Shaw nervous and excited about leaving Tech for Ga. Southern
Jaybo Shaw has always wanted to be a teacher and coach, like his dad, Lee, the head coach at Flowery Branch High School.
And if he happens to one day replicate what his most recent coach has experienced, well, he says that’d be fine too.
“If I could win the ACC and have the success that coach Johnson has had I’d be happy with that,” Shaw said.
Shaw, who confirmed on Monday that he was transferring from Georgia Tech to Georgia Southern, said he is leaving because he wants to earn a degree in education, something Tech doesn’t offer.
Tech and Georgia State tried to work out a joint program that would help him one day become a teacher. But it didn’t work out. So he decided that he would be happier if he could get a degree in his chosen field.
“I’ve always been around football,” Shaw said. “I’ve known I wanted to be a coach since I started playing sports.”
Once he made his decision he only told a few people, but word got out two weeks ago.
He didn’t confirm it then because Johnson was out of town at a coaching clinic.
Once Johnson returned, Shaw said they talked and Johnson granted him his release.
Shaw then spoke to new Eagles’ coach Jeff Monken, a former Tech assistant who will install the same spread-option offense in Statesboro.
He’s in the process of applying to Georgia Southern and wants to get down there by the summer so that he can get to know his new team.
Shaw will have two years of eligibility remaining. He played a lot as a freshman in 2008, passing for 321 yards and rushing for 200. But a broken collarbone sustained during August set him back last season and his playing time was reduced to a few snaps.
He said he’s not worried that the Jackets will be without him and starter Josh Nesbitt (ankle surgery) once spring practice starts on March 29.
“They’ve got a lot of talent with Tevin [Washington] and David [Sims] and Jordan [Luallen],” Shaw said. “They’re good enough players that they are going to succeed.”

On a brighter note, he is definitely in for a much more enjoyable college experience…lots of good looking women! His biggest adjustment will probably be getting used to not playing on Thursday night and the larger crowds!

Olddawg, I am always amazed that you dumbarses think that Atlanta, GA is devoid of good looking women. Just because dawgs are afraid to leave campus don’t project that to normal college students. Buckhead has been a great place to party since the early 70’s and still has some of the best looking women in the the world. I you can’t get any in ATL, I guess you really should be in Athens.

The only place I saw T. Washington was in the T-Day game last year. He looked like he had a stronger arm and was more mobile than Jaybo. The QB’s that were redshirted last year were recruited by CPJ because they had experience running the TO.

Monken should have encouraged Jaybo to stay even if it was Jaybo’s idea to leave and I doubt that it was. The reason this didn’t happen earlier is because there was a possibility of Shaw being able to become a teacher through a joint program between Tech and State. I think that was what he was counting on, if he wasn’t able to be a star QB at tech. Since neither of those two worked out for him, I think it was a smart decision for him to transfer, get the career path he really wanted, and be able to be a star QB for Southern for 2 years as well.

Knowing that the Broken Ankle offense requires major bodily scarifice for the Qbs, the rest of the tech QBs are thinking ……”gulp, we are next.” They too are looking at GSU or Millsaps or Samford, where they were all originally recruited.
The BONE was dumped in the 70s because it kills the QBs. Josh Nesbitt will be fine until he takes a roll to his left and then pow. That ankle will be painful and of course, the knee. He will not have that cast of characters surrounding him and he will try to do more running, which will lead to more POWS ……….and so it will go. 7-5 or 6 -6 for the Yeckets.

What exactly did Monken do? You can believe what you want, but Shaw said they didn’t speak until after he was granted his release. Monken didn’t return phone calls last week, and ga. southern officials can not speak about Shaw until he’s admitted to their university.

Hope he does well. Always liked Jaybo. You can get a teaching degree at Tech, it’s just in conjunction with a Georgia State program, which has been shown to be a pain in the neck. Tech will never offer an major in Education because it would bring the average income of graduates down, which looks bad nationally. Alos, there is one Jaybo for every 30 engineers. Meaning, the investment in a GT “College of Education” would have a horrible ROI. Shaw will be able to get an education degree at GSU much easier than at Tech. I wish him luck, he is a helluva ball player and a class act all the way.

Having said that, you do know that to teach in the state of Georgia all you need is an undergraduate degree in a qualifying field (GT’s Management Program MORE than qualifies). Then you take the 4 or 5 “education” courses and get your certification while you’re teaching/coaching (you used to actually have 5 years to accompolish this…not sure what is now). Not as easy a route as getting an education degree from GSU, but then again you could’ve done so much more with a Management degree from Tech.
REGARDLESS, I love your effort, your heart, and your passion for football in general. One of my four degrees is from Georgia Southern and I consider myself an Eagle….so, JUST ONE MORE TIME BABY!!!!!!

Say what you want Oz, the only other school seriously recruiting Jaybo was Middle TN State. Yech didn’t even look at him – no letters of interest, nothing – until CPJ showed up. It was a last second decision and you know it. So don’t go acting like the second coming of Joe Hamilton has left the building. He’s seen the writing on the wall. Nesbit is THE man for now and there’s more talent waiting in the wings. I wish him luck in getting his education degree and starting his teaching\coaching career. His Dad is a good man and JBo would do well to follow in his footsteps.

Shaw and GT were trying to work out a plan where he could get the courses he needed for an education degree at Georgia State and remain at Tech. That did not work out and with two years left he decided it would be best to transfer. As far as leaving Tech so he can get into a passing offense, well GSU will be running the same offense as Tech. Of all the dawgs that love posting about a Tech article less the .5% have any sense at all.
PS – they more than likely did not attend any university and barely got that GED.

It never ceases to amaze me at the rants & raves of Dawg fans. They whole-heartedly believe in downgrading anyone who doesn’t play at UGA. Most of these posters have never set foot in a classroom at UGA. It tells! They are the most disrepectful people I have read. But, an education is what most of them need. Remember the Golden Rule Dawg fans.
Jaybo will do just fine at Georgia Southern and when he graduates he will have a job teaching and coaching young men & women. He will have an impact on their lives. Hopefully, he will convince them that an education in one of the State of Georgia universities is best for their future.

It is good to get our identity back, even if stained yellow. Even though we seem to be striving to become NATS-South, Shaw will allow us to develop our O much more quickly and efficiently. Yech can send Monken back, and we’d love PJ back, but keep Sewak. I hope and pray that we not hire a Yech asst if Hennon leaves. Grube, Sam, and John are way too far up Yech’s butt, and yet they still insult us and our program more than UGA folks do. No matter, though, because no one could do worse than BVG. And no one will ever surpass Erk at GSU. I live the irony when a Yechie mentions GATA.

Johnson owed it to Jaybo not to give him a hard time about transferring. Jaybo came in as a true Freshman & stepped in when Nesbitt went down with his ankle and led the Jackets to victory. Jaybo breaks his collarbone last year & instead of Johnson holding Jaybo back for a possible medical redshirt, he puts Jaybo on special and allows him to take a few snaps.
Jaybo will be asset to Ga Southern. I wish him well.

Steve Alford – I can read – and what I’m reading is a bunch of crap from a punk backup qb. All he talked about was beating Georgia, and then he $hit the bed two years in a row against UGA. And don’t give the bunch of baloney about the education major being the reason he’s transferring – you can be a teacher with any degree – Jaybo was free-falling on the depth chart so he’s tucking tail and hauling butt.

Jaybo may come in and have the starting job because of our situation. There was a time when he would have had a better chance against Nesbit than some of our former QB’s. Im glad we can at least get a guy with a good head on his shoulders that has experience running the TO. We do have a couple of incoming freshman that Monken signed that look pretty impressive that may give Jbo a run for his money.

Good Luck, Jaybo, and Georgia Tech may miss you more than most fans realize. There will be a huge drop off from Josh to the new #2, whoever that may be, in terms of talent and experience. Hopefully, as next year may be a rebuilding year, the backups will get more snaps than in the previous two years. The importance of timing and rapid reads in CPJ’s system makes it even more imperative.

Those who make snide remarks about Shaw transferring fall into two camps: the Tech fans who sound like jilted lovers and the UGA fans who are just happy to have any kind of distraction from their own program’s problems. To be sure, the “education-degree” excuse sounds disingenuous–you can essentially teach with any bachelor’s degree in Georgia with the addition of a few education classes–but it is frankly none of our business why this young man wants to transfer. College football fans who have nothing better to do in March (!?!) than to obsess over players’ personal lives really need to get lives themselves. It sounds like a great opportunity for Shaw to play in his kind of offense with a familiar coach (Moncken) at a good school. And education degrees are a heckuva lot easier to get than the kind of degrees Georgia Tech offers.

I know I was still drifting on an undecided major at 20 and had no real plan. I only have good wishes for Mr. Shaw and his family. I don’t really care about any underlying reason and respect his decision, after all it is his own life. I suspect many of the posters on here were slinging hash or worse at age 20 and never passed through the arch with the exception of tailgating on game days when they received unwanted tickets from the boss to the SW Louisiana State game.
These kids aren’t pros people, some of them actually know they will not be pros and plan for life after college, many of them do not. There are too many from both schools that don’t graduate, don’t make it in the pros, and now assist you in recycling. Encourage all of them to get a degree they can use later.

Jaybo, you are going to love it in Statesboro. There is nothing like it on gameday. When you ride to the stadium on Saturday and the boys on the bus begin to sing. Then you pull up to gates with the horns honking, and fans lined up to get you pumped. Then just before the game, Freedom takes flight.
Some think our fans are too critical on the message boards. But what if there were no postings on that board? Some schools message boards are not as active as GSU. It is really only because our fans are so passionate, and they love Georgia Southern Football.
And then someday you will understand when you leave, what they mean by those “Statesboro Blues.”

The only thing UGA has going for it is it’s Vet. hospital. We took a sick bird there this week. The town streets are as nasty as the the campus on game day. The streets also stinks. How in the world can you be so critical of Ga. Tech. Look out your back door at the filth. This high school offense beat your butts year before last, and for one dropped pass would have done it again last year. Maybe you will beat Tech and Fla. in the same year. Not!!!!!

Here’s hoping things work out for Jaybo in the ‘Boro. Hopefully there will be a teaching job or two left in the state in a couple of years. Enjoy the laid back atmosphere and the exceptional quality and concentration of hotties on campus. REUBEN HOUSTON was NEVER ordered by the Court to have to play against The Georgia Bulldogs in 2005. But, on the 1st opportunity to put Reuben Houston into the game, Georgia tek certainly ceased the moment and played him against UGA. Played and played and played Reuben Houston the whole entire game.
CONVICTED FELON REUBEN HOUSTON, you recall just had granted an interview with the AJ-C, and had ADMITTED that he was in the van with his child on his lap, with the 90 lbs. of drugs ON GEORGIA tek’s campus, leading them to where they could SELL THE 90 LBS. OF DRUGS.
Bryan McClendon a wide receiver, now UGA running backs’ coach, caught the pass from DJ Shockley with 3 minutes to go for UGA to prevail 14-7 ANYWAY.
LAST NIGHT REUBEN HOUSTON is AGAIN sought on FELONY CHARGES. This time taking a gun to his neighbor’s house and holding them at bay for 5 minutes over the same child he had on his lap before jumping from the van to elude Georgia tek campus police, GBI, Georgia State patrol and Fulton County Sheriff’s office in hot pursuit.
It seems there was a dispute among kids, and therefore Reuben Houston went over to square the situation with that child and his family.
CONVICTED FELONS are NOT ALLOWED TO CARRY A GUN.

Trust me, Jaybo went to Tech the same reason his little brother is going to South Carolina; to play against UGA. For some reason, the Shaw family has a serious chip on its shoulder about UGA. This is fact.
