Lawal named ACC Player of the Week

A big game against Duke helped land Gani Lawal his second career ACC player of the week award.

The Georgia Tech junior forward scored 21 points, had nine rebounds and hit a key turnaround jumper with 1:01 left to help defeat then No. 5 Duke 71-67 on Saturday. Lawal also scored 21 in Tech’s loss to Georgia earlier in the week.

Lawal scored 14 of his 21 points against Duke in the second half, and went 4-for-4 from the free throw line. He’s improved from a 55.6 percent free throw shooter to 70.6 percent this year. That might have something to do with his new positive mindset at the foul line.

“When I’m at the line I’m thinking ‘Indianapolis, Final Four,’” he said. “If I make free throws, it’ll be a key part of getting to Indianapolis, come April.”

Hey Gani, love you on the team and all but maybe think about beating UVA instead of getting to Indianapolis.

Congrats, Gani.

Nice to see you’re covering GT hoops, Mrs. Rogers. Is this a permanent thing?

Trying to keep it positive, but the offense looked scatter-brained again Saturday. Bilas even said their best play was throw it up there and let Gani go get it for the put back.

Despite that, I think I saw glimpses of Udofia and Oliver Saturday that could mean good things this year.

Like Sweet! said, tough sledding coming up, so we’ll see.

As far as I know, Angus, I’ll be covering Tech until we run into problems with spring training/the baseball season. Things could get hairy in late February and March but it’s all good so far. I’m enjoying being back on some ACC hoop.

And thanks Brunswick-Tech, I think it might be a little confusing for you readers right now, trying to figure out when to post what, where. we seem to be flooding the blogs pretty well with new posts, and I can see where it would get confusing. But hopefully that’ll get sorted out and we’ll drum up some real interest.

Easy there, ND. Hard to argue with what’s working for Lawal at the line right now, isn’t it? And any sports psychologist will tell you the key to success is blocking out negative things and focusing on positive ones. Going to the free throw line thinking about the Final Four? That to me is doing just that.

I went to high school with Gani, he is a very smart guy, humble, pretty funny too. He deserves all the love he is getting. I hope he does well in the NBA next year.
