Tech averaged 4,095 more fans than last season

We had a short in Tuesday’s paper that Georgia Tech averaged 51,584 fans last season, which was 40th in the NCAA among Division I-A schools. The entire report can be read here: http://bit.ly/avjbrd
The Yellow Jackets, though, were 12th in Division I-A in increased attendance year-over-year, averaging 4,095 more fans in 2009 than in 2008. Tech averaged a bit more than 26,000 in season ticket sales last year. Tech also took steps during the summer to improve its ticket revenue by contracting with the Aspire Group to outsource some sales. Previously, Tech handled all season-ticket sales in-house. Packages for the 2010 season are now on sale.
In athletics director Dan Radakovich’s state of the athletics association address, he spent some time discussing how Tech hopes to increase attendance in the 2010 season, including steps to get more faculty at games. The video can be watched here: http://bit.ly/cHEFFi
Overall, the ACC ranked fifth among the conferences with an average of 51,249 fans per game, a decrease of 1,488 per game.

“that game meant nothing to coach johnson or tech” What the heck are you rambling about?… Johnson was a) at Navy, b) he made Navy, a military academy where no one goes pro in to a consistent 8-10 game winner. I realize that is only UGA level competence in wins but not with any of the resource UGA has. c) He won national champion ships at GEORGIA SOUTHERN. They were a dynasty when he was there. d) he is 1 for 1 with UGA and honestly both games were close enough to go either way despite UGA having First Round Draft Picks starting at Tailback, Wide Reciever, Quarterback, Linebacker, and D-Line.
Becareful what you ask for, you might get a sensible response that merits a counter question, what has Richt done in comparison to Johnson?

Lets see… When CPJ was at Southern he won two D1-AA National Championships. At Navy he went 11-1 against the other service academies, he beat Notre Dame for the first time in about 40 years, and won the Coach of the Year award. At Tech he has won ACC COTY two years running, won the ACC in his second year, and broke the UGA spell in Athens, the year you were preseason #1 and we were supposed to win 3 games.
Not to say Richt isn’t a great coach, but CPJ is fabulous. He has exceeded expectations at every level of play and is now bringing Tech onto the national football scene

I would rather have an undefeated season and NC with no one ever in the seats than sell-outs with a 7 or 8 win season (like the puppies).

The thing is, we can actually SEE the game at Grant Field. I’m an alum and a l-o-n-g time GT season ticket holder, married to a UGA grad, so I’m forced to go to a couple a UGA games per year when Tech is out of town. Sanford Stadium is a beautiful venue, but the seating layout is crummy. The best seats, lower deck/mid-field are a mile from the sideline. The deep sideline area, the hedges, and the promanade around the field are nice, but they push the stnads too far back from the field. This combined with the low rise of the original stands (the steps are only about 4 inches high) really makes you appeciate Grant Field’s closeness to the field. It’s a lot like the Dome in that regard. Both are great places to WATCH a game.

Ah the pups are back out early, I see. Don’t you know you are supposed to be doing your schoolwork right now, not blogging on a GT blog. I understand the bitterness, I truly do. You pups can’t stand the fact that our program is on the rise while your program continues to be a constant failure. Keep reminding me who has more national titles? Oh, that wouldn’t be GT, would it? Face the facts that even with our GT team reloading, our team will still end up doing better than UGA. Now, as far as the stadium attendance, who cares who has more fans showing up? Last I checked, at least GT fans aren’t walking out with 5 minutes left and our team only down by one score against a team like Kentucky. See, for all your fans, how many honest to god true fans do you have? Not many, in my opinion.

I’ve been to a variety of stadiums around the league and I actually like Sanford stadium from the lower section of the bowl. It is definitely an intimidating atmosphere even though you are somewhat further from the field. It also holds noise well and provides an awesome home advantage. The old Orange Bowl was not up to the level I expected and neither is Death Valley at Clemson.
I like Bobby Dodd simply because I feel like you can get a good view from much of the stadium except the North stands. It doesn’t hold noise as well as I would like but that’s also a function of our fan base not always doing it for us. The closeness helps a lot even though it allows our student section to behave like jackasses and throw things onto the field. That needs to be brought under control.
I think we are partially constrained by land size in downtown but at the same time, we have a different sized fanbase to seat. If both teams swapped stadiums, you’d have a never full Tech at Sanford and UGA fans trying to hide season ticket holder deaths in the family to keep the seats at Bobby Dodd like some Duke fans had done at Cameroon indoor with season tickets. But honestly, who really cares? Having more fans isn’t concurrent with wins – look at RichRod at Michigan. And more fans is also a function of home schedule, 2010 sucks at home so I would expect a lower turnout.

It’s pretty nice. I was there in 2002 so it might have changed a little bit. Horseshoe configuration with a nice view from the upper decks. There’s a track around the field like Sanford. When I was there, the mascot was cruising around the track on a three wheeler and Buzz clotheslined it off in front of us. It was awesome.

I’ve been there many times, and I share the view of Sporting News, “the best venue in American to watch a football game”. The recent additions allows it to rank 2d-to-none in terms of facilities. Set in a natural bowl, the view of the pine trees (hence the term “playing under the pines” and the bell tower, provides one of the most beautiful settings east of the Rockies (UVa, West Point, Va. Tech are also beautiful). I have not been to Sanford Stadium. I would like to know who Kenan and Stanford compare. Anyone been to both in past 3-5 years?

Per a UGA TV documentary, Sanford was initially modeled after UNC’s Kenan Stadium initially. Subsequent decks, etc are obviously different. Very rich history with GT/UGA early games that resulted in building a stadium in Athens.
Kenan added individual seats sevaral years ago to replace bleacher seats >>> narrow legroom.

Funny how GT ranks their 4 NC when half of them where during the horse drawn carriage days, but never UGA’s 1 in 1942. That’s probably due to your inadequacy in many areas of your life; like being a man.
Keep counting CPJ’s NC in the minor leagues too and ask what has UGA done since 1980.

Many a Georgia citizen rues the day the UGA Grads that started GT didn’t put their campus in Athens as first planned. A few certain UGA Grads thought UGA needed a Technical School…and look what we have now. And the GT fans have the nerve to think UGA has an inferiority complex. Without UGA Grads, there is NO GT. Ya’ll enjoy it now….

UGA and tech played in Atlanta and that is the ONLY REASON that their average attendance was up. Now, look at 2010 and the game will be in Athens and their stadium attendance will be down. Also, given the fact that tech IS IN a major, major metro area and they can ONLY average about 55,000 in their stadium on game day vs UGA’s 93,000?? Sad. Pathetic and proves that the Tech brand has no following.

Kenan Stadium is a nice place to view a football game and Chapel Hill is a beautiful location. Parking close to the stadium can be a pain – park in one of the off-campus lots, tail gate there and take the shuttle to the stadium. If you are coming up here for the game try to get tickets through UNC – the visitors section sucks.
In 2011 GT plays at Duke and at NCSU. Duke has a nicely laid out, horseshoe shaped stadium (even held the Rose Bowl in 1942) and you can get tickets on the 50 with no problem. NCSU stadium is not as good as the other 2 but has easy access and excellent parking. When GT played there a few years ago they gave passes at half time so that you could go back to the parking lot in case you wanted a couple of “beverages”.

Yes, the statistic we (or Doug) should be looking at is SEASON TICKET sales. I expect they will be DOWN versus 2010 based on the awful home schedule and coach’s inability to beat UGA at home last year (when we were favored) and also look responsible in a bowl game. Verdict is still out on Johnson irregardless of what GT fans say in here. He is 1-1 vs UGA and 0-2 in bowls. Chan was 1-6 vs UGA, I think. Johnson could just as well end up there too. The fact that his 2009 Team Goal placard didn’t mention beating UGA seemed extremely odd to me.

Chan Gailey was 0-6 against UGA. Not one win. He also had 7 wins 5 out of 6 years with no ACC Championships. Paul Johnson has accomplished more in 2 seasons then Chan did in 6. And no, beating UGA should not go on any goal card. Its not important enough to be a season goal.

(And the GT National Championship in 1990) Mythical 1980 national championship victory over a Notre Dame squad that coudn’t even beat the 1-9-1 Yellowjackets that year. ND completely dominated uga statistically that day and blundered the game away. GT had a more impressive showing against the leprechans that year. Question here: UNC vs UGa. Both schools established roughly same time; both claim to have been established first. Research shows that UGa first to charter, but UNC up and operating several years before UGa. So my question is, why so you think UNC has overshadowed UGa academically over the years? The Awful House supports tech ball. They offer free chili ( it IS really good ) and a free waffle IF they can handle UGA three years in a row, like UGA always does. Now, if they win FIVE TIMES in a row like UGA always seems to, techers earn a plate of fried eggs and hash browns, crisp bacon. Free it all is but YOU MUST attend the game for the entire 4 qtrs. You must also BRING A GIRL that is attractive ……….no pencil pockets allowed, either
Coffee is extra. This is the entire marketing program for tech football.

Catsfly, your question is a good one. I could add SCar to the mix. Like UGa, Scar has lagged behind UNC academically. I can only surmise that schools which draw students from outside of the South, like UNC does, simply starts with higher-caliber students. But I’m sure there are other factors as well.
I do know that UNC is highly endowed, and its medical and business school draws outside people as well.

You GT supporters are so pathetic. You just don’t get it do you? It’s easy to have a large increase in ticket sales when you aren’t selling out, DUH. What’s amazing is you have a little crackerbox sized stadium with 50,000 seats AND CAN’T SELL OUT!!! If not for Georgia and Clemson on your home schedule, you wouldn’t have had an increase in sales. BTW for the poster who claimed the Joke by Coke had better sight lines than Sanford Stadium, try that North upper deck buddy, from there you can’t see anything from the 5 yd line into the endzone, well that’s not true, you can see the muggings on campus.
If D-Rad really wants to do something special for GT games, a new tradition, here’s a winning idea, this one will rock the house —- Fried Fish at your concession stands, because evidently your Head Coach has an affinity for Fried Fish. Maybe you boys could have a “Big Fish Fry” before one of those Thursday evening traditional games you pride yourself on. Heck, maybe CPJ will make a personal appearance and once again make that now infamous statement “we’ve got bigger fish to fry than Georgia”, PLEASE, show the world those bigger fish with CPJ frying them. ONe more question for you “do you need tartar sauce with your fish, or more Paul Johnson yeller mustard???”

How many of those 51,000 tickets were $25 end zone seats that GT sells for their conference games? For the UGA game they bumped the price to $75.
Everyone I know that has looked at the 2010 GT home schedule is hesitating about committing to season tickets.

ugaggers keep on buying the season ticket packages so you have a mile high seat every other year.
