Tech’s Nesbitt to miss spring practice

Georgia Tech quarterback Josh Nesbitt will miss spring practice because of minor surgery on his right ankle.

Nesbitt, a junior from Greensboro, passed for 1,701 yards and rushed for 1,037 last season. He accounted for 28 touchdowns last season, 18 rushing and 10 passing in helping Tech win the ACC championship. He didn’t miss a game because of injury last season.

The Yellow Jackets’ spring practice begins March 29 and concludes April 24.

Nesbitt, who  is being mentioned as a possible Heisman Trophy contender in 2010, is expected to return for fall practices in August.

Tech has four other quarterbacks on its roster, including Jaybo Shaw, Tevin Washington, David Sims and Jordan Luallen. Sims and Luallen redshirted last season.

B-back Preston Lyons (shoulder) will also miss spring practice. Offensive tackle Phil Smith (knee) is expected to return.

Really bad to hear. I was hoping he’d get the chance to improve his passing over the Spring and work on his progressions.

If it was just to “clean out” the ankles, why did they wait till now? Why not do it as soon as the bowl was over?

He will be fine. THis might actually turn out to be a good thing since it will let the young guns get some reps. I think Nesbitt has earned a little time off and I also think he has proven that he knows how to run the offense. He doesn’t NEED to be in spring practice anyways. This kid is a stud and this won’t slow him down one bit.

I think this isn’t too bad. The young man gave his heart and soul to the Jackets last year. He clearly knows the system. It will give the younger guys more reps and let JN fully heal. Get well Josh & Go Jackets!

I agree, give Josh some time off, he will be fine. It won’t prevent him from throwing the ball this summer. We need to see what the other quarterbacks can do this spring, before the season starts. I belive this is a positive thing that will help us get ready for the season. I’m looking forward to see who rises to the top.

The guy doesn’t need spring practice. He could use a QB coach though. He and Tebow will both end up in the NFL QB recycle bin. no room for their QB mechanics in the NFL. It’s all about Vertical passing, and being damn good at it.

Talk about the ACC being a basketball (not football) conference. Well there is plenty talk of both football and basketball on the rivals’ sites of UNC, Tech, VaTech, MD, CLemson, etc. The last post on UGa basketball on rivals was 4 days ago. That is proof that UGa is a football-only school. Man, it’s BB season and all people at UGa can talk about is football. I know their team is terrible, but it will always be that way because there are no UGa BB fans.

I say let Nesbitt do whatever the heck he wants. No one fought harder for their team last year than Josh, and he couldn’t bolt for the NFL like his best friends. The man deserves our support even if he doesn’t play a single snap this year. He’s already a walking Tech legend as far as I’m concerned.

But I wish him the best and hope this only makes him stronger and faster in the future! Go Jackets!

Cats, this is the Deep South…this is football country no matter WHAT college you root for. Even at Wake and Duke their desire is to stay good at BBall but keep growing in FB. If we were up in Indiana maybe the conversation would look a little different, but as much as I love GT being good at whatever we do…I’d rather have solid football and baseball. Those are the traditional Southern sports, as I see it.

Good recovery for Nesbitt. Hopefully reps will help the other QB’s. With an improved 3-4 defensive scheme maybe this will allow Tech to pass more effectively. I’m with Mr. Quacksworth, UGA plays dirty and they intentionally tried (and succeeded) to hurt Josh’s ankles during that game. Why no flag was thrown is completely beyond me and how any of them can brag over a win that resulted from their only strategy of “hurt Josh Nesbitt’s legs/ankles” cause otherwise we’ll lose is beyond me. I only ever see this from UGA, never from Tech when UGA has the athletically superior team, goes to show you which school and coaches have class.
And yes, this is a pattern, remember Eddie Lee Ivory? The same strategy cost him millions of dollars and a long career. THWG, you cheating thugs! I hope your entire starting offense faces these same attempts in every game next season, and then I will sit back and laugh at your whines about sportsmanship while you get your payback.

Nesbitt is very good at running the option but he isn’t good enough throwing the ball to win the Heisman. His rushing numbers aren’t impressive enough to compensate for his poor passing. His inability to throw the ball has cost Tech a handful of games over the years. When you throw the ball as rarely as Tech does you’ve gotta be able to complete more than 46% of your attempts. His completion percentage needs to be closer to 55%. If he can get there, Tech will truly be a dangerous offense.

The uniforms have been different over the last two years. I’ve been a student at Tech for the last 5 years, and the best ones I’ve seen were the “Throwback Thursday” ones with white helmets. I used to think the Gailey-era uniforms had a weak color of gold on them…too light and shiny. The CPJ’s first year we had the correct school color used (truly Old Gold) but on a more modern pattern. Then the same modern pattern got colored with the lighter gold…it’s not terrible, but I think we need to stick to one scheme. White tops with gold lettering and gold pants on Grant Field (no Navy anywhere on it), then white tops with white pants on the road. Helmets should stay the true metallic Old Gold with a white GT and occasionally white with a gold GT. Only. I don’t want Russell to go all Nike-at-Oregon with us.

Anti-alternative, I totally agree on the “no Navy”. I don’t care what any committee decided a few years ago, blue is NOT one of Tech’s colors. It is, and always has been, white and gold. It’s pretty simple. His rushing stats aren’t impressive enough to compensate for his poor passing numbers: 75/162 (46%), 1701 yards, 10 TD, 5 INT. He wasn’t even the leading rusher on his own team. He averaged just 3.7 yards per carry.

Let’s compare that to former Nebraska QB Tommie Frazier. He was a Heisman runner-up in his senior season. That year he completed 98-177 (55.4%) for 1,467 yards, 18 TD and 6 INT. He had 113 carries, 803 yards (7.1 ypc) and 16 TD.

Again, Frazier was more impressive running the ball AND he was a much better passing, as evidenced by his 9% higher completion percentage and his 18 TD/6 INT.

As impressive as Frazier’s numbers were in his senior year, he was still just a Heisman runner-up. Nesbitt isn’t even in the same zip code as Frazier as a passer or runner.

A lot fewer Dawgs on a Tech blog than the other way around, I assure you “have in common”.

Nesbitt has a lot of heart and gives his all on every play. To say that UGA was “dirty” and tried to hurt him is just silly speculation. Anyone who played the game knows that you don’t “try” to hurt anyone but if they get hurt during the course of the game, that’s just part of it. You Tech fans who think the Dawgs were trying to hurt him, and that this is why he is getting ankle surgery need to take a step back and try reality. The reason he is having the surgery is because the QB position in your offense takes a flippin’ beating every game, and someone who plays as hard and with as much heart as Nesbitt is going to get banged up.

It’s the nature of the game, people!

No, he won’t be competing against Frazier. LOL. That wasn’t the point of my post.

Frazier was a contender because he was a good passer to go along with being an exceptional runner. That’s the type of season it’s going to take to get a QB running that system into the serious Heisman discussion. Nesbitt is neither. Nesbitt wasn’t even the leading rusher on his own team. He posted a very modest 3.7 ypc average. If he’s going have passing numbers like he had last year, he’s going to need to have an exceptional year running the ball. A 3.7 ypc average, while not even leading your own team in rushing yards, is not exceptional. The elite RBs will have FAR better rushing stats. That’s why Nesbitt needs better passing stats to bridge the gap.

In order to be a Heisman contender, Nesbitt needs to: A) have an exceptional year running the football or B) vastly improve his passing numbers to go with his fairly solid, but unspectacular rushing numbers.

I realize that you’re a GT fan, but you’ve gotta take off the gold blinders and look at this objectively. If you do, you’ll understand what I’m saying. I’m not bashing Nesbitt at all. Just stating the facts.

Gutfeld, you said that he should get his percentage up to about 55%… I think that it probably should have been closer to that this past year than to what it was. From what I saw this season, I would guess that over 1/4 of the incompletions were dropped passes that were catchable. Especially as the season progressed and we started passing more to the A-Backs… They really need to work on their hands in the offseason because they were dropping balls left and right.

I agree. GT fans shouldn’t care if he’s a Heisman contender. I was just replying to those who said he would be. All GT fans should be worried about his Nesbitt improving his completion percentage to the point where he can step up and consistently make plays in the passing game when needed. He wasn’t able to do that last year and the lack of a passing game ended up really hurting Tech in a few games.

Nesbitt

February 18th, 2010
3:48 pm

Gutfeld makes a good point on Nesbitt’s limitations as a passer, but that isn’t why he won’t be considered for the Heisman. He will never be the strongest runner in the game and thus will never put up the biggest numbers. And because this is a running team, primarily, he will be over shadowed no matter how great of a job he does. Bottom line, he’s very good at many things, but great in any one category as to be an outstanding Heisman candidate. However, he does put the team in the best position to win and that’s the most important thing.

Dan

February 18th, 2010
3:48 pm

GTMike, you’re right that people need to lay off him about the passing for a couple reasons. First, we only do it like four times a game so it’s difficult to get into a rythm. Second, all of our passes are 50 yards downfield so it’s not surprising the likelihood of a completion goes down. Third, our pass protection was horrible all year.

And you’re also right that his receivers often didn’t help him. Obviously the Bay Bay drop hurt us against UGA, but the other one that comes to mind is the drop by Roddy in the ACCCG on the opening drive. He was wide open at the three yard line and it hit him right in the chest and he dropped it.

No offense taken at all, Gutfield. Didn’t intend any attitude at all. I think the lack of a passing game hurt us against UGA but the play calling didn’t help either (which is the other issue with Nesbitt’s completion percentage – i.e. we throw deep every time we throw it). I had no issue with us throwing it but there was no need to throw it 40 yards downfield at that point. Also, the way our defense was playing, even if we had scored a TD to get a 31-30 lead, Caleb King probably would have run it 70 yards on the first play anyway.

Nesbitt

February 18th, 2010
3:52 pm

To be sure, improvement in his passing skills would change the consideration entirely, and every gain in passing consistency will make him that much more dangerous to opposing defenses. As it stands though, most teams will prepare entirely for the run attack because his passing attack is a lower percentage threat.

Dan, I felt the biggest problem was the defenses inability to hold the line of scrimmage. Most of the running plays by Georgia were relatively small (by Paul Johnson’s standards at least). The weakness at the tackles should be a major focus this spring.

Dan

I dunno, the UGA backs were ripping off yards in chunks against us. Part of that was the line but part of it was just poor tacking and poor positioning. The backers never tackled (a problem UGA fans can actually sympathize with probably) and the secondary was terrible all year.

We had no pass rush either once teams started doubling up 91.

Gutfeld

Dan

I agree with your point regarding the play calling. That was definitely an issue late in the UGA game. There have been a few other games over the last two years though where the lack of a more consistent passing game probably cost Tech a couple wins and there will surely be 2-3 this season as well if he doesn’t improve in that area.

Full disclaimer: I’m not a Tech fan so I hope he doesn’t improve his passing skills. LOL. But I can talk about the subject objectively with folks like you–GT fans who are willing to talk about it objectively.

The UGA play in question was definitely dirty as the UGA player rolled over on his ankle more then once and had to make an effort to do it. Did it really cause Nesbitt to need this surgery? I doubt it. Nesbitt has had ankle issues since last year. Hopefully, it was minor and he will fully recover quickly.

This is football and players get hurt. Great teams have enough depth to cover or good enough coaches to know how best to use the downtime of injured starters.

As for the uniforms, I am glad someone brought up the bball uniforms worn the other night against UNC. That is exactly the right color and general look.

When does a team that has a chance to win in the 4th quarter constitute a blow out. Tech loses so seldom that inadvertently when they do it is a massacre. The only team to really blow Tech out last year was Miami.

GTFan, I think we do too. I try not to get too caught up in what Rivals, et al say about recruiting but Luallen was a four star guy so I think we have reason to be optimistic. Been following Jacket football since the 50’s and already have Nesbitt “up there” with Lil Joe, on my list of all time great players. I actually think that Josh being out of Spring Ball is for the best. I always thought that there was a significant drop-off in QB position whenever Josh was out of a game. QB’s take a lot of shots in Triple Option Offense and we need to have some other guys ready to step in…and I am not real sure that Jaybo is THE answer in that situation. I think that is high time that some other guys get some practice reps so that CPJ can see what else we’ve got.

CatsFly, UGA is a football school. UNC is a basketball school . UNC has seen some improvement in the football program but I wouldn’t expect it to last. UGA making it to the the dance in 2008 was a bit of a fluke. They’re getting better as evidenced by some keys wins over GT, Vandy, UT but I’d give I’d like to see a couple consecutive seasons of placement in the tourney before mentioning UGA football and basketball in the same sentence.

The gold of the uniforms is closer to what the school color actually is, but it should be a little darker. I like it better than the shiny metallic gold. I could live without those fat stripes, though.

With Lyons out maybe Drummond will get more reps and make a move on the B-Back position. I’m interested in knowing how he has developed during his red-shirt year. He was great in high school at Flowery Branch, but people tend to forget about players who are red shirting.

I guess we’ll find out in the Spring.

Catsfly, I think UNC is closer to being both than is UGa. UNC has gone to bowls in the last two seasons, and is ranked as high as 14th for 2010 pre-season. UNC was very good under Mack Brown, better than UGa was during his last 3-4 seasons. I see UNC football future as being very good, contrary to what Let Big Dawg Eat thinks. UNC is a big-time athletic program, and the football has simply fell pray to bad coaching hires for a period, just like was the case with UGa and Bama and some of their hires (Geoff, Shula, etc). UNC projects a bright future in FB as well as BB. UGa BB is much, much below UNC football.

Not bad news for Tech. He’ll be able to practice throwing a lot and make sure his academics are good heading into fall. Good stuff for a good kid.

I think his intensity on the field is what’s driving his shot at a Heisman. It could be argued that no one in Div 1 plays harder or gets hit more. I think it’s impressive for someone to get 2800 total yards that got hit 60 times per game. If he can get to about 2200 and 1200 yds with an 11-win season, he’ll be going to Manhattan. Big IF though. But, CPJ has shown a nack for developing QBs that his predecessor never did.

Are all tech fans/students/graduates high and delusional, wannabe-terrorists, or egocentric maniacs nicknamed “Cliff”? Mostly, i’ll be covering the majority.. Those of you who seriously think you are/were/or ever will be a “better football program” than UGA, you need to have psychiatric exams, or drug tests. Your program will always be second to UGA barring a catastrophic event involving Athens Ga, the campus, or the team/players. Why do think our stadium holds twice as many fans as yours? Before you answer, remember all of those empty seats, and loose gimmicks in an attempt to fill them. Why do you think we consistently rank top twenty in recruiting, and mid thirties is the best you’ve had in an entire class? Every talented young man who is serious about the sport of football, growing up in the state of Georgia, and who wants to have a legitimate career in the NFL only thinks of one hometown college in this state. Your team is full of Brooking/Reggie ball ‘esqe players who fight harder for one game at the end of November every year, only to have a realistic one out of ten chance to win. If you wanna go back further than ten years, go the whole way. Almost a full two wins to every one of yours. Quit coming onto our blogs, like St. Simons, and that duece Goldtimer, and running your mouths to older , much bigger and stronger, brother UGA. What would any normal big brother do to the smaller brother who runs his mouth? Smack him in it. That’s what you’re feeling every November. You win one by three points, and you parade around showing your short, shriveled, and crooked stingers, and expect big brother to put up with it? THATS why our worst in ten beat your best in almost twenty. Remember the 2008 rings? The hedges? THATS why we planted our flag in the middle of that high school field Bobby-Dodd after we straightened out all of that mouth running from such an inferior opponent. Our victory over you may have been the icing on the cake of realizing we need to run the ball at the end of the season, but it didn’t “make” our season. You know why, Tasty Bees? Because we are SUPPOSED TO BEAT YOU. You may as well count as our yearly donation to a div. 1AA team. We own you. AND you know it. YOU MAY ARGUE, BUT YOU KNOW IT.

If you take your post and switch tech and UGA and substitute Rodney Hampton for Eddie Lee Ivery, you have the same post from UGA’s perspective. I found that to be funny as all fans see things only from their own perspective.

As a UGA fan I hope Nesbitt gets to 100% bc I dont want to hear any bickering after a 20 rush for 35 yard performance this season and another L hanging on the losers of North Ave. When you win a bowl game not named Humanitarian call us until keep up the good work of beating those bs acc cupcakes.

Nesbitt is a great tight end and landscaping

Between the knee and now his ankle, Josh Nesbitt is on borrowed time. He will not be drafted in the NFL as a Qb and he is no where near close to being in the top 10 for Heisman. He will not/cannot take another year of pounding like LSU, Iowa and Miami and UGA ( one of the worst UGA teams in many years ) and the lil boys in the ACC will hit him with. This is the ugly, harsh reality of middle school, triple option ball. It eats up the QBs. Another reason the system was JUNKED in the 70s.

If Tech get behind the mediocre ACC teams like Clemson, Va Tech and a hapless NC or a Miami, their year will end up like 7-5 and the Blue Carpet in Boise will be on tap. The Weedeater is signing up with the ACC, I do believe and the SEC’s lowest bowl will become the Gator ………I think. Tech could be in the Weedeater. What a hoot !!! Seriously, Shoney’s fried shrimp ain’t that bad.

Josh N. will be drafted as a project type of player maybe as a safety or T end …….. unless his ankles and knees go first. He will BE CAREFUL in 2010 ……….because he wants that NFL money. He will have only a so so year and will come out of most games …….winning or not to protect his body. Can’t blame him ………..beats a landscaping job after he is done. HAHAHAHAHA

30-24 and Dwyer got 33 vs UGA and 0 in first half vs Iowa.

If Josh improves his passing by a mere 10% this year he’ll be a lock for a Heisman finalist (provided his other numbers stay the same).

I don’t think he’ll get it, but the press will be excellent for recruiting.

There’s more to CFB glory than having high-profile 5 star recruits, as the dogs are Exhibit A.

Hayseed dixie…most of them go on to play in the pros thats what happens to them. =)

going to be a long year for you techsters. when nesbitt goes down after having to run every play your pj qbs will get crushed..all of them are way too little to take the beating nesbitt has been getting the past two years. you have no dwyer to hand it off too so that means more carries for the qb and more carries equals more hits.

Hey Supersize, you might want to check out GT’s website about your colors. There are actually several colors. Just because they picked old gold and white back 120 years ago don’t mean things can’t be modified. They wore navy blue jerseys when they won the MNC 20 years ago.

for all you foolish people who thinks he needs to run every play, hopefully Nesbitt will get a handle on this offense, and PITCH the ball more often. Josh will be fine. Ultimately Tech does need to address the depth of the QB position. What makes Josh effective in the Triple Option is he is literally built Ford Tough. You have to be at least 215lbs of solid muscle to take that type of beating he takes on the hand offs alone. Tech just needs to hope the CPJ can close the deal with Wilcox County’s QB Nick Marshall unless someone they already has can step up.

It will be good to see the other QBs in the Spring work, particularly Luallen. He’s big and fast, not sure if he’s Nesbitt-tough (but who is?) It was reported by the AJC back when Shaw returned to active status that Tevin Washington was moving back to A-back.

Roberson, who is mentioning Noodle Arm Nesbitt as a Heisman canidate and in what looney bin or drug rehab facility did you find them? Nobody capable of a coherent thought would mention this guy in the same breath as the Heisman. He has absolutely ZERO passing ability and never will. Tech fans are in total la la land if they think this guy is going to magically learn how to throw a football. He was supposed to improve drastically from ‘08 to ‘09 but that turned out to be the typical hot air that comes out of Tech fans. He did not improve at all. Tech will continue to rush for 300+ yard against ACC weaklings because that’s what Paul Johnson does and that’s what makes him happy. Despite all his tough talk, I don’t think he aspires for anything more. This guy has NEVER had a QB run his offense that could throw the ball worth a damn. Know why? Because you’re talking about a rare kind of talent like Tim Tebow, Vince Young, or Eric Crouch that could pull that off and guys that talented wouldn’t whiz on Georgia Tech football if it were on fire. All this talk about how dangerous the offense will be if Tech develops a passing game is all hype and will never happen. Mark it down. Never.

I will give Georgia Tech football one thing though. They are competing hard to become the most overrated college football program in the nation. VT, Ohio State, and Boise State better watch out. The nerdherd is coming after you.

February 19th, 2010

UGA’s Charles Grant while running the ball near the Tech goal was ankle chopped by Tech’s safety and it blew his knee in late 90s. It was a diliberate shot. Very unnecessary it was.

Ask UGa QB Eric Zeir about a no body Tech lineman ( aren’t they all?? ) rolling on his knee, as Eric went down and the TV replay showed it about 5 times and the tv men called out for penalties and there were none.

Ask H Walker about the Tech game where Dooley removed him late only to come back in during a 51-0 route after Tech linemen were spitting in Hershel’s face and Dooley heard about it. HAHAHAAHHAHA

Over the many years always a fine pistol whipping vs Tech. 30-24 and 1-9 or soon to be come November and 4-18. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA That will also be th month Obama gets his come upance with about 50+ DC Democrat pols being SWEPT out of office. Obama is next.

Yes Tech fans, that 2008 season was a huge embarrassing failure for UGA. We only won 10 games with one of the toughest schedules in the nation and finished top 10 in the coaches poll. Winning 11 games against ACC creampuffs, Jack State, Vandy, and Miss St is much more impressive. And let us not forget that epic ACCCG matchup with the 2nd best team in the State of South Carolina. We were all on the edges of our seats to find out which ACC team would be going to a BCS bowl to get completely demasculated on primetime national television. Congrats Georgia Tech. It was you. You beat an 8-4 team to win the ACC. Your prize? An arse whipping from a Big 10 team. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.

Georgia Tech went from #7 in the nation to 2nd in the state in the time it takes Caleb King to sprint 75 yards. Maybe at that point Manboobs should have realized he wasn’t playing Wake Forest and made some adjustments.

Georgia Tech football is overrated.

Our problem with Josh’s passing game is quite simple, every pass he attempted was over 25 yards, Coach PJ needs to help our QB by running possesion routes 5 to 20 yard’s and then Nesbitt should find his rhythm and confidence too .If CPJ does this with our rushing attack and solidifies our defense next season “then a NC could be in our future”…THWG

do you techsters want to really know whats wrong the tech football program? and you guys will soon see.your coach and his system. no way you guys will win more than 7 to 8 games now that gailys players are gone.cpj didnt even play football thus he is having to coach a high school offense that has about 6 plays in the playbook. of those 6 one play doesnt even snap the ball. the qb just satnds there and say hut hut hut hoping a def-linemen will jump offsides. just pathetic. no way is cpj a better coach than CMR. pj players are not getting drafted this year gailys are. pj has one player that i know of thats has played on the pros and he was drafted like in the 6th round. and that is adrian peterson the one who played for the bears not vikes.

ga tech team is on the decline while uga is going back up now that our young guys are getting another year older. tech will .look like ga southern out there trying ro compete with the big boys and look for coach pj to either quit in a few years or ga tech lets him go due to wasy too many losses to uga and the rest of the better teams in college football. with pj players running that high school offense and not gailys, they might have 250 total yards. they have no passing game so the better receivers and better qbs will go else where. you might get a running back every now and again but he will be maybe the 10th best back in the state.

they didnt beat stafford or moreno..stafford had over 400 yards passing and moreno ran all over you. uga gave that game away with 3 turnovers and about 7 missed tackles. it was a fluke and as long as pj is there tech will not win another game against the bulldogs.

atl-xmen, just a couple of years ago, all of the mutt nation laughed at the thought of losing to CPJ’s “high school” offense. The “fluke” that you speak off was HARDLY a fluke….the third quarter alone was a thorough example of what this offense can do. Mathew Staffords pass for interception was a nice touch and Moreno didn’t break the century mark in the entire game. Forgive us “techsters” if we don’t heed your bark…..we’re going to stick with CPJ and we’ll continue to be excited about our quarterback’s attention for Heisman. Hell, at least we know who our quarterback will be. Thank you for your thoughts, though. Forgive us if we don’t offer you a penny for them.

macrotech..the mutts are still laughing because now that techs div1 players are being replaced by div 1aa players tech will not only lose but lose very badly to uga and the better teams in college football.

and that fluke win. uga gave tech the ball 3 times to tech on uga’s 20 in that 3rd qt. moreno didnt break the 100 yrd mark because stafford was throwing it all over the field with ease. no need to run when you can do that. again it was a fluke and this year will prove it yet again with a uga beatdown of ga tech in athens.
