Georgia Tech’s Derrick Favors took ACC rookie of the week honors for the third time this season. The 6-foot-10 forward from South Atlanta averaged 12.0 points and 7.5 rebounds while Tech lost to Duke Thursday and beat N.C. State on Saturday.
Favors had 16 points, eight rebounds and three blocks in Tech’s 73-71 over the Wolfpack. In his past two games he made 10-of-12 (.833) field goals.
Favors is tied with Wake Forest’s C.J. Harris for the ACC lead in scoring by a rookie (11.3 points per game). He leads all ACC rookies in rebounding (8.5) and double-doubles (7).

Congratulations, again.
Favors is so smooth he (sometimes) looks slow and some (poorly informed/ignorant) Tech fans use derogatory remarks about his style and/or effort. I’ll bet many of those “criticizers” will miss him next year.

With all of the recent complaints, about Favors and the team in general, by the Yellow Jacket faithful on the AJC blogs, we should remember that he is a freshman. Favors will be ACC Rookie of the Year and we will miss him next year.

Favors has talent for sure, but let’s be honest. If he had to go up against a quality forward in the NBA, it would not be pretty right now. I know he can’t improve his draft status very much, but…he could really benefit from another year in the ACC.

I agree man everone was so tough on Hewitt after the NC state debacle. And we were ahead by a lot of points. Yeah we self destructed, but we were ahead as well. And the blog talked about how bad NC State is. Well in other coferences, you don’thave the tream in dead last at 2-7 haing its wins against Duke and FSU on the road. Acc has a bit tougher competition as you go down the list.
How can you say Hewitt can’t coach when our team is in the top 5 naitonally in FG % defense. Thats a national ranking. You don’t get there without great coaching. Granted I am unhappy at times on lack of movement on offense. But lets face it, Cremins was no offensive mastermind either. This team really does move a lot more at times and at times the less movement off the ball issue shows up.
Of couse I would want more consistency. Anyone would, including Hewitt. But a lot of the inconsistency is due to lack of expierence or lack of talent. This year we only have lack of experience with so many underclassmen.
Its not like you can’t see when certain players get lax defensively. And those of you who say there is no reason to hewitts substitutions…..you are looking at the wrong side of the ball. Hewitt will pull for a defensive blunder much quicker than popping a shot without the offense set.
Remember that HEwitts teams get much better down the stretch and I expect a 4-4 or 6-2 down the stretch. Really any less and we don’t make the dance anyway. But its not like you can beat up on the small teams this year.

Well said Tech Hoops! Im glad someone has some perspective on this team. I dont see Favors leaving just like Gani Lawal and Al-Farouq Aminu, of Wake Forest, didnt leave after last season. Favors has things to work on before moving up.

Those of you saying Favors needs another year in the ACC are absolutely correct. But he’ll still leave because so many NBA teams draft on the basis of “potential.” I just hope we see a little more of that “potential” before he bolts.

I’ve seen three games on TV, and I have yet to see Favors get the ball 12-15 feet out and make a move to the basket.
The only scores I’ve seen is when he is out front on a fast break, or with an easy putback. Am I missing something? Please enlighten me. I would be a crying shame if he left for the NBA after this season.

Congrats to Derrick Favors, Continue to grow and always strive. Push yourself thru adversity and hold your head high. Continue to gain strength and increase your stamina. You are amazingly talented, skillful, educated and humble. Those traits will take you a very long way. Goodluck on your remaining season at GT. Best of luck with whatever you decide to do after this year. God Bless U!!!

you mean uga would be better with him, not the other way around.
I’m not sure playing for an unranked last place team in the middle of nowhere is his cup of tea.

Nothing mouthier than a UGAy fan on a Tech blog. Why don’t you Mo-Rons go post on your own blog?
