Miami, Ft. Lauderdale or Plantation?!? Who cares. It’s Florida and it’s warm
8:53 pm December 30, 2009, by Doug Roberson
Woohoo! It’s 75 degrees outside, about 35 higher than in Douglasville at 1:30 Wednesday when I left.
Even better than the warmth……Cuban food. I loves me some Cuban food.
But, I digress.
There are lots and lots of interesting storylines to watch for in the upcoming Orange Bowl.
Here’s a few I’m most interested in, and would be interested to hear your t houghts on the subject, as well:
- Iowa’s large, tough defensive line, against Tech’s smaller, quicker, and tough, offensive line.
- How will Tech’s offense fare after a month off? Running offenses are generally characterized as physical and tough. Tech’s is both, but it also relies on timing. Will the timing be there after so many days off?
- Any hangover from the last trip to Miami earlier this season? I doubt it. I don’t really see a connection between a site and a result, but as I’ve often said, what do I know?
- How has Tech’s defense improved in its past 10+ practices?
- For a team that hasn’t appeared in one of the “Big Four” bowls in 40-plus years, what could this mean to the future of the Jackets’ program?
- How many Tech fans will be here? In my unofficial count, there were three Iowa fans on the plane down. No Tech fans. By fans, I mean someone who is wearing identifiable team gear. And, keep in mind, that is a highly scientific standard that can withstand all but the most intense scrutiny.
- And, I doubt there will be an answer to this question, but could this be the last game for more than one Tech junior?

Here’s a great read about an Iowa fan. Beware, it might get dusty whereever you read this: http://bit.ly/8aPRPV

If you are wondering about the title of the thread, the Orange Bowl has a Miami dateline, but its actually on the outskirts of Ft. Lauderdale. And I am staying in Plantation.

Our offense will trump their defense and our mediocre defense will stifle their mediocre offense. But anything can happen any given Thursday…

I don’t know what all my fans in dawg nation are talking about……but me being an intelligent coach and person there’s no argument about this……I’d take Tech’s 4 shinny National Championships any day over that silly one-on-one record between UGA and Tech…..just plain common sense I tell ya!

we don’t have 4 national title trophys because…we didn’t win 4 national titles. We DO have the ones I constructed out of paper and glue however. Are these the ones you speaketh of Vincent? I hate the fact I never beat a team you coached. You might say you ran me out of coaching. F#ck you for that.

Welcome to our part of the south – Doug. We live in Daytona Beach and, as season ticket holders, obviously have driven up to Atlanta for all the games. Here’s hoping that those TECH fans living in Atlanta and elsewhere in Georgia will come down to joins us in Miami Tuesday PM. Now for some thoughts:
Quick and tough always beats tough and slow.
Tech’s timing will be spot on because CPJ understands the significance of the prestige of the BCS Orange bowl and what a win will do for our program – unlike last year when the Peach bowl was anti-climatic to the win over UGA.
No hangover from the first trip down here to play Miami. In fact there will probably be some extra added incentive for the Jackets to play well in Miami just to prove a point to themselves.
The defense is still questionable until proven otherwise – and maybe they will – hopefully!
The future of the program hinges on doing two things consistently: 1) Beating UGA and 2) winning the ACC championship. Accomplish those two things and the program will be well on it’s way to national prominence again.
Lastly, as much as I don’t want anyone to leave the program now that we’ve finally got something good going on – I don’t worry about anyone leaving – period. As much as some of these guys mean to this team, everyone is replaceable. Don’t loose sight of the fact that CPJ has molded this team from player he did not recruit and made it work to every Tech fan’s delight. Why should you expect anything different from year to year when guys step out to take advantage of opportunities in the NFL? CPJ will find some one else to fill the gap and the program will go on. While it’s true the players you allude to are very special and led this program to where it is today – do not look for a total collapse when they are gone. We have a wealth of talent waiting for CPJ to mold into the next championship team.

That’s a major difference this time. NO BASEBALL INFIELD to inhibit footing for the run. That killed us last time out. It slows a run offense. Just ask the Miami Dolphins. R Williams complains about it all the time (in between tokes of the pipe).
GT will probably struggle in the first half until the timing comes back and CPJ is able to adjust to Iowa’s game plan. I just hope that CPJ doesn’t come up with a “cute” game plan. Stick to what go you here! Lots of Nesbitt, Dwyer, Jones, and then the home run to Bey Bey.

Doug – I’m already 2 hours south of you in the Keys, so I’ll be there on the 5th in my club seat for the game with my Tech items on. By the way, the game is actually played at Dolphin Stadium/Joe Robbie Stadium (not calling it Landshark, because it expires soon, at least before the Pro Bowl). And by the way, it is not located in Ft. Lauderdale, it is actually, Miami Gardens, which is a Miami suburban city located in Miami-Dade County, Florida.
Welcome to South Florida! Tech wins Jan 5 too!

Doug, do you know what color jersey Iowa will wear and do they get first pick? I got a feeling they will pull a WAKE ..and being that the colors are similar, I hope not.
I am leaving for Miami on Saturday. I bought my ticket via Ticketmaster so that I could get a lower level seat. I live outside of Charlotte and ready to get out of this cold.

I am concerned about the timing on offense what with the long layoff and all. Our defense is swiss cheese, and our only chance is that we out score them. Hope the O-line is fed some gun powder and onions for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Lastly, CPJ better take a close look at what happened to Leach and that fat boy at Kansas, my son is a Junior at Tech and knows several of the players on the team. CPJ is old school and he needs to take a look around.

By the way, what exactly is so intelligent about claiming you’re better than a team that beat you on a football field? Why do we even play the games genius? We can just have Techies tell us who is the best team. No need for games.
No need for 30-24 or 8 outta 9. Tech has the better program. Anybody that takes Calculus knows that. Duh.
LOL @ you idiots. Good luck “carrying the flag for the ACC” in the Orange Bowl. We’ll give it to you when the rest of the conferences are done wiping their butt with in the bowl games. ACC is a joke.

Doug: Thanks for the update. Looks like the gameday high will only be about 65, and the low around 50. So, enjoy the 70’s while you have them!! The greatest GT fan and I will be heading down on Monday decked out with GT stuff everywhere.
I think the players (and I know for sure PJ) are very determined to not let happen what happened last year in our bowl game. Although, I believe Iowa will show up and compete hard, I definitely think we will be determined like we were against VPI and in the ACCCG. Regarding your question about our defense improving over the last 10+ practices: The answer to that would be “no” in my opinion. I have seen nothing this year to make me believe that our DC has improved our overall defensive performance. I am hoping that Iowa’s lack of an explosive offense will allow our defense to look more like it did against UNC and UVA this year, and that our offense controls the time of possession as usual. If we have a solid showing on national TV in a BCS bowl, it will make future success even more likely during the PJ era at GT.
Go Jackets! Beat the HawkEyes!!

Doug Roberson, sir :
Other than a Cuban sandwich, what you have is goulash. God Awful Goulash. That and a lot of bread. Sorry, but I do not share, and neither does anyone else that what you report about food in Miami is that it is inedible and there aren’t any places to be found that are edible.
HOW CAN YOU LEAVE OFF HOW UNSAFE YOU FEEL THERE ?
Guess you get used to that in the slums of Atlanta where all our CRIME is and where ALL OUR DRUGS are, surrounding the Tech campus. They tried to gentrify the neighborhood, but those businesses are now closing. Major landmark anchor businesses for those business-shopping districts in the slums of a city of 6 million – such as Publix who is closing this week.
238 lbs. Left Tackle for GA tek, yeah, that’s small, and as for how tough he is, pardon me, Paul Johnson YANKED HIM for the last 4 plays of the game when he SCRAPPED his high school offense and threw 4 incomplete passes instead to END THE GAME 24-30.
If you want a STORY LINE for THIS game NO ONE WILL WATCH and NO ONE WILL ATTEND, especially NOT any of THESE GA tek fans in here posting to this biased blog of feel good about a team who played SIX GAMES against OPPONENTS who are NOT even in a damn bowl game – here you go : Iowa beat 1 team all season long and that team beat NO TEAM RANKED IN THE FINAL BCS TOP 34 TEAMS (Pennsylvania State.)
GA tek beat 1 team all season long too.
So, there you have it.
Iowa who beat 1 team (who beat no team in the BCS Final Top 34 teams) plays Georgia tek who played 6 games against teams who are NOT EVEN IN A DAMN BOWL GAME and GA tek also ONLY BEAT 1 TEAM ALL SEASON LONG.
Here those 2 are facing off against each other in crime-ridden, horrible food horrible restaurants of no choices but Goulash to eat with lots of bread – which is all they eat –Miami.
WORST TV RATING Orange Bowl.
WORST ATTENDANCE Orange Bowl.
And, you are what ?
Stuck for a story line.
Just be honest Doug Roberson, sir.
Tell the truth. Quit with the GA tek bias.
AJ-C doesn’t provide that bias for UGA in our blog, Bubba.
Not close.
TIMING ?
Timing was surely NOT THERE to have Paul Johnson scrap his high school offense and THROW 4 PASSES to END THE GAME.
4 passes that looked like WOUNDED DUCKS…
Yet, on that point in here Doug Roberson, sir, you sit there and “REPORT” that “Quarterback” Josh Nesbit is a “HEISMAN HOPEFUL.”
Right.
With his 38 games played and only 13 touchdown passes to 11 interceptions and another 23 fumbles.
Pre-Game, you were in here GUSHING as you are now about GA tek, Doug Roberson biased AJ-C reporter.
After the game, you tried to deflect that what you said pre-game DID NOT HAPPEN.
If you want to talk about Iowa GA tek, why not report that GA tek FIRED JON TENUTA and that Paul Johnson replaced JON TENUTA with the linebackers’ coach at So Miss as Paul Johnson’s DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR…
…and that UGA took the football and crammed it right down GA tek’s throat.
Right up the gut.
Every play.
That tech was NOT TOUGH,
Now, were they Doug Roberson, sir ?
40 years plus ?
Huh ?
1966 season. This is 2009.
That, Doug Roberson, is
43 years.
43 years since GA tek has even BEEN to a Major Bowl Game.
1955.
54 years since GA tek last won a Major Bowl Game.
How old are you Doug Roberson ?
I was alive in 1955.
1955.
God Almighty Above is all I can say and it begs the damn question if you are going to bring up GA tek’s Major Bowl DROUGHT of 54 years since GA tek won a Major Bowl Game, then (1) call them the Major Bowls and (2) say it’s been 54 years since GA tek last won a Major Bowl Game the 1955 season; and (3) say why haven’t any GA tek fans showed up for their 1st chance at a Major Bowl Victory in 54 years ?
Huh ?
Why not ?
Where are the so-called GA tek fans you supposedly address yourself too Doug Roberson, sir ?
1-3.ACC is 1-3 in bowl games.
UGA has been to 8 Major Bowls since GA tek LAST EVEN WENT TO ONE.
By the way, if you are going to discuss BOWL GAMES Doug Roberson :
7 of GA tek’s last 10 bowl games, GA tek has LOST.
GA tek has been to 13 straight consecutive bowl games now with this game, but is a miserable 5-7.
LOSING BOWL RECORD over this span bragged about of GA tek having been to a Bowl Game 13 consecutive years.
UGA has been to a Bowl Game 13 Consecutive Years too, and UGA is :
NOT 5-7 like GA tek last 13 consecutive bowls now, but 2 LOSSES.
13 consecutive bowl games, 11-2, UGA.
13 consecutive bowl games, 5-7, GA tek.
Now, that’s just me Doug Roberson.
What do I know about college football and try to report an unbiased retort to a soul-searching on your part Doug Roberson AJ-C beat writer for GA tek for a damn story line where you discuss bowl games but fail to mention that GA tek doesn’t even have a single not 1 player on the GA tek team who has EVER WON A BOWL GAME in his entire career at GA tek.
13 consecutive bowl games for GA tek, INDEED.
Just be honest.
Not a homer.
-0- tech fans. That’s an honest report.
Will be -0- at the game too. Why not report that the facts are that GA tek cannot give away 2 free hotdogs, 4 free Coca-Colas, 2 bags of boiled peanuts and a free parking pass to get a single GA tek fan to buy a ticket to 1 game for your so-called GA tek fans you address yourself to in such a biased fashion daily Doug Roberson.
48.
# 48 in the nation attendance GA tek.
THOSE ARE ALL UGA FANS.
We buy season tickets for the GA tek football and throw away all the tickets but our game.
We own GA tek at Bobby Dodd Stadium (named after a University of Tennessee at Knoxville college DROP-OUT.)
The AJ-C reports that there are 29,700 GA tek alumni in the readership of the AJ-C.
And, there are of course a third of a million UGA alumni by direct comparison in your readership.
5.
Only 5 teams have more ATTENDANCE than UGA.
GA tek # 48 in Attendance.
No GA tek fan on the plane down ?
Duh….
Easy to spot the GA tek fans.
Slide rule hanging out their pants, pocket protector in their pocket and YELLOW wearing YELLOW.
Which of course, is the color of cowards.
Cowards who LOG ON as for example St. Simons pre-game and BRAG of the DESTROY UGA, but after the game, has YET to EVEN LOG IN as St. Simons, despite repeated attempts by me to call St. Simons out to have a pair and face the medicine.
Oh, he replied with a different handle that he didn’t think that 30-24 was DESTROYING of GA tek by UGA.
Less than a TD.
But, it was not I, nor any of the rest of us who come in here daily to call out 1 St. Simons to log in as St. Simons as he did for all this time and keep that just 1 handle.
And, take his medicine.
DISH IT OUT, can’t take it.
Of course, GA tek fans try to tell me it’s old gold.
YELLOWjackets.
Lived here all my life.
Dunwoody.
I do believe I know what color a damn YELLOWjacket is.
Like you guys trying to pass off a 1930 automobile for the AJ-C headlines of 1893 that a train wrecked outside of Lawrenceville with the cheaters from GA tek onboard stoned by UGA fans who recognized that THOSE WERE NOT GA tek students playing against us, but football players you HIRED FOR MONEY to play us.
RAMBLIN’ WRECK RETURNS TO ATLANTA, the headlines read with picture of WRECKED TRAIN.
Not Automobile from 30 years later.
By the way, Doug Roberson, I have looked up the draft projections and I cannot find a GA tek player on any NFL draft site mock draft.
GA tek has 25 NFL players today.
UGA 45.
UGA will have MORE DRAFTED again.
We had yet another UGA player drafted # 1 in the NFL Draft 1st overall pick, just last season.
GA tek NEVER HAS.
GA tek never has ANY HEISMAN TROPHY either, but you fail to report that.
As you FAIL TO REPORT Doug Roberson that GA tek is on ACADEMIC PROBATION in NCAA APR with 914 in men’s basketball.
How can that be Doug Roberson that you have NOT MENTIONED THAT 1 TIME ?
This is CURRENT NEWS Doug Roberson. Today. Now. PROBATION GA tek by NCAA.
Today.
NCAA Academic Progress Rate GA tek Men’s Basketball PROBATION with LOST SCHOLARSHIPS AS PENALTY for PROBATION of limited to ONLY 11 SCHOLARSHIPS.
Did they decide they are even going to show this game on TV ? I never saw the AJ-C report on THAT, either. I heard FOX was not going to be available in MANY MARKETS, in fact I heard that includes this AREA.
Not that you can open the 1-horse newspaper town trying to coddle GA tek fans (both of them) sports pages and find a hard hitting truthful story line on GA tek.
Where is your retraction Doug Roberson for what you REPORTED in THIS blog about what you guaranteed would happen before GA Tek LOST it’s 60th game to UGA in football, a feat only 4 other 1-A programs have accomplished.
Let me know when you are going to FACE THE MUSIC and quit sitting there squirming in your chair hiding behind your keyboard UNABLE to login and say under the handle you said GA tek would “DESTROY UGA” that GA tek LOST.
Doug Roberson, You know there is 1 more unfinished business item to address to your biased reporting for GA tek in the AJ-C, sir, and that is that GA tek’s fans are the WORST POOR SPORTS in all of sports. Imagine coming in here with the EXCUSES they came in here with after what they said pre-game about “DESTROYING UGA.”
There is a long TRADITION of POOR SPORTS at GA tek. Forever. From the beginning. No time off. Continuous. Everlasting.
60.
8 of 9 for Coach Richt.
30-24. (I didn’t know a 6-point LOSS is “DESTROYING UGA” Doug Roberson and both GA tek fans, and St. Simons.)

Craig James was not the running back in the Southwest Conference SMU Mustangs, as that was Eric Dickerson, as we all know.
Craig James was part of the team that gave SMU the death penalty, the only school actually ever, for paying monies to their players to play college football.
The evidence was so overwhelming, but of course the NCAA keeps all that private. One day, all this will become Public Record. It’s just a matter of time.
Why should it be private ?
Just yesterday UGA got it thrown out of Court, that Decory Bryant should be paid his rightful $500,0000 for NEGLIGENCE of the highest order by UGA football operations. The reason ? Public State Government employee.
We have Sunshine Laws in this Sovereign State of Georgia.
Open Public Records.
Trust me we shall all know who took cash monies to play football for death penalty SMU.
After this checkered past in at SMU, Craig James was NOT DRAFTED by the NFL.
NFL great ?
I know not.
I was there.
No one ever heard of the guy.
He played in ONE (1) Super Bowl. He gained 1 yard in total.
You’ll have to interview Craig James Colin Cowherd to find out if Craig James was the starter on that Super Bowl team he claims to have been on.
I certainly never heard of the guy.
Craig James WAS drafted by the Washington Federals of the USFL.
The records Herschel Walker SET AT THAT TIME Craig James was in the USFL, don’t count.
What Craig James did in comparison to Herschel Walker who NEVER has been discussed in the same sentence with any damn DEATH PENALTY or taking cash to play college football, in the USFL is Craig James couldn’t hold Herschel Walker’s jockstrap.
How a man who is handed the football 5 times in the Super Bowl and gains a NET 1 yard, for 7 inches per carry in the Super Bowl, gets the job of ESPN spokesman, is beyond me.
But, Craig James has been SUSPENDED for his involvement in this controversial one-sided ESPN viewpoint of a shed or not a shed, as only he asserts.
Not even Adam asserts that, himself.
Craig James following his SUSPENSION from broadcasting the Alamo Bowl with Mike Patrick.
Truth be told, all the ESPN college football broadcast team and ALL THEIR TACTICS, have been under Federal Scrutiny Multitudes of times, and will continue to be – especially this controversial Craig James.
For Example :
Craig James said in 1998 that the Big 10 Wisconsin Badgers were “the worst team to ever play in the Rose Bowl.”
Wisconsin went on to defeat #6 UCLA 38–31 in the 1999 Rose Bowl. Afterward, Badger coach Barry Alvarez fired back :
“Well, I know we’re at least the second worst.”
This is the kind of crap we get out ESPN daily in college football.
Their broadcasters tend to be from that part of the country and they are BIASED BEYOND BELIEF and LIE.
Knowingly LIE.
These are the kind of comments, daily, that all college football fans have to put up with.
Craig James is broadcasting the Rose Bowl ?
What does Craig James know about the Rose Bowl ?
There have been 95 Rose Bowls. Craig James didn’t get to even sniff one. (Rumors of his being able to sniff aforementioned Herschel Walker’s jockstrap, I cannot attest to.)
The facts on that quote of Craig James, for example of ESPN broadcasting B.S. about College Football and how ESPN tries to SHAPE how we all feel about certain teams and conferences and players and now coaches they want to get involved with, are that
EVERY BIG 10 team since that game have LOST the Rose Bowl, except for – of course Craig James the very next year when WISCONSIN ALSO WON THE ROSE BOWL.
No Big 10 team has won the Rose Bowl since.
1999 season is the last time the Big 10 Won the Rose Bowl.
Not this millennium for college football seasons, has the Big 10 won a Rose Bowl.
But, that team was the worst ever to play in a Rose Bowl Game.
Wouldn’t all those other Big 10 teams all This Millennium, all be WORSE Craig James ?
Or, are you sir, NEVER held accountable for your statements any more than St. Simons in here ?
Washington shut out an Iowa Team once in a Rose Bowl 28-0.
But, WINNER Wisconsin 38-31 over the PAC-ZERO team UCLA the 1998-football season, was WORSE than that Iowa team shut out 28-0.
Have to explain that one to me too, sorry Craig, son, you are losing credibility.
Michigan once shut out Southern California 48-0.
ESPN broadcaster Craig James AFTER that 48-0 shellacking, says Wisconsin in 1998 is WORSE – winning 38-31 over UCLA.
???
UGA shut out UCLA Craig James in the Rose Bowl. Wouldn’t that UCLA team be the worst ever ?
SMU
Excuse me SMU football player of the DEATH PENALTY at SMU Craig James, did you know the ONLY TIME SMU was in the Rose Bowl, SMU was SHUT OUT.
SMU is the WORST ROSE BOWL TEAM EVER.
You can quote me on that Craig James.
Michigan shut out a Stanford team 49-0, but Craig James can shape ESPN opinions with his QUIP Wisconsin 1998-football season is the worst ever team to be in a Rose Bowl.
SMU Bowl Record is 4-6-1 All-Time. One would think if you were looking for the WORST BOWL TEAM EVER, SMU would certainly be RIGHT UP THERE.
Especially being shut out in the damn Rose Bowl you are broadcasting Craig James.
As a Matter of Fact, that is the ONLY SMU team to EVER BE SHUT OUT IN A BOWL GAME when SMU was SHUT OUT in the Rose Bowl.
But, that team is NOT the worst ever to play in the Rose Bowl, the WINNER 38-31 over UCLA, Wisconsin is.
B.S. ESPN.
B.S. to your tactics.
Broadcast and quit trying to shape our opinions.
We don’t care what you THINK.
We don’t care Colin Cowherd what you WANT US TO THINK.
24-9.
Craig James, I was there Cotton Bowl, UGA beat SMU 24-9.
I get more than just a little fed up with all this ESPN shaping of my opinions.
All of us are.
SMU hasn’t even been to a Bowl Game for more than 25 years today.
1984.
Open Mouth, switch feet Craig James.
Craig James rushed for 494 yards and 2 touchdowns in the NFL per season.
Never heard of you Craig James, because you are a NOBODY and a LIAR with zero credibility.

I am concerned about our defense being able to get the Iowa offense off the field. I think we will lose this game in the trenches. I hope I am wrong, but our linemen are too small to handle the Iowa offensive line, and our offensive line is too weak to handle their defensive line.
Iowa will use the same tactics that UGA used against us. Ground game to keep the ball, and strong defensive line to stuff the middle.
I see another beat down coming, so far only Clemson has shown up for the ACC and if we are ever going to compete, the schools in the ACC need to begin signing some of those big linemen. I just hope it is not like last year’s bowl game.
As for who stays or who goes, we can’t control that. I’l love for all of them to come back and see if they can continue to improve on this year’s record. CPJ will recruit the players that fit even better in his offensive system. Just wish he could get some better defensive linemen to stop the run and put pressure on the QB.
Go Jackets!!! See you in Miami.

Sure, we can count the three (all of which you have since forfeited for using ineligible players) from 98-2000, but let’s go back before that when we won ANOTHER SEVEN in a row from 91-97. How’d that be? Or even better, we can just cite the whole entire series record. 60-37-5. Or even better some more numbers for you…

Some drunk UGA basterd was up all night writing a long blog for us to scroll past. Was that longer than any paper you have ever written? Looks like it. Good job bubba. What did you go to bed and the fat trailer trash you roll over and hump didn’t give you any?
Your team is irrelevant this year. Well take a look at the TV ratings for your sorry ass gamblers paradise bowl vs our BCS bowl. They may be higher though because you had 2 mediocre teams who think their teams are as good as the teams that whip them each year(Texas Fla).
Yes you have won 8 of 9, but only 1 has been a blowout which looke dlike Chan was either scared or paid to lay down.
I agree our defense sis sub-optimal, but wow how about your Opie Cunningham QB you had this year. Our red headed fair skined QB at least won games and could pass. YOurs looked like the bully from the Christmas Story. All talk and no production. When you finally got your running game going from your stable of 5 star running backs you beat us at our own game. Congrats. So were you up all night wiriting on a Tech blog because you are so upset you missed the new year with your bowl by 3 days? If we are so IRRELEVANT, then why did you post 300 lines of dribble about BS. And you bash DOug who is one of your own but just doing his job (which if yo ahve a job you won’t be doing very well today from the looks of things) Oh that’s right, its raining and landscapers and DOT workers are off as well as garbage men today.
So get your last jab in, you have 8 months to suffer before football starts again. And hows that Hoops team you got over there? LEts see your only ranked recruit (a 3 star) walked on to Tech with a Hope Scholarship and red shirted. Nice hoops program. We will crush you on the 5th the same day we play for a BCS win while you sit there and post the same dribble. I guess you just have a one track mind. Only football which is I guess an indicaiton of why you are posting on a Tech blog all night (woman tired of the same thing??)
I will give you credit for 1 talking point. I agree we should have kept Tenuta. But our Defense will work out in the long run. how’s that coordinator hunt? Hope you don’t pick up Tenuta and I wish we would get him back.

Uh oh. The Techies have really shown us. They have “almost” beat us several times and we very rarely blow them out. Congrats to the Georgia Tech football program for this tremendous accomplishment.
Boy, the Tech fans really know how to put us in our place.
There is something I’m a little confused about Techies that maybe you can help me out with. You see, I did not attend Georgia Tech or take advanced calculus. I am obviously not as smart, wealthy, or as good of a human being as you are so please forgive my ignorance. Anyway, one minute I see Tech fans boasting about 11 wins, a top 10 ranking, and being “relevant.” Then in the next breath you act as if beating this “relevant” team is no big accomplishment. “Whoopdeedoo, you beat us.” Well Techies, which is it? Georgia either beat an awesomely “relevant” team or they didn’t. You can’t have it both ways.
I think the problem is that deep down inside the Techies know that their 11 wins was the product of a weak schedule. They know that they didn’t do anything that a lot of other teams couldn’t have done under the same circumstances. Its quite telling that the best team Tech will face all year is the 2nd best team in the Big 10. What an absolute crock of a schedule. Trust me when I say that beating Tech this year was far from a great accomplishment for Georgia. Why else would we fire 3 coaches immediately afterward? A great gameplan in a win over Florida this year probably would have saved Willie’s job. A win over a hyped up overrated ACC creampuff? Not so much. We just love rubbing it in your acne ridden faces.
And I know I am dumb and worthless because I am not an engineer Techies, but please do not insult everyone’s intelligence by claiming that you do not care what people think about your overrated season. You are the most insecure bunch of sniveling little nancy boys of any fanbase in college football. Your mindless arrogance is matched only by your massive inferiority complex. You care very much what I and everyone else thinks.
Happy New Year. 11 months of it will be spent sucking on 30-24 until we have another winning score to shove in your big mouths.

The game is going to be great, I of course think the Hawks are gonna win but I think it’s one of the better match ups in the BCS. The teams are pretty evenly matched. I think Iowa gets the advantage because of the amount of time they got to prepare. I’m sure they watched the GT/UM game about 200 times.

Interesting posts. Some of you seem to miss the point that GT is relevant to those people whose opinion matter to us Tech fans. What is truly irrelevant is comments from the bulldawg nation in regards to GT. Hard as you dawg fans may try to hide it, it is obvious that the success of the GT program is a harsh pill to swallow. In fact, GT playing in the OB doesn’t seem to be as irrelevant as dawg fans claim it to be, as demonstrated by all the attempts instill some sort of discomfort to Tech fans enjoying their BCS Bowl Bound Team Yellow Jackets. Some may call this behavior an “obsession”. Posting disparaging remarks about GT is probably your best therapy, although it does not address the cause of your discomfort, i.e., GT is a rising power in college football, despite our number 80th recruiting classes (your words, not mine). I, for one, am amused and happy to see that the “middle of the pack” shoe is now on the other foot. Win or lose I will have a blast at the game watching the ACC Champion Yellow Jackets run all over Iowa in the sunny South Florida BCS Orange Bowl!

Iowa’s defensive line is not any bigger or tougher than Clemson’s, UNC’s, or VT’s… im not worried about their defense. If anything that would slow us down on offense, it would be due to the layoff and we would shoot ourselves in the foot with missed blocks, poor timing, and fumbles.

Can someone give me a clear reason Tech claims 4 national championships? I did a great deal of research on the subject and couldn’t find out why. Prior to the 1950’s there were so many polls and methodologies used it was hard to pinpoint a consensus number one. By the same logic Tech uses, Georgia won the championship in 1927, 1942 and 1946.
Even with the most recent championship in 1990 almost all of the polls picked Colorado as the number one team.
I’m serious. Why does Tech claim four national championships? Is there a definitive list I missed?

2. Don Bosco Prep (Ramsey, N.J.), 12-0. Last Week: 2. Season complete. Non-Public Group IV state champions.
3. Abilene (Texas), 16-0. Last Week: 2. Ronnell Sims rushed for 215 yards and three touchdowns to lead Abilene to a 5A-II state title over Katy, 28-17. Cousin Hershel Sims added a 60-yard TD run as the Eagles captured their first state title since 1956.
4. Butler (Matthews, N.C.), 15-0. Last Week: 3. Season complete. 4A state champions.
5. Servite (Anaheim, Calif.), 14-1. Last Week: 6. With a 33-30 win over Rocklin, Servite captured the CIF Division II title. Nicholas Echeverry kicked a 23-yard field goal as time expired to clinch the victory for the Friars.
6. Dwyer (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.), 14-1. Last Week: NR. Dwyer captured Florida’s 4A crown, dominating previously-unbeaten Niceville 42-14. Since a season-opening loss to Glades Central, the Panthers have blown out each opponent they have faced.
7. Memphis University (Memphis, Tenn.), 13-0. Last Week: 4. Season complete. Division II-AA state champions.
8. Davidson (Hilliard, Ohio), 13-1. Last Week: 5. Season complete. Division I state champions.

Bulldawg, are you seriously stupid enough to be BRAGGING about having a higher APR? Try to follow…..
GT CONSISTENTLY has one of the highest (this past year, THE highest) average SAT scores for incoming freshman football players IN THE COUNTRY.
UGA signs “student-athletes” every year that are bonafide IDIOTS.
Yet, SOMEHOW, UGA continues to keep these IDIOTS eligible and on track to GRADUATE.
Leonard Pope (illiterate). Jarius Wynn (Wonderlich of 12). Knowshon Moreno (WL of 13). Now there’s Washaun Ealey, who makes MOST of them look like STEPHEN F’N HAWKING.
For Ealey to stay eligible more than one season, it would take academic shenanigans that would make the pre-Jan Kemp days look like a THINK TANK. Yet, who here bets he WILL somehow stay eligible?
Bulldawg, it is YOU who should be embarrassed to have a program that continues to operate under a PLANTATION SYSTEM. Every summer, it’s PINS AND NEEDLES waiting to see which of the new BOATLOAD of ILLITERATES will fail to meet NCAA MINIMUMS. Ever wonder why there’s never any SUSPENSE like that on NORTH AVENUE?
Could you imagine the attrition from EVERY UGA SIGNING CLASS if those “student-athletes” had to actually tackle genuine academics like at TECH?? GRADUATE? JESUS, HALF OF EACH CLASS WOULDN’T SURVIVE ONE YEAR!
And yet they SOMEHOW stay eligible and bump the APR in ATHENS? Yeah, Bulldawg, you should be WALKING TALL!
Keeping IDIOTS ELIGIBLE….that’s ANOTHER…..BULLDOG POINT of PRIDE!!

Thanks for the list. I had not seen that one. However, I guess I was looking for something a little more scientific than a poll that relies so heavily on “what the schools claim” as justification for being put on the list. For instance, Tech claims to be the national champions in 1952 so they are on the list you linked for that year, but both the AP and the Coaches’ Poll for that year had Michigan State as the champs.
I’m not trying to be difficult. I went to Emory so I don’t have great loyalty to either Tech or UGA. I’m just wondering what criteria Tech uses to make that claim other than the fact they claimed to be the champs for those years.
Hope you have a great 2010 as well.

“The future of the program hinges on doing two things consistently: 1) Beating UGA and 2) winning the ACC championship. ”
This is incorrect. First things first. First, recruiting has to get much better on the defensive side of the ball. Johnson says he knows what he needs in recruiting for the offense, and I will give him the benefit of the doubt. No one slowed Tech down this year but Miami, in the 3rd game in two weeks deal. But defense is another story.
You will not consistently do anything unless the defense improves a whole lot. Tech got lucky this year outscoring people. This will not happen every year. If the QB goes down it is an entirely different team. You can hang your hat on great defense, not great offense.
Recruiting for defense must improve – this year is a good start. But it must improve even more. The only way to consistently beat Georgia is to out recruit them. And so far, this is not happening.
Back in the Dodd era when both schools were white & both teams white, Tech pretty much owned UGA because they out recruited them. But since regained our senses, integrated, & introduced the black player, UGA has pretty much owned Tech. And the difference is recruiting. Scout has this years’ classes rated nationally as follows – Georgia at #6 and Tech at #41. This will not consistently beat many SEC teams, especially UGA. The miracle is that Tech has been able to keep the scores fairly close. But if you can reach the level of UGA in recruiting, then you will consistently be in the hunt for the ACC crown.
Like it or not, believe it or not, this is just the way it is.

gordon, this is the criteria CFDW uses for the NC’s they recognize (not based on what each school “claims”). They seem to use pretty good criteria for which “selectors” they recognized for various time periods.

gordon7, check out the following link for a list of all college football champions since the beginning of time (LOL).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NCAA_Division_I_FBS_National_Football_Championship
You will see that Tech is listed 6 times, and UGAG 5 times. If you dig a little bit deeper, you can find the official NCAA site where Tech is listed 3 times (for whatever reason, they do not recognize 1952, even though Tech was 12-0 and in a bowl, whereas MSU was 9-0 and in no bowl). On that site, UGAG is only listed once (1980).

collegefootballfan – yes and no. You’re right, the difference when dodd was dominating was recruiting. It was also coaching. During the 50s drought Butts was pretty much drunk the whole team. Once Dooley came in ‘64, Dodd’s reign was over. He lost three in a row (incidentally the only three times he faced Dooley) and retired in shame.
As far as recruiting, in the 40s and 50s, the two most dominant football programs in the state were Tech High and Boys High, both in Atlanta. These were the days where all the Atlanta kids would go to tech. Georgia had to go out of state to recruit (by default), hence the high number of northerners who starred at georgia, i.e. Trippi, Sinkwihc, Morocco, et al.
You can blame it on whatever you want though. Truth is, tech hasn’t been much of a factor since Dooley ran Dodd out of town, and integration finally occurred.
Supersize that order, mutt
December 31st, 2009
1:47 pm
collegeballfan, you are correct in saying that Tech’s recruiting has not been up to UGAG’s over most of the past 40 years, but I think that is as much due to coaches as anything. UGAG had Dooley at the start of that time, and he succeeded first on the field, and then on the recruiting trail. That has continued. Meanwhile, Tech went through a string of losers, or at the best very mediocre coaches, until Bobby Ross arrived. Unfortunately, he was followed by the biggest loser of all, Bill Lewis. O’Leary brought Tech back to a decent competitive level, but then he was followed by a good man, but a terrible coach, in Chan Gailey. If CPJ can recruit the kind of talent he needs, which does not have to be the 5-star athletes that UGAG has wasted most years recently, then the wins will continue, and the recruiting will improve, hopefully on defense. And regarding that 5-star criterion, a 5-star recruit in CPJ’s offense might not be worth a damn, but a 2 or 3-star recruit might turn into a true 5-star athlete, simply because he is the best at what he does in an offense the nature of which can’t be graded in comparison to other college offenses. In other words, what’s good for other schools might not be good for Tech, and what’s good for Tech might not be any good in traditional offenses. But that certainly doesn’t mean they are inferior athletes by a long shot. But we DO HAVE TO recruit and sign better defensive players.

dawgy, I think it shows Harvard’s last title in 1919, too. Princeton has even more.
Again, it’s partially a product of the various eras. Also, it was readily apparent until the late 50’s or so that most Southern programs (except maybe Bama?) had a terrible time overcoming the long-standing “Northern bias” in polls and reporting. Most of the “national” sportswriting and publications were still coming out of the NE and MW (think of Grantland Rice, etc…).
Many Southern teams got screwed on a regular basis in favor of what were many times (probably) inferior Northern/Midwestern teams…..and the polls also were finalized before any bowl games.

What has always somewhat surprised me about the results of integrating is that Tech was the first (or at least one of the first) teams in the south to integrate. You would think that that would have meant something, but it apparently did not. Also Tech bucked sourthern tradition AND the governor of Georgia in order to play an integrated team in a bowl game under Dodd. That was NATIONAL NEWS too.

dawgy, I’m not making excuses for Tech’s not having played in one of the so-called major bowls since 1967 (Jan 1, 1967, that is). It, however, is not Tech’s fault for not playing in the 1990 Orange Bowl. Tech wanted to play Colorado, but the “powers that be” wanted f**g Notre Dame instead. But even though the Citrus Bowl was not considered a major bowl, it still produced one-half of the shared national championship for that year. And don’t try to belittle a shared championship. That was one of MANY MANY shared championships through the years; just ask Alabama, USC, LSU, and others if shared championships are significant or not. You and I both know what each of those schools will say.

Supersize, it was actually the ACC’s stupid lock-in with the Citrus that prevented the GT-CU Orange Bowl from happening.
The deal stipulated that the ACC champion could get out of the Orlanso game if they were ranked #1 or #2 the week PRIOR to the end of the regular season (can’t recall if it was an either/or or both polls). Tech was one week too late moving to #2, and thus was forced to the Citrus.

dawgy, not picking on you here, but the “shared titles” I was talking about are the ones when either 2 or 3 different teams had a legitimate claim to the title, like Tech in 1990 and 1952. Tech, like Georgia, has some others that were shared, but only because some obscure polling service named them their champion. That’s why Tech only claims 4 championships, and why, as far as I have been able to determine, Georgia can only claim 1.

Tom, did you notice that two Big Ten teams who played fewer games than Georgia are recognized in 1942? That’s the same reason Tech had to share 1952, because the northern sportswriters refused to acknowledge (or play) superior southern teams. And that I guess is why neither Georgia in 1942 nor Tech in 1952 is listed as a “recognized” champion by the NCAA.

Real Tiger Hawk, I can assure you that if the game is close at halftime, Iowa WILL LOSE. Tech’s offense has turned on the afterburners in the second half of almost every game this year. I think Tech’s speed and quickness and CPJ’s uncanny knack at game-day coaching will run all around and past Iowa’s big SLOW defenders in the second half. Iowa’s only real chance is to put points on the board in the first half so Tech has to come from way behind. I HOPE that won’t happen, and I don’t think that it will.

Any time Georgia Tech beats Georgia it is by definition a fluke. You’ve only beaten us at about a 25% clip in the past 40 years, and most of those wins came in the 70’s and 80’s.
Hawkeye fans, CPJ is not nearly the unstoppable genius that his admirers would have you believe. There are flaws to his offensive system. His lineman are undersized and easily overpowered. Tech struggles with big athletic D-lineman. His offense is prone to turnovers. And he has absolutely no freaking clue what to do in a hurry up 2 minute situation. (See end of Georgia game.). And even Paul Johnson himself would probably tell you that 3rd and long is not his strong suit. His offense is also not well suited to overcome big deficits. Last, but certainly not least, the dude doesn’t know a damn thing about defense. He’s never had a top flight defense anywhere he’s been.
Yes, Paul Johnson The Great has his flaws. You won’t read about them in the AJC however. They are clearly concerned about alienating sensitve Tech fans excited about their first big season in ages. Apparently asking tough questions and practicing good journalism doesn’t sell ad space anymore. And you certainly won’t here about any of Johnson’s flaws out of Tech fans. They aren’t the most objective bunch in the world. Be weary of their arguments. They are either telling you half the story or flat out lying and making crap up. Tech fans will stoop as low as they need to so that they can feel good about themselves.
Johnson is a good but far from great coach. Don’t buy the hype.

As far as CPJ’s calls at the end ot the UGAG game, I questioned them too. But if you look at the plays, Nesbitt overthrew a wide-open Thomas on one of them, and unfortunately Thomas dropped the last one. And the pass to Stephen Hill was very close. The play calling might not have been what Tech fans expected, but it wasn’t UGAG’s defense that stopped them from working, and in hindsight, it wasn’t really that bad of a hurry-up offense, except it didn’t pay off. If it had, however, you mutts wouldn’t be posting on a Tech blog. But it’s ok. Since most of you are probably uneducated and unemployed, I guess you have nothing better to do.

Of course Supersize. UGA never stops Tech from doing anything. We either cheat or the refs stop you. The Georgia defense clearly had absolutely nothing to do with why Tech could not get in the endzone at the end of the game. It must have been space aliens in those Georgia uniforms.
I now interrupt whatever freaking la la land that Supersize is in to bring you the story behind Tech’s final drive. Johnson tried to run the ball on that drive. It wasn’t very successful. Again Supersize, I will concede for the sake of argument that space aliens prevented Tech from running the ball on that drive and not the Georgia defense if it makes you feel better. But the fact remains that Tech couldn’t even pick up a 3rd and short on that drive and almost coughed up the ball when Georgia’s tackles (or space aliens posing as Georgia tackles) completely blew up the play. At that point, I think Johnson panicked. There was too much field in front of him and not enough time on the clock. 5 and 6 yard gains weren’t going to cut it. So he panicked and started hurling the ball down field hoping for a blown Georgia coverage or pass interference. Didn’t happen. I will give you that Nesbitt overthrew someone on one of those plays. That’s what you get for having a crappy QB. That’s your problem, not ours. But on the other pass plays the Georgia secondary (or space aliens posing as the Georgia secondary for Supersize) stepped up and made plays. I was pleasantly surprised to be quite honest. I thought they’d find a way to screw it up, but they didn’t. And when butterfingers dropped the 4th down pass, which again is your problem Techies and not ours, it sealed the deal. We were in prevent anyway and basically were giving you the 1st down, but you still couldn’t get it. Sad.
Thank God for space aliens!! We all know the Georgia defense could never pull of such a feat.
Good grief.

Sorry, dawgfan, but the mutt defense had absolutely nothing to do with stopping Nesbitt’s passing on that last drive. He was simply off-target, just as he was for most of the ACC Championship game. If Nesbitt is such a terrible QB, then why was he so high on the mutt’s list of desired recruits when he signed at Tech. The mutt defense did stop Tech’s interior running game, but they never stopped the outside game, although to your credit it didn’t hurt you as much as it did last year in Athens.
I’m not making excuses or whining. UGAG beat Tech fair and square, but (as even you admit) Tech DID have a chance at the end and blew it. As much as I hate to admit it, the better team on the field that night won the game, just like the better team on the field won in Athens last year (it was NOT a fluke). Tech’s problem this year and last year was the defense; they sucked. But at least last year yours sucked more; this year Tech’s did.
It’s only natural for a supporter of any team to look for “what if’s,” but since the beginning of the history of college football, you mutts have been making excuses, whining, calling foul, and saying players were ineligible—anything to deny the truth that you got beat. It apparently matters not that Tech’s teams and wins during the war years were recognized by the NCAA AND EVERY OTHER TEAM Tech played during those years. But thanks to Dan McGill, you don’t even count those games. And that mindset is not only directed at Tech, whenever you lose any game, you try to find reasons why it didn’t really happen and point fingers either to refs or to the other teams.
Tech lost the game; it’s over. As bitter a pill as it is to swallow, I’ve dealt with it. But Tech also won a conference championship (making a total of 16 for Tech to only 13 for UGAG, including the 60+ years Tech and UGAG were in the same conference), and we are going to Miami for the Orange Bowl. I don’t care if it’s the first so-called major bowl Tech has been to in 43 years; we’re going, and I am going, and that’s all that matters.
Watching the Texas Bowl game earlier, I loved all the references the announcers made to Paul Johnson, both for his years at Navy and now for his work at Tech. When was the last time any announcer made any complimentary remarks about Mark Richt during a game he wasn’t coaching? The fact of the matter is that, at least for now, UGAG is totally irrelevant on the national scene (hell, you are even irrelevant within the SEC–even the SEC east). If Tech beats Iowa Tuesday night, I think it’s obvious that Tech will have re-emerged on the national scene, at least for awhile—the tides and fortunes of college football teams DO change periodically.
