Hewitt tweets about fans, critics — updated at 12:29 p.m.

Georgia Tech men’s basketball coach Paul Hewitt approved a series of tweets from GTCoachHewitt on Wednesday to fans and  those who have questioned his team:

  • Clearly we are playing our best basketball of the season. Don’t believe what you read from the “experts.” Believe what you see.
  • As we are coming to the latter part of the season, now is not the time to be judgemental. You all need to come out and support this team.
  • Are you a critic or a supporter of this team? Supporters will continue to watch this team fight.
  • To you critics: when athletes say some of the things you say, then you condemn them as quitters. Are you quitting?
  • I believe in this team!

The tweets have divided fans on twitter and various message boards, with some saying they have no problem with him asking for support, and others saying it’s odd that a coach that they say is underperforming would take arguments with “critics” and fans public.

Examples:

  • “I like you, Paul, but teams are judged on wins & losses. That’s why we keep score. This team has lost too many winnable games.”
  • “supporter until the end!!!”

With what many analysts and opposing coaches say is the best frontcourt talent in the ACC, the Yellow Jackets are 18-9, 6-7 this season, which puts them seventh in the ACC this season. Depending upon which NCAA tournament blog you read, they will either safely make the field of 65 for the first time since 2007, or they are on the bubble. The team is 1-6 on the road in the conference this season, including last week’s last-second 76-74 loss to Maryland. After hosting Boston College on Saturday, the team will play at Clemson and will host Virginia Tech as it tries to secure its spot in the NCAAs. The ACC tournament starts March 11 in Greensboro.

Hewitt is 172-140 in 10 seasons at Tech, including 67-89 in the conference and 6-5 in the NCAAs. His salary is $1.375 million a year, with a buyout of close to $7 million that rolls over every year.

I hope to ask Coach Hewitt if he can discuss these tweets some more at today’s media session. Please come back later this afternoon for more.

Here’s a link to Hewitt’s twitter account: http://twitter.com/GTCoachHewitt and you can follow the AJC’s coverage of Georgia Tech on twitter @ajcgatech

quit tweeting and design an effective in-bounds play, some offensive plays, and hire a shooting instructor for free throws.

I like the fact the a coach has dialog with the fans. I’ll refrain from commenting the specific “tweets” mentioned in this blog. No point in beating a dead horse.

Seriously — any coach who spends this much time and effort addressing his critics at this time of the year is showing poor time management skills.
Then again, anyone who has seen how few timeouts Georgia Tech has had at the end of games in crucial situations has had plenty of evidence of how poor clock and time management have been in the last 10 years, a 10-year stretch that has included four losing seasons and 0 appearances in so much as the ACC tournament championship game.
The national championship game was great, but that was a long time ago now.
That Tech, under Hewitt, did not build from that game is an even further indictment of the change needed in the basketball program.

I am a loyal Yellow Jacket and I support the institute. However, I will not rollover and support a lousy, overpaid coach and be called a quitter or not a true fan, or other BS because I know the coaching is bad. Hewitt will never have my support and the AA will not get my money for BB until he is gone.

geez, 2-14 last yr in the ACC and what was the two years before that? If fans are getting restless, it is not based on one season..honestly, I thought when the season ended last yr, I would be at last logging on to the the AJC website waiting for the announcement from GT on the firing that never came. I’m not pointing anymore at CPH, I’m looking at DRAD’s direction.

@ Doug – His salary is not reported to be $1.3M, it IS $1.375M and he has a 5 year roll over, so if he is fired he gets $6.875M. It’s all out there for public consumption as he is technically a state employee.

I don’t mind CPH tweeting anything he likes, but he seems to be getting awfully defensive. I will never quite on my team, but I’m not sold on the coaching. I think his ACC record speaks for itself. Please tell me another coach that has been at a major conference school for 10 years that is 20 games below .500 in conference. Anybody? Hello?

I think Coach Hewitt is telling people that he is hearing the criticism and his players are too. It is hurting the team. I am a huge supporter because I think he is doing all the right things as a coach.

By the way, there is another coach … in the ACC … with a lot of young blue chip players … that is not doing so well this year. His name is Roy Williams. It’s a tough game. I don’t want to make it any tougher.

Looks like he knows it’s put up or shut up time. He obviously thinks this team is going to do something special in the ACC tournament and the NCAA tournament. I’m hopeful he is right. We need to win two in the ACC tourney, and we need to win at least two in the NCAA. Anything short of that and I say he should resign!

Reality Check

February 25th, 2010
12:41 pm

Like this team, do not compare Roy Williams and Paul Hewitt. Roy Williams has won two NC’s at UNC and been to several more final fours at Kansas. He has built up several years of goodwill for UNC fans to cut them some slack. GT has been a perennial dissapointment since their final four several years back. The BB team has been more on the UGA level the last 5 years than not. GT is a mediocre team in a down year for the ACC and that should not be acceptable for most GT fans.

I will support this team. We’re 12-1 at home so most of us have been supporting. My problem is the over-aggressive, lack-of-fundamental defense that leads to constant fouling (usually after we have gained some momentum) lack of guard development since Jack left, too much NBA one-on-one offense, taking a guy out right after he has made a couple of shots, timeout usuage and clock management, unable to adjust to the game tempo (either playing too fast or too slow), and most importantly ONLY 3 CONFERENCE ROAD WINS IN OVER THREE YEARS!

BHam jacket I agree with you 100% . Numbers matter in athletics! Gtech basketball should have at least won 22 games before they entered the ACC tournament. If your child, or someone you supervised came to you with a 55% grade avg or work performance %, what would you do versus someone who has an 70+%? Come on!!, everybody knows the universal grading scale. 55% no matter where you go in the world is an “F” average. 10 yrs, 312 games and 172 wins equal 55% AN “F”. 172 wins divided by 10=17.2 (and counting) 140 losses (and counting) divided by 10=14.0
That averages to a record of about 17-14 per year.

OK real GT fans lets talk reality…Who goes to the ncaa with a 17-14 record? nobody!
WINNING MATTERS..!!!
Stop being scared of that 7 million dollar buyout. Find a coach who consistently wins. That coach will instill winning into the players and program GO GT!!!!

‘Clearly we are playing our best basketball of the season. Don’t believe what you read from the “experts.” Believe what you see.’
For crying out loud, what is he smoking? In the past 7 games they are 3-4, with all 3 of those wins coming against the two last place teams (NC State and UNC). Evn in the wins, they blew a 20 point lead against UNC and won by 2. They blew a 16 point lead against NC St and won by 2. Of the 4 losses, two they were run off the court (Duke and Wake), one was against one of the bottom 3 in the conference (UM) and the 4th was the Maryland game, in which they lost “the best game they played all year” as Blewitt puts it.
How can any intelligent person look at that 7 game stretch and say they are playing the best basketball all year? I do believe what I see and I see an overpaid, underachieving and disillusioned head coach that has lost all sense of reality. Who goes 3-4 with weak wins and claims to be playing good basketball? No one that should be playing in the Big Dance.

Coach Hewitt is doing and has done a tremendous at GT, under the circumstances (nothing to do with academics). You GT negaholics need to face reality and understand where your program actually is in relationship to the landscape. First of all, his team is a freshmen laden team, his best players are freshmen. They are playing like typical freshmen, up and down. The team is improving game by game and over the next couple of years big things could happen. Patience boys.

What is it you expect? You aren’t Kansas, UNC or Kentucky, and you never will be. Hewitt is working at a huge competitive disadvantage. The GT facilities are pitiful. Did you ever get the roof leak at Alexander repaired? You don’t have a practice facility, although you are finally breaking ground on one, it’s a FAR CRY from the original plan proposed. The GT facility will be a building with a court, not what you call a showcase facility versus your competitors. Compare that to what lowly Georgia has, or Kentucky, Florida, Kansas and the elite programs around the country. GT is 5 years behind the curve. You folks keep demanding Caviar and Cristal but you have a Vienna sausage and Natural Light budget, it ain’t happening boys. Adjust your taste. Coach Hewitt has a great agent (Univ of Ga grad) who worked out the fine details of his contract with the former AD, and until you can come up with $6+ million, he’s your man. Before you shell out $6+ million to run him off, you might want to consider spending that money on roof repairs and lockerrooms, important things. Support him, he’s better than you deserve.

Good Lord, CPH gets $1.3 million a year and has to have someone else tweet for him? It’s just typing! No wonder he can’t a) teach in-bounds plays, b) run an offense, c) manage the clock, or d) run a pressing defense. (I’d love to see the stats on how many easy baskets teams have made thanks to that lame press.) And he a) pulls out shooters when they’re hot, b) calls timeouts 2 seconds before a TV timeout and c) follows a rotation schedule instead of substituting on the basis of need or game situation.

Sadly, it’s all on the players to succeed this year. If they make it beyond a one-and-done, it won’t be because of CPH. And, more sadly, there are no signs of change, with that $7 million buyout looming.

CPH is 4-6 vs. UGA during his tenure which has seen the worst time in what already was an, at best, average SEC BB program. 4 different coach’s that included the Harrick mess. BTW, UGA was ranked (#17 in 02/03) only once in the last 10 meetings with GT. GT happened to win that game. This says a lot about this coach.

Although I am frustrated with Mr. Hewitt’s lack of offensive coaching progress, be careful what you wish for. I live in Charlotte and watched NC state run off a semi-successful coach in Herb Sendek to miss out on their first 2 or 3 prospects only to end up with Mr. Lowe. They quickly digressed from a top half of the ACC team to the last place team. My hope is that Mr. Radakovich has a good read on things. Mr. Hewitt had success early, but once the assistants left, he seemed to lose his special touch. I wonder if a forced assistant overhaul is needed if a full removal is not undertaken due to the contract issues.

Facilities?? Are you kidding me? What does facilities have to do with starting the proper players at there proper position? What does facilites have to do with free throws?. What does facilities have to do with letting players play to there strengths? Drawing up better inbound plays Drawing up better offense plays has to do with facilities???!!? Substituting every 2 minutes instead of allowing players to play in rythm is a facilites problem?? Calling premature timeouts during games has to do with facilities?? LOOK winners win Period!!! And if GT were really winning games..Trust me there “facilities” would be takin care of!!! Winning gets you facilties and winning allows you to keep your job. Hewitt records displays he cant win consistently..stop making excuses for the man.

With that type of attitude GT will always be a viena sausage bud light team.

Someone help me here..I thought everybody knew a budget is usually determined by previous work perfomance and statistics. Why would alumni/GT pay for facilities and lose. Hewitt has done enough to receive top notch facilites??? Are you serious? You have to WIN GAMES CONSTSTENTLY. WINS GENERATE MORE MONEY!
THUS WIN GAMES!! Hewitt cant because he hasnt been a consist winner there. Unless your counting the 7 million dollar lottery he hit 10 yrs ago lol!!! Use Kentucky as prime example ..its a big difference there now that Calipari is there..oh yeah Memphis definetly doesnt have top notch “FACILITES” and Yes Kentucky bought out Gillispe..Do you see what a difference a coach makes.!!!

Call me crazy but I believe this team has turned a corner. Ever since the start of the 2nd half vs miami til the present, they have played their best basketball of the season. If not for two buzzer beaters we would be in the top 25 and easily in the tourney. I think CPH has found something with miller, oliver, and rice. Miller starts feeding the post and the real favors has started to really play ball. I am very excited about the rest of the season and look forward to this team finally start to live up to expectations. Please support this team tech fans and worry about the coaching situation after the season.

This team plays like all PH coached teams, like they were on on the school yard. No discipline, no patience, loads of talent but not enough balls to go around. How many more wins would they have if they could shoot free throws at a 80% clip, learn how to inbound the ball against the press or if Lawal knew how to pass the ball back out instead of shoot it with 2 and 3 players ahnging all over him. Simply coaching is almost non-existant and to me that is ground for forcing PH to change his staff or be shown the door. Enough is enough and his record speaks for itself.

How can CPH expect the fans to not be critical when we have a 55% overall winning percentage, 43% ACC winning percentage, consistently in the bottom third of the conference in turnovers and freethrow percentage during his coaching tenure at GT???????

If he thinks this is an acceptable representation of his abilities as a coach; then we all know what has to be done.

Since the Kentucky State game on Jan. 30::: 78 out of 130 free throws for 60% and an average of just over 16 turnovers per game. 2-4 record in the ACC, 0-4 on the road, with the only 2 wins coming at home against terrible NC State (barely won) and UNC teams.
