OK folks, y’all asked a lot of great questions. I hope the answers are as satisfying. Either way, it’s something to tide you over until 7 p.m. tonight when the basketball team takes on North Carolina in the first round of the ACC tournament.
These are real questions from (I hope) real people.
Let me preface by saying that some of these answers are my opinions, some is stuff I’ve been told by coach Paul Johnson, and some is just guesswork.
Depth charts haven’t been released yet, so questions about specific positions, specifically on defense, are my guesswork.
Here we go:
Q: Who do you see fulfilling the different LB roles in the new 3-4 defense?
A: Good question. I can see Brad Jefferson and Julian Burnett (not Peterson as he was called by the questioner) in the middle linebacker spots, with the outside linebacker spots featuring a competition between Steven Sylvester, Malcolm Munroe, Brandon Watts and Albert Rocker. Kyle Jackson is a wildcard after missing last season with his broken foot. If he comes back and looks good, I can see Burnett sliding over to outside linebacker, which is his more natural position, even if he doesn’t fit new defensive coordinator Al Groh’s physical guidelines.
Q: There’s some messageboard chatter about Daniel Drummond and his 2010 status. Can you enlighten us?
A: Drummond is on the spring roster.
Q: Any status on J.C. Lanier? I know he was injured at some point last year and he took a redshirt, but I was hoping to hear about the possibility of him contending for the nose tackle spot.
A: I believe he is still rehabbing the shoulder he injured last season, but I think he will be at spring practice. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him get snaps at nose tackle.
Q: With the recent departure of [Jaybo] Shaw from the back up role at QB. Who do you seeing filling in?
A: This is going to be one of the interesting things to watch in the spring. Tevin Washington should be No. 2, with Jordan Luallen and David Sims pushing for time. Don’t forget that Quentin Sims played some QB last year, and early enrollee B.J. Bostic could end up there, as well. And, of course, there’s signee Synjyn Days, who has the size, speed and experience in the offense in high school. He will be at Tech this summer.
Q: There is a rumor out that PJ may be considering installing some shotgun in his offensive package? Although I find this hard to believe, I thought I would ask about this.
A: Doubt it. I half-joked about this with him last season. First time I made him laugh. But, who knows? Imagine a scenario next season in which Tech has the ball, a small lead and the opponent has a three timeouts left. If Tech lined up in its usual formation and then switched to the shotgun, I could see the other team panicking and burning a timeout. But, that’s just my silly little theory that would probably wouldn’t work
Q: Will B.J. Bostic start out on offense or defense in the spring?
A: I don’t think he’s been penciled in anywhere yet. I could see him at a variety of places until the coaches figure out where he fits best.
Q: Who would you pick right now to be the offensive and defensive surprises (positive surprises) in the spring?
A: On offense, I would say Chris Jackson, the transfer from Alabama. On defense, I would say Jemea Thomas at safety.
Q: Any talk of Tech trying to balance out their schedule?
A: Not likely, at least within the conference. It’s out of Tech’s hands. They hoped that Georgia would agree to playing in the Dome, and then resuming in Athens, but the Bulldogs declined. That would have switched Georgia off a home rotation that has included Clemson and Virginia Tech every other year.
Q: Who do we anticipate starting at A-Backs this year?
A: R oddy Jones and Embry Peeples (he was Tech’s second leading receiver last year).
Q: Who is most likely to find themselves starting on the offensive line come the Spring Game?
A: From left to right: Phil Smith, Nick Claytor, Sean Bedford, Omoregie Uzzi and Austin Barrick. But that’s just a guess. Will Jackson could be in there. Ray Beno could be in there, Chase Hudson could be in there, Zach Fraysier…competition will be deep.
Q: What is the health status of Ben Anderson, Kyle Jackson, Phil Smith, JC Lanier and Chris Jackson? Will any of them participate in spring practice?
A: Anderson won’t. Jackson might. Smith should. Lanier should. Jackson will (I believe).
Q: What weight is David Sims? Is he a viable candidate to become the second string QB?
A: No idea. Honestly, the weight question is one I hear more than any other and I’ve never understood the importance, except in a couple of circumstances.
Q: If a team has 4-5 weeks prior to a bowl game to prepare for Tech’s spread option, what do you think CPJ can do to add a wrinkle that will be enough of a change to counter that defensive preparation? Or will he always rely on matchups and athleticism to win in the trenches?
A: The last two defensive lines Tech faced in bowl games featured multiple NFL players. Tech’s offense, I believe, is much more about timing than smashmouthing (made that up). When you don’t play for a few weeks, things get thrown off. And yes on matchups and athleticism. That ability to get to the defense’s second- and third-levels helps the offense do what it do.
Q: Why does Coach Johnson feel the 3-4 will be a more effective defense on the flats than the traditional 4-3?
A: I don’t think he gives a hoot which system is run, as long as the people running it understand what to do when things are going wrong.
Q: How fast will Anthony Allen be able to pick up that chemistry when he (most likely) moves to b-back this season?
A: Don’t think it will be an issue, but it will be interesting with a few quarterbacks taking more snaps than they probably would have before Nesbitt’s surgery and Shaw’s transfer. Don’t be surprised if you see a few fumbles.
Q: What has Groh done so far to evaluate players and what will his process be for doing so once spring practice starts. What expectations does he have for players by the end of spring practice (e.g. how much of a depth chart will be in place, how much will they understand about the defense, how much will they know v. where he expects them to be by the first game).
A: No idea on this one. Hope to come back to it soon.
Q: What is the fix to the evident problem against bigger D-lines?
A: A bigger o-line?
Q: Have Joseph Gilbert and Clyde Yandell officially transferred out of the program?
A: Tech hasn’t officially announced anything. Yandell wrote a letter to fans explaining why he was leaving (to pursue grad school opportunities). The same is true for Gilbert, but it hasn’t been officially announced.
Q: I trust Nesbitt to continue working on his accuracy, but are the backs expected to improve their catching this season?
A: I would think everyone is expected to catch catchable passes. Sometimes mistakes happen.
Q: Who are the most promising redshirt freshmen to watch this spring?
A: Good question. I would look for linemen on both sides to push for time, including Emmanuel Dieke, J.C. Lanier, Will Jackson and Ray Beno, to name a few.
Q: Who will coach the special teams this year?
A: Hope to find that one out soon.
Q: Will Coach Speed coach all four linebacker positions or will Coach Groh coach the outside linebackers himself?
A: Speed will coach inside linebackers, Groh the outside.
Q: What do you think the passing game will be like without Bay-Bay?
A: I think it may be more balanced than last year, when Thomas caught 59 percent of the passes. Whether it will have the same big-play capability will be something to watch. Thomas was so strong and fast that he was often able to hold off defenders as he ran down the field. There’s not a wide receiver on the roster that can do that this season.
Q: Where is transfer Chris Jackson projected to play? A-back or WR?
A: A-back, I hear.
Q: Of the 18 or so players that Tech signed this year, how many of them will redshirt?
A: Really too early to say. But, I would bet more than half will.
Q: Will Cooper Taylor be on the field this spring after dealing with his heart issue?
A: He’s good to go.
Q: How many scholarship seniors are projected to be on this year’s team?
A: A rough count of 20 or so.
Q: Have they hired a new strength and conditioning coach yet? If so, who?
A: Neal Peduzzi is doing the job right now. Don’t know if he’s got the gig full-time yet.
Q: Does Al Groh plan on flip flopping his DEs and CBs in his base 3-4 packages?
A: If he did it at Virginia, I can see him doing it at Tech.
Q: We’ve heard a lot about NT, who are the top candidates to start at tackle in the 3-4?
A: This will be an interesting competition between Anthony Egbuniwe, Emmanuel Dieke, Jason Peters, Osahon Tongo, Logan Walls and Ben Anderson to name a few. I wish I could provide more insight into this one, but I think it’s going to be wide open for a reason.
Q: Which freshmen are more likely to play this season and skip redshirt?
A: Charles Perkins, an early enrollee, is being talked up at B-back. I could see the two cornerbacks, Louis Young and Ryan Ayers, on the field, as well. Oh, and kicker Justin Moore could get some chances.
Q: Will we ever install pass plays that are short to medium range (5 – 15 yards) out in the flat or over the middle?
A: There were a few last year. I wouldn’t ever count on seeing too many 5-yard pass plays. Johnson has said if he wants 5 yards he’ll just run the ball.
Q: What do you think CPJ’s top 5 goals will be for this upcoming season?
A: He leaves that up to the team each season. I could see something like: defend the ACC championship, win every home game, win a bowl game, etc.
Q: Does Coach Johnson consider 2010 to be a rebuilding year, considering the loss of 3 key players on offense?
A: I would be stunned if he ever said anything close to that. He said he expects to win every game he plays.
Q: Do you know what kind of recruiting class that Tech is going to land this year?
A: Bookmark this page and check early and often: http://blogs.ajc.com/recruiting/

Any word on recruit Quan Bray? Read Chip (UGA) Towers blog entry about the young man and he didn’t mention anything about Bray’s interest in Tech. That goes against everything I’ve read about the young man up to this point,

People who ask about changes to the offense, whether it’s a shotgun, short- to medium-range passes, a bigger o-line, or a few wrinkles for a bowl game, still don’t get it. Johnson has a plan and he’s going to stick with it, come hell or high water.

Quin Bray: Please follow recruiting on Chip’s blog. I usually take a 10K-foot view until we get closer to Signing Day.
Drummond: As I said, he’s on Tech’s spring roster, same as every other player.
Worm: If they were laughing….free play!
Wesley: If I asked SID Dean Buchan for some of Johnson’s or Groh’s time, he would see what he could do. However, it’s not really common just to walk over and poke your head into their office during the offseason. During the season reporters talk to Johnson almost every day, and Groh is available most days.

I think your answer regarding DT’s was meant to be DE’s, since in a 3-4 you have a NT, 2 DE’s, 2 OLB’s and 2 ILB’s.
The most interesting thing about spring practice will be how Groh fits the personel into the DE and OLB spots.
I wonder which of our many DE’s are capable of converting to OLB.

It was rumored that Drummond had done something to catch flak from CPJ or even the NCAA. Rivals had a report up last Friday briefly that a b back had tested positive for a banned substance (read steroids). They have since taken it down but that’s probably where it all stems from. If it’s true though it could be that the article was taken down for privacy concerns (read lawsuit) but I believe the NCAA rules state that a mandatory 1 yr suspension is in hand for any athlete caught and they also lose a year of elgibility.

Bob, you are correct on the penalties for any student-athlete who violates the NCAA’s substance abuse policy. First offense results in a one-year ban. Second offense results in loss of all eligibility. Student-athletes can appeal, and something like 2-3 percent of all appeals are overturned. The NCAA takes it seriously, as do the schools. At Tech, for example, there are brochures and flyers in various sports to educate the students on what they can and can’t do.

Great job with this Q&A blog Doug. I thought the questions asked were great and your answers were very informative. Wouldn’t mind seeing future blogs in this format.
Another question I thought of after reading the Q&As would be regarding Cooper Taylor. Did the NCAA grant him a medical redshirt for last season? It would be great if he still had 3 years of eligibility remaining.

Doug,
Thoughts on Dwyer’s combine and falling out of Kiper’s top 5 at RB for the draft? He was relatively slow in the 40, but he still has great film supporting his case as an every down back in the league. Also, from what I watched his abilty to catch the pass was at least average, not horrendous as some combines report stated.

Cooper’s redshirt application has been entered. I don’t believe anything’s been decided.
I think the combine is nice as entertainment, but that’s about it. If a dude can play, he can play. The only one of the tests that I think it valid at the combine is the bench press, and that goes back to the Aundray Bruce disaster the Falcons experienced.
Dwyer can play. There are smart teams that can see that.
Don’t shudder as you read this, Knowshon Moreno ran a slow 40 time last year at the combine, as well. He went in the first round.

the 2nd leading rushing team is not that impressive when you run every play. most stats are misleading anyways.
his ability to coach? haha he runs only 6 plays and one is a play where he has the qb stand up there and shout hut hut hut..hut hut trying to draw the defense offside. his whole offense is based on hoping the the other teams defense makes a mistake reading the play. his offensive line is too small to really block anyone. they might get in the way sometimes but blocking they are weak at. pj coaching ability is deciding either to go for it on fourth down or punt it…he never even played football so i dont expect much from him anyways. i will give him credit for being a ass chewer though..a good one at that

if your team runs an offense like techs it does but lets say an offense like uga runs you actaully have players beating the defensive players you have offensive plays that can cause a match up problem for other teams defenses. techs offense does not have that now that bey bey is gone. when a offense has to try and hide the ball from the defense in order for the play to work then you know your team has lees talent than the one your playing. now that most of the talented gailys players are gone this offensive will have big time trouble.

My question was answered almost in jest. Of course I’ve thought of a larger O-line…but will that ever happen? I doubt it from what I’ve heard. Apparently he thinks size equals slow lateral moves and thus poorer blocking.
My real question was ASIDE from getting larger guys on O-line what does CPJ do if we need to go up against another big D-line? He has to have SOME philosophy or strategy for that…at least now after the pair of bowl defeats.

Next year the defense improves, we won the ACC on one leg last year. We will be better next year. The year we lose Josh is the one that concerns me, but maybe there will be a new QB coming up the ranks. In every offense CPJ has coached he has found the right QB.

Oh yeah…
Try not to get pants’d @ home when ranked in Top 10 by the worst team UGA has fielded in years and after I spent all year cruising off that 3 point “mauling” we administered in 08′ and having my delusional fan base really drinking the koolaid that “the tide has turned” and that my vaunted O was unstoppable (cept I forgot there are two sides of the ball you have to play in this game) and we got embarressed by a team that beat us at our own game. 380+ yards rushing and out coached by a D-coordinator that got fired just days later. Ouch!!!

All of the comments before 3 o’clock were constructive comments by mostly tech fans, and then once all the punk uga fans got home from HS, this message board turned south…

JB, why don’t you talk about the UGAG professor who murdered his wife in front of his own children and in a public place, or the UGAG employee who attempted to extort UGAG students, or the UGAG recruits who had their offers rescinded because of illegal activities, or the UGAG QB arrested for underage drinking, a fake ID, and resisting arrest. Athens is such a lovely place—–for murderers, extortionist, and drunks.

the truth hurts these lame tech fans. im just pointing out that your team is no where as good as you guys think and i gave you reasons why. you can get mad at me and make up these funny lame post about erections but they will never be as funny as watching a bunch nerdy tech fans breaking there glasses and pocket protecters, and smashing there slide ruler when uga yet again runs all over tech and those same nerds cant understand why. haha..=) your team is almost filled with div 1aa players that should be playing at ga southern and you have a coach who has never played big boy football in his life thus the simple high school offense that he runs with all of 6 plays. you guys will be begging for gaily to come back when pj players start losing by 20 points or more to the better teams in college football that actually have div 1a players. so get used to these type post from bulldogs fans.

Doug – I realize that CPJ is of the opinion that if he wants 5 yards he’ll run the ball. The point I’m trying to make – and I think others as well, is that there is no element of surprise in the passing game part of our offense. It’s the bomb or nothing. There has to be something other than the 40 – 50 yard passes to mix in with the offensive scheme and I offered the example of 5 – 15 yard slants over the middle and in the flats. They have the greater possibility of a higher percentage completion rate and the distinct possibility of a lot more yards after completion with quick WR’s like Hill catching the ball. When the other team can just sit back and wait for a WR to go long – the odds of a completion are not that great – of course the exception having been Bay Bay – but he’s gone now and we’ve got to adjust or lose the passing game all together. Also, given the fact that Nesbitt is not known to be the most accurate passing QB and that Bay Bay made many spectacular receptions in spite of poorly thrown balls – shorter passes and higher percentage of completions translate into more confidence for when he does throw the long ball.

oldtimer has a point there doug. i think cpj has no clue how to draw up pass plays since he didnt even play football. if he added a few 5-10 yrd passing plays that would mean he would have to carry a playbook and we all know he doesnt like to let go of his man boobs except to pull and jerk a players facemask.

Hopefully Spring practice will answer a few questions but mostly it just should just set up the players for their workouts, prep, and reps leading up to Fall, I would think. I’ve never been a believer in recruit-stalking since there is so little consistency and reliability in predicting the success or role of a child on a man’s team. I know CPJ’s offense may result in some non-traditional recruit types, but overall I do hope recent success can lure some bigger, faster O-linemen and D-linemen to Tech. We may rely more on technique than smashmouth, but it’s good to be able to do both, obviously.

Much has been said and ridiculed about Tech’s ticket marketing and promos by the dog butt-sniffers and CCCC (Clarke County Cracker Clan). Frankly, I have been annoyed at some of the in-game promos that are an unnecessary distraction and don’t attract anyone new to the games, myself. But offering free food (which all the pro sports teams do now in one form or another) and different game combo packages are fine and a product of the times. The pendulum always swings, and life is cyclical, so one of these days I can see UGA offering free dog-painting and animal husbandry services for the coeds and trailer-trash mommies who attend the games at Sanford.

And no, we haven’t forgotten about Radakovich’s decision to keep paying Hewitt to finish in the middle to lower-tier of the ACC each season. Of course we know that they are counting on Tech Football to take the heat off the basketball program and the athletic director during Spring Practice. (Notice, no pressers, public appearances or announcements since last week’s farce?) Baseball’s success is counted on to deflect more criticism after that. We haven’t forgotten, D-Rad. You were wrong to underestimate fans and wrong to keep Hewitt. If you correct your mistakes soon, you won’t lose a bit of support from the Tech faithful who thought highly of you before this. If you don’t you might lose a lot more. Don’t let your ambition to complete the renovation get in the way of firing the coach who will continue to lose revenue and ticket sales in AMC, renovated or not.

……….D-Rad, you know that when fans first walk into the newly renovated AMC they will probably say “ohh, ahhhh, nice.” But then Hewitt’s team will take the floor and no one will be noticing the new Radakovich Renovation of AMC anymore. They will only make a note to not come back to be disappointed again, like they have been for five years and counting.
