Updates on Dwyer, Morgan and Thomas

Some quick hits for you:

Wide receiver Demaryius Thomas had surgery on Sunday, according to his facebook page. He posted on Sunday night/Monday morning that it went well. Thomas broke his foot last Tuesday during  a training drill. He will miss this week’s NFL Combine, as well as Tech’s pro day in mid-March. He’s been steadily rising up the boards of most NFL draft analysts.

If I were a NFL GM or in some sort of talent-evaluating role, I’m not sure I could pass on Thomas if I needed a wide receiver. He’s big (6-3). He’s fast (4.38 in the 40-yard). He can block. He’s strong. And, with two exceptions last year, he can catch. Braylon Edwards drops more passes that in one series. The thing I like about Thomas is he’s physical, but not clumsy.

—-

Jonathan Dwyer said he has lost about 17 pounds since he arrived at Michael Johnson training facility in the Dallas area in mid-January. He’s betwee 220-225 now, which is where he said he wants to be. He said he feels like he’s a half-step quicker.

I asked him how long it took him to get used to being 7 yards behind center, instead of the 3 yards he was in spread-option. I joked did he flinch the first couple of times he took a snap and took a couple of steps, because that’s usually when he was making contact with defensive linemen. He laughed and said it only took a few snaps for him to get used to lining up in the spot that RBs go in a pro-style offense. After all, as he pointed out, it’s where lined up all but two years of his playing career.

—-

Derrick Morgan said he’s spent a lot of time at the API Camp in Arizona (which is where Thomas trains) working on technique and improving his results in the drills that he will be tested on at the combine.

I asked him if spending all this time working on these drills before he gets to the Indy felt like cheating. What if he gets there and they’ve changed the drills.

He laughed and said he guesses he’s out of luck if that’s the case.

Something Morgan Burnett told me last week, that I forgot to include in my post, is how much he’s missed his family and little boy, also named Morgan, while he’s been in Orlando working out.

Burnett is probably the biggest question mark of Tech’s underclassmen. Some analysts say he’ll go in the first round if he clocks a good 40 at the combine. Others have him rated, much, much lower with no reason given.

—-

Read more about Tech’s underclassmen in a story in the ajc and on ajc.com later this weeks. Those are just some tidbits for you.

No insight on the 40 times. All I know is that Dwyer rarely got caught from behind at Tech. It happened a couple of times, but usually because he was trying evade a dude in front of him.

I reckon we will find out this week.

Four REALLY good players that will have success in the NFL…………………I just wish they had decided to return to GT for one more year; can you imagine the success they would have had against college teams????????

Good luck to all four & Go GT!

What I am hearing on Burnett is that a lot of the league guys don’t see him as the big hitter that most teams like to see at the safety position. Might have problems handling some of the TEs he will see in the league.

exNFL: can you clarify what you mean by “handling.” Do you mean covering or tackling?

exNFLpayer

Both. Is he physical enough. It seems that he got less physical as his career went along. At least that’s some of what I’ve heard. Some of the league guys like Rashad Jones better in the long term.

Hey ExNFLPayer – you sound like a UGA grad – especially since you cannot spell (you left out the “l” in player, unless you are someone who used to pay the NFL in terms of fines, which would also point to an ex-UGA ex-con!! Quit making up stuff to bring GT players down – focus on the pathetic state of UGA football relative to their high recruting rankings each year

Sorry UGA Girls are Dawgs, played in the SEC but not at UGA. Just saying what I’m hearing about Burnett. Also if you watched some of GT’s games this year you’d have seen that for yourself. If you know what you’re seeing in the first place that is. If you want some negativity on UGA players the rap on Jones is his coverage skills. The league just prefers headhunters at the Safety position that make receivers respect the middle of the field. If Burnett can do that he’ll prove it on the field now won’t he?

exNFL player – i think those are valid points, but I do think Morgan B is a super athelete so he will impress at the combine, that being said he did seem to get a little less physical throughout his career at GA Tech but I hardly see Jones making a bigger impact in the NFL but only time will tell…

Hey ex, UGA Girls are Dawgs is one of those techmites that you see after 9 out of 10 UGA games scratching his head and trying to pull his panties out of a wad wondering what the hell just flattened his sweet little team AGAIN.

Burnett had a bad year, as did most of the DBs. And the linebackers. Hope to see better results with Gros and the 3-4 and the occasional 5-4 stand-up DEs. Will be a huge upgrade if Taylor can return.

Drafting players in the NFL is almost as unpredictable as recruiting for college. The game gets faster and the players get tougher. exNFLplayer, don’t pay in attention to UGA Girls are Dawgs he does not represent Tech. You are correct about Morgan, I believe he can be that agressive hitter, I waited all year for one of his slobber knocker hits. With Taylor being out he seemed to be more intent on coverage.

“exNFLplayer ” and all of you other Morgan Burnett ignorant’s; Morgan was playing injured most of the season (hand/wrist injury) and also was having to cover up for all of the other injured and young players in the defensive backfield for the Jackets last season. Looking at the prior two seasons as a better gauge, Morgan is still considered as one of the premier safeties coming out this year, and, as mentioned, if his 40is decent, his draft status should be quite nice, thank you very much.

As for the other Jackets listed in the article, they’ll also do themselves and their families proud, regardless of what anyone else thinks.

“Insider” you’re funnier than hell. Come back when you know something about football you didn’t poach off of somebody else’s website.

Maybe you can tell us why Burnett is dropping like a rock down draft boards. Excuses don’t count. And afterward tell us why he can’t carry Eric Berry’s jockstrap and flails his arms at UGA running backs as they blow past.

Insider…LMAO…I guess that wrist/hand is why he jumped out of Caleb King’s way and waved bye bye at him on that 75 yard TD run. Maybe the NFL detects he’s afraid to lay the lumber.

Dwyer, UGA and um, Iowa

February 22nd, 2010
3:51 pm

Dwyer vs UGA got 33 and vs Iowa he had 30 yds in the first half and 98% of them came with only two or thre minutes to go in first half.

He will be a great utility back at NFL level. Punt coverages and kick offs and to come in late in game only spell a second stringer.

1-9 soon to be the facts ……….so for now ……….it is 1-8 aaaaaaaaahahahahaaaaaaah

By the way, has tech played UGA in BB?? AAAAAAAAAAHAHAHHAHAHAHA

Burnett fits great in a cover 2. on a defense that wants the SS to be a big hitter he’d be miscast. But more and more teams want safeties that can make plays on the ball and aren’t just hitters – hence the reason why Taylor Mays’ stock is falling.

And I didn’t realize Dwyer had gotten so big. At 220 he’s going to be a beast. Someone’s going to be real happy they drafted him.

And just for the record i’m not a Tech fan. It’s all about the U with me, but am pulling for these 4 guys cause definitely respect their play.

NFL draft and UGA

February 22nd, 2010

I could care less about the NFL and in fact, when one places value on the “League” I know first hadn that they are obamarons.

I did not graduate UGA nor did Tech student pals of mine to brag about the “League”. That matters only to thugs and morons. Give me a kid that has a solid gpa and gets a fine exec job with career trajectory and benefits and THAT will get my attention.

The League and who is drafted? That is for children, thugs and urban morons ….aka obamarons.

I am amused at how illogical and ignorant little uga fans are, such as dwyer, UGA and um, Iowa…lets take 2 games out of his career and point out that because of those games he is not going to be successful…why don’t you go back to the previous year and compare Dwyer’s stats vs UGA?…why are you so obsessed with Jon Dwyer??

As for Dwyer’s speed, he was clocked at a camp by rivals at 4.40 coming out of high school. He looks like that speed is pretty accurate since I never saw a DB run him down when healthy.
