Johnson transcript from Monday

A few quotes from Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson’s press conference on Monday, courtesy of the sports information department:

“Good morning. We’re looking forward to getting back to practice this afternoon. We took last week off after the [ACC] Championship game to take finals. We’ll start day one of bowl preparation today. We have a quality opponent in the University of Iowa. They’re a tremendous defensive football team. I’ve known [Iowa defensive coordinator] Norm Parker for a while and he has a great reputation. They have some outstanding players and they play well together as a team.

“Offensively, they have some big guys that lean on you and mash you a little bit. Then, they’ll throw some play-action at you. Their quarterback [Ricky] Stanzi will be back for this game, which will be a big help to them. They have a good football team. They don’t beat themselves and they’re very well coached. I think they’ve showed a lot of character in that they’ve come from behind in several games this year and did what they had to do to win. It will be a big challenge for us to get ready for Iowa.”

On if bowl preparation will be changed at all from last year to this year:

“Not really. There’s only one way to prepare and that’s to go out and practice. There’s not a whole lot of different ways to do it. I think that one of the goals of the team was to win a bowl game. I don’t think any of these players here have won a bowl game, so this is a pretty big deal to them. They’ll prepare to go play. This team has been pretty resilient and focused in. We’ve played 13 games and we’ve only had a game or two where we didn’t show our best effort. Overall, they’ve kind of showed up most of the time. I would be surprised if they didn’t work hard and don’t show up to play. Last year [in the Chick- fil-A Bowl], it was one of those games where we got beat. We got beat in the first 15 minutes. We self-destructed on special teams and we didn’t give ourselves a chance to come back because we dug such a hole. Hopefully, we’ll learn from that.”

On if a bowl game is a reward or a validation of a season:

“I think it’s somewhere in between. It’s a reward for having a great season and yet it’s important in the aspect that it could set the tone for the next season because it’s the last game you play. Certainly every time you play you want to win, but I don’t think you can make too much out of it one way or another.”

On if the approach of the team will be different because the Orange Bowl is a BCS bowl game:

“Well, it probably factors in at what is at stake, but it doesn’t change the way you get ready to play or approach the game. We’re going to approach the game the same way we have all season. We have more exposure. More people are probably going to watch it than a regular season game because you’re the only one on. It’s national TV and a BCS game, so you have a chance to make a statement one way or another. My concern is that if we play the way we’ve played all year, than we’ll see if we’re good enough. What you don’t want to do is regress and play your worst game of the year in your last game.”

On if the situation of these juniors [ who are considering  leaving early] effects recruiting at all:

“We’re still recruiting guys. We’re straight forward and honest with all of them. They know exactly where we are. So, we have to have some flexibility in that. We might have to have some guys, depending on the numbers, come in January. But, as long as they know that up front and you’re honest with them, then they know it. The juniors have to declare by Jan. 15th, so we’ll have a better idea about who’s staying before the signing day, so we’ll know.”

On Iowa’s ability on defense to create turnovers:

“I think they do a great job in zone coverage and they break to the ball well and they can get pressure with their front four. When you can do that, you can drop seven back into coverage and have some interceptions. Plus, nobody can run the ball on them. They generally play with six guys in the box and can stop the run, so they have some guys dropping. They’re well coached and they have some good players. They’re pretty good.”

Iowa will be in good shape with Stanzi returning at quarterback. They were undefeated with him at the controls. They have played in a bunch of close games and know how to win those type of games, as does Tech. Last year’s bowl game was a disaster as soon as the opening kickoff went out of bounds. I expect a great effort this year and a Yellow Jacket victory.

The latest article on Georgia Tech Football as they get ready for their BCS Orange Bowl appearance is now available for viewing on http://isportsweb.com. Go Jackets!

We can only hope that Iowa continues to drop 5 back and leave 6 to cover the option. This will be ACC v. Big Ten and how the other bowls play out will determine the winner’s final position in the polls. I am sorry to say, as a Tech fan, that the last week of the regular season certainly put the SEC on top. Best possible scenario would be for the Jackets to win handily; Florida to slaughter Cincy and either TCU or Boise to win big. Then Tech would move up over the Rose Bowl loser and maybe Cincy and the Fiesta loser. They will not jump Ala., Tex., Fla., the Rose winner or the Fiesta winner no matter what happens. The BEST they can hope is to move up three places to 6th.

I think Tech will play much better in the Orange Bowl this year than in the Chik-fil-a Bowl last year. The bowl last year was beating Muttland and the game ended up being a Perfect Storm game for LSU, who wanted and needed it more. This year, I expect the lessons learned from last year to take hold. As for the Conference vs. Conference stuff, that stuff is all fleeting, like an enema. Teams are in Conferences, Conferences are not in teams. If this years editions of Tech and Georgia were to play 10 times, Tech wins 7 of them. Muttland won this year because they wanted and needed it more.

I hope they have a great time in Bossier City.

Iowa has a good defense, which kept them in games early in the season while their offense decided to sleep until 5 minutes to go in the 4th quarter. They’re still Big 11 boys, which means they aren’t the fastest…which could pose a problem and an opportunity on 5 January. With a month to prepare, they could be just slow enough to recognize where we’re taking the ball on a given play…yet slow enough not to be able to catch up once we turn the corner. I think we need to get a lead as early as we can and stay on top of them in case they do start to catch on a little. Goferit will have it figured out…

For the Dawg fans here, I just wanted to remind you that UGA VII, your stinkin mascot, is dead, worm food now, just like all his predecessors. BTW, did you know that, in time, your mascot will become ‘unviable’? Read on this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purebred_(dog)

“Most purebred breeds that exist today were created in the late 1800s from older dog types by selective breeding and rigorous culling. This created a genetic bottleneck that will at some point render breeding from closed stud books unviable.”

“Well, yes I do believe that those mean old nasty UGA fans need to be punched in the nose. They are making fun of us and it…it…makes me….(sniffle, sniffle, sniffle)…want to….(sniffle, sniffle)….WAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!! I want my mommy!!!!!! I want my pacifier!!!!!”

“Yes I believe that Jonathan Dwyer did wet his pants a couple of times during our game with UGA in which he was completely shut down for 32 yards. Maybe it was just watching Caleb King run for all of those yards that made him so sad, since everyone was starting to believe that he was actually the better RB that came out of HS that year and not King. But now the whole world knows the truth.”

“Yes we did have to use brillo pads and comet to get the cleat marks off of Derrick Morgan where he got trucked so many times by UGA offensive linemen.”

“Well actually it did ruin our whole season to lose to UGA. That game means more to us than anything else. We will try to say that it don’t now and that the ACC championship means more, but the truth is, our season is ruined. There is no credibility at all or anything great about beating a no good Clemson team that got trashed by another SEC team. We will probably wet the bed against a mediocre Iowa team in the BCS bowl and then lose ALL credibility. Be what can we do? We are in the weakest, most pathetic conference in the nation? It’s not our fault.”

“Yes, I am proud that I coach at Georgia Tech. I love to stand on the balcony of my office at night and listen to the quaint, heartwarming sound of a 9 mm pistol echoing across the prestine, rolling hills of the Perry Homes housing project. It just….(sniffle, sniffle)…warms my soul.”

I looked at him and said we just beat an overreated Tech Team that even on our worst year we still should beat. This year was the worst year in the last 10 year and we still beat Tech. I was thinking back to the Citrus Bowl and it’s been that long since we’ve been in a Bowl that is significant and will get us NATIONA EXPOSURE , as a TECH fan with a realistic approach to our situation. I see this game being so defining for our Team & our Coaching staff and if we succeed we will benefit in so many positive ways. Very possible to finish in the top 10, first BCS bowl win, winner of our conference outright and probably several top recruits are won over by this national exposure (unlike the Weed-eater Bowl in Shreveport) and ugly fans KNOW IT sucks to be there. I would say with a win in the Orange Bowl we turn a big cornerstone our way and with only six seniors on our roster the FUTURE looks very goooooooooooooood

Don’t know about any of you but that statement should be a little discerning for Tech fans. Winning your bowl games sets the tone for recruiting, spring drills, summer practice and game preparations. Knowing you finished off your season with a win is very important to a team.

Your 200 year old offense is cute, but when it comes down getting down and dirty, those hawkeyes are nasty. Simple plan- let the farm boy O-Line beat up that soft and lightweight D and keep the Tech offense off the field and out of rythm. Make em play from behind = game over.
