Orange Bowl-bound and the future of the program

Georgia Tech is headed to the Orange Bowl with an 11-2 record.

Back in August, as I was driving back from a Falcons’ preseason game, I got a call from a national sports talk radio show that invited me to come on for a few seconds.

“What do yall want to talk about?” I asked.

“tech. My host thinks they are going to be the national champions,” the producer said.

“This year?” I asked.

“Yes” he said.

“Allright, I can see that,” I said.

And off we went.

Now, some 13-14 weeks later, the Yellow Jackets are the champions of the ACC.

But, let’s look back at the two losses. What would have happened had Tech not had three  games in 12 days, with the last being at Miami? Would they have beaten the Hurricanes? Coach Paul Johnson said he watched film of the game a few weeks ago and that his players looked like they were running in quicksand they were so tired.

What if Tech had converted the fourth down against Georgia and kept its last drive going?

Ifs and buts, Ifs and buts. As Dwight Schrute says, “If ‘onlys’ and ‘buts‘ were candies and nuts, then every day would be Erntedankfest.”

I have no idea what that means, but we all get the point.

So 11-2 with two close losses. What does this mean for the future? Former Navy quarterback Chris McCoy, who played for Johnson, said he told folks that when Tech hired Johnson that they would win a national championship in three years.

What say you?

To compete for a national championship, we’ll have to get a lot better on the defensive side of the field…and get deeper/better/bigger on both sides of the line. That’s doable with good coaching and good recruiting. We’ve got the coaching.

Another Athens idiot. Your program is IRRELEVANT to anything outside of the SEC East..and by the way…you’re the 5th best team in the East.

We on the other hand beat Miss St, who beat Ole Miss, who beat LSU…so I guess we finished second in the SEC West behind Bama using your stupid logic right?

You’re a freaking moron. Glad beating Tech defines your season and made it succesful. We’re going bowling…you fat boys can sit on the couch and cuddle with CMR.

While I would love for GT to play for the national championship next year, several things need to happen first:

1) The defense needs to be built to stand up to more than just a strong wind. While Tech could probably compete for the ACC title again, there’s no way the Tech defense, as-is, could stand up to a national championship contender. Matters only get worse when you consider the likely departure of Derrick Morgan to the pros. The D gives up too many big plays, and that will be a limiting factor going forward. I don’t want to lay all the blame on Wommack, but we need to get to a point that Tech’s defense is feared again.

2) Josh Nesbitt, while great at running the triple option, needs to complete more than 50% of his passes. The running game is excellent, but having Nesbitt more reliable with his passes would force defenses to spread out more, which will only help with the ground game.

3) The ACC needs to regain some credibility. Even if Tech had gone undefeated this year, it’s doubtful they would leapfrog Texas and questionable they would be given preference over Cincinatti (let alone TCU or Boise St) for a shot at the national title. For Tech to have a shot, its conference opponents have to be seen as a threat, not just a bunch of pushovers.

That said, I have faith in Paul Johnson. He’ll do what’s in his power to get us there, and with players he recruited starting to rise in the ranks, I think we’re only going to improve.

Until then, let’s be happy with an ACC Championship and enjoy our trip to the Orange Bowl.

Tech’s defense is the worst one I have seen. I do blame Wommack. Tech cannot be a serious contender with him as defensive coordinator. Granted that we have had injuries but I believe we have some real talent on defense and a total lack of good coaching by our staff is the problem. How is it possible that Spiller can fake inside and juke outside on the same play three times in a row and run long for a touchdown each time. This is basic coaching!!!!
Add on top of this the fact that we have been so good as far as possesion time on offense which means that the defense is well rested and still can’t keep gap integrity—- its coaching!!!!!!!!!!! Johnson needs to make a change in coaching for Defense.

maybe in 100 years..

December 6th, 2009

In order to win the NC, Tech would need to run the tables and end up with a 0 loss season. While at the same time hoping that there are not 2 other undefeated teams from any of the following: Big 12, SEC, Pac 10 or Big 10. An undefeated from the SEC and Big 10 would trump any 0 loss team from the ACC. Sadly, the ACC is not seen as a power conference in CFB and won’t be for a while. Miami will help if they put together a solid year and VA Tech doesn’t crap out. A few other powerful teams would help. Right now the ACC is just a tad bit higher than the Big East and WAC.

Also, what kind of coaching allows the Safety’s to fall for a fake reverse and leave one whole side of the field uncovered for Spiller to walk down the field for easy touchdown. Our offense is great though. We could win a National Title with this offense if we had any kind of decent defense.

Linebackers are a major weakness. We have to get faster there and learn how to coach them. Womack not so impressive with making any kind of adjustments either. Matt, I disagree. Even if we’d gone undefeated, we would’ve been ranked fourth at best. There would be more debate right now, but it would still be Bama and Texas in the title game.

Great day for the Tide & the Jackets. When Dodd made the terrible decision to take Tech out of the SEC, I adopted Bear’s team as my SEC team. Alabama will beat TX by 14 at least; not sure who Tech will play at this writing. Let’s take care of business in Miami first before we start talking about competing for National Championships. We’re on a great trajectory with CPJ… he’ll build badly needed depth along both lines, and at the “skill” positions, by recruiting kids with character and strength over the next year or two (winning a Conference Championship and the Orange Bowl will go a long way toward taking care of that…), then watch as the chips start to fall into place for CPJ, his philosophy, and his vision for our program. We’re in this for the long haul, folks…

We need more than offense. We are the most one dimensional team in the country. Right now, if I were to grade tech – the Offense gets an A, special teams gets C (can’t we just kick the ball 5 yards deep into the end zone on kick offs?), defense gets a D (get one stop a game, that’s poor). We couldn’t stop the run against Vandy! I love CPJ more than anyone, but I can’t stand another year of defense like this. If we’re this bad next year.. Wommack needs to go. And no to Tenuta! I think Tech could be BCS contenders year in, year out. NC contenders maybe. One little break here and there makes all the difference. The good thing is, Tech can realistically set a NC as the goal. This was thought to be beyond the realm of possiblility a very short while ago.

It’s been proven that when the execution is there, this offense is as good as any. The weakness, as all see, is the defense. Tech’s front 7 on D was manhandled by LSU last year, by UGA and Miami this year, and pretty much by Clemson last night. The focus definitely needs to be there for Tech to contend at the top on a regular basis. Wommack gets a lot of blame and maybe it is justified. However, Tech’s undersized D is getting pushed around by bigger, stronger offensive lines. Tenuto tried to negate this disadvantage with a blitz or die attitude to make things happen. Often it worked and often it got the Jackets burned.

The return next year of those now injured should help, but Morgan will be playing on Sundays next year. T.J. Barnes has got the tools if he can get the motivation. I expected him to break out this year. Didn’t happen.

I hate to focus on the negative, when the positives of Tech’s program far outnumber the bad, but we’re talking NC aspirations. Here’s hoping some DL’s and LB’s get a lot bigger and stronger in the offseason. If they can get this fixed, the sky is the limit. If not, get used to more high scoring, nail biting finishes in the future. Lord knows there has been enough of them this year. It’s been a fun ride though. Go Jackets ! Bring back a big gold bowl full of oranges !

Great game Jackets!! Orange Bowl, sole NATIONAL exposure for the program on 1/5/10 – very nice!
Lot of injuries on the D this season. Cooper Taylor played in only 3 games, and Kyle Jackson (the best LB) didn’t play in any. D-line got banged-up too. Giving up 3rd & longs so much this season is what bothers me. Changing the DC … maybe? But I wouldn’t bring in any of the people being mentioned on this blog. Mayber check into the TCU coaching staff???

For the “if GT was 13-0 right now” posts ….. if GT was 13-0 they would be NO WORSE than #3 b/c they started the season ranked higher than TCU, Cincy, & Boise. And the BS that is the BCS wouldn’t let a non BCS conference team be ranked ahead of a BCS conf team. They just won’t do it. It’s all about $$$$$, and their $$$$ is with 6 confs that don’t have TCU, Cincy, or Boise in them. Just look at it this season when Iowa jumped up to #4.

For the bitter GA fans that acutally think GT can’t win the NC, just get over it. If GT wins the Orange Bowl they will be ranked in the top 10 next season, if not the top 5, and should the Jackets win them all next year, I’d bet the bank on it that their 14th win would in the bs BCS NC game.

Tech is definately on its way to becoming the premier college team in the state. They need to beef up lines, and work on defense.

Miami caught them at a good time… and Georgia played its best game against a Tech team that played its worst, and the game was still in doubt until the last minute.

The worm has turned in the state.. Dawg fans refuse to accept it, but I would be good money… over the next 5 years, the glory will be found in Atlanta… not Athens.

An open letter to the “Bulldog Nation”. Trust us, we are not insecure about our program. We just sit and sometimes wonder how the state school with 35k students in the one of the best state high school football programs always recruits a top 5 class but consistently disappoints. UGA should be competing with Florida, USC, Bama, Ohio State, Texas, but somehow doesn’t. It’s called coaching down my good friends. Tech sits back and watches Salley with his 4 championship rings, Teixeira win a MLB championship, and our increasing number of standout NFL players- actually we pull for Stafford to throw to Calvin. We are looking forward to a number of years of watching Dwyer, Thomas and others in the NFL. We understand your high school bench press was a few kegs ago. We understand your feeling a little heat as more top recruits are heading our way. We are looking forward to Miami and for you seeing Favors in action soon. Anyway- hope this helped.

Jackson, Hall, and Taylor will be back and the scholarship level will be back to normal in 2010. Plus the redshirt freshman this year come up. Perkins comes in and might play. Ayers will most likely replace Mario Butler. Ben Anderson, Kyle Jackson, and Sedric Griffin will be solid at linebacker. The secondary should improve with Taylor, Reese, Burnett, Ayers and Reid. D Line will be questionable. Thomas and Stephen Hill will be solid at receiver. Jones and Allen will return at A Back. Dwyer will return at B Back and of course Josh Nesbitt will return to run the offense.

Ranked #9 in the BCS & Orange Bowl Bound!

I don’t think Paul Johnson will let this team get overconfidant as they were last year coming off the big win against per-season #1 UGA. The loss to Georgia this year may have been a blessing in disguise. The team was fired up & anxious to redeem itself in what was a much bigger game than against the 6-5 dawgs. Next year I think we’ll be able to handle the dawgs AND win the ACC. The defense has to be fixed before we can challenge for a National Championship.

First–why are there UGA fans on this blog? Why would Tech fans, Auburn, Tenn and so on invade the UGA blog? Just to talk trash and show what asses you are? Get a life. Trying to remember the big mouthed Clemson fan who came here ten days ago blowing off his mouth about how great Clemson was. Of course, they lost two games in the meantime. Mr. Bigmouth can still think of some ugly things to say about others, I am sure. Pitiful. Trash talk is for morons.

Second– Before Tech contends for a NC, they have to get bigger and stronger on both lines. UGA exposed Tech and Richt deserves credit for seeing it. Tech has more talent, but UGA is stronger on the line and Tech just could not stop them. To Tech’s credit, they darn near came back and won it at the end, but you see what I mean. Tech must get bigger linemen. They must find a pass rush. Tech has an amazing record considering they have an awful defense. I trust that CPJ will do something about that in recruiting. Hey, I am Tech guy and very proud of what they have done is so short a time.

Third– I still think that everyone connected with extending Gailey’s contract a few years back should be put in jail. I don’t think I will ever get over that. Tech has had some pretty bad coaches since Dodd retired, and I think Gailey is about the worst.

ryanegt

I think it can be done. The coaching is there. The offense is almost there. The defense is going to need a lot of work. We need size and depth on both lines. I’m on the fence whether to give Dave Womack another season. Unlike Willie Martinez (who did less with more) I don’t know if our D had enough talent for Womack to work with or if it is indeed a coaching problem. Nevertheless, our defense was horrible and needs to improve for this team to get any better.

I agree that the problem with the D could be a talent problem and not a coaching problem, but the problem is I don’t see GaTech pulling anymore in the future years than the talent they have this year. If they want any success, they’ll have to continually do more with less.

Morgan is the most important of those pieces on defense, so let’s hope he stays. As far as the Dline goes, #41 (tough name to spell) and Robert Hall returning with Cross and the other redshirts, should be OK at end. Like to see more from Barnes and he will hopefully blossom as he is one of those big bodies we need. As well as JC Lanier who was redshirted. The others that played inside this year got trucked against the good teams. Linebackers have pretty good depth. Griffin is gone, but he really has looked slow of late and gets beaten pretty regularly. The return of Jackson will help I hope with Munroe and Steven Sylvester plus the freshmen and redshirts coming up. DBs will be solid. They did not seem to be the main issue this year. The front 7 will have to get lots better for us to make a legit push at NC.
But as long as we have that offense, we just need the D to make a few stops a game.

I think we are right where we should be. We aren’t as bad as UGAg and Miami made us look, but not national championship caliber yet. I mean, play the ifs and buts game, we won some extremely close too, that could have gone the other way.

The problem is that we lack a defense. If we have a game where our offense plays anything less than great, we have a high chance of losing. So our O has little to no margin of error.

To put all “stupid logic” aside, last time I checked the scoreboard at Grant Field it read triple zeros with the score being 30-24 in favor of the visiting team. Also, if you guys want to bring up the score to last year’s game then lets just recap the past 7 years before that. All that aside, congrats to you guys that your technique of bottom-feeding in the ACC paid off culminating in the event of barely getting by a team that had to load up their best player with cortisone because he could barely walk but despite of that was able to run circles around your defense. On a side note that same team was run out of Columbia, SC by a team that the “underachievers” in Athens beat. Im sorry I was just using some of your “stupid logic”.

By the way are you guys gonna put the score of the Georgia game on your championship rings this year, too?

The future is bright at Georgia Tech. While the SEC is SLIGHTLY stronger than the ACC this year, the difference isn’ huge. Three SEC teams in the BCS top 15 and also three ACC teams. What’s the big deal?

There are no excuses for GT’s loss to UGA this year but there are THREE important REASONS (in order of importance):

1. Coach Mark Richt’s great game plan. He played to his team’s strength, his offensive line and GT’s weakness, defensive line. Great strategy and it limited mistakes. It’s funny that no UGA fans mentioned this.

2. Nesbitt’s injury was not the result of dirty play but it had two important consequences: it cost GT an early touchdown and more importantly took away 1/2 of an option from our offense for the rest of the game because Josh couldn’t plant and make those 8-10 yard power runs. Look what he did to a much better Clemson defense.

3. Thomas drops an easy pass. This happens in football.

I like GT’s chances in both the near and long term futures. Beat Iowa in the Orange bowl and be ranked 5th or 6th in the 2010 pre-season polls. Since UGA won’t be ranked pre-season, one early loss to maybe USC will kill the dawgs. That’s just the way it is.

Tech has better personnel on defense than their performance indicates. That says coaching. Wommack has to go. Our outside linebackers are very weak. Spiller fakes going off tackle and then runs wide. The outside linebackers are crashing in assuming off tackle and he runs right around them without being touched. Then he faces DBs in open field which the best DB in the country would have major problems with. Give me linebackers that maybe have less talent, but are tough and have brains like Ted Roof and Jim Anderson. Wommack has to take the majority of the responsibility. Compare what Johnson gets out of our offense with an offensive line that will probably not have one guy drafted by the pros with one lineman 254 and one 274. Answer is simple he (Johnson) gets the most out of the talent he has and Wommack does not. By the way Tenuta fans take a look at Notre Dame’s sorry defense before calling for the return of Tenuta. Picking a new defensive coordinator is going to be very tough because of the offenses today score so many points. There are frankly very few great defenses around today. Many people think Will Muschamp hung the moon. Take a look at how many points Texas allowed to Texas A & M and many other teams this year. I just hope Johnson can find a good one.

I think that its really funny that all of the Tech fans have moved on from the uga game while the uga fans have let that game define their season. That is the only good thing that has come out of athens this year and I think that uga is in for another tough year in 2010.

My wife is a UGA alumni and she gets extremely sick of the uga fans that comment on Tech blogs like this one. GET A F’ng LIFE!!! Did you beat Tech by a landslide.. .Hell NO. Yes you played a good game, but what happened the rest of the year. You lost about as many games as you won going into the game against GT. Maybe we pityed you and figured that’s the least we can do. Hell the last time I did math 11-2 was better than 7-5 any day. Oh.. I am sorry, let me help you with the MATH since UGA fans need help in the area of basic MATH. ((wins) / (wins + losses)) * 100 = percentage… now that equates to GT = 85% wins to UGA = 58%.. Also that would be big F in a course at UGA… Oh.. and why you beat up on GT’s victory… who did UGA play the other night for the ACC… notttta!!!!.. Oh and you want to talk about victories. How about back in 1990 when GT won the 1990 NATIONAL CHAMPIONS – Tech beat UGA 40-23… and you UGA fans want to go around and brag about 30-24…. all it would have taken would have been one more touchdown to beat you on Saturday, but we figured you might as well walk away with something. Since you are a UGA Fan, I dont see you bragging about UGA’s 7-5 stats….
UGA – What a f*ck*ng losing team….
Perhaps you should be rooting for a real team like GT except for sticking with your sorry losing UGA dawgs….
No need to thank GT for letting you win the game.

Questionable D, I totally agree, and like on offense it looks like our defense is going to have to get creative. John Tenuta’s blitz-happy defenses would often get lit up on some big plays, but they could also pitch a shut out every now and then – Tenuta definitely did more with less. It was a much better system than we have now. It seems like now we have to score 30 points a game just for a chance to win.

With this offense in place, we can compete with anyone in the country. Remember, it’s only the second year running it with players who were not recruited for this scheme. Josh threw the ball better this year than last and should get even better next year, especially if Bey Bey is back. That will make it even easier for the new B Back to gain yards. (that’s right, new B Back. hate to say it, no way Dwyer comes back)

To all the uga people, I didn’t think it would be true, but the ACC Championship win and trip to the OB really does make up for the loss. We’re in a BCS bowl, and there are only 10 teams in the country that can say that.

As for a NC, I feel a lot like I did in the late 90s when #14 was amazing us all. Joey Hamilton and the boys could score on anyone, anytime, but the D kept us from being a national power. He finished second in the Heisman, and we still couldn’t make it to a BCS game. I don’t see CPJ letting that happen this time around. If we win the Orange Bowl and show all the writers and fans in the country we’re for real, we’ll be top 5 to start 2010 with a real chance at the NC.

GO JACKETS!!!!!

UGA fans are on this blog since they have nowhere else to go – no one bothers to write anything about the 7-5 mediocre bullsh**Dogs, and no one cares about the bowl game (Toilet Bowl) they are going to. So to make themselves relevant again, they come here.

If you were such a HUGE tech fan your wouldn’t be watching the game, you would be AT the game.

Future of Tech football? Because so few seniors, GT can only recruit 12 players for this class (Maybe more with NFL exits, etc.) PJ knows he can have TOP 15 type of program with ANYTHING CLOSE to a defense and an OL. Look at the talent in this class on D! Look at the amount of red shirts on OL and DL. He is building a sustainable LONG TERM PROGRAM!! PJ and his wife are from the south. The only program I could ever see him leave for is UF. He turned down Auburn and a big raise last year!

ALL commits for this class are from the state of GA………………Get a DEFENSE and some HOGS on OL and we ROLL for a long time!!!

With a couple of years with the same level of success (competing for BCS bowls), then we’ll get a lot better recruits on the defensive side of the ball. The offense really runs itself, except for the quarterback play. He really has to be perfect, and Nesbitt just might get there next year, if he’s not there already. By perfect, I mean he has to be big and strong, to take hits and get yards after the first defender makes contact. He has to be fast, to speed around defenders and make plays. Most importantly, he has to be smart, to know when to dive, when to run, and when to pitch. Finally, he has to be a good passer, completing at least half of his passes and preferably two thirds, with few interceptions. The passing part is the only part that Nesbitt is lacking in, which is why we’ve had such great success with him (he’s truly an amazing warrior). With enough years of repeated success, we should be able to go anywhere in the country and recruit the best athlete at the quarterback position. I’m talking about someone like Ohio State’s Tyrelle Pryor, where rather than go to a place and have an offense crafted around him, he can step right in and start winning championships.

All that said, it’s going to take repeated success of these proportions to accomplish all of that. We need to go out and get the fastest defensive players from that swamp in Florida.

We run this state nerds! Your best couldn’t beat our worse. You’ll always have to remember that. Stings and burns, doesn’t it?

It is so cute how excited all the Tech fans are getting. Maybe Georgia can win the Orange Bowl too. Bwahahahahaahahahahahaahaha.

GT ANCHORAGE,

That is exactly what some geeks from your fan base did for 365 days. Are you too good for some pay back?

If the Yech program is on such a high note, where is m, St.Simons, Pi$$boy, and Yellow Fuzz? They haven’t posted since the loss to their daddy. Shouldn’t they be happy and talk all sorts of crap?

The four aformentioned tools above are excellent representations of the Joke by Coke. Florida fans don’t hold a candle to you pricks when you are winning. They at least act like they’ve been there. A tech fan is so used to losing that when they actually win, you can’t shut them up. Weak, god-awful people. I’ve never met one that I would pi$$ on if he or she were on fire.

30-24 sweet dreams!

What future? Johnson will be losing his two all conference players in Dywer and Morgan at season’s end. Thomas will surely leave as well, despite what he says. This is fluke season with Gailey’s recruits that Johnson will never duplicate again

Hey all you that are talking about Tech’s defense…I just read that of the 13 recruits that Tech has gotten are on the defensive side of the ball. Hope this will make the difference with some of the other players that were hurt this year.

I for one am looking forward to playing Iowa. We have never played them before, they are from a conference that is supposed to be superior to ours, they are a name and it will be a huge win when we pull it off…

Tech’s defense is a joke, just like their overall program. It took the ACC having HALF of its members suffering from a .500 or worse season just for them to FINALLY win the ACC. Pathetic
