matters is how you perform. Look at T. Davis of UGA and Brady, 6th round to HOF, once they got a shot to play.

Besides, if the “Tech’s offense won’t help you get to the NFL” argument were true, wouldn’t it apply even more so to wide receivers? Bebe Thomas spent all of last season blocking downfield and running fly patterns…and he’s a 1st round pick.

So, according the “experts” from Athens, Dwyer’s drop is proof that CPJ’s offense will hurt recruiting RB’s, but Thomas’ 1st round selection means nothing. It was Chan’s expert recruiting. Right.

Does anyone know who the 2 fellows were who stayed with
Coach Johnson on the field during the T-Day game?

Paul Johnson isn’t exactly an authority on NFL talent.

Lets face it- no one wanted to waste NFL draft picks on running backs this year when there were so many defensive players and linemen available. Bad year for Dwyer to come out? Maybe, but he never got into playing shape at Tech. Watch the Steelers coaches put him back up to 240 but it won’t matter because he will only play 10 snaps per game maximum. And he will still be making 20 times the average UGA grad starting salary. Nice work if you can get it.

I can’t resist. I just don’t like you guys. So I like to get you fired up.

Wow, I bet you have a lot of friends.

If anyone wants to talk football, I was watching a college highlight reel on youtube of Mendenhall, who Dwyer will be stuck behind in Pittsburgh. Mendenhall is a big, burly, ripped dude, but he was getting caught from behind in all of the clips I saw. Conversely, when Dwyer got into open space at Tech, he didn’t get caught from behind, and Dwyer is kind of fat. Maybe this has to do with the offensive systems or the talent of teammates and opponents, but speed-wise, I don’t think Dwyer will have a problem in the NFL no matter what weight he plays at. Then you compare him to Jahvid Best, and after watching Best’s highlight reel, it seems to be that Best is not going to be able to run over anyone in the NFL or have much success with stiff-arms. Point being, of the running backs in this draft, I’m not sure how Dwyer won’t be one of the successful ones based on his all-around skill set. From the first time we saw him as a freshman backing up Choice, you could tell that he was way better than Choice, size and skill wise. And Choice has been a solid backup in the pros, which says to me that Dwyer is NFL starter quality.

Butts Wagner- Dwyer is NFL starter quality. The only problem is that the NFL scouts seem to put so much stock in a 40 time. Thus hurting Dwyer’s draft status along with the whole drug test fiasco.
