Shaw has not filed transfer paperwork

Georgia Tech backup quarterback Jaybo Shaw has not filed any paperwork seeking to transfer as of Wednesday, according to a school spokesperson. Tech coach Paul Johnson, who is out of town until next week, has also not signed a release for Shaw.

Should Shaw transfer, the Yellow Jackets will be without their first- and second-string quarterbacks for spring practice, which starts March 29.

Calls to Shaw’s father, Lee, have not been returned.

Shaw, a sophomore from Flowery Branch, missed the first five games last season with a broken collarbone sustained during practice in August. He appeared in six games, rushing for 51 yards.

As a freshman in 2008, Shaw rushed for 200 yards and three touchdowns and passed for 321 yards and two touchdowns.

He was rated the No. 10 dual-threat quarterback in the country at Flowery Branch High School, and was one of Tech coach Paul Johnson’s first commitments when he was hired in December 2007.

Starting quarterback Josh Nesbitt will miss spring practice because of minor surgery on his right ankle.

The absence of Nesbitt and Shaw would mean redshirt freshman Tevin Washington and freshmen Jordan Luallen and David Sims will compete for snaps. Luallen and Sims redshirted last season. Quentin Sims spent time at quarterback last season after Shaw was injured, but moved back to wide receiver when Shaw returned in late September.

Shaw would join Joseph Gilbert, Brandon Leslie and Clyde Yandell as players who are transferring. Gilbert and Yandell are transferring to pursue graduate school studies.

He should go… He has the experience, but he just doesn’t have the physical ability. Every time he had to step in for Nesbitt he was decent, but you could tell that he’s just the type of player that has plateaued. I don’t think that he’ll be able to do anything electric with the offense and I never saw him becoming the starting QB at Tech, especially now that Luallen and Sims are getting more reps, so it’s a good move for Shaw IMO.

Jaybo may have been #10 in HS, but from what we’ve seen on the field at Tech, we won’t be missed that much. And Josh’s fill-ins – and we’ll need them – will need the practice and experience.
If he goes, fare thee well, Jaybo.
If he stays, well, he’ll still be a fill-in. But a nice guy.

Darn….kidding right…I men this is one of CPJ’s “recruits”…one of the “ones” that were gonna make us sooo much better once he and the rest of CPJ’s recruits were “ready”!

God I hope this is not a sign of things to come…we were ranked in the mid 40’s this year in recruiting?

I am worried now! Please tell me CPJ did not recruit Jaybo…I really believed them when they said how good we were going to be with “his” recruits!

Oh my! Maybe just a nasty rumor started by one of those doggies!

I always wish a Yellow Jacket well, but whenever Shaw was in against tougher talent than Duke and Mississippi State, he always appeared slow, kept the ball too much, seemed to fumble often when hit by D lineman and always stared down the primary receiver, much like Nesbitt does.

Jaybo is a good quarterback who stepped up in 08 when Nesbit went down and did great things. He is the one that threw the 9 passes that went for over 200 yds to Bay Bay. He is the one that put together the only sustainable drive that we had against UNC in 08 before penalties and fumbles lost the game for us. Jaybo has been good for GT’s offense and team. Last year because of his injuries and Nesbit’s health he didn’t see as many snaps and never got comfortable, but don’t forget he was a major part of the reason that GT won 9 games in PJ’s first year.

If you do leave good luck to you. If you go to Georgia Southern better luck. It would be great to bring some Championships back to the Boro.

Let’s don’t forget that he is trading a degree from Georgia Tech for a degree from Georgia Southern. With close to no chance of every playing in the NFL, that seems like a pretty silly thing to do. No offense to GSU, but GT is ranked in the top 10 of public universities.

If it is because he does not see himself as a good back-up or maybe a 3rd stringer, he needs to think about his education and his future, rather than just more playing time. He can contribute at QB if healthy and he can contribute in other roles if he wants to become a defensive player, Heck, maybe he can kick Field Goals and make a good living! etc, etc… But losing 2 linemen who have graduated due to not allowing them to enroll in grad school classes must mean they could not cut the mustard academically…..Guys have been enrolled in grad school before to complete their eligibility….so they must not have been accepted into a program by a dept. head. Tough luck.

UGA fans ridiculing a player for leaving is so funny. Jaybo is a good player but he knows that the Luallen and Sims are more athletic. Lets not forget that David Sims had offers to virtually every SEC school, and from traditional powerhouses like Michigan, Oregon, and FSU….he picked tech because all the other offers were for the running back position. So if he is good enough to play RB at all those schools…im excited to see what he can do at tech…the only question mark is his passing ability. Luallen seems to be the future at QB once Nesbitt leaves….he ran a similar offense in high school and was a 4 star QB. Jaybo knew that he would never be a full time starter…it makes sense for him to transfer.

I’ve been a fan of Jaybo and his brother Connor since they were freshmen in high school. These are a couple of guys that can really run an option offense well. If Jaybo decides to transfer, I’m sure he will be successful with the Eagles. My inclination is to think he should stay at Tech for the degree, but that really depends upon his career aspirations. If he plans to follow in his father’s footsteps and become a football coach, then the degree from GSU will work just fine. If, on the other hand, he wants to enter the world of commerce, then the Tech degree will probably be much more valuable to him.

Whatever the decision, I wish nothing but the best for Jaybo. He’s a good kid from a good family, and I’m confident he’ll be successful wherever he goes.

This is a good/bad situation I think. The bad is that Jaybo, in his own way, would have been a good player in this system. I remember thinking how horrible Godsey was going to be after Joey Heisman left. Then, Godsey actually turned out to be an amazing passer, just no mobility. Who remembers the 15 second 20 yard naked PA bootleg against UGA in 2000? Shaw would have turned out the same way I think: not having all the strengths of Nesbitt, but still being his own competent player.

The good in this is that we have Jordan Luallen who, by all accounts, looks like he can run almost as good as Nesbitt, but is deadly accurate on short throws (think 15-17 passes per game, w/ 10 completions). I don’t know if Luallen will be able to take the beating that Nesbitt took, but I get the impression that he won’t have to as CPJ’s offense evolves.

Either way, good luck to Jaybo. He is a good kid and really laid it on the line while at Tech. If he goes, I hope he and Monken win another NC down at GSU.

Jaybo will always be the consummate back-up QB at GT, able to come in in a pinch to spell the starter for a series or two, but he will never be the starter. If he wants to go to a D-III school and play then he has every right to and I support his decision. If he wants to stay on and be the back-up and get his degree from MaTech, I support that as well. Good luck either way.

Anyone seen enough of the other guys to know whether is will be Tevin W or Luallen that will be groomed as Nesbitt’s replacement. Josh’s absence from Spring practice is the best thing that could happen, allowing one of these guys to get all the reps and prepare them as our future starter. We don’t want to be like UGA and throw a red-headed stepchild on the field in 2011 without any clue if he can play at this level.

I agree with Tokyo. Jaybo has a place at GT. With this type of option it would be good to see Shaw get more playing time each game to give Nesbitt a rest from all the pounding he takes and Jaybo fits that bill. Jaybo looked good against Duke and this year I could see him being utilized to come in every game to give Nesbitt relief and run some plays. Will miss him if he goes

Did you know that is actually harder for an incoming freshman athlete to academically qualify at GSU than Tech? Check it out if you don’t beleive me. College is about developing life skills and social skills as well. GSU is a good school academically, has a better atmosphere, WAY more and better looking women. Better college bar scene also. Yes, I am a Dawg fan on here because it is a slow day at work and nothing else is going on. It takes a QB a while to learn the triple option system, so I think that some of Shaw’s shortcomings last season can be attributed to the learning curve. That being said, I have to think that if Shaw is thinking about transferring, it must be because he thinks either Sims or Luallen will pass him on the depth chart. Although this may hurt Tech if Nesbitt can’t go at the beginning of the season, I don’t think this will have too big of an impact on them in the long term.

Tech fans seem mighty quick to turn their noses up at Kentucky. You morons do realize that Kentucky did something that you’re overrated hyped up creampuff team could not do only a week later right? You do realize that Kentucky can beat Georgia more than once every 9 years right? You do realize that Kentucky does the unthinkable and actually wins bowl games don’t you? Against All Crap Conference teams no less. I’m sure Kentucky would love to play in the All Crap Conference where you only have to beat 8-4 teams to win the league, but unfortunately for them they play in a real football league. And you know what Tech fans? They don’t make any crybaby sissy excuses about how they don’t have the resources of the “football factories” like you do. They just play hard and keep their mouths shut. So maybe Kentucky doesn’t win 11 games in the ACC and pad its W column with Jack State, but at least they have everyones’ respect. That’s a lot more than can be said for the Joke by Coke.

I’m going to go argue with a 4 year old. That’s a lot more challenging than arguing with a Tech fan. Please let me know if there are any more softballs that you want me to knock out of the park and I’ll be happy to oblige.

Good luck to Jaybo. So much for all that big talk about beating Georgia. Typical Techie. Talk big and then cut and run when the going gets rough. I bet the Georgia game isn’t the goal anymore right Jaybo?

Beyond hilarious.

GSU=natl titles, you need to check your facts. GSU can’t come close to GT in anything academically.

I have to agree with dawgfan – Tech fans act like it was some world-stopping monumental failure to lose to Kentucky. Granted, Georgia has more resources than Kentucky, and we should beat Kentucky, but…Kentucky has been a consistent football team the past five years under Rich Brooks. They’ve had 5 consecutive winning seasons, not to mention a winning record in bowls during that span (remind me again what GT’s bowl record is?).

Seems like the bees are grasping at straws belittling the Kentucky loss.

Dawgy, please stop pointing out that we have lost five bowl games in a row or that we have been outscored 62-17 in bowls during my tenure here.

We have bigger fish to fry than worrying about losses to UGA or in bowls.

Although Jaybo’s playing time was inconsistent, he had some good series, and no one can question his dedication to the program and his willingness to take a hit. Bottom line the concussion and shoulder injury probably show that he can’t take the pounding required of the Q-back in CPJ’s system. But all of us (GT fans) should thank Jaybo and wish him well whatever he decides to do.

I lost any and all respect I had for Jaybo due to his fumbling nature. Coming out of Flowery Branch HS he was touted as our own little version of Tim Tebow and he never once lived up to the hype.

The season ticket holders around me agree that a white QB is no fit to run the Perfect Option.

Goodbye and good riddance Jaybo!

I hope he transfers.

That will maximize the reps Luallan, Sims and Washington get. Jaybo (and Nesbitt for that matter) aren’t good enough to get us where we need to be, and play for that National Championship.

Nesbitt is one dimensional, and can run, but not pass.

And Jaybo can do neither very well at the I-A level.

But CPJ’s the man. And he will soon be signaling plays to a QB that will crush UGA, and compete for National Titles.

To the one asking about Brandon Leslie….he did not make the grades at GT. I realize that is a foreign concept at the Athens Primate Center, where Jim Harrick clones give the players a B+ for making a mark for their names. To all you dawg nation guys (who seem to be eternally glued to this Tech blog) who are undoubtedly still confused about the concept of not making grades…..well, I just don’t know any other way to explain it. Just accept it………HEY WATCH OUT….YOU LET THE DAM FRIES BURN AGAIN!!!

Emotions in a blender. As a GSC/U Eagle, I’m glad to see the return of CJM and the option to give us back our identity. I just hate to see it stained yellow by Tech. Every negative thought and opinion I ever had has been validated by the “Tech Men” on these and other blogs.
You idiots who claim to be fans of Tech and GSC/U deserve twice the derision you have spewed about being disloyal to all other GSC/U fans who like other teams. Hear how the Techies really think of GSC/U folks? They are many times more arrogant and condescending to us than the fanbase of ANY other team, even the one in Athens y’all break your backs to belittle. Burn all GT hats. Trade in GT hats for GSU hats. Jaybo is actuaslly moving up in the world. At least most of our fans are genuine people and not snobs.
BTW, OUR SIX NC’s are legitimate, unshared, and recognized by the NCAA.

It really depends on what happens with his daddy at Flowery Branch. He is about to get into some trouble with the GHSA for recruiting violations. Depending on the severity of the recruiting punishment, Lee may bolt for a small college, i.e Ga Southern. I always enjoyed watching Jaybo play in high school. He is one of the toughest kids I’ve seen play QB in Hall County. As a Dawg fan, I particularly loved his play against UGA this year…..Stay tuned!

If any of you had half the courage that Jaybo did to suit up and take the kind of abuse he did every time he stepped on the field, including practice, or half the intelligence he needed to keep your grades up at GA Tech while going through the rigors of football practices, you’d either be thanking him for all the contributions he’s made to the GA Tech program or you’d be man enough to make these adolescent p*ss-ant comments face-to-face with him so he could show you how he felt about what you said about him. But no, you all hide behind your keyboards and throw around your insults, acting like you’ve accomplished something; anything, in your miserable lives. My bet is that none of you blowhards have ever stepped on the field to play ball, nor have most of you actually graduated from the college you supposedly support. Heck, I seriously doubt any of you have even donated a dime to the university, or its athletic program, either.

Learned people don’t act as trivial and childish as you, and certainly, people of compassion and faith treat each other with dignity and respect.

Agree with the comments regarding GSU’s very good academic status. Do the research and it will become apparent. Also, GSU is a 1-AA school, not 1-AAA. And studies have been going on for about a year regarding moving GSU to 1-A.
