It may not have the glitz of the battle of the unbeatens in the Fiesta, but the Orange Bowl will be a great matchup of offense vs. defense: Tech’s o’s vs. Iowa’s x’s. Or is it the other way around?
Either way, it should be fun to watch.
Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said that he couldn’t remember the last time he faced a team that uses this much option, and that trying to simulate it in practice will be quite a challenge.
The Hawkeyes’ offense isn’t flashy, but with a defense as stout as Iowa’s is, they don’t have to be. A couple of scores here and there is all they need. It’s kind of like Tech’s defense. It doesn’t have to stop everyone all the time, just a couple a game seem to work fine.
Anyway, it’s beena long day so I’ll open it up to your thoughts about the matchup.

brad, whatever. Enjoy shreveport! You wouldn’t be here if you weren’t afraid of CPJ’s effect on Tech….the day Tech hired him may prove to be the downfall of CMR…. he can’t beat UF, Kiffen beat him down in his first season and BAMA is looking tougher and tougher everytime they play. Now, it appears that Tech is on the rise. It was a nice win for the dawgs against Tech…hope things shape up fast over there in athens! As a Tech fan, I respect CMR and think that it would be tough for uga to replace him.

anybody catch the score of the ga/tech game from this year? Oh, it was 30-24? Wow, wasn’t tech ranked pretty high then? Oh, they must have choked their little pencil necks off. Glad we could ruin your “magical” season geeks.
And please, don’t claim we didn’t. I was there at Historic Mark Richt Field, and I saw the majority of your ethnic fan base crying their eyes out. It was sweeter than Yoohoo.

StingDoc is probably the craziest of the crazies on here. The SAT bs cracks me up. Reggie Ball and Michael Johnson were each there 4 and 5 years, yet they can’t speak a word of English. Even ebonics professors couldn’t understand them

For ever Reggie Ball at GT, there are 3,000 at UGA.
You can compare our football programs, but as an academic institution, there’s no comparison. You are out classed in that arena.

dude, I can take ribbing about a football game. Or a bad season. Or even falling down the stairs when I’m drunk. But there are some things that bring out the true colors in people, and finding any humor whatsoever in a dogs death is one of them. Tech truly showed their ass with their behavior. And if tech lowlifes are so concerned about the health and safety of our mascots, THEY would be protesting the Seilers instead of celebrating when one of their hearts gives out.
I’m telling you, I’ve seen some heartless and cruel actions in the past – but just the pure meanness of tech’s fanbase as a whole over this was just kind of shocking.

Tech fans don’t travel??? Did anybody notice the swarm of Tech fans in Tampa Saturday night? There were probably more Clemson fans there, but that’s only because Clemson is a much larger school than Tech. And I am sure Tech will sell out its entire allotment of tickets for the Orange Bowl, and even more Tech fans will buy from other sources. Big (they don’t know who to count past) TEN schools travel big too, but mainly to get away from the cold weather. I seriously doubt there will be more Iowa fans in Miami than Tech fans, but who cares if there are? The only thing that matters is the final score, and I see the Jackets’ offense baffling Iowa’s defense all night long. Now, if we can only find a defense to stop them !!!
BTW, Tech now has 3 more total conference championships than the mutts, INCLUDING the 64 years both were in the same conference (SAIA, Southern, and SEC). That goes along with having more national championships than the mutts.

You must have been watching on your computer monitor. It was pretty clear on TV that there were more empty seats than full ones on Saturday night. Then again, I only watched for a few moments during commercials for the Big 12 championship game (which happened to be packed to capacity). Was there a Star Ttrek convention in Atlanta this past weekend or something?

Excuse me… there is only one ‘T’ in star trek. Wanted to clear that up before someone got really upset with me.
I looked it up. There were approximately 42,815 seats filled on Saturday night in Raymond James Stadium. Much better than last year’s game in Jacksonville, but still only about 65% of total capacity (65,857). I guess less than 2/3 is “plenty”…
A little deeper dig found that over 57,000 seats were sold though, meaning that almost 14,000 fans decided they didn’t want to miss SNL.

C from Marietta – It’s great to have at least a few class act UGA fans in the state like you. Thanks for the congrats!
Now can we make some defensive changes!!!??? Yes we have some good individuals – but – our overall defense is DISTURBINGLY bad. It appears like we’ve gotten worse in the last two games. We need serious change! -Not just a few tweaks in the off season.
As for the offense – I’m simply amazed. It does seem unstoppable at points.

To Hawkeye in St. Louis, thanks for being a classy fan. We don’t get much of that around here with the UGA idiots. Should be a great game in Miami. Interesting matchup. I would say more, but I want to give the UGA losers room to say ((((((((30-24)))))))) on their way to wherever they are playing. I think it is somewhere in Louisiana, anyway, that should be a good redneck matchup.

Iowa has substantial NFL talent on both lines. The key to the game will be the ability of the Iowa defense to keep tech off the board or held to FG’s on at least 2 of their first 3 drives. Iowa is not a high scoring big play offense, but if they can keep tech off the board and can manage to not go 3 and out in their first few drives the Iowa O-line should keep the hawks on the field virtually all day.
Iowa likes to beat people up with their big boys, and they have NFL talent on both their offensive and defensive lines (and in the case of Bryan Bulaga and Adrian Clayborn, first day, if not first round talent).
This game seems like a fairly simple pick to me, if it stays close the hawks win. If its a blow out, its because Tech couldn’t be stopped.

Iowa is a very conservative team, so we need to get ahead early so ricky stanzi hands out a couple INTs (he already has 14 INTs in 10 games he’s played).
And as we’ve seen all year the only way tech’s defense gets a stop is help from the other team (a turnover or penalty) so getting iowa and stanzi out of their comfort zone early could be key.

You have a good team and Ferentz is an excellent coach but it’s not like you dominated the Conference that Can’t Count this year.
You barely squeeked by N. Iowa and Arkansas State and you lost to Northwestern. I mean – isn’t NU like the Duke or Vandy of the Big 10?
On a more serious note – do the Minnesota and Iowa State fans go on your blogs and claim that you are going to fall apart because your coach is going to ND? Before they beat GT all the UGA fans had CPJ going to ND. Last week it was Urban Meyer’s turn.

Let’s talk about the present…..uga is looking for a new DC and Tech is looking forward to playing in the Orange Bowl and uga is considering charging for tailgating because the pups are so messy. I was at the game too. Both sidelines were full, lower deck, and club level. I couldn’t see the upper deck on the Tech side, but the upper deck on the Clemson side was 2/3 full. Endzones were sparse. I would have thought more than 45,000+, but the noshows were NOT either Clemson supporters nor Tech supporters. The noshows were Tampa people who apparently bought tickets but did not attend. That was their loss, because no matter who you were for, it was a GREAT game. And the game was in Tampa last year also, not Jax, as somebody said. Nevertheless, the people in NC will support it and in all liklihood fill the stadium next year in Charlotte, when Tech and Clemson will probably be playing again. Although I would personally love it if Atlanta hosted the game, I am not naive; Atlanta won’t support the ACC either, because of their blind predjudice towards the 2-team-only (as a rule) “superior” SEC.

As bitter a pill as it was (at the time) to lose to the lowly mutts, I am way over it now. That game, and that team, are totally irrelevant. Nobody outside the state of GA gives a rip about that game, and I’m sure that includes the good people in Iowa. They know they are going to be up against a good team with an awesome, totally unpredictable, offense coached by a man with nerves of steel—one who is NEVER afraid to lay it on the line and NEVER willing to give up.
