Tech hires Speed to fill coaching staff — updated at 1:10
Georgia Tech filled out its football coaching staff with the hiring on Joe Speed today. He will coach inside linebackers.
Speed has spent the past four seasons at Navy, where he coached the secondary. Overall, Speed has spent eight seasons as a coach in Annapolis, which was broken up by a two-year stint as football coach and athletics director at the Naval Prep Academy in Newport, R.I. Speed graduated from Annapolis in 1996, and joined the Marines as a commissioned Second Lieutenant. Speed played safety at Navy for four seasons, with 260 tackles and five interceptions.
The linebackers job opened when Brian Jean-Mary accepted a position at Louisville.
“Joe worked six years with me at Navy and I saw first-hand what a good football coach he is,” Tech coach Paul Johnson said in a statement. “He will do a great job for us, on the field and off, and he will be a great representative of Georgia Tech.”
Speed joins defensive coordinator Al Groh, defensive line coach Andy McCollum and A-backs coach Lamar Owens as new assistant coaches on the staff of the defending ACC champs.

I hope all of these coaching changes end up making the defense better. Not saying they could have gotten much worse from last season, but what does it do to a group of kids that want to step up and fill big shoes when they are now playing for a different set of leaders and have to learn a completely different system? Hopefully, they stay humble, work hard, learn, and get fired up to play anyone and everyone on the roster…that’s the attitude that CPJ tries to instill, so let’s see if the defense can out-work the offense this year.

I am very impressed with the coaching staff D Rad & Coach PJ have put together at GT!
This group of coaches will develop our young men into better players and I feel certain each player will also be better as a person after spending several years learning about both football and life from these coaches. I am sure having so many high character men on staff will also help recruiting. What parent would not want their child to spend quality time with so many great role models while also obtaining a well respected college degree??
I have said it before and I will most definitely say it again……..the future is VERY bright at GT!

The Navy DBs he coached were small, slow and hit like a hammer. Ask Notre Dame. The Tech LBs are big, quick and had better learn to hit like a hammer or they will be out of a job.
This guy coached circles around Weiss at ND.
Sorry, the ND games were the only Navy games I watched last 2 years.

For those who weren’t aware; Navy played the 3-4 base defense, so Coach Speed is already familiar with what he’s coming into and he’ll be ready to get to work quickly with the players. He’s also going to bring a great addition to the mix to the coaching ranks of a younger coach these kids are going to get excited about. He’ll also be great on the recruiting trail. GREAT HIRE.

Based upon the defense that Navy put of the field the last couple of years, this guy should help. Navy generally had smaller players but those kids really hit hard and they rarely fell off of tackles.

GTChris, Our three best recruiters were on the D side of the ball and the roster was set up to run a 4-3 defense. Situation has changed and he has tweaked the staff to make sure hes has the right blend of young and old. Speed is known as an up and comer who is bot technically sound and a good recruiter.

I can’t help but notice that the AJC writes a story on how much each new coaching hire UGA makes. The folks at Tech want equal coverage in the sports section for their program.
So come on AJC. Let’s see the story on how much the last two coaches hired by Tech since they got their DC will make. Or do you only do that to UGA because the AJC is a Tech Tool?

The one thing I noticed about Navy this year was their CBs and LBs play. Very tough. I was especially impressed with the DBs. They knew how to tackle and hit hard. We have some great CBs coming in. Welcome to the staff coach.

Suzy L. you have to remember that these GT fans think a #13 finish qualifies as great. They lose 2 of their last 3 and you’d think they won the NC. GT football has been lost in the wilderness for the last 50 years but they see themselves as relevant. They hire a HC that has made it a point to set himself up as the big fish in the smallest pond his entire career and when Auburn came calling wasn’t man enough to take himself and his TO to the big stage. The entire GT football program is 2nd tier and always will be. At GT mediocrity = great. You have to remember that Suzy. When they pull out those leather helmet era Farmer’s Almanac, Redbook, and Women’s Garden Club NCs you know how pitiful their program is. If those titles meant anything Princeton and Yale would be the 2 greatest programs to ever lace a pair of cleats. It’s Tech Suzy. They have the most massive case of little man syndrome ever recorded and it leads them to say some very stupid things in order to overcome that self loathing issue they have from being unfortunate enough to be Tech fans. How would you feel Suzy? Every year you choke and collapse at seasons end. And once again the disappointment wraps itself around you like a cold wet blanket. Like last year, I’m excited already about watching GT ball…these seem to be the most exciting years since WWII for GT..Bobby had those older Vets & sorta hired his friends from local high schools, e.g., Grady, Valdosta, etc., …so we could regularly beat Tulane, Duke, Navy,..Bobby left in mid-60s when the talent ran out and GT has been out of the recruiting cycle…now everything has stepped up a few knotches and it sure is fun to watch….

He’s got his work cut out for him, especially with the best defensive players leaving early. Via ESPN360, I went back and watched the UGA running game against GT. GT D-Linemen linemen tossed apart like they were on coat hangers, linebackers juked by one cut +/or laughably out of position, and a secondary more interested in piggyback rides than tackles. Let him use his walker and my 78 year-old grandpa could have kept the chains moving against that unit.
I suppose Tech’s defense will never be effective against good pro-style offenses since they practice against the option. Had A.J. Green played, the game would have rivaled 51-7 on the GT humiliation scale.

Just got off work from the Best Buy Geek Squad. Glad to see the news on the new LB coach. My boss is a Georgia State grad. He’s pumped about their football program getting started and wonders why GT hasn’t been willing to schedule them yet. I told him it had nothing to do with fear, but he laughed at me and asked why GT has never scheduled GA Southern. I had no answer for him.

I’m not saying anything but sometimes where there is smoke there is fire….I can’t take responsibility for anything to do with GDOT except for working closely with Wayne Shackelford earlier in my career. May he RIP. I did ace a transportation engineering course or two back in the day but designing roads were boring. The red lights btw are to control traffic so the road ahead has a monitored flow and volume. You seem bright enough or at least geeky enough to understand that flow in = flow out. If you want to get to your final destination on 285, there are only so many cars that can get on the road at once.

If you wanna go back further than ten years, go the whole way. Almost a full two wins to every one of yours. Depending on what news paper that you read, Tech, Miami, Colorado and I believe Notre Dame were all declared NC. In Kansas City, they proclaimed Colorado as NC and in Chcago it was ND and in NY and Miami and even in Tampa, it was for sure Miami.
Now in Chattanooga, and Charlotte ( tech tied N Carolina is 90 ) it was split between tech AND North Carolina. The AJC did declare Tech as NC. Most of Futon Conty did too.
A tie with North Carolina is not depicting of a NC now is it???

Anybody notice Navy’s defense in that Wisconsin bowl game. They would use a two man front and the rest of the field were skilled linebackers and safeties. The defense not the offense won that game for Navy. I think we are seeing the second stage of development at Tech. There are a lot of great athletes that are tweener, too short or small or slow for a particular position if played conventionally but great athletes no one wanted because of this “handicap”. PJ harvest this talent plus he has the Hope scholarship which allows even more tweener to come to Tech instead of going to the southern conference or wherever the barely miss go. PJ learned to use a 100 man roster at Navy to his advantage in practice. I think when we saw App. State beat Michigan and William and Mary beat Virginia we saw a lot of throw away talent being used to beat bigger schools. This also gives the tween time to grow, some of these kids turn into pro prospects after they grow into their bodies. There is something going on here that is a sea change in college football, yet barely noticed by the press. No one believes it yet but they will. The Big Ten was back this year after a long hibernation. Navy beat one of their best with very inferior talent, Tech won the ACC. Tech will be better next year just as Navy is getting better than even when Johnson was there and still is the laboratory for Tech football.

I wonder how many national titles UGA and others would have if they counted every little obscure publication that named them champion? We like to count all those obscure publications from before the modern era, but isn’t that rather disingenuous? Being named the “Ma and Pa Kettle National Champion” back in 1917 or 1928 doesn’t really hold much weight, does it? I think my great grandfather named his own national champion annually back then. It would be interesting to see how many other schools actually count those obscure titles. I’m guessing not many. Besides, I’m pretty sure Old Man Smithers disagreed with Ma and Pa Kettle’s choices back in 1917 and 1928. He chose Alabama both years. I doubt Alabama even bothers counting those titles.

Tech goes 4th or 5th in the ACC ………….they will be passed up by BOTH the Weedeater and the Boise Blue Carpet Bowl. Actually, the Weedeater ( Independence ) is severing ties to the SEC in 2010 and they are picking up the ACC’s 4th or 5th place team. I am serious. If true, what a joke for the jackets to show up in Shreveport for Shoney’s two for one strawberry pie deals. They will need to win it however. AAAAAAHAHAHAH 30-24

I have a six figure job and the only unemployed people I know are my friends who graduated from Tech, and the people on 10th Avenue asking me for a dollar, while I am on my way to my house in Highlands. Don’t worry though I hear Al Qaeda is recruiting GT grads! Get real people “We Run This State” and we definetly run ATL!

UGA Grad- that’s funny, I don’t know a single Tech grad that is unemployed right now, and I know hundreds personally. If you really have a six figure job, congrats, I am sure it was hard work rather than any degree you were given in Athens that got you there. Of course, that is assuming by six figures you are not counting the cents…

That’s pretty funny there Blue Carpet- you are making fun of the bowl that UGA just attended in Shreveport while projecting that Tech will be there next year? Somehow that is supposed to be a slam on Tech, comparing something that has already happened to what you hope will happen. How about if Tech wins the ACC again and gets a second BCS game in a row while UGA finishes 4th again in the East. What’s your excuse for that?

BuzztheKiller: Thing about it though is “ACC champs” is basically meaningless when the two participants in the ACC Title game were beaten the week prior by two SEC teams (their in-state rivals) that were mediocre at best in 2009. Then when we got to our first ever BCS bowl game, we pooped the bed against Iowa.

BuzztheKiller: The point that other guy made about the bowls was that our season which included a trip to a BCS bowl and their season that ended with a trip to the Weedeater Bowl were both aberrations. If you know your history of both schools, it’s impossible for us to argue that fact.

Update to BuzztheKiller: My buddy who is a Business Grad from GT just got hired at Home Depot, not the corporate office! It was through hard work that I succeded but graduating from an elite institution that has been running this state since the 18th Century, not to mention two of our founders signed the Decleration of Independence definetly helps. Next time your at the Capital Building take a look at the right ring finger of most of your elected officials, you will find a beautiful piece of gold with the arches on it! Go Dawgs!

LOTR- by your comments, doubting your right to be called a Tech fan. The Orange bowl loss was certainly a downer, but unless its the big one, bowls are a reward and a consolation prize. Conference titles are what lasts. It does not matter who we beat or who we lost to earlier in the year-ACC champs will always be the title on the trophy and hanging from the stands. As for my history as a fan, I assure you it goes back further than most of you posters have been living. I do not accept second place to UGA or anyone else!
As for unemployed jackets, I am sure there are many as there are millions unemployed right now, my comment was that I did not know any personally. That is the truth.
UGA Grad- I am sure your buddy will do fine, hard work will always pay off. Sometimes you have start low to climb high, and his experience at Tech will certainly help. Maybe if you were a better friend you would not be looking down on his taking an entry level job but instead encouraging him about doing what is necessary. If you are bragging about UGA grads being politicians, wow, you win that one. Not sure that a state politician is really a career to brag about.

LOTRJacket Fake: The guys I know who actually graduated from Tech would be embarrassed of you, just as some of our fans embarrass me. However, any educated person with half a bone of honesty in their body is able to admit that both GT and UGA are excellent schools of higher learning. GT is tops for those pursuing a technical career, and UGA is tops for those who wish to pursue careers in business, education, law, vet. medicine, and yes agriculture. I am sure however, that you have never had the great priveledge of stepping foot on either of our great schools of higher education. I adire all die hard fans that support their schools however, you are not in that category, you my friend are simply a hater!

That’s true, LOTRJacket. GT had a pretty good run through a weak ACC but the season was crushed by the way it ended. The loss to UGA and the way Iowa totally shut down our gimmick offense in our one shot in a BCS bowl really hurt. Based on the way LSU and Iowa totally obliterated our offense in our two bowl games under CPJ, I have my doubts we’ll ever win a bowl game under CPJ. Of course, we typically end up on the blue turf in Boise or other bottom of the barrel bowls like the Emerald Nut Bowl so there’s always hope. Even with all that time to prepare, a team like Utah State probably still couldn’t shut our offense completely down like LSU and Iowa did. Our best run of the modern era was the one O’Leary had for a few years and it was only due to an academic scandal. Oh well, it is what it is. We’ve got bigger fish to fry.

Buzz the Killer: I agree with you about politicians, Im just trying to counter all the arguments about UGA simply being a bunch of hicks. While we may have fans from all socio-economic backgrounds, you would be hard pressed to find an ignorant student on UGA’s or Tech’s campus. The UGA is dumb argument is simply a cop-out of the real debate over who has the better football team.

UGA grad – there are a lot of ignorant UGA FANS…not really grads except the people that know nothing about football and just go to the games for a social event (which every school has)…I myself am a die hard GT fan and hate UGA athletics, but am a UGA graduate…
