Not that you can see for yourself on TV, but it’s Coaches vs. Cancer day at Georgia Tech and Paul Hewitt is donning sneakers with his suit and yellow tie, as is tradition for coaches around the country to wear one day promoting cancer awareness and early detection.
More than two dozen cancer patients and their caregivers are at today’s game courtesy of Hewitt through his relationship with the Winn-Dixie Hope Lodge in Atlanta, which houses cancer patients from out of town who are receiving treatment in Atlanta area hospitals.
As a person with a brother who has chronic lymphocytic leukemia and gets his treatment here at Emory, I give a big shout out to all the efforts of people, and organizations like this. Thankfully, he’s in remission and doing great at the moment, but it’s so meaningful to know there are places like this to help take care of folks when they need it most.
As for the hoops going on today? Ought to be pretty lopsided, and the kind of day against Division II Kentucky State where Tech’s shooters can build up some confidence, the offense can keep trying to grow, and some starters can get some rest, allowing players like Moe Miller, Lance Storrs, Nick Foreman and Brad Sheehan some minutes.
Clarence Moore, now interim coach for Kentucky State, is back in the gym today, the former sixth man on the 2004 Tech team. I’m sure this is a meaningful day for him.
This was originally supposed to be a preseason game, but Tech couldn’t find another suitable opponent for this weekend and voila, here you have the last non-conference game of the regular season for Tech. (Surely there will be a couple in March.)
Last game of January. Tech should take care of things today and move on into the biggest month this side of well….March. Off we go. Jump on today if you want information you can’t get on the radio or whatnot. Glad to help.
In the meantime, if you’re looking for some reading while listening to the game, here’s a story I did this week on Travis Grant, the former Kentucky State Thorobred, who went into the National Collegiate Hall of Fame in November as the leading scorer in college basketball history. If you didn’t know that, it’s time….(and this is a shameless way to promote my own story. Ha!)
http://www.ajc.com/sports/travis-grant-gets-recognition-286115.html
Also, here’s a nice story Matt Winkeljohn did on Moore this week if you didn’t see it already, have a look!

Fans just gave Clarence Moore a nice welcome…..but ahem, where are the students? The rest of the crowd is better than the giant void in the student section behind the goal near the Tech bench. Wow. roll out of bed and come over here, Techsters. What else is there to do – study?!

Sad to say, but as much as all Tech fans should admire Clarence Moore for what he has accomplished, not to mention his leadership at Tech in 2004, this is just not a very attractive game for this point in the season. Hats off to Hewitt for scheduling the game, but I just wish it had been earlier in the season, with a potentially more meaningful game being played now.

Supersize, I think you’re talking about the Charlotte game, when Favors did it on the fast break. It’s a little different when you have to catch the ball first, in the air, on an alley-oop pass, and dunk it on a reverse in one motion….Was that the one you were thinking of?

Something to chew on….After the game, I asked Clarence Moore if he thought this Tech team was Final Four caliber…Awfully interesting response:
“I’ve seen a few games this season, and I don’t see a leader out there. To me, it looks like guys are trying to find themselves. You have to have a vocal leader and someone who is willing to get on guys and know that he’s going to catch it at some point down the line as well. I would love to say that I was that guy and maybe some people would have said (so). I think we just did it as a team effort. Guys would be picking other guys up at certain times and also getting on each other and pushing one another. Even if they start holding each other accountable as a team, they’ll definitely be on their way. They have talent out there. You can clearly see it.”
I asked Hewitt about it and he agreed, actually. Talked about how he sees leadership lacking is when TEch doesn’t concentrate from one possession to another. And he commended Duke for how the Blue Devils always seem to have that focus every trip down the floor. It’s something he talked to them about today.
Duke lost big to Georgetown today, 89-77. That would seem to up the stakes for Thursday’s game at Cameron even more. Ought to be an interesting week.

I see D’Andre, Peacock and Gani, all as vocal leaders. and they do their share of talking in the huddle and leading off the court. …I guess what Paul and Moore were getting at too is that the leadership really has to come from everybody, if that makes any sense. That everybody has to play each possession like it means the world.
Buzzfan those are some amazing numbers Georgetown put up against Duke. Oh to be a fly on the wall when Duke is practicing defense this week. But hey, this team has had games like that. NC State made them look terrible on defense. So did Wisconsin.

Supersize, totally agree on the CPJ comment. Some of the dawg posters try to make a big deal out of CPJ saying “are you stupid?” to a player. There’s a world of difference between saying “are you stupid” vs. “you are stupid”. “Are you stupid” is something just about every person over the age of 15 has needed to hear at some point in their life. “You are stupid” is something that NO kid shoud have to hear.
