Miami, Ft. Lauderdale or Plantation?!? Who cares. It’s Florida and it’s warm
8:53 pm December 30, 2009, by Doug Roberson
Woohoo! It’s 75 degrees outside, about 35 higher than in Douglasville at 1:30 Wednesday when I left.
Even better than the warmth……Cuban food. I loves me some Cuban food.
But, I digress.
There are lots and lots of interesting storylines to watch for in the upcoming Orange Bowl.
Here’s a few I’m most interested in, and would be interested to hear your t houghts on the subject, as well:
- Iowa’s large, tough defensive line, against Tech’s smaller, quicker, and tough, offensive line.
- How will Tech’s offense fare after a month off? Running offenses are generally characterized as physical and tough. Tech’s is both, but it also relies on timing. Will the timing be there after so many days off?
- Any hangover from the last trip to Miami earlier this season? I doubt it. I don’t really see a connection between a site and a result, but as I’ve often said, what do I know?
- How has Tech’s defense improved in its past 10+ practices?
- For a team that hasn’t appeared in one of the “Big Four” bowls in 40-plus years, what could this mean to the future of the Jackets’ program?
- How many Tech fans will be here? In my unofficial count, there were three Iowa fans on the plane down. No Tech fans. By fans, I mean someone who is wearing identifiable team gear. And, keep in mind, that is a highly scientific standard that can withstand all but the most intense scrutiny.
- And, I doubt there will be an answer to this question, but could this be the last game for more than one Tech junior?

If you are wondering about the title of the thread, the Orange Bowl has a Miami dateline, but its actually on the outskirts of Ft. Lauderdale. And I am staying in Plantation.

Supersize, it was actually the ACC’s stupid lock-in with the Citrus that prevented the GT-CU Orange Bowl from happening.
The deal stipulated that the ACC champion could get out of the Orlanso game if they were ranked #1 or #2 the week PRIOR to the end of the regular season (can’t recall if it was an either/or or both polls). Tech was one week too late moving to #2, and thus was forced to the Citrus.

dawgy, not picking on you here, but the “shared titles” I was talking about are the ones when either 2 or 3 different teams had a legitimate claim to the title, like Tech in 1990 and 1952. Tech, like Georgia, has some others that were shared, but only because some obscure polling service named them their champion. That’s why Tech only claims 4 championships, and why, as far as I have been able to determine, Georgia can only claim 1.

Tom, did you notice that two Big Ten teams who played fewer games than Georgia are recognized in 1942? That’s the same reason Tech had to share 1952, because the northern sportswriters refused to acknowledge (or play) superior southern teams. And that I guess is why neither Georgia in 1942 nor Tech in 1952 is listed as a “recognized” champion by the NCAA.

This has been fun but in all seriousness: To all the Techsters traveling to the Orange Bowl: have a safe flight/drive and enjoy the game.
To the very few Techies (St Simons/Yellow Fuzz, etc) who stayed on the UGA blog all last year with ((45-42)) I say ((30-24)) until we meet again in Athens.
To everyone watching the Jackets on TV, please do not adjust your sets as this game is meant to have a green field not the blue you are used to.

You Rednecks sure do post funny(angry). You can fight with your one toothed cousin all day and night, but, There is game to be played between the Hawks and the Jackets and I do not think you understand just how much pain is about to be unleashed on your poor Jackets. Iowa’s Defense is quite simply,…..destructive! Iowa has stars at almost every position on defense and will be healthy on ofense. This game will be close at halftime and then things change, the hits will start hurting more and the will to compete is taken away. Iowa wins 31 – 07. But do stop by our tailgate party for a cold one.

by the way, to expound on what was said earlier. Why are we quibbling over who claimed more titles when players wore leather helmets. Again, Harvard claims ten titles. BACK WHEN THEY WORE LEATHER HELMETS. why is this being argued again? I hardly think those titles mean that Harvard has a better program and tradition than tech, but going by your logic, they could smoke tech’s ass in football.

I wish I could get to Miami because its sub-zero here in Nebraska. I can’t wait for this game.
I look at this as a statement game. Winning the ACC was a great goal to accomplish, and it has already been a successful season, but winning a bowl game on a big stage like the Orange Bowl can really give us the confidence and recognition this team needs. I feel like the break has given the defense a time to rest and collect themselves and expect them to play like they did in the VT or UNC game. GO TECH LETS GET IT DONE

Real Tiger Hawk, I can assure you that if the game is close at halftime, Iowa WILL LOSE. Tech’s offense has turned on the afterburners in the second half of almost every game this year. I think Tech’s speed and quickness and CPJ’s uncanny knack at game-day coaching will run all around and past Iowa’s big SLOW defenders in the second half. Iowa’s only real chance is to put points on the board in the first half so Tech has to come from way behind. I HOPE that won’t happen, and I don’t think that it will.

Real Tiger Hawk (and I AM on my way to the bank), I know Iowa is good, but Big Ten teams are notoriously slow, and I am sure Iowa has not faced a team with Tech’s speed and quickness, nor a quarterback like Nesbitt either who has fooled many a good defensive player on the option Tech won’t “overpower” anybody, but with Johnson as coach, I can assure you Tech CAN and WILL outsmart you and outrun you. I’ll look for your response to that when I get back in about 30 minutes

Any time Georgia Tech beats Georgia it is by definition a fluke. You’ve only beaten us at about a 25% clip in the past 40 years, and most of those wins came in the 70’s and 80’s.
Hawkeye fans, CPJ is not nearly the unstoppable genius that his admirers would have you believe. There are flaws to his offensive system. His lineman are undersized and easily overpowered. Tech struggles with big athletic D-lineman. His offense is prone to turnovers. And he has absolutely no freaking clue what to do in a hurry up 2 minute situation. (See end of Georgia game.). And even Paul Johnson himself would probably tell you that 3rd and long is not his strong suit. His offense is also not well suited to overcome big deficits. Last, but certainly not least, the dude doesn’t know a damn thing about defense. He’s never had a top flight defense anywhere he’s been.
Yes, Paul Johnson The Great has his flaws. You won’t read about them in the AJC however. They are clearly concerned about alienating sensitve Tech fans excited about their first big season in ages. Apparently asking tough questions and practicing good journalism doesn’t sell ad space anymore. And you certainly won’t here about any of Johnson’s flaws out of Tech fans. They aren’t the most objective bunch in the world. Be weary of their arguments. They are either telling you half the story or flat out lying and making crap up. Tech fans will stoop as low as they need to so that they can feel good about themselves.
Johnson is a good but far from great coach. Don’t buy the hype.

As far as CPJ’s calls at the end ot the UGAG game, I questioned them too. But if you look at the plays, Nesbitt overthrew a wide-open Thomas on one of them, and unfortunately Thomas dropped the last one. And the pass to Stephen Hill was very close. The play calling might not have been what Tech fans expected, but it wasn’t UGAG’s defense that stopped them from working, and in hindsight, it wasn’t really that bad of a hurry-up offense, except it didn’t pay off. If it had, however, you mutts wouldn’t be posting on a Tech blog. But it’s ok. Since most of you are probably uneducated and unemployed, I guess you have nothing better to do.

Of course Supersize. UGA never stops Tech from doing anything. We either cheat or the refs stop you. The Georgia defense clearly had absolutely nothing to do with why Tech could not get in the endzone at the end of the game. It must have been space aliens in those Georgia uniforms.
I now interrupt whatever freaking la la land that Supersize is in to bring you the story behind Tech’s final drive. Johnson tried to run the ball on that drive. It wasn’t very successful. Again Supersize, I will concede for the sake of argument that space aliens prevented Tech from running the ball on that drive and not the Georgia defense if it makes you feel better. But the fact remains that Tech couldn’t even pick up a 3rd and short on that drive and almost coughed up the ball when Georgia’s tackles (or space aliens posing as Georgia tackles) completely blew up the play. At that point, I think Johnson panicked. There was too much field in front of him and not enough time on the clock. 5 and 6 yard gains weren’t going to cut it. So he panicked and started hurling the ball down field hoping for a blown Georgia coverage or pass interference. Didn’t happen. I will give you that Nesbitt overthrew someone on one of those plays. That’s what you get for having a crappy QB. That’s your problem, not ours. But on the other pass plays the Georgia secondary (or space aliens posing as the Georgia secondary for Supersize) stepped up and made plays. I was pleasantly surprised to be quite honest. I thought they’d find a way to screw it up, but they didn’t. And when butterfingers dropped the 4th down pass, which again is your problem Techies and not ours, it sealed the deal. We were in prevent anyway and basically were giving you the 1st down, but you still couldn’t get it. Sad.
Thank God for space aliens!! We all know the Georgia defense could never pull of such a feat.
Good grief.

Sorry, dawgfan, but the mutt defense had absolutely nothing to do with stopping Nesbitt’s passing on that last drive. He was simply off-target, just as he was for most of the ACC Championship game. If Nesbitt is such a terrible QB, then why was he so high on the mutt’s list of desired recruits when he signed at Tech. The mutt defense did stop Tech’s interior running game, but they never stopped the outside game, although to your credit it didn’t hurt you as much as it did last year in Athens.
I’m not making excuses or whining. UGAG beat Tech fair and square, but (as even you admit) Tech DID have a chance at the end and blew it. As much as I hate to admit it, the better team on the field that night won the game, just like the better team on the field won in Athens last year (it was NOT a fluke). Tech’s problem this year and last year was the defense; they sucked. But at least last year yours sucked more; this year Tech’s did.
It’s only natural for a supporter of any team to look for “what if’s,” but since the beginning of the history of college football, you mutts have been making excuses, whining, calling foul, and saying players were ineligible—anything to deny the truth that you got beat. It apparently matters not that Tech’s teams and wins during the war years were recognized by the NCAA AND EVERY OTHER TEAM Tech played during those years. But thanks to Dan McGill, you don’t even count those games. And that mindset is not only directed at Tech, whenever you lose any game, you try to find reasons why it didn’t really happen and point fingers either to refs or to the other teams.
Tech lost the game; it’s over. As bitter a pill as it is to swallow, I’ve dealt with it. But Tech also won a conference championship (making a total of 16 for Tech to only 13 for UGAG, including the 60+ years Tech and UGAG were in the same conference), and we are going to Miami for the Orange Bowl. I don’t care if it’s the first so-called major bowl Tech has been to in 43 years; we’re going, and I am going, and that’s all that matters.
Watching the Texas Bowl game earlier, I loved all the references the announcers made to Paul Johnson, both for his years at Navy and now for his work at Tech. When was the last time any announcer made any complimentary remarks about Mark Richt during a game he wasn’t coaching? The fact of the matter is that, at least for now, UGAG is totally irrelevant on the national scene (hell, you are even irrelevant within the SEC–even the SEC east). If Tech beats Iowa Tuesday night, I think it’s obvious that Tech will have re-emerged on the national scene, at least for awhile—the tides and fortunes of college football teams DO change periodically.
