Spring (practice) fever!

Greetings, all-

Ken Sugiura subbing for Doug Roberson at spring practice. Some notes and quotes, forthwith:

1) A lot of learning going on with the defense. Anthony Egbuniwe, who was working at outside linebacker in the new 3-4: “(I was) both nervous and excited, but mainly excited. I’m just ready to see what we can do as a defense. A lot of people are doubting us because we had a lot of people leave us, but I just see it as a better oppportunity for us to show what we can do.”

2) Among other position switches. Dominique Reese is working at corner, Jerrard Tarrant at safety. Didn’t get to talk to Tarrant. Reese, who came in as a corner, said coach Al Groh “felt like I had good hips.”

3) The offense did a little bit of work out of the shotgun. I saw it in some 1-on-1 passing drills.

4) Quarterbacks looked a little shaky in passing drills, as did receivers.

5) Anthony Allen at B-back, as was grayshirt freshman Charles Perkins, wearing Jonathan Dwyer’s No. 21. Perkins looked smooth, if a little slight. Allen on moving to B-back from A-back: “It’s basically getting the ball and running with it. It’s a pretty easy job when you’ve played running back all your life.”

Not rocket science, evidently.

6) First-team offense, tackle to tackle: Nick Claytor, Nick McRae, Sean Bedford, Omoregie Uzzi, Zach Krish. Austin Barrick was in class.

Perkins looked “a little slight”?? We were told he was about 210-215. Do you think he looked slight compared to Allen or compared to all the running backs?

I am a Tech grad of ‘73. I, too, was shocked to see “shotgun”. That would force Nesbitt to pass, something he quit doing in mid-late season last year, electing to keep it, not even handing it off to Dwyer also around late season. So we know why he quit handing it off to Dwyer. Dwyer kept playing tricks on him like putting shaving cream in his shoes. Maybe there was a reason he quit passing to Thomas. Anyway, we don’t care about bringing off the field problems onto the field at game time. Also, unless Tech feels they have some potential Dick Butkus Award contenders, I think it was a mistake swithching to more linebackers than linemen. Tech never has had much linebacking. One or at the most two good linebackers on a defensive team. The very best defense Tech ever had was the Tenuta defenses with the blitzes of the small guys finding holes between linemen and rushing in for sacks. You gotta blitz because the caliber of college teams Tech plays will pass on first down without hesitation. FSU would pass on every down. Most schools we play would not. Linebackers are too slow to blitz.

Someone can correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t Perkins an early enrollee true freshman? I’m pretty sure he’s not a grayshirt, as grayshirts in last year’s recruiting class wouldn’t be on campus until January of next year.

It is only the first day of spring ball but the continuation of the Paul Johnson era on the Flats opens with a few wrinkles from his OC days at Hawaii. Looks like there will be lots of changes with personnel on the defensive side of the ball. Let the competition begin.

I will bet Sugiura is wrong about Tech working out of the shotgun. He probably misunderstood what he was watching. Johnson has his offense, and it’s not going to change much, if at all.

@ charles – perkins was the first committ of 2010 so i don’t know why they labled him a grayshirt. What do they consider slight for an early enrollee freshman who still should be in high school!!!

No Max, he is not misunderstood.

CPJ ran the shotgun sparingly while at GA Southern and while at Hawaii.

A couple of insiders at practiced also confirmed this during the 1-1 drills and the 7-7 drills.

Exciting really. As if opposing DC’s needed anything else to worry about.

Don’t forget that CPJ also taught Urban the basics of his offense when Meyer was still developing it at Utah. CPJ knows how to do it out of the shotgun. He’s also a damn smart coach. If he has to stand on his head the whole game to get 14 wins, I guaran-damn-tee you he’ll do it!

I personally think the shotgun will be used in 2 minute situations.Remember UGA last year? If we ran a shotgun I bet #9 would have had a few more moments to make a more accurate throw.

What Tech has never had is real solid down linemen on the defensive side. Tech has had plenty of quality linebackers. Go check the NFL rosters.

Anymore details on that 10 game suspension? Where are all those top flight AJC investigative journalists when you need them? They’re coming out of the woodwork when those “thugs” at UGA get a “scooter ticket” or an underage drinking charge.

Keyaron Fox, Daryl Smith, Gerris Wilkinson, Nick Rogers, Gary Guyton, Phillip Wheeler are all LBs from Tech who have played in the NFL this decade. Another guy named Keith Brooking played at Tech at the end of the 90s, you may have heard of him. Tech has actually had a lot of good linebackers in recent years; D-linemen have been much more scant…the move to 3-4 makes sense.

Anybody remember Recardo Wimbush? I don’t know how he never made it to the NFL…that guy was nasty.

I have heard rumors that Drummond got caught for steroids, which isn’t too surprising given his huge size and history in power lifting.

Hello, all-
to answer some questions – Charles Perkins is a grayshirt. I’d say he looked slight compared to the other backs.
As for the shotgun, here’s what I saw. You can decide for yourself. It was a one-on-one pass drill. Quarterbacks were lined up maybe four yards behind the line of scrimmage, and an assistant pitched the ball underhanded to the quarterback, who went into his drop to pass.

Looking back at how I read it, I apologize for wording it poorly. It wasn’t in 11 on 11, but, the fact that they were spending time on it at all says something. (For the sake of context, I’ve seen them do plenty of 1 on 1 pass drills where the quarterback was lined up on the line of scrimmage taking a “snap” from the assistant, so this was clearly something different.)

Ken you are spreading false information about perkins he is not a gray shirt, never was and he never will be… you need to go talk to some one who knows each player in the 2010 class!!!!!

March 30th, 2010
5:24 pm

I’m also pretty sure that you’re wrong about the Grayshirt thing, Ken. A Grayshirt is a student who enrolls and joins the teams a semester late whereas Perkins enrolled a semester early. Both a Grayshirts and early enrollees join the team in the Spring… the difference is that early enrollee finished up High School early to begin College. If I’m not mistaken though, early enrollees can also be referred to as Greenshirts, which may be what you’re thinking of?

If a kid was a gray shirt his scholarship would not count against the 2010 class numbers, but it would be held over for the 2011 class!!!!!!

Perkins will probably redshirt this yr & bulk up a little bit. He may not have been a top notch recruit according to the recruiting services, but trust me he can play. I went to Collins Hill (I graduated when he was a Freshman), but I watched him play last yr. He was the entire offense. The only offense they had was handing off to him.

Ken – Really? A grayshirt? How are we supposed to trust you as a so-called journalist if you get called out for being wrong, yet still insist you are right. Perkins was one of the best backs in the state in HS last year. You blew a lot of credibility by not knowing who he is, especially if you are writing a GT article. He’s going to be our RB of the future, maybe you should invest some time in knowing who our top recruits actually are.
