It’s a slow time of the year. Tech is in finals so there’s no practices this week. They will resume next week, so I’ll be back with the blog then.
In the meantime, I thought I’d open the floor to you. I’d like to know who you think the team’s offensive MVP, defensive MVP, biggest surprise were this season.
Surprise can be player, play, game, moment….anything.

Right or wrong, the SEC is perceived as being world beaters. They are the only conference that can have a 2 loss team contend for the national championship. While teams in the Big 10, ACC and Pac 10 have to not only be undefeated, but win every game in impressive fashion. It wouldn’t make much sense for AD’s of SEC teams to schedule difficult out of conference games while the voters perceive the SEC as being so dominate. So for UT and UGA to schedule difficult games out of the SEC should be admired, since technically they really don’t have to.

That 5 loss team beat the best Tech team they’ve had since 1990, without their best player, yes??
Those “middle of the road” SEC teams put a whoopin’ on the ACC’s two best teams this year, yes?
Ahh yes, the ACC did send 10 teams to bowl games last year. Care to enlighten me on the record for their bowl games?
I didn’t think so. Thanks for playing though

college football fan,
Thank you for showing up in this blog, not as a troll like most, but to actually expel a breathe of rationality to this barren wasteland of long lost IQ points. I also applaud Georgia, Tennessee, and Alabama for trying to play some big games (Alabama has scheduled Tech for a home and away in a couple of years).

Lake Lanier,
I’m sorry, I didn’t realize that winning the COACHES POLL (you know, the one that counts for the BCS) in 1990 was “claiming” a title that Colorado “earned” (you know, with a 5th down against Missouri). “Soulless sewer rats”? Wow. You people have issues.
You realize that this is a Tech blog, right? Maybe you should go to the UGA blog and discuss how beautiful Shreveport is this time of year. Or maybe get off your mom’s computer and head for your job bagging groceries.

The AP W-I-T-H-D-R-E-W themselves from the BCS, just so you know. Yeah, the COACHES POLL never has controversy for being biased, at all, EVER!!! There’s never jokes made about the pathetic end of the year votes cast by coaches that have nothing better to do than sit around and watch every team in the nation play, right? You’re not very bright.
So you’re saying Tech has never benefited from horrible officiating, really? Colorado played 4 conference champs in 1990. How many did Tech play?

Years it took to reach conference championship game:
UGA – 11
GT – 2
Number of times in conference championship game:
UGA – 3 (2-1)
GT – 2 (1-1)
Point of these stats: It will be another 11 years before UGA plays for another SEC championhip. Alabama is back and Florida has never gone away. UGA just get ready to be a middle of the pack SEC team for along time to come. GT has just started thier run under Johnson.

I’m always on the look out for interesting blogs and forums to discuss football. I believe it’ll take the SEC sliding (possibly losing 2 out of their next 3 national title games) for the armor to fall off for the media to stop the slobber fest. Maybe then they’ll be more inclined to schedule OOC games with good teams. But they’ve earned the love affair for the time being. Definitely a lot more than the Big 10 during the late 90’s and early 2000’s. The media is very much in the bag for the Big 10 and are looking for any excuse to put them back on top. At least the SEC has earned it on the field.

Tech76,
Your stats are skewed, to put it mildly. The SEC is far more difficult to win than the ACC. That is an understatement. Notice how you’re pointing out the big dogs of the SEC (who also happen to be the big dogs for the nation) while the ACC has nobody to reference. It’s really pathetic that Tech only has 2 and a half ACC titles in the weakest BCS conference there is.

What a surprise, another disppointing year for ugag fans and all they can come up with is the SEC this SEC that. They can’t claim anything good about their season so they have to claim how good the sec is, which is average at best.

This particular blog never had a chance, as evidenced by the first dozen or so postings. There actually can be good information and entertaining posts. And then there’s other “stuff” like the content here (and most everywhere else of late).
It’s kind of sad, no matter which side of Good Old Fashioned Hate you’re on. I wonder how much a journalism intern would cost to edit these things, remove irrevalent posts, etc. The people with something to say are being drowned out by the crap.

Lake Lanier, would you care to explain how Michigan State and Colorado “earned” national championships? Colorado took five downs to win against Missouri and were GIVEN the OB win against Notre Dame because of a bogus clipping call against the Irish. AND they lost to an 8-4 Illinois team. Tech was 11-0-1, with the tie coming against UNC. Even Tom Osborne, the Nebraska coach at the time, and not one know for petty behavior, voted for Tech over Colorado, having played us both. In 1952 Michigan State played only 9 games having played only 3 conference teams and not going to the Rose Bowl nor, as far as I can tell, any bowl game; Tech played 12 games WITH a Sugar Bowl game win against Ole Miss for a 12-0 record. So please tell me just how Colorado and Michigan State EARNED anything, regardless of what mindless pollsters GAVE them. And whoever pointed out that Tech has only won 2 1/2 ACC titles in 50 years should realize that Tech has only been in the ACC since the 80s; that doesn’t make for 50 years. How many SEC titles has UGAG won since the 80s? Three, I believe…not a bad comparison. And, I might add, that since conference affiliations began in 1896, Tech has won 16 conference championships, and UGAG has only won 13, and that includes the 68 years when Tech and UGAG were in the same conference (first the SAIA, then the Southern, and finally the SEC). You mutts need to get your facts straight before you go claiming to know history.

As said earlier, if the ACC sucks then the SEC had no quality out of conference wins this season. Which doesnt look good for the SEC at all. If the ACC is so terrible then start scheduling more Pac 10, and Big 12 teams (like that would ever happen).

When will dawg nation appreciate the early Christmas present of only having Nesbit on the field for 2.5 quarters.
Why all the talk about A.J. not playing? The reality is, he wouldn’t have been on the field anyway with the success of the running plays. In fact, if ugag had passed more, it would have allowed GT’s offence more time on the field, in which case ugag would have been used as a floor mop. Lest ye forget how close GT was to the first down on the final drive? That’s right GT beat GT…ugag was the benefactor.

Defensive MVP is a no brainer…Derrick Morgan. Our defense has been of the “ole” variety all season, but in those absolute, have to have a stop moments, it has always been Morgan making a sack or pressure to get it done. Two games were essentially won on plays by Morgan, against Wake Forest to force OT and at the end of the ACC championship game against Clemson. He’s a force and I’m sorry to say the Orange Bowl will be his last game at GT. But he’ll make some NFL team very happy next year (perhaps the Falcons might luck up and get him).
Offensive MVP has to be Josh Nesbitt. Don’t get me wrong, I love Jon Dwyer and we don’t win the ACC without him. But the difference between 9-4 last year and 11-2 this year was absolutely Nesbitt. When defenses were stopping Dwyer, Nesbitt willed GT to gain yards and score TD’s and win games. He made the passing game work much more efficiently this year, taking advantage of Demaryius Thomas’ physical advantage. He was as tough as any player in the nation. That play against FSU where the pitch was fumbled and picked up by FSU only to have Nesbitt rip the ball back was the stuff legends are made of. Gaining that yard in OT on 4th down against WF is also a highlight GT fans won’t forget for a long time. He’s a gamer and all you need to do to know how valuable he was to this season is to watch the 2nd Quarter against UGA when he was out of the game where just one more TD would have made it a win for GT. If he plays all those series instead of Jaybo (who to be fair had no significant action until that game), who knows how that game turns out.
My biggest surprise is how god awful the defense has been. I know Michael Johnson, Daryl Richard and Vance Walker were great players, but GT returned enough guys including All-Conference players like Morgan Burnett and Derrick Morgan and all their starters other than those three DL guys. The secondary should have been a strength, but it hasn’t panned out that way. Injury has played a role, losing Cooper Taylor for the year and Dominique Reese for a long stretch, but they should have done better. I wonder if a better defensive coordinator is out there that they could bring in.
