McCollum joins Tech staff — updated
Georgia Tech has hired Andy McCollum as defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator.
Formerly N.C. State’s linebackers coach, McCollum is from Marietta and his father still resides there. The hire still must be approved by Tech.
“We will be happy to have a coach with the experience and knowledge that Andy will bring to our program,” Tech coach Paul Johnson said in a statement given to the media. “I have coached against and recruited against him for a long time, and I am confident he will do an outstanding job here at Tech.”
McCollum, 50, recruited Atlanta for the Wolfpack, where he’s been for the past three seasons. He replaces Giff Smith, who recently accepted a job with the Buffalo Bills.
“I am excited to be a part of a great coaching staff and to work with Coach Johnson,” McCollum said in statement given to the media. “It’s a great opportunity to come back home to Georgia and work at an outstanding school.”
Details of McCollum’s contract weren’t released. He made $176,570 at N.C. State and was eligible to receive a bonus of $47,250. Smith made $189,000.
Before being hired at N.C. State, McCollum was the head coach at Middle Tennessee State from 1999-2005, where he led the Blue Raiders to the Sun Belt Conference title in 2001.
As a recruiter, he brought in the conference’s highest-rated classes in 2002, ‘04 and ‘05.
Before being named MTSU’s coach, he was the linebackers/special teams coordinator at Baylor (1994-98), linebackers, wide receivers coach and special teams coordinator at UTEP (1989-93), and did a variety of coaching jobs at MTSU (1981-88).

DAWG FANS UR SEARCHING…. each of the new coaches are doing a smaller part than what they just had to do at previous place… there diving into there new duties not being a head coach of a div 1 football team like im sure all of you dawg fans can do and the other is not running an entire defense … position and recruiting
ur over looking the fact of these ppl have ran the big picture and been king of there own personal castle at one point…. knowing what it takes to make it happen… acceptable a smaller role in asserting the pieces of a puzzle that are needed because they wanna be apart of a run…
congrats you run the state… thanks to a dropped football… good win
but the 08 when you honored everything that made you bring munson out and dooley statue …. was a just a little more sweeter… georgia tech is the most relevant thing you have… dont forget…

Not only are dawgs dumb, delusional and irrelevant, they can’t comprehend that Georgia Tech graduates move all over the word and are successful, unlike most dawgs who never leave the trailer parks within 50 miles of Athens.
While I would prefer the dawgs lose in football as they do in life, the only time it really matters is the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

I like the way Paul Johnson builds a program. 1st year – 9 wins, beats in-state rival, conference coach of the year. 2nd year – 11 wins, conference title, BCS bowl game.. Tweaks coaching staff with phenomenal moves, solid recruiting, etc. Most programs fall off a little after a regime change. Not Paul Johnson’s. Great hire.

Any team can beat any other team on any given Saturday. Try to act like adults for once in your life and quit trying to incite stupid remarks between each, especially know full well, neither of you would say these things face to face or to your respective coaches. Coach McCollum has released a statement concerning his move to Georgia Tech:
“I am excited about the opportuninty to coach at a program like Georgia Tech. I look forward to playing in a 55,000 seat stadium that is 75% full, beating Georgia once every nine years, and getting smoked in bowl games. At Tech’s current rate, they will win their next outright ACC title in 19 years and that has me very excited. I look forward to competing with the best of the best in the ACC. I truly feel that if you can beat UNC, Duke, Virginia, and Clemson that you can beat anybody, unless of course the game doesn’t matter. I am relieved to coach at a program where winning every game on the schedule is not the goal and there are always bigger fish to fry.”
Great hire for the nerdherd. Maybe this guy can help Paul Johnson the Genius figure out what to do in hurry up 2 minute situations. He needs all the help he can get.

Georgia NEW DC is super excited to help lead his team even though there will be 70 tons of trash , in a stadium in the shape of a toilet bowl, constant barking animals i mean human beings around, alot of underachieving, alot of next year, a soft head coach, wont even use uga paper to wipe FLA and BAMAS ass…. should i got on???? I love it! Coach Manboobs Johnson broke out the brownpants at Historic Mark Richt Field this year – then he laid logs in his drawers again against the Big Slow Ten in the bees’ first meaningful bowl game since 1967. What a putz!

This is probably one of the greatest additions we have made to our defenses in a long time. This guy KNOWS how to coach! I guarantee our defense is going to be sick this year!! McCollum tore it up last year at NC State and we should be lucky to have him on our squad. Mark my words….you will see this guy take it to the next level.
