Tech hires Speed to fill coaching staff — updated at 1:10

Georgia Tech filled out its football coaching staff with the hiring on Joe Speed today. He will coach inside linebackers.

Speed has spent the past four seasons at Navy, where he coached the secondary. Overall, Speed has spent eight seasons as a coach in Annapolis, which was broken up by a two-year stint as football coach and athletics director at the Naval Prep Academy in Newport, R.I. Speed graduated from Annapolis in 1996, and joined the Marines as a commissioned Second Lieutenant. Speed played safety at Navy for four seasons, with 260 tackles and five interceptions.

The linebackers job opened when Brian Jean-Mary accepted a position at Louisville.

“Joe worked six years with me at Navy and I saw first-hand what a good football coach he is,” Tech coach Paul Johnson said in a statement. “He will do a great job for us, on the field and off, and he will be a great representative of Georgia Tech.”

Speed joins defensive coordinator Al Groh, defensive line coach Andy McCollum and A-backs coach Lamar Owens as new assistant coaches on the staff of the defending ACC champs.

I am hoping that Coach Speed will also coach up our perfect option offense and allow us to break our streak of 5 straight bowl losses and the fact that our offense hasn’t scored more than 10 points in a bowl game.

Great hire – I look forward to seeing him at GT. CPJ has built a great staff.

Ugaggers have little man syndrome. AJC announces a Tech hire for football and you come on here to taunt and trash the coach and the program – give it a rest jackarses. Count on it that CPJ will never lose to ugag again while he is at GT.

Like last year, I’m excited already about watching GT ball…these seem to be the most exciting years since WWII for GT..Bobby had those older Vets & sorta hired his friends from local high schools, e.g., Grady, Valdosta, etc., …so we could regularly beat Tulane, Duke, Navy,..Bobby left in mid-60s when the talent ran out and GT has been out of the recruiting cycle…now everything has stepped up a few knotches and it sure is fun to watch….

Hey Dan… last time I checked, the only thing mediocre is a UGA education. In the end, that is what this is all about. Not to say that one cannot get a very good education at UGA but that would require advanced degrees for certain. In 4 years at Tech, you can be set for life. At UGA, you can be a reporter, writer, or sell insurance. Regardless, guys like you need a punch in the mouth….I’m sure you got your ass waxed in college and are simply trying to be tough on a blog….too funny.

All the UGA(ly) posts I’ve read simply confirm why Tech rules when it comes to class and stature. We all know that sports is all the poor Dawgs have to brag about. And even tough their 1980 title was 30 years ago, let them enjoy it. What has UGA(ly) done lately on the National scene?

Oh yeah, THWG!

Fair Play, I’ve reported the details of each contract as soon as they are available. The last two, McCollum and Speed, aren’t available. If you missed the first two I suggest you set up an RSS feed to the AJC’s coverage, and sign up for coverage on twitter @ajcgatech or on facebook @ AJC Ga. Tech.

Coach Speed was a good, tough football player. He was a Marine officer. This adds up to physical and mental toughness. Tech players better get ready or they might find themselves on the sidelines. There will be no quitting on this coach’s ship.

He’s got his work cut out for him, especially with the best defensive players leaving early. Via ESPN360, I went back and watched the UGA running game against GT. GT D-Linemen linemen tossed apart like they were on coat hangers, linebackers juked by one cut +/or laughably out of position, and a secondary more interested in piggyback rides than tackles. Let him use his walker and my 78 year-old grandpa could have kept the chains moving against that unit.

I suppose Tech’s defense will never be effective against good pro-style offenses since they practice against the option. Had A.J. Green played, the game would have rivaled 51-7 on the GT humiliation scale.

“And the truth shall set you free….”, you got your ACC Champ arses torn up in your own stadium in November by a very, very weak UGA team. How does that feel? Are you crying? There’s no crying in football, nerd. Now go on out and buy yourself a brand new pocket protector; I’m sure you’ll feel much better. You’d better hurry because you know what happens around the GT campus after dark. Can you say muggings? Can you say armed robbery? Can you say pi$$ing your pants while handing over your wallet, watch, jewelry, laptop, etc.?

Just got off work from the Best Buy Geek Squad. Glad to see the news on the new LB coach. My boss is a Georgia State grad. He’s pumped about their football program getting started and wonders why GT hasn’t been willing to schedule them yet. I told him it had nothing to do with fear, but he laughed at me and asked why GT has never scheduled GA Southern. I had no answer for him.

Get ready to get taken to the woodshed this November. The nerds got lucky in 2008 and vandalized our beautiful stadium on their way out; UGA remembers that and will use it as motivation for yet another NATS smack-down.

Just for you GTOldSchool21. Since it bent you out of shape the first time here’s a repeat sugar britches.

Suzy L. you have to remember that these GT fans think a #13 finish qualifies as great. They lose 2 of their last 3 and you’d think they won the NC. GT football has been lost in the wilderness for the last 50 years but they see themselves as relevant. They hire a HC that has made it a point to set himself up as the big fish in the smallest pond his entire career and when Auburn came calling wasn’t man enough to take himself and his TO to the big stage. The entire GT football program is 2nd tier and always will be. At GT mediocrity = great. You have to remember that Suzy. When they pull out those leather helmet era Farmer’s Almanac, Redbook, and Women’s Garden Club NCs you know how pitiful their program is. If those titles meant anything Princeton and Yale would be the 2 greatest programs to ever lace a pair of cleats. It’s Tech Suzy. They have the most massive case of little man syndrome ever recorded and it leads them to say some very stupid things in order to overcome that self loathing issue they have from being unfortunate enough to be Tech fans. How would you feel Suzy? Every year you choke and collapse at seasons end. And once again the disappointment wraps itself around you like a cold wet blanket. Every year it’s like the inevitable setting of the sun in the west. Same old Tech…same old $hit. Tech fans have it tough Suzy. Show some compassion.

You are spot on John. Paul Johnson learned that the hard way this year in that 30-24 thing. #7 lost to # nothing. You should send that little bit of wisdom to Paul Johnson. He nor his team are good enough to taunt anybody.

Funny how # nothing took your “great” team to the woodshed and had your “great” coach heaving and hoping like football’s version of Barney Fife at the end of the game with # nothing. Of course none of that registers on you “great” fans that attend every game disguised as an empty seat. Are those invisible hot dogs and invisible cokes any good?
