It may not have the glitz of the battle of the unbeatens in the Fiesta, but the Orange Bowl will be a great matchup of offense vs. defense: Tech’s o’s vs. Iowa’s x’s. Or is it the other way around?
Either way, it should be fun to watch.
Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said that he couldn’t remember the last time he faced a team that uses this much option, and that trying to simulate it in practice will be quite a challenge.
The Hawkeyes’ offense isn’t flashy, but with a defense as stout as Iowa’s is, they don’t have to be. A couple of scores here and there is all they need. It’s kind of like Tech’s defense. It doesn’t have to stop everyone all the time, just a couple a game seem to work fine.
Anyway, it’s beena long day so I’ll open it up to your thoughts about the matchup.
As always, follow the AJC’s coverage if Georgia Tech on facebook at http://bit.ly/7QyRsX

Josh is a warrior and the Jackets will prevail. Iowa for some reason was televised heavily in this market. I guess the win over an ordinary Penn State was supposed to mean something.

Iowa’s offense has been lackluster this season, but they are traditionally a power running team, and they have relatively big guys up front. They may give the Tech D yet more trouble. A good match-up on both sides of the ball. Iowa’s D should be physical enough and smart enough to force some stops against Tech.

I’ve watched all of Iowa’s games this year and a lot of my friends are huge Iowa fans. Their conservative style is perfect for us because our offense will get them out of their comfort zone. Also their defenses stats are irrelavent because they will have to use completely new schemes against Tech
Could not have been a better match up for tech

Remember Iowa relies heavily on interceptions as well (lead the nation in INTs actually). So our running game takes that threat away from them as well.

Ahhhh, the sweet smell of success. Yet again, another team not famaliar Kirk Ferentz’s brand of power football with natural atheletes (with speed) is full of their oats. I hope you team is dipping their stingers in the same flowers. Get ready for the bullies of the big team. Oh, and be sure to tell your running back to call them Mr. Clayborn and Mr. Angerer. Iowa prevails by 10.

Tech is in trouble. We need to face poor defensive teams so that we can outscore the opponent. Iowa has a good enough defense to either force a turnover or make us punt a couple times. Unfortunately the Tech defense can’t stop anybody unless we get lucky with a turnover. (It has been 10 quarters since Tech forced a punt.) Tech must make some changes on the defensive staff to remain competitive in the future.

Their D line is as small as ours so they’ll be fast but UGA and Clemson have huge, and extremely fast, linemen so they shouldn’t be able to whip us as badly in the A gap. Iowa has not seen a team as fast as Tech all year and we should put up some points. On the other hand, they can throw the ball, and Morgan Burnett is our only DB up to job, this could be a shoot out.

BAD SPORTS. It doesn’t matter who Georgia Tech plays in what sport; Georgia Tech is ALWAYS BAD SPORTS about it.
UGA beat Georgia Tech 65-60 today on TV Channel 45 CSS. MaChelle Joseph and Georgia Tech still have never beaten The Lady Dawgs in Athens, ever. The all-time record stands at 3-29 for Georgia Tech against UGA women in basketball. The Georgia Women also have a higher ACADEMIC PROGRESS RATE than Georgia Tech’s Women’s Basketball Team.
UGA looked like the smarter players today by causing 29 Turnovers by Tech’s women and by UGA going on a 13-2 run to end the game. UGA is in the Top 10 of the RPI and Georgia Tech is not in the Top 25 of any Poll. So far this season The Lady Dawgs have beat RPI # 4 Oklahoma, # 14 Rutgers and then # 21 Georgia Tech. Georgia Tech has beat no team in the Top 107 of the RPI.
On the men’s side, Georgia has a Winning Record against Paul Hewitt, who also not only has the worse APR in men’s basketball than UGA, but more importantly is on NCAA PROBATION for having a men’s ACADEMIC PROGRESS RATE of 914, not only the lowest APR in the country, but also causing the NCAA to LIMIT GEORGIA TECH IN MEN’S BASKETBALL TO ONLY 11 SCHOLARSHIPS THIS SEASON.
Congratulations to MaChelle Joseph, who LAST YEAR WHEN SHE LOST TO ANDY LANDERS, had Andy Landers come up to her after the game and extend a handshake, only to see the battle-axe MaChelle Joseph just purposely walk by Andy Landers who has NEVER LOST to Georgia Tech in Athens EVER.
This year, after the defeat of Georgia Tech, MaChelle Joseph went ahead and shook Andy Landers’ hand.
Georgia Tech just has a hard time competing with The University of Georgia’s Athletic Department in ACADEMICS.
And, sports.
MaChelle Joseph had said before the game today, that beating Georgia at Georgia would be the defining moment of the Georgia Tech Women’s Basketball Program, today.
She isn’t any different than Paul Johnson and the women aren’t any different from the football players who were totally sure they would beat UGA before they played us, too. Defining Moment ? Why not wait until you beat UGA ever in women’s basketball in Athens, and then say it was the defining moment MaChelle instead of bragging pregame that it is before you actually ever have beat UGA in Athens in Women’s Basketball.

I agree with you Joe. They should have put both TCU and boise state against BCS conference teams to compare how good they are. I have a feeling that TCU would’ve killed us, but…
I heard one Gators’ fan saying he THINKS his team is better than any of the undefeated teams other than Alabama. He might be right, but without a playoff, his one loss team will take a second seat against undefeated teams.
BCS is a whack. I think BCS stands for Beauty Contest Show.
Give us a playoff and a real Champions.

BuLL(crap)Dawg, good for you that your women’s basketball is stronger than GT’s. Congrats.
One thing though: what’s wrong about saying winning against UGA would be a defining moment for GT’s women’s program? If you are a lesser program, it would mean a lot if you beat more premier program, just like beating GT was your defining moment this year.
Still, we are bowling in Miami. Where are you bowling this season?

And, you come running in here to exclaim how great the ACC is football this year.
B.S.
The SEC is 6 games over .500 against the other BCS Conferences and the ACC is not only 2 games under .500 against the other BCS Conferences but for good measure is the only BCS Conference to lose any games against 1-AA teams and the ACC lost 2 games to 1-AA opponents too.
And, you come running in here bragging how great the ACC is in football this year.
The ACC 12 teams are an average BCS Ranking of 51 for the dead last worst average BCS Ranking of all conferences.
The SEC averages Number 35 in the BCS Rankings for our 12 teams.

Perfect matchup for the Jackets! We have a chance to(offensively beat a good Iowa program, making our climb for the MNC next year very possible. I have NO delusions that we will give the Hawkeye’s the best chance to have a stellar day on the offensive side of the ball…. I think the offense will have a field day with their defense. There is little or no chance that Iowa has seen anything like what’s going to be in Miami… (offensively) I can only hope that after our win in Miami, that CPJ will make the appropriate changes on the defensive side of the ball.
On a side note, you have to feel sad for BuLLdawg, talking about women’s basketball on a football blog??? What has UGA football come to, that their fans are trash talking about women’s basketball. Jeez, come on BuLldawg, there is always next year!

I haven’t had the opportunity to see any Georgia Tech games this year, but I’ve always had a positive impression of the team, and this season, I felt that Georgia Tech was slighted somewhat in the rankings. From what I understand, GA Tech uses a nice spread offense, similar to Michigan State, and we saw how much trouble Iowa had with Michigan State. This game is an interesting match-up. Iowa has been very successful against SEC teams in bowl games (3-1) but have we even played an ACC team lately? I’m not very familiar with the ACC teams, but I’m pretty sure Iowa hasn’t faced an ACC team in a long time.
Iowa can stack up against anybody. They took Ohio State to the brink and but for a few dropped passes would be undefeated this season. I haven’t watched any of GT’s games, they may be able to boast of similar “what-if’s.” I’ll say this, though – don’t dismiss the Hawkeyes. They’re the kind of the team that gets a lot of mileage out of being underestimated and overlooked. GT has a fantastic coaching staff, and I expect the Jackets to come ready to play, so this isn’t much of a concern in a bowl game, but for you fans in Atlanta, don’t be surprised of Iowa puts up more of a fight than you seem to anticipate. The Hawkeyes also have a fantastic coaching stuff that makes great adjustments to different play styles.
Iowa fans are looking forward to the trip to Florida. I’ve only been to Atlanta once, but I liked the city, and was a Falcons fans for a while when former Iowa receiver Tim Dwight played there in the Super Bowl year. Best of luck all around.

I feel sorry for the Orange bowl. They get the most undeserving BCS conference champion (Tech) and the worse possible at-large team. The good thing is neither of the worthy at-large teams (TCU or Boise) are going to be wasted by having to play Tech. It would have been fun though, watching TCU’s D destroy Tech’s offense. But I’m sure all the other BCS bowls are excited that the Orange gets to take the ratings hit with the trash teams. It means better ratings for them. Oh and, good luck to the ACC champs (UGA) in the Independance bowl.

Sooooooo much bitterness from the UGA fans! The truth, Dawg Gone Truth, GT is the better team this year. Yeah, you guys pulled it out this year, but the bottom line is that GT is becoming a better program than UGA. Your dominance is over, the recruiting battle will begin to even out, and what was once a gimme game for UGA is now very competitive. This should be a very interesting matchup. Iowa, like GT, has had a lot of games that could have gone either way, could have won them or could have lost them.
How they prepare for the different offensive style will determine the outcome of the game. GT will have a tough time defensively, just as they have all season. Injuries have really decimated the defensive side of the ball as well as the offensive line.
To all of the UGA fans that feel the need to post such useless drivel on here without any meaningful commentary, keep it up, it is the sincerest form of flattery and we all understand it is posted out of jealousy. To those with mature, meaningful commentary, thank you. May we meet next year that Saturday after Thanksgiving with mutually unstained records.
Back to Iowa, the team actually annoyed me for a while at the beginning of the season with al of the hype they were getting. They seemed to eek out wins at the last second that they may not have deserved. Anyway, good luck to both teams.

“Hmmmmmmmmm”….Your kidding…right? You really think Tech is about to end UGA dominance and level the playing field? Impossible. UGA beat you in a down year when we lost our top 3 offensive players (Stafford, Moreno and Mo Mass). We’ll soon have the best D coordinator that our deep pockets can buy, a 50 million dollar expansion of our (already superior to Tech’s) weightroom and facilities. We are again racking up the state in recruiting….you honestly think PJ can recruit against us? Impossible. We return all 5 starting OLmen that bullwhipped your DL, our 2 RBs that trashed your D for over 300 yards rushing. The best WR/TE combo in the nation (A.J. Green/Orson Charles). If you thought this season was a beatdown, next season will be a true demolishing. You’re only kidding yourself Tech fan. 9-1 my friend….we are pulling away and there’s no way Tech can ever catch us.

@C from Marietta …. I’m with you. The ultimate situation would be for UGA and GT to come into each year’s game undefeated, with Tech winning maybe two out of every three years (until the overall records are more balanced). If we could do that, then there would be a good shot for a team from GA to compete for the MNC every year. At that point, we could (hopefully) do away with all the mindless insults and instead acknowledge that both schools have excellent football programs.
As for the Orange Bowl, my only complaint is that they’ve scheduled it for a TUESDAY night. It would have made traveling much easier if the game were played during the holiday weekend. Nevertheless, I hope we can take a good crowd to Miami and cheer the Jackets to victory.

This matchup is a bit disrespectful to the ACC. How could the ACC commissioner stand for this? You have a conference champion vs. the second or third best team in an overrated conference (Big 10). Big 10 is weaker than usual this year. A win is just a win for GT, but a loss would not go unnoticed.

Intellectually, Tech v Iowa will be interesting on a number of fronts.
I’m sure we’ll see a lot more information about Iowa, but while Iowa may think (as so many others have) that they can prepare for this offense and be OK, I will be interested to see any analysis on team speed; if it’s true that Tech has an advantage in team speed, particularly the Tech O v the Iowa D, I think that might be too much for Iowa to simulate in practice.
And if the solutions Iowa finds in practice don’t work, they’ll not have the time or the speed-of-thought to adjust dynamically during the game…which should give CPJ’s ability to adjust on-the-fly a tremendous advantage over the Iowa D.
I am worried about Iowa’s offense v Tech’s D (or lack thereof).

Check out USA Today’s Top 25 Coaches Ballot which shows how each coach ranked the teams.
Particularly, the ACC and SEC coaches. UGA received one vote and finished ranked number 39. Who was the only coach that voted for them? Well, here’s a hint, CMR used to work for him and he just retired. Cutcliffe and Rich Brooks’ votes were interesting, too – no love for the Jackets…

Hawkeye – We had our share too, but we were not undefeated at the time and had not had those “close calls” by then. The game that really got me was against Indiana which the refs completely botched time and time again. Watching those refs was like watching the SEC refs. I really did not care who won the game, but I thought the game was handed to Iowa. If anything, I was cheering for Iowa in that one given ESPN ’s Heather Dinich’s Indiana affiliation. My comments above really relate to the early season when I watched Iowa closer, really did not follow them after their first loss.
Like I said, this game should be a fun one to watch. I just hope we don’t shoot ourselves in the foot like we did the last bowl game. I don’t see CPJ letting that happen this time. The good thing is he still has the UGA game to point to as an example of what happens when focus is lost.

CPJ a genius? I just laughed so hard I $hit myself. Anybody who gets their pants pulled down by Senor Willie Martinez is no genius. He’s overrated, and he runs a high school offense. If the Bees played in a real conference they would be 7-5, 6-6, 5-7 consistently. Johnson’s got an ideal situation – playing in a crappy conference with a moronic fanbase that is dumb enough to pop a boner everytime he opens his country mouth.

Bulldog Nation,
Next year you’re starting from scratch again with a new QB, a new DC, and a shaky OC. You won’t be highly ranked pre-season, so you’ll likely have NO shot at a MNC (assuming you’d actually win all your games, ha!). Tech, meanwhile, will probably be ranked pre-season top 10 (assuming everybody comes back, and pre-season top 20) if one or two players leave early.
So, while you’re in Shreveport, make sure you make reservations for the 2011 Independence Bowl too!!!!

TAMPA, Fla. – As Georgia Tech wide receiver Demaryius Thomas headed out of Raymond James Stadium to the team bus following the Jackets’ 39-34 win over Clemson in the Dr. Pepper ACC championship game, he answered one final very important question.
Yes, Thomas said with a huge grin, he’s coming back.
Apparently, the NFL can wait for at least one of the Jackets’ most talented juniors.
Really?
“I’m coming back,” Thomas repeated.

NCR – There is no IF 1 or 2 players leave – Dwyer and Morgan will be gone. Any junior likely to be drafted in the 1st 2 rounds this year should leave for the draft and get a good contract before the NFL locks out the players in 2011.
GT should be ranked preseason next year but who knows where they will be ranked – probably in the teens like this year. Remember that it is all about perceptions and that half the voters have no real clue about more than 10 – 15 teams. Some teams always get votes.
Think about it – FSU was ranked #1 in the Atlantic in preseason, #18 in the AP, this year (just because they are FSU – 5 years of underperforming not withstanding) and likely will be ranked next year.

Because the BCS couldn’t justify leaving either team out this year, they isolated them in one game rather than playing them against BCS league teams. Previously, the Fiesta Bowl was gushing about picking Iowa to bring their 50,000 fan base to the game since it’s about money. Fiesta must be getting some kick-backs from the other BCS bowls to take the financial hit. By the way, you really must take and “pass” a course on Logic. In your reality Alabama should be celebrating winning last year’s National Championship, and Tech can claim last year’s ACC Championship and Orange Bowl win. Grow up, your team won “a” game. Congratulations, buy some rings and Hold on to them.

It’s funny to see UGA fans try to make 7-5 sound good. I would love to have a rematch against Georgia this year again, but of course that won’t happen. In two years, Paul Johnson has completely turned GT football around. If Georgia fans think they will dominate Tech every year, they are completely wrong. Remember UGA fans, Paul Johnson is still playing with Chan Gailey’s recruits. Paul will be bringing in some good talent.

Tech82 – GT won in the Citrus Bowl in 1990. By “Major Bowls” the networks mean the Rose, Orange, Sugar and Fiesta/Cotton. Cotton used to be considered one of the Big 4, now the Fiesta is.
The ACC didn’t have a tie in with one of the Big 4 back then. In 1990 the tie ins were Rose Big10-PAC10, Sugar SEC-at large, Cotton SWC-at large, Orange Big Eight- at large. Just like today, it was all about the money.

Here’s the read on Iowa (since most of you GT fans seem to know very little): Iowa played a top-25 team that boasts to be one of the FASTEST in the Pac10 in Arizona. The hype going into that game coming from Zona fans was that Iowa was a “slow BigTen team” that couldn’t handle their “speedy athletes”. Iowa fans just kept quiet and sat back and watched Zona struggle to get past the Iowa D all game long. Yes, Arizona players were very fast (much like South Carolina’s in last year’s Outback Bowl), but it turned out that Iowa’s D was not only fast, but very SMART, STRONG and SKILLED.
There is a lot more to winning games then speed, so I do not agree that speed will be a factor. However, Iowa’s weakness at D this year has been stopping a strong running game. Michigan ran the ball consistently against Iowa and their style is similar to GTs in that they do a lot of “draw read” gimmicks to keep the D from committing to filling the gaps. I see GT doing the same thing and picking Iowa’s D apart 5-8 yards at a time. I see GT scoring around 30, similar to Michigan’s performance.
On the offensive side of the ball, I see that GT fans follow media hype more then the games themselves. Iowa’s offense has been banged up badly all year, but they definitely have weapons and are fully capable of putting up points. They will have a fully healthy QB and RBs, along with a near 100% o-line. I think you’re going to see a lot of aggressive play calling as KF knows we will have to be more aggressive than usual to put GT away. I look for the o-line to dominate, and when that happens Iowa’s offense is deadly. If GT can’t stop the run or pressure Stanzi, it’s game over.
Oh, and Iowa fans aren’t all that jazzed about getting GT either. If you look-up bowl stats and program accomplishments, GT is less marquee then Iowa… by far. But I could care less about big names, I like smash-mouth football and I think this match-up will provide PLENTY of that!

I love it myself, all of the interlopers from outside the Tech family coming to our blog. I guess they got tired of moaning about their pitiful teams, so they come over her to bash a successful program this year. I feel for them, for the ACC had one modern National Champion (shared or otherwise) in their original group of ACC schools, until Tech and FSU gave them three. They would have been a lower tier conference until the outsiders (Tech, FSU, VTech and Miami) came to boast the national recognition of their conference. Now it seems going forward 3 of those same 4 will carry the football banner in the future.

Washington would be Big 10 champs since they beat usc who beat Big 10 champ ohio st. Could you honestly say that wake is better than oregon or washington better than ohio st? Unless you are an ignorant pup, you would not. Season’s are not defined by one game. Anything can happen on any given game day (purdue beating ohio st). It’s football, and that’s what makes it great.

Iowa’s DBs are stellar as well (their Jr CB Spievey is going NFL & is 1st team all BigTen, as well as their SS). If I were to coach against them though, I would pick on the FS spot. He tends to play deep so you can get wide-open around 20 yards over the middle.
As for your question, Iowa tends to run between the tackles but only has had success with A.Robinson in. He is a pounder that can pick-up the tough yards. Iowa will stay between the tackles 90% of the time and won’t give-up even if it’s not working. They like to wear down d-lines and get most of their ground yards in the 4th quarter. The only problem with that is we could be down by 14 by then with GTs offense.

Yawn….it’s ok pups. One day you will be relevant again on a national stage. Just not now. Hey, at least you will always have 1980 and your 2 recent SEC championships.
It’s just sad how much it tears you up to see when you finally realize that GT is the more relevant national program right now. GT is on the national stage….UGA won’t even play again this season after the month of December.
It’s ok; maybe one day you will get another recognized MNC to go with your other two….then you’ll only need 1 more to be as historically relevant as GT football. Although, looking at the state of things, we might get another one before you become relevant again.
I’m glad our gift to you will make you have something to cheer about in the offseason.

Paul in RDU – you’re right, I was one year short of D-Day. My apologies, I’m usually very good with historic dates. But it only strengthens my position. We were attacked in 1941, but the ramp up effort leading to D-Day lasted three and a half years. In fact, Half of UGA’s team fought overseas in WWII, including Trippi, Sinkwich, etc. Bottom line, it’s safe to say that all schools fielded legitimate football teams in 1942. Yes, UGA won the NC that year.
However, in 1917, nearly every male 17-25 in the country was in the trenches. How could tech find anybody to play, let alone find anybody to play? Oh, that’s right. They had ringers from Fort MacPherson play high school kids. Yeah, that sounds like a NC to me. Typical tech b.s. argument.
Not surprised.

Then he got even more pissed when uga bitched around the best team he ever had at Southern in 2000. He literally thought they were going to win that game, and he said as much in the weeks leading up to it. Had to have been embarrassing how that turned out for him. Then this year happened. Timbo, I’ll continue to respect what uga has done over all the years….they, consistantly win and appeared to set themselves up to be in a position to win the NC these past few years. Whether it was injuries or sec officials, uga has consistantly fallen short. Tech has 4 NCs compared to uga’s 1….Tech is 11 and 2 this season with losses to Miami and uga…..HOW are you going to tell me that this doesn’t eat you and your pup friends up WHILE spending SO much time on a blog that has nothing to do with uga?! We’ve won our NCs in the systems that have been in place….got the trophies to prove it. Fact is, and all the Tech fans realize this, that you pups are freaking out over the turning of the table. The dawgs upset Tech this year and you know that for the next few years, IF uga beats Tech it’ll be an ‘upset’! Tech is on it’s way up and the dawgs are firing their defensive staff…… I’d say I’m sorry, but I’m not…..been waiting a while for this! Nice win, though!

Georgia Tech better not overlook this Iowa Team. What most people out of the Midwest region do not realize is how well coached of a team Iowa is. There is not a single school in the country that does more with less then Iowa does. Iowa develops there players and turns them into top performing athletes. Just take a look at current Hawkeyes in the NFL..its 33..trumps georgia techs.. Iowa is quiet but confident but I can tell you one thing that wont be quite. Miami. Iowa travels better then almost every school in the Nation. They brought over 40000 to Miami in 2003 and they should expect much more then that for this game. Tech wont bring more then 10k I bet. Iowa will be prepared for the option and our defense actualyl lines up perfect for it. We have 2 of the top Defensive ends in the country in Adrian Clayborn and Broderick Binns. Stopiing the option starts there with outside contain. Our linebacking core is extremely atheltic and fast. We play a straight up 4-3 and our backers have alot of experience covering wide recievers because we never play nickel or dime. The athletiscim is there to contain the outside run attack. And if you really think Iowa is going to get blown out you are just an idiot. Iowa has not lost a game by more then 7 points in over 2 years! True, we dont win pretty and Iowa is not known to really blow anyone out but no matter who we play is always going to be tight and Iowa can beat absolutely anyone. Ricky Stanzi will be back in Action to torch a rather pathetic Georgia Tech Secondary. Our Offensive Line will blast through a prtty soft Georgia Tech front opening holes for the return of Adam Robinson. Iowa will punch you in the Jaw..leave you on the ground and helpless and before you know it we our walking outof the South with the Orange Bowl trophy. Hawkeye Nation will be there..40,000 plus..get ready..we are loud..obnoxious..and after our football beats yall up..we will drink you under the table..GO HAWKS!

Iowa has played a nickle this year, that’s a common misconception though. However, we will not need a nickle against GT… all we will need is a deep d-line to keep them from getting gassed and a hard hitting backfield, which we have both of those.

Timbo – there you go again. I’m sure that you spent your time googling WW II but you should have spent some time looking up WW I as well.
The US only declared war on Germany in April 1917 and didn’t start sending large numbers of troops to France until Spring 1918. In fact one of the reasons for Ludendorff’s offensive on the Western Front in Spring 1918 was to try to win the war before the Dough Boys arrived.
You might want to read Ferro’s book (The Great War) or Keegan’s (The First World War) and learn something.
And as for comparing 1917 with 1942 – don’t be giving me that “war didn’t start until 1944″ nonsense. You know that some of the key battles in the Pacific were in the Summer of 1942, right? Coral Sea? Midway? ring a bell? Heck they have the movie on TBS about every 6 months or so.
I’ll give you that just about all of the colleges fielded legitimate teams in 1942 and that UGA was hailed as NC by several groups (as was Ohio State and Wisconsin, by the way), but in no way is GT’s 1917 MNC not legitimate – they were ranked #1 by all of the polls.

Thanks for the synopsis. That’s the impression I had about your offense – running hard between the tackles. Any team that can outscore PSU in Happy Valley in the 4th quarter is doing something right.
Your safety shouldn’t have to worry about many 15 yard passes in front of him – he’ll either have to come up to play the option or go back deep to cover Thomas or Hill.
It should be a hard fought, fairly high scoring game. Enjoy the trip to Miami. I know Iowa will bring a huge number of fans – I’ve spent plenty of time up in the cornfield states in Winter and a bowlk game in S FLA is just the medicine you need.

Why so many pathetic dawg posts here? I don’t see so many Jackets trash-talking on the dawg blogs. Could it be a massive Inferiority Complex? A few reasons why that may be so:
1. 11-2 vs. 7-5
2. BCS #9 vs. who cares?
3. Orange Bowl & South Beach vs. Shreveport & freezing your A– Off.
4. 4 National Championships vs. 2 NC’s.
5. Conference Champions vs. not even lose
6. Highest SAT’s in the nation vs. too low to measure

GeorgiaHawkeye- wow, just went back and read your rather arrogant post from 4:11. I have to say, I had no idea there was a “Hawkeye nation”, or even such as thing as a Iowa fan in GA. First of all, no serious Tech fan is overlooking any team that finished 10-2 and got an at large bid. With our defense, we can’t overlook anybody. We lost to an average UGA team because of our porous defense, so the fact that a Big Ten team running the ball on us is not unexpected. What would be surprising is if your defense can actually stop the option. Historically, no one has stopped the option yet in two years, if Tech doesn’t self-destruct with penalties and turnovers. Miami did a pretty good job this year, but that’s it. UGA did pretty good early and got lucky in the end. Tech will get its yards and score if they don’t stop themselves. What you have to ask is, can Iowa score over 40 points? That is what it will take to beat Tech. I bet not considering your season high was 42 against Indiana. Don’t even get me started on the drinking challenge! Good luck, but Tech runs it for 400+.

Tech fans don’t travel??? Did anybody notice the swarm of Tech fans in Tampa Saturday night? There were probably more Clemson fans there, but that’s only because Clemson is a much larger school than Tech. And I am sure Tech will sell out its entire allotment of tickets for the Orange Bowl, and even more Tech fans will buy from other sources. Big (they don’t know who to count past) TEN schools travel big too, but mainly to get away from the cold weather. I seriously doubt there will be more Iowa fans in Miami than Tech fans, but who cares if there are? The only thing that matters is the final score, and I see the Jackets’ offense baffling Iowa’s defense all night long. Now, if we can only find a defense to stop them !!!
BTW, Tech now has 3 more total conference championships than the mutts, INCLUDING the 64 years both were in the same conference (SAIA, Southern, and SEC). That goes along with having more national championships than the mutts.

Excuse me… there is only one ‘T’ in star trek. Wanted to clear that up before someone got really upset with me.
I looked it up. There were approximately 42,815 seats filled on Saturday night in Raymond James Stadium. Much better than last year’s game in Jacksonville, but still only about 65% of total capacity (65,857). I guess less than 2/3 is “plenty”…
A little deeper dig found that over 57,000 seats were sold though, meaning that almost 14,000 fans decided they didn’t want to miss SNL.

Iowa has substantial NFL talent on both lines. The key to the game will be the ability of the Iowa defense to keep tech off the board or held to FG’s on at least 2 of their first 3 drives. Iowa is not a high scoring big play offense, but if they can keep tech off the board and can manage to not go 3 and out in their first few drives the Iowa O-line should keep the hawks on the field virtually all day.
Iowa likes to beat people up with their big boys, and they have NFL talent on both their offensive and defensive lines (and in the case of Bryan Bulaga and Adrian Clayborn, first day, if not first round talent).
This game seems like a fairly simple pick to me, if it stays close the hawks win. If its a blow out, its because Tech couldn’t be stopped.

Iowa is a very conservative team, so we need to get ahead early so ricky stanzi hands out a couple INTs (he already has 14 INTs in 10 games he’s played).
And as we’ve seen all year the only way tech’s defense gets a stop is help from the other team (a turnover or penalty) so getting iowa and stanzi out of their comfort zone early could be key.

On a more serious note – do the Minnesota and Iowa State fans go on your blogs and claim that you are going to fall apart because your coach is going to ND? Before they beat GT all the UGA fans had CPJ going to ND. Last week it was Urban Meyer’s turn.

I was at the game too. Both sidelines were full, lower deck, and club level. I couldn’t see the upper deck on the Tech side, but the upper deck on the Clemson side was 2/3 full. Endzones were sparse. I would have thought more than 45,000+, but the noshows were NOT either Clemson supporters nor Tech supporters. The noshows were Tampa people who apparently bought tickets but did not attend. That was their loss, because no matter who you were for, it was a GREAT game. And the game was in Tampa last year also, not Jax, as somebody said. Nevertheless, the people in NC will support it and in all liklihood fill the stadium next year in Charlotte, when Tech and Clemson will probably be playing again. Although I would personally love it if Atlanta hosted the game, I am not naive; Atlanta won’t support the ACC either, because of their blind predjudice towards the 2-team-only (as a rule) “superior” SEC.

To my UGA brethren. Why do you even log onto this blog. Ga Tech is nowhere near your capablilities. This is like Ohio State worrying about Bowling Green, right? We stand no chance to your abilities. We consistently are not able to get those five star that you guys print faster than Bernake. We also can’t compete with you 500+ majors such as dance, music, pre (v. post I suppose) forestry, women’s studies.. anyway too long to list. I remember when William Bell, coming off our national championship, stole a text book and was promptly suspended for a year- no questions asked- no coaching drama stressing. Anyway, we will see you again in football next year and in the meantime enjoy our top ten basketball program. Other than an occasional astronaut or two- I guess we got nothing else to show- check back later if you want.

Dawgfan1, in answer to your question, since 1980, Tech has won or shared THREE ACC championships and shared ONE National Championship. In last year’s Chick-Fil-A Bowl, Tech was beaten by LSU by a score of 38-3. Tech accepts its defeats as well as its successes, unlike a certain other school in this state who whines and makes excuses for EVERY loss they have. Can you name that school? That would be the University (sic) of Georgia, who is still whining and making excuses for two of their losses to Tech WAY BACK in the 1940s; they won’t even accept the CORRECT series record, nor for that matter (apparently) the actual number of times the game has been played. Tech has THREE national championships which are recognized by the NCAA, FOUR by most other sources; how many national championships does UGAG have which are recognized by the NCAA? That would be ONE. Tech has a total of 16 conference championships (SAIA, Southern, SEC, and ACC) in its history. How many conference championships (SAIA, Southern, SEC) does UGAG have? That would be 13. Is there anything else you would like to know, or which I can help you with. If not, then get back to cleaning out the grease trap; it’s stinks just like a mutt’s butt….which I am sure you are very familiar in sniffing.

Dear Nerds,
On behalf of The Fed Ex Orange Bowl, let me welcome the 20 of you to Miami. I’m not really sure what you’ll do for fun in the MIA as we don’t have Dungeon and Dragon events nor Dragon Con. We don’t dress up like characters from Star Wars or Star Trek. We don’t wear turbans. Our women are hot so they’ll want nothing to do with you. When on South Beach (aka SOBE), keep your shirts on. We don’t want the reflection off your pasty white small chests to blind the rest of the locals. Come to think of it, you might want to avoid SOBE all together. As a matter of fact, just stay at home. But be careful, word is that you can’t walk around campus without being mugged at gunpoint!

Georgia Tech should cover the 3.5.
Iowa’s NCAA SoS is Number 17 to Georgia Tech at Number 51.
Iowa’s wins are all 3 over very questionable teams. Penn State, Arizona, and Wisconsin – none of whom beat anyone else.
Iowa cannot run the football to save their soul, and that is how you beat Georgia Tech. They can light up the Tech secondary, but Tech has a month to figure out to never put 7 in the box and to drop back 5, assuming Tech can find a nickel back to drop back.
Iowa just is not a good match-up for Georgia Tech. A Conference Champion should not have to face a team who LOST 2 of their last 3 games, including hapless Ohio State whom The SEC owns and highly questionable Northwestern who played SoS Number 112 and therefore somehow is facing Auburn in the Outback Bowl.
Northwestern LOST 4 games against SoS Number 112, just wait until you see whom it is Northwestern LOST to, but Northwestern beat Iowa. Good Lord, Northwestern LOST to Syracuse 4-8, Minnesota 6-6, Penn State whose ONLY WIN is over Northwestern BCS Number 35, and 6-6 hapless too Michigan State. But, this Northwestern crap team beat Iowa.
Iowa should have no hope.
The Big Ten (11) is such a joke a conference, none of them playing any one, and worse yet, all of them losing to nobodies and beating highly questionable therefore, teams.
Now, if Georgia Tech gives up on its run, and tries to pass the football with a “qb” who in 34 games over 3 years has thrown a grand total of 12 TD passes to 11 interceptions, Tech would be playing straight into the hands of the only thing Iowa can do, and that is to defend the pass. Iowa gets lots of practice practicing against themselves, and Iowa can pass the football.
Surely, Georgia Tech is not that stupid.

Look, Tech only beat 1 team in the BCS Top 25.
Tech played 6 opponents who do not even go to a bowl game.
Your campus is in the slums where the crime is, and the guns, and the drugs.
Tech’s SoS is Number 51 by The NCAA itself.
Iowa is a horrible opponent for any conference CHUMPionship game winner to have to play.
The game is in Miami, where the crime approximates that of Tech’s own campus. It is a The BCS Game which always has the dead last worst rating, and this match-up with Iowa is a horrible match-up with Iowa, who lost to Northwestern for God’s sake with their SoS Number 112 in the nation. Iowa is a horrible football team, whose only strength is stopping the pass, which is what Georgia Tech did to lose to UGA.

After watching UGA maul GT’s defense and manhandle that Triple Option with a very bad defense I kinda like our chances. UGA held the TO to a little over 200 yds, Nesbitt to 41 yds, Dwyer to 33 yds, and if not for poor tackling on the Thomas pass reception TD it would have been an even more dominate performance by UGA. Yes I like our chances. Especially with a month to prepare.

Problem is, Iowa hasn’t faced a defense as pathetic as Yech’s. They’ll have a field day on offense while all their slow white boys run silly on that JV defense Johnson throws out there

To any trolling Hakweyes – we respect you and look forward to a tough exciting game. Keep in mind our 60 yards and a cloud of dust offense gets people jumping up a lot during the game, while our defense can sometimes cause you to slump down under the seat. But, hey that’s why they play the game. I don’t think this is gonna be a runaway for either team but should prove far more entertaining than a lot of people may expect.
Glad you’re getting your QB back – he is a talent and a lot of fun to watch. Come on down and enjoy.

If Georgia is irrelevant, then why do they always beat you? Just curious

True, they have owned us lately. Before 2008, they ran up a nice streak (7 games straight) due primarily to the most inept coach and AD to ever step foot on the Georgia Tech campus. That administration singlehandedly almost ruined GT football as we once knew it. Thankfully, both are gone forever. We now have had 2 close games and are 1-1 against Ga with the new regime in place. Looks like the rivalry is back, and the Dawgs are always relevant to us and vice-versa. They just happened to have one of their worst seasons in quite some time, I think that is where AJack’s comment came from.
Anyway, we look forward to the Bowl game and a good battle with Iowa!

If you believe the tool fans the way they tell it, Chan Gailey never got within five scores of UGA. Truth of the matter is, Gailey had several games where he lost to UGA by only 6, 7 and 3 points. It doesn’t matter who Yech’s coach is, they will always be UGA’s toilet paper and they know it

First off, much respect to GT. You guys are a good team and I’m expecting a good bowl game. Sadly I don’t know as much about your team’s strengths and weaknesses as I would like, but I know you have a running game to be feared and plenty of weapons on offense to respect.
A couple points on Iowa though.
1) A comment was made earlier in the blog as to the effect of “Don’t expect Iowa to make many solo tackles like UGA did against us, our guys can’t be stopped.” In actuality, Iowa is one of the best tackling teams in the nation. They are all about keeping the opponent in front of them, limiting mistakes, and making good tackles to limit yards after catch and yards after first contact. So yes, I fully expect Iowa to make solo tackles when necessary, that’s what exceptional defenses do, and Iowa is an exceptional defense.
2) Stanzi, heaven knows, has given us Iowa fans fits with his early mistakes in games. At one point I thought he was going to set an NCAA record with most consecutive games with an interception returned for a touchdown. But, like many of the great gunslinger QBs in CFB, for better or worse he doesn’t let it phase him and he keeps making throws. In his worst game of the year against Indiana, he threw 4 picks in the span of about 20 minutes of game play. Most QBs would give up or become hesitant at that. Instead, iowa scored 28 points in the 4th quarter to win, lead by Stanzi’s passing. He’s lead more 4th quarter comebacks than anyone in the country this year, and he hasn’t lost a game that he’s started since last year’s upset of penn state.
3) Building on that, Stanzi & Iowa were in the top 10 in the nation in long distance pass plays before he went down. They can and will open it up very quickly on defenses when they find a crease. Its something that has to be respected and planned against, which has kept their offense alive all season long.
4) Robinson, Iowa’s freshman running back, has set Iowa freshman rushing records while sitting out or missing significant playing time in 4 games this season. He’s a tough back with good vision, speed, and power, running behind an excellent offensive line. To say Iowa can’t run the ball, as someone mentioned earlier, is just silly.
5) Iowa’s special teams is amazing. Their blocked punt in the Penn State game turned it, and lest anyone forget they blocked 2 consecutive field goals to stay alive in their opening game of the season. (and in response, yes, that was against an FCS team, yes, iowa has played down to competition this year, but they’ve played up, too. )
6) Finally, Iowa adjusts amazingly well during a game, especially after halftime. Penn State scored on a quick strike on their first drive of the game vs Iowa and then didn’t sniff the end zone for the rest of the game. Wisconsin lead 10-0 at halftime and didn’t score a point the rest of the game. Indiana and Northwestern both held to only a field goal in the second half. I think a close game favors the hawkeyes because of their great ability to adjust.
I know that GT fans can give me a bunch of good reasons yall will win this game as well, which is why I expect a good, hard fought game. I’m just trying to clear up any misconceptions that this game will be a cakewalk against a “Big, dumb, slow, weak” B10 team.
Good luck to yall.

I feel our offense will do good against Iowa, but where we are going to have problems is our defense. We must stop them or we will lose. Also Paul will have to come up with a few different plays on offense to throw Iowa off. They have 1 month to prepare for the option and this could hurt us. It will be a close game but TECH will prevail.

A Rob,
Iowa runs mostly zone coverages, but thanks for playing. Do all GT fans talk out their bum without doing any research? Oh, and while your players are shredding through Iowa’s defensive backfield, did you forget that your QB (that has moderate passing skills at best) still has to throw the ball to them? That’s when the Hawks have a field day with the turnovers.

fergie, confused? Tech only claims National Titles they have won and can back up with proof. Tech has 4, Georgia has 1.
4 is more than 1.

It’s kinda funny when the players are shaking hands and the fans are beating each other up. As fans, our loyalty will get to our emotions. But give credit to both teams. They worked so hard to get to the BCS. As a Hawkeye fan, I prefer to see the Hawkeyes win, but when I think of it another way, maybe even a lost can still ease my pain. The players on both teams will go 100% for their own pride, dedication, and the determination to reach the next level(NFL). Take nothing away from them because win or lose, I am sure they will play their heart out. As a fan’s perspective, I get pissed if the Hawkeyes lose but for the Players’ point of view…I will congrat and credit the ones who prevail. Why because they’re all young athletes mostly from 18-23. They put everything on the table. They sacrafice their bodies for Scholarhips, pride, and a better future.
With this being said. Good Luck to the GT fans and players. Don’t care how we play or what we’re good at. Whether Defense of Offense, no one will know for sure how the game will be play and the outcome of the game.
It will be an interesting game to watch. And GT fans, just us…we have fans everywhere. There will be millions of fans watching this game on TV and attending he game.
