Lamar Owens has been promoted to coach Georgia Tech’s A-backs in the second hire for the school today.
Owens, who was a graduate assistant at Tech the past two seasons, played quarterback for Johnson at Navy.
“Lamar has a vast knowledge of the offense, having played quarterback for us at Navy and having been on the staff the last two years,” Johnson said in statement on Tech’s website, ramblinwreck.com. “I am confident Lamar will do an outstanding job for us and that he is ready for this role.”
Owens is a native of Savannah.
“I appreciate the confidence coach Johnson has shown in me and this tremendous opportunity,” Owens said in a statement on ramblinwreck.com. “Coach Johnson is building something special here at Tech and I’m fortunate to be a part of it.”

Great! Now we know who will take over play calling in a few years.
Staff intact for big recruiting period. Couldn’t be better.

LOL. I don’t think that High School RBs with NFL aspirations are going to think twice about assuming the A-Back position at Tech. I actually think that it will help them because they will get the chance to shine in a “limited” role before we promote one to the B-Back position the following year. It’s a great way to smooth out the learning curve.
Other than that, I, too, am glad that we promoted from within. Coach Paul Johnson must really like this guy if he has allowed him to stick around for so long. I expect great things to come from this.

To answer the question…an A back is a helluva lot better than a B back and certainly far superior to a C back. At UGA to achieve this status you have to be atleast diagnosed with a learning disability (see Hershel) or be able to pass the finals of Harrick, Jr. Pretty low standards by most other facilities of higher learning (DO NOT SEE Florida State!!!).
